Since you Democrats are electing Obama because of his race, perhaps you can explain the mechanics of how that will help us to transcend the racial divides in America. His elevation is the end of affirmative action. And when that is realized, then our society will be free to return to a more meritocratic way of doing business.

Racists for Obama?
New polling and a trickle of stories from the battleground states suggest that Sen. Barack Obama's coalition includes one unlikely group: white voters with negative views of African-Americans.
Race has become the elephant in the room of the 2008 presidential campaign, with Obama’s prospect of becoming the first black president drawing some Americans closer to him while pushing others away. At times, the contest has slipped into a familiar dynamic of allegations of racism and outraged denial — but it's also challenged some easy assumptions about race, racism and prejudice.
“What you see is it’s perfectly possible to hold a negative view of at least one aspect of African-Americans and yet simultaneously prefer Obama,” said Charles Franklin, a political scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “Racial feelings are not as cut and dried — not as black and white — as people often say.” .
Now putzoid and the other trolls can vote for Obama.

From what I gather, it will be mainly the European's show. They've been the one's who've been talking about reforms over the last few days. From the Times article...
Sarkozy has called for an overhaul of the current international financial architecture established just after World War II at the 1944 Bretton Woods conference, and said on Saturday the summit could possibly be held before the end of November in New York.
The French leader, whose country now holds of the rotating presidency of the European Union, said the meeting would be a "great opportunity" to reassess how the world runs its financial affairs.
One way or another, I think there are going to be moves to "deglobalize" the financial system. The rest of the world no doubt wants to decouple themselves from vunerability to American stupidity. On the other hand, the European financial system is as much an overleveraged house of cards as ours, perhaps more so.

Important book for homeschooled children.
Creation Astronomy: A Study Guide to the Constellation!
Media Angels Science / Paperback
What would living on Venus be like? Are there really black holes? How did God create the cosmos? Curious kids want to know, and this 28-week curriculum gives them biblically based, scientifically sound answers.
This study guide, written in the same format as the others, presents astronomy from a Creation perspective, and will show you how "the heavens declare the glory of God." This book refutes the Big Bang Theory and gives some of its history.

I would love to know what this is costing us compared to, say, health benefits for the elderly. The president is not the queen of England, and he's probably burned up enough fuel in his romping around the white houses that would make a carbiou stroke out. Random Saturday poetry comment:
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

Yeah, but the actual time the man has been on the earth, doing shit, like hunting a gathering, and just being dudes is well over 20,000 years.
They have all kinds of rationalizations for why things like radio carbon dating are "wrong" and ludicrous explanations for why "geology" supports a young Earth.
For the most part, creationists just fling mud at science and hope that they can convince enough dumbasses to have their crap taught in schools. I doubt they even believe in their own psuedoscientific shit (With a god that has all powerful magical powers, who needs rational explanations anyway?).
They're very GOPer in their methods.

ANCHORAGE (AP) — Alaska's black leaders say they're not surprised to see Gov. Sarah Palin at the center of the controversy over injecting the race issue into the presidential campaign.
Palin, Republican John McCain's running mate, has repeatedly insisted that Barack Obama's former preacher, the inflammatory Rev. Jeremiah Wright, is a legitimate issue even though McCain himself has said it's out of bounds.
"She has no sensitivity to minorities," said the Rev. Alonzo Patterson, a Baptist minister and president of the Alaska Black Leadership Conference. "She's really inciting a lot of African-Americans to get out and vote."
Since taking office in December 2006, Palin has had a sometimes tense relationship with black leaders, who say they've been ignored in their efforts to get more minorities hired in her administration.
In Alaska, blacks chafed when Palin opposed a proclamation endorsing a festival that marks the freeing of slaves. On the campaign trail, her events sometimes have attracted fringe groups hostile to minorities. At one rally attended by Palin, a supporter told a black cameraman to "sit down, boy."

