I saw the official Camp Century documentary on A&E classroom, broadcast 4/26/08. I was amazed to see workers physically handling reactor cores and hand loading the reactor with no shielding. The documentary actually said that they were only protected by eight feet of water!

Robert:
8 feet of water is a lot of shielding. For gamma radiation, 2 feet is a tenth thickness - it reduces radiation dose rate by a factor of 10.
That means that 8 feet reduces it by a factor of 10x10x10x10 or 10,000.
