I've had chickens at my semi-rural home for the past eight years. I love it. We currently have 7 hens and 1 rooster and gather, on average, 4-6 eggs a day. Since we don't eat that many, we wind up giving away dozens every month.
Of course, you don't need a rooster to have eggs. In fact, I recommend NOT having a rooster, since they can be pretty noisy. The one we have now rarely crows and that's fine with me.
My neighbor's kids collect the eggs while we're on vacation. The chickens have a yard that doesn't need mucking. Water is automatic (look for Little Giant brand) and hanging feeder holds about a week's worth of food. So they're very easy to maintain, even if you do a bit of traveling.
And I can't tell you how fun they are to watch!
Highly recommended -- good luck!

I like to buy eggs from Grandma's Kitchen, to justify buying cookies as well. Plus, I just like her. But lately I've just been using her eggs to make our own cookies (yay us :^). And whenever she is out, she points me down to Farmer John at Our Family Farm.

Grandma from Grandma's Kitchen was running low on eggs for a while, but I think she's back to full production.

Manchester is a fine town, but that's not where Back Forty Acres is! We say Chelsea (though technically in Sylvan Twp.)
Fresh eggs are the best. Kudos to the Ann Arborites that decided to take on hen raising. It's rewarding on many levels.

Hi Maria - I know having chickens would be so fun. I think I mostly have to convince the DH. Thanks for the encouragement.
Tricia, Ed, Patti, and Jen - all the hardcore farmers marketers who will be showing up in the winter appreciate Our Family Farm's eggs!
Hi Stephanie - I don't know how I made that mistake about where Back Forty Acres is! Thanks for the correction.