Atrios should blog about this.
Keynes, whose life’s mission was to save capitalism from itself, is more relevant than at any time since his death in 1946.
His renewed influence can be seen everywhere: in Barack Obama’s planned stimulus package, for example. When George W. Bush said his administration’s plan to take equity in banks was “not intended to take over the free market, but to preserve it”, he could have been quoting Keynes directly.
The key to Keynes was his commitment to preserving the market economy by making it work. He was dismissive of Marxism but believed the market economy could survive only if it earned the support of the public by raising living standards.
When bad policies were making economic problems worse, he felt a moral obligation to change them.

A former head of MI5 today describes the response to the September 11 2001 attacks on the US as a "huge overreaction" and says the invasion of Iraq influenced young men in Britain who turned to terrorism.
In an interview with the Guardian, Stella Rimington calls al-Qaida's attack on the US "another terrorist incident" but not qualitatively different from any others.
"That's not how it struck me. I suppose I'd lived with terrorist events for a good part of my working life and this was as far as I was concerned another one," she says.
In common with Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, who retired as MI5's director general last year, Rimington, who left 12 years ago, has already made it clear she abhorred "war on terror" rhetoric and the government's abandoned plans to hold terrorism suspects for 42 days without charge.
Today, she goes further by criticising politicians including Jacqui Smith, the home secretary, for trying to outbid each other in their opposition to terrorism and making national security a partisan issue.

Controversy over Britain's abortion laws will be reignited next week when MPs are allowed a free vote on a range of proposals to update the 40-year-old legislation.
Pro-choice MPs have put forward amendments for more liberal rules that would allow nurses to perform abortions and end the "two doctor rule", allowing terminations to be approved by just one doctor. A third proposal seeks to legalise abortions in Northern Ireland. All are supported by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecology.
The debate will reopen a row that was put on hold over summer, when the government unexpectedly withdrew its flagship fertility and embryology bill, which has been used as an opportunity to update the 1967 Abortion Act. The government was accused of delaying the debate until after the byelection in Glasgow East, which has a strong Catholic community.
Wednesday's vote will include amendments backed by MPs on the religious right that seek to restrict women's access to abortion by demanding up to three doctors' signatures, and fresh restrictions on late abortions when a baby is found to be carrying a severe medical defect. They are also seeking to block moves to legalise abortion in Northern Ireland.

The ONLY thing wrong with Lynda Carter's "Wonder Woman" is that she lacked the muscular development in her upper body.
Think Linda Hamilton in Terminator II, for example. Well muscled, nicely defined, but not over developed.
Also, Lucy Lawless in "Xena".
Aside from that minor quibble, Lynda WAS pretty damn good in the role!

Friends and foes have called Cuba many things - a progressive beacon, a quixotic underdog, an oppressive tyranny - but no one has called it lucky, until now .
Mother nature, it emerged this week, appears to have blessed the island with enough oil reserves to vault it into the ranks of energy powers. The government announced there may be more than 20bn barrels of recoverable oil in offshore fields in Cuba's share of the Gulf of Mexico, more than twice the previous estimate.
If confirmed, it puts Cuba's reserves on par with those of the US and into the world's top 20. Drilling is expected to start next year by Cuba's state oil company Cubapetroleo, or Cupet.
"It would change their whole equation. The government would have more money and no longer be dependent on foreign oil," said Kirby Jones, founder of the Washington-based US-Cuba Trade Association. "It could join the club of oil exporting nations."
"We have more data. I'm almost certain that if they ask for all the data we have, (their estimate) is going to grow considerably," said Cupet's exploration manager, Rafael Tenreyro Perez.

