Aside from being the most hilarious declaration of candidacy ever done on television, I have to wonder if Colbert's pseudo-candidacy may have unleashed a monster that he can't control.
It's been interesting to watch the show as Colbert slips character more and more often. I've read that he drives himself to and from work because it takes him that long at the end of the day to lose "Stephen Colbert" and become the good, Catholic husband and father who teaches Sunday School and lives in Montclair, NJ that he is.
I have no doubt that "Stephen Colbert" is a part of himself, and he's clearly more comfortable using that as a mask. If you look at photos of him when he is not in character, there's a very haunted person living behind those eyes.
The weird thing about the "Colbert" persona is that in its own weird way, it's very authentic in its inauthenticity. There's something so refreshing about someone who plays to the absurdity of the political scene actually being a candidate, that I wonder if he just might have unleashed a monster here that he's unable to control.
Hell, if Edwards drops out before the NJ primary, I'll probably write in Colbert. After all, he lives in NJ so he could be a "favorite son" here too.

These comments are very interesting Jill because it reflects my hypothesis about the Colbert persona being his own shadow side.
It's odd to me that interviews about him I read up until this year didn't mention the plane crash which took half his family.
I'd vote for him purely based on his performance at the press club last year!!

I actually think he the Most Qualified.
He sees right through the absurdity of it all and gives "truthy" answers.
These seemingly absurd answers are OBVIOUSLY WRONG but it instanty makes you think of the RIGHT ANSWER in your own head and that's the magic of it.
You get the right answer from this crazy play on being Political.Pure genious.
He probably could run the country better then some people we know, and those pople obviously can't run a country.Peace.

Thanks so much for writing this wonderful report - and also Steven's chart which I have been wondering about for a long time. I am madly in love with Seven Colbert and have actually said out loud, "I wish Seven Colbert would run for president." I laugh out loud at him enough to make my cats wonder. He's brilliant, funny, attractive, and can even sing and dance. WOW! Lest he get nervous about my declarations, I am old enough to be his mother. But so what! Love is love.

Stephen Colbert was born in D.C? Is that true? I wonder why no mention is made of his education. Some reports state he attended Dartmouth College-- (dropped out/or otherwise left; later attended Northwestern University.
I think the individual who commented on the "haunting" expression in his out-of-character eyes was insightful and accurate. I am no expert on such things, but I recall discussing this same observation with husband--his look was remarkable.
Cheers,
