VERY interesting post Aspazia..... the thing that I found myself thinking about was the role that sororities play in all of this. From my brief (and utterly retarded!) experience being in a sorority, I feel that they serve to support the "degrading messages" about women's sexuality that you speak of in this post. However, women in the sorority I was in didn't engage in "loose" sexual behavior to be loved or admired by men, rather, they wanted to be loved and admired by the women in the sorority. It's intersting to think about how women in these "elite circles" are encouraged to have sex, to give blow jobs, so that they can come and report to their "sisters" about it at the weekly meeting. And then at the end of the year all of the sisters share their "laundry list" of men who they've slept with, the longer the list the better. What a severe lapse in judgement I had when I thought sororities would be about sisterhood.... oy. |