Red State, Blue State, Rich State, Poor State: Why Americans Vote the Way They Do
Author: Andrew Gelman
Upcoming Schedule
Monday, October 20, at 6:00 AM
Andrew Gelman, statistics and political science professor at Columbia University, examines the common thinking about the American electorate and contends that several long held beliefs are incorrect. Mr. Gelman argues that the political fissure in the United States does not lie between Blue America and Red America but rather between affluent Republicans and Democrats. He also contends that religion is no more divisive in the United States than amongst European voters and that church attendance is a greater predictor of voting among the rich than the poor. This event was hosted by the Cato Institute in Washington, DC.

Anti-abortion MPs last night abandoned their parliamentary fight for new restrictions, calling for the bitterly contested issue to be resolved by a high powered inquiry instead.
Nadine Dorries, the Tory MP and former nurse who has led attempts to cut the time limit for abortions, said the issue was too important to become a 'political football' and deserved more lengthy reflection.
The retreat came as Wednesday's vote on the government's embryology bill, seen by anti-abortionists at first as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change the law on a woman's right to choose, risked descending into farce.
Downing Street had still not resolved a cabinet row over how to handle the bill yesterday. But it is expected that the time allotted for debate will be so sharply curtailed that dozens of rival abortion amendments tabled by both sides in the argument will not be put to a vote, meaning that the law is likely to stay unchanged.
Pro-choice MPs had been increasingly confident they could win a vote on scrapping the rule that two doctors must consent to a termination, making it easier for women to get the procedure. However, both sides now appear fearful of tampering with the law, with pro-choice MPs worried that even if they won they would give the Lords a chance to reopen the debate and introduce more restrictions.

NOW; transcript from 2003
MOYERS: When future historians come to write the political story of our times, they will first have to review hundreds of hours of a cable television program called THE DAILY SHOW. You simply can't understand American politics in the new millennium without THE DAILY SHOW.
For example, if you're my age, you no doubt remember the Lincoln-Douglas Debates as the epiphany of political discourse. If you're a little younger, you were taught to study the Kennedy-Nixon debates for their revelation of strong opinions, strongly expressed.
But, Lincoln-Douglas, Kennedy-Nixon are nothing compared to a debate conducted recently on THE DAILY SHOW. Moderated not by Public Television's Jim Lehrer, but by a man many consider to be the preeminent political analyst of our time, the distinguished commentator and anchorman, Jon Stewart. Take a look.

video clip: Stewart: We're gonna have an honest, open debate between the President of the United States and the one man we believe has the insight and the cahones to stand up to him.
Thank you, Governor. Mr. President, you won the coin toss. The first question will go to you.
Why is the United States of America using its power to change governments in foreign countries?
First Bush: We must stand up for our security and for the permanent rights and the hopes of mankind.
Stewart: Well, certainly that represents a bold new doctrine in foreign policy, Mr. President. Governor Bush, do you agree with that?
Second Bush: Yeah, I'm not so sure that the role of the United States is to go around the world and say, "This is the way it's gotta be."
Stewart: Well, that's interesting. Well, that's a difference of opinion, and certainly that's what this country is about. Differences of opinion. Mr. President, let me just get specific. Why are in Iraq?
First Bush: We will be umm, changing the regime of Iraq for the good of the Iraqi people.
Stewart: Governor, then I'd like to hear your response on that.
Second Bush: If we're an arrogant nation, they'll resent us. I think one way for us to end up being viewed as the ugly American is to go around the world saying we do it this way, so should you. [END VIDEO CLIP]

Pro-choice campaigners warned last night that a parliamentary bill aimed at extending the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland offers the last chance of giving women the right to terminate pregnancies in the province.
They say there will be little chance of the law being extended once policing and justice powers are devolved to the Northern Ireland Assembly. The new ministry will be dominated by the Democratic Unionists and Sinn Fein, both of which firmly oppose such a move. The abortion amendment is due to be introduced into the House of Commons on Wednesday, but there are fears it will fall off the parliamentary timetable because the time allotted for the debate has been so curtailed. Pro-choice MPs and groups allege this is due to a private deal between Downing Street and the Democratic Unionist party - a claim both dispute.
Anna Lo, the Alliance party assembly member who is one of only two pro-choice politicians at Stormont, said the bill was the 'last ever chance' to introduce the 1967 act into Northern Ireland. 'If and when policing and justice are devolved, I fear the DUP and Sinn Fein will ensure no law is introduced to bring us in line with the UK. So this is the very last chance for the foreseeable future to extend the 1967 act. The status quo means that a woman in Bangor, Wales, has the right to free access to abortion on the NHS while a woman from Bangor, Co Down, has no access and instead has to travel to Britain and pay privately for a termination. Yet both women pay the same taxes.

