I used to know a woman, not a middle-eastern woman, who was married to an Irani. This has been a couple of years, but she told me that there was a definite movement among the young in Iran to get away from clerical rule. I really think that Iran could, over time, change on its own into a less repressive place. God I hope that they are left alone. Bushco could really screw things up.

I wouldn't be surprised if their wasn't some CIA funding going to the anti-theocratic crowd. Won't they be surprised when the missionaries start flooding in?

Nice try Lambert. We all know liberals support tyranny and repression.

Exactly which theocrats ought we arrest?
And if you are up for the usual Iranian police performance, which theocratic thugs ought we torture, briefly try then execute? Got anybody in mind?
By the way, where in the U.S. was it exactly that crowds of theocratic thugs broke in on sleeping pro-democracy demonstrators / college students and savagely beat them? I mean, if we could use some Iranian police here, I'm sure you must have some specific incident in mind.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ, I surf over to Eschaton for some warm lefty fuzzies and I find myself on the same minority side of a comments thread as Ombibus Bill, who spars well for the right at Cold Fury, though the operator thereof has lately gotten a bit to hateful for my tastes.
Honestly, Lambert, what do you mean by this? Exactly what kind of good news is it that we need here? The government finally cracking down on pro-clergy militants?

hmm ... ok so my post above is a bit harsh - I'm sorry clue. It's 4 am EST and I am quite tired so I'll sign off for now and join the convo later today.
Poor lambert - can't even let a little hyperbole fly without getting ransacked by your own troops.
Not that there is ANY legal justification, but I would like to see Falwell get his ass kicked by some Marine MP's just for looking like a character on Green Acres. Then there's Pat Robertson, he needs a good ear relocation on General Principal alone.
I'm also a little angry about the moths that are gathering by the porch light now that Spring is in full swing here in New England. Alas.

Oh dear.
Am I getting a little shrill?
It just makes me crazy that theocracy is seen as a problem "over there" and not here.

Tena:
This is where the deft touch and--dare I say it?--the character of a Bill Clinton is so needed. The right kind of diplomacy and the right kind of support might make a world of difference as Iran makes the transition to a modern, partly-secular democracy. I can't think of a single person in President Fumbles's administration who would have the touch and--dare I say it?--the character to be of the slightest benefit in this delicate and dangerous situation.

The kicking of theocrat ass is always a good thing.
There is no such thing as a good theocrat. Every.
As for Falwell and Robertson (who, in addition to being a theocrat wannabe was a craven disgrace to the Marine Corps during the Korean War), they are slated for a visit to the Duck Pit, if the ducks can stomach such fare.

now if only our cops would arrest our theocratic thugs ...
... let the nomination of Pryor and such as him through, and watch our courts end up like the Iranian courts.

Whoever has a point.
The anti-government demonstrations in Iran "spontaneously" erupted about a week after the Pentagon announced it was seeking ways to "destabilize" the Iranian regime. Hope the CIA is careful -- these people never even said "Thank you" when we did this 50 years ago and gave them the autocratic Shah we thought they needed.
RE: "theocrats." It is interesting that hundreds of demonstrators were chanting "death to Khamenei" and calling for him to be hanged without drastic repercussions. Yes, yes, we're a freer country and all that -- but can anyone seriously imagine 300 Muslim men chanting "death to Bush" in the streets of Washington without all of them being rounded up and never seen again?

Surprising to find aWol praising demonstrators, since he seems to despise or at least ignore those who demonstrate for democracy in this country. Anyone remember a dude getting arrested for not recognizing the "No Spin ZOne?" Sorry, it was the "Free Speech Zone, right?"

Lambert, et al, I would simply encourage those of us who have deep misgivings about the future of our civil liberties--and count me in, clueless though I may sometimes be--not to use the kind of over-the-top hyperbolie that gives our critics (like Omnibus Bill) plenty of reason to call "Bullshit!"
There's plenty to be worried about without descending into Hesiodic panic attacks.
There, I said it. Wouldn't be a night without pissing off someone.
