I remember when the States did enforce immigration and emmigration. When I was a kid back in the 1960s, my family drove from California into Nevada and back. Each time we got to the stateline, my Dad was asked by border guards if he had anything to declare, any fruits, vegetables, or other possible contraband. He also had to show a valid California drivers license.
Our international borders were handled the same way because only State borders abutt Canada and Mexico. Border enforcement by the Feds is a more recent developement through the Commerce Dept's function of regulating inter-state commerce. Enforcing the international border trade seemed a logical spinoff.
And that lead to the need to enforce border crossing of people, too, when the original Brassaro programs were discontinued. The farmworkers continued to come no matter what barriers were put up, thus requiring more Federal involvement to coordinate operations along very long borders.
An extremely slippery slope the States and the Feds were sucked down.

I remember being asked about having any fresh fruit or vegetables when I crossed the stateline into California too...
What really irks me are these dumb sanctuary cities. It's an example of our country balkanizing. People no longer feel that they are part of America, they fell only a part of their town or community. It's tribalism.
The Greek word for "idiocy" means to be only conscious of one's immediate circle. I say that people who are unable to be a part of the nation are, in essence, idiots.

There are also other incentives to gaining state and city cooperation, such as denying them any federal largesse if they do not get with the program, including withholding highway maintenance and other regular infrastructure earmarks.
The purported reason California does the thing with fruits and veggies is that they are keeping Mediterranean fruit flies out of their state. I have a sneaking suspicion, however, that while that may have been the reason back at the start when there was some major ongoing threat posed by the pests, it's now simply a way of making one purchase ones' produce in the state, where it comes from California farmers -- sort of like movie theatres prohibiting outside food because they want to sell you their food.
Back in the Greyhound riding days of my younger years, it seemed that the person who boarded the bus to confiscate fruits was always a really small woman working by herself. I often thought about how fun it would be if a full busload of passengers each brought along two or three watermelons.

I agree. The Feds and State should withold largesse from these rogue cities. After a while people will get fed up with privation (if they haven't had a bellyfull of illegal criminals who will flock to sanctuary cities for refuge).
Hey, watch those comments about small women!
Sheesh, doesn't anyone like my picture of Rosie???

Even the extra hair can't make Rosie any more unpleasant looking than she already is. I wouldn't be surprised if babies begin crying (whaaaa!) when she walks into a room, and adults break into a run when they see her walking behind them on a sidewalk at night.
Personally, I think she does add to modern political dialogue -- there always has to be a voice of treason, right? Oh, wait! Voice of...

A lot of people are going to be pushing this bill in the wake of that gang murder in the school yard in Newark New Jersey.
Bill O'Reilly has taken up the cause too.
Also, wasn't there a news story last week about a police officer being killed by an illegal with a record?
Time to put a stop to this madness.

I really think Rosie O'Donnell is demented. God help that poor child she adopted.

I am fed up with our porous borders. Every day we hear of illegals committing horrible crimes in this country. Enough is enough!