Colin Powell's great selling point if we recall correctly was ... oh yes, his skin. Here was one Negro who would do anything you asked, use the same war hero stuff as McCain without the tantrums, nobody allowed to talk about what kind of a person he was because he's Black, and having him around proved you're not racist. Plus he had an advantage over other Negroid Furniture like Thomas and Condi in that he really was pretty bright, and both of them are remarkably not.

"The Salt Lake City Tribune..."A Simple Choice":
Then, out of nowhere, and without proper vetting, the impetuous McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. She quickly proved grievously underequipped to step into the presidency should McCain, at 72 and with a history of health problems, die in office. More than any single factor, McCain's bad judgment in choosing the inarticulate, insular and ethically challenged Palin disqualifies him for the presidency.
Still, we have compelling reasons for endorsing Obama on his merits alone. Under the most intense scrutiny and attacks from both parties, Obama has shown the temperament, judgment, intellect and political acumen that are essential in a president that would lead the United States out of the crises created by President Bush, a complicit Congress and our own apathy. "VIDEO: Grandmother sues Gramm-pa McCain for hate speech
By GottaLaff
I love this woman. She truly gets it:
This video is from MSNBC.com, broadcast October 17, 2008.
A Kansas City grandmother is suing John McCain and Sarah Palin for promoting hate speech. Mary Kay Green told KSHB that some statements at McCain campaign rallies terrify her as much as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
"I know the secret service is on this case, but John McCain and Sarah Palin can stop some of this by a statement that they abhor these death threats and will not tolerate them," said Green.
The 66-year-old civil attorney, a lifelong Democrat, claims in the suit that the McCain campaign has intentionally and recklessly portrayed Barack Obama as a terrorist.
Green said, "You have to take these things seriously."
She'd fit right in at TPC, wouldn't she? I wish there was a way to thank her right up close and personal."

This is so unfair. I understand marriage to Madge must have sucked ass, but I want 60 million dollars and a 1,200 acre estate in the English countryside. And a pub.
LONDON, U.K. -- Guy Ritchie and Madonna have settled their divorce, according to the U.K. publication, The Sun.
The "RocknRolla" director will reportedly walk away with assets totaling around $60 million, including a 1,200-acre country estate, a London pub, and a cash settlement.

From the "nobody could have anticipated..." files:
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is struggling to find enough agents and resources to investigate criminal wrongdoing tied to the country’s economic crisis, according to current and former bureau officials.
The bureau slashed its criminal investigative work force to expand its national security role after the Sept. 11 attacks, shifting more than 1,800 agents, or nearly one-third of all agents in criminal programs, to terrorism and intelligence duties. Current and former officials say the cutbacks have left the bureau seriously exposed in investigating areas like white-collar crime, which has taken on urgent importance in recent weeks because of the nation’s economic woes.
The pressure on the F.B.I. has recently increased with the disclosure of criminal investigations into some of the largest players in the financial collapse, including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The F.B.I. is planning to double the number of agents working financial crimes by reassigning several hundred agents amid a mood of national alarm. But some people inside and out of the Justice Department wonder where the agents will come from and whether they will be enough.
So depleted are the ranks of the F.B.I.’s white-collar investigators that executives in the private sector say they have had difficulty attracting the bureau’s attention in cases involving possible frauds of millions of dollars.

