Interesting. I would definitely agree with the Bonds/Cobb comparison. I really hope Bonds doesn't make it, based on the enormous ego alone.

In a world where Bonds was less hated, he would announce his retirement at this year's All Star Game in Pittsburgh, effective at the end of the season, rendering the rest of the season a farewell tour. Then, next year, at the All Star Game in SF, they'd unveil his statue outside the left field gate. Some say that he'd probably rather still be playing when the statue is presented. Regardless, I think you nailed it when you wrote he'll play the victim to the end. As a Giants fan, it's surprisingly easy to be simultaneously disgusted with the whole situation, repulsed by Bonds, and also feel the rush from watching him hit, knowing that even while hobbled he's arguably the best hitter in baseball.

Good point David. As much as I've become anti-Bonds in the last couple of years, I can't help myself either when watching him at bat. Every time I watch him swing I'm thinking, "I hope he strikes out" and yet another part of me wants to see him park another one in the Bay. I think it's in our nature to enjoy watching the spectacular. Regardless of how big of jerk Bonds is or how much he may have juiced the last few years, what he has done in his career has been spectacular.
