Why do the "forces capable of creating a large amount of electromagnetic energy" have to be "unnatural"? Maybe everybody in a three-mile radius happened to use their cellphones at the same time and the geographical landscape funnelled the waves into a sort of vortex. (I'm just saying, there are lots of wacky ways to explain it... without having to go down the alien or demon route!)