Hey Deacon! Just had a very long and enjoyable conversation with my best meatspace friend. We filled each other in on all the gory details of what's going on in our lives. Her mother is 84 and declining. Her only sister lives over 100 miles away, and her father is deceased. Hence, she has sole responsibility. I got to give her the dirt on Mlle.
Mlle's doing all right. She had lunch with her best friend today. It's kind of sad; she asked her bf if it was all right if she went for lunch with Sari. The bf looked at her and blinked at her, saying, why do you think you need my permission? Go and enjoy.
To me, that indicates just how beaten downn by her ex she's been.

I'm sure Charlie Brown could use a $400k+ 24- hour blitz for his effort to take Doolittle's old district away from the 'Thuglicans.
-----
80 District 4 Leaders Endorse Brown for Congress
... In announcing his support for Brown, Steve Jernigan, the Republican Mayor of Oroville, issued the following statement:
"...I'm proud to support Charlie because he has devoted his life to the betterment of our community and our country, and has made his campaign about taking action and offering solutions to the very real challenges we're facing right now. Charlie's story is that of every middle class American who has worked hard, played by the rules and sacrificed to give their children a better future. Charlie is one of us, he listens to us, and I'm confident he will do an outstanding job championing our interests in Congress."
In addition to strong, bi-partisan support among local leaders, Brown for Congress has also released a partial list of local and national groups endorsing the campaign, including the nation's largest organization representing Independent voters, as well as educators, family farmers, nurses, firefighters and first responders, more than a half dozen veterans organizations, and the national non-partisan veterans publication Veterans Vision.

This is just too good to not pass on. Critical context: Lahde had an 866% return betting on the sub-prime collapse, doing that which a true hedge fund should do. Two other things to add: this is a guy who knows how to step away and say, "this is enough." Second, the comments on some of the site that have posted this letter are absolutely nasty. Clearly there is some real envy concerning this guy, who, while he didn't go to the right schools, etc. . . got it ALL right. Just read the letter.
Lastly, while I still have an audience, I would like to bring attention to an alternative food and energy source. You won’t see it included in BP’s, “Feel good. We are working on sustainable solutions,” television commercials, nor is it mentioned in ADM’s similar commercials. But hemp has been used for at least 5,000 years for cloth and food, as well as just about everything that is produced from petroleum products. Hemp is not marijuana and vice versa. Hemp is the male plant and it grows like a weed, hence the slang term. The original American flag was made of hemp fiber and our Constitution was printed on paper made of hemp. It was used as recently as World War II by the U.S. Government, and then promptly made illegal after the war was won. At a time when rhetoric is flying about becoming more self-sufficient in terms of energy, why is it illegal to grow this plant in this country? Ah, the female. The evil female plant — marijuana. It gets you high, it makes you laugh, it does not produce a hangover. Unlike alcohol, it does not result in bar fights or wife beating. So, why is this innocuous plant illegal? Is it a gateway drug? No, that would be alcohol, which is so heavily advertised in this country. My only conclusion as to why it is illegal, is that Corporate America, which owns Congress, would rather sell you Paxil, Zoloft, Xanax and other additive drugs, than allow you to grow a plant in your home without some of the profits going into their coffers. This policy is ludicrous. It has surely contributed to our dependency on foreign energy sources. Our policies have other countries literally laughing at our stupidity, most notably Canada, as well as several European nations (both Eastern and Western). You would not know this by paying attention to U.S. media sources though, as they tend not to elaborate on who is laughing at the United States this week. Please people, let’s stop the rhetoric and start thinking about how we can truly become self-sufficient.
With that I say good-bye and good luck.
All the best,
Andrew Lahde”

Hey kids - if you're in the Bay Area and looking for something to do tonight, Carol Leifer, "Seinfeld" writer (and Jerry's former girlfriend) is doing a benefit for our local Humane Society at 8 tonight.
Tickets are just $20 - and the Humane Society could use the money!
