I suppose I would fit into the ignorant category, but it's only because I don't like soft boiled eggs. I certainly know how to hard boil one!

I like soft boiled eggs, but I put them in a pan of cold water, then bring to the boil on a low heat and then simmer for about a minute.

It usually takes around 9 minutes, but it works for me.

I usually go for 3:30 but i have a fantastic egg timer on my phone which sorts it out - if you go to www.getjar.com, look for egg timers - it asks you if you want it soft, medium or hard & also if you've added in the egg right at the beginning or after you've boiled the water.
