Not only that, it also enables you to drive away faster, which is of fastidious consequence in places like Toronto, where you can't park anywhere for more than three hours without a permit - and boy, are Toronto parking permits getting more difficult to obtain...
Frankly, what I'd like to see is the rise of multi-directional cars: you park in whatever direction you fancy, and then turn your seat :D
