I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarWell, there is always a job at Wal-Mart.

Gravatarhow many straight weeks has it been above 400,000? 16-18 weeks?

only postive news that I've seen is that tenp employment has increased. Usually a sign of postive things to come.

But with the possibility of a lot employees losing their overtime rights... the American worker is getting a beating by this economy flamed on by the idiotic policy maker that left my state a short 2 1/2 years ago

GravatarSadly for Ted, he may have an even more difficult day ahead if the stories are correct about Michael Savage Weiner and MSNBC taking some kind of legal action against various bloggers for recent comments they have put on their websites.

GravatarI wish one of the Dem presidential campaigns would pick Ted up as a full time blogger for their side.
What a genius move that would be, eh?

GravatarI joined Ted on Thursday. Where's my virtual drink?

GravatarMelanie - Right here - anything you want. I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope it doesn't last long.

Gravatarbut but but the tax cuts for the rich was supposed to help?!?

GravatarI just finished my first week of being employed for the first time since 8/25/01. Most of that time since then has been at school as full and part time student. Thanks to very generous parental help I made it through relatively unscathed; at least financial. Being unemployed sucks; there are only degrees of how bad it sucks. I wish Ted the best of luck. and the rest of you who are in the unfortunate position.

Melanie, good luck, and I'll raise pint for you this evening...and the rest of you.

Gravatarhow many straight weeks has it been above 400,000? 16-18 weeks?

We've been at 400k+ since Feb 15, so that's 18 weeks (if I counted on my fingers right):

GravatarSorry about the formatting on my last post--forgot the extra spaces would be dropped...

GravatarNTodd thanks for the conformation

GravatarNTodd - that is a devastating list. It needs to be a campaign ad for the Democratic candidate.

Gravatarset it up like a concert t-shirt

Bush's US Tour To Screw the Economy

Will Special stops on the USS Lincoln

GravatarPretty much all of BushCo's tenure has been marked by claims hovering around 400k a week! As we talked about a couple weeks ago, these numbers are certainly indicative of general economic health, but more telling is the fact that the economy still isn't creating jobs. We're down over 3 million since BushCo took over. The impressive thing about the jobless claims is that they are big sounding, and come out every week. Not sure which is really better to hammer on, though.

And for those of us who are counted in those statistics, I wish I could buy you a tall cold one. Keep the faith.

GravatarTexan - (so am I, by the way, and not to happy about having to admit it these days) good one. Really really good one.

GravatarEleven months out of work for me now. Just hoping to avoid being homeless.

GravatarHey Texan!

I lost my job in Connecticut a couple months ago.

You know CT, where GWBush left a scant 20-ish years ago? He at least went to college in Texas, right? Well, at least he really does like BBQ, beer, and blow...

He's a Yankee wolf in Texan sheep clothing.

GravatarTena,

Thanks for the shot and beer.

Joe, I know, I was out 11 months last year and damn near lost the house.

I've got an interview next week!!

Melanie

GravatarI never claimed he was, mdhatter. Can we say carpetbagger Isn't that one of the way they want to tar Hillary?

GravatarAnd how much is Bush planning to spend a day on his reelection? $425,000, was it? Maybe he's planning to buy every newly unemployed American a cup of coffee and a paper with good want ads circled.

Gravatar"but but but the tax cuts for the rich was supposed to help?!?
pansypoo | Email | Homepage | 06.28.03 - 4:16 pm | #"

You're right, pansypoo - none of the rich have lost their jobs this week.

GravatarThe rich work?

What people don't get is this isn't just a six month lack of work. This is years of employment and unemployment bouncing around. It's an ongoing saga without end.

GravatarWith the time we're all spending on the internet, try to do some virtual networking as well as virtual drinking. I left Barlow the URL of a company's career website and especially noting the analyst positions open in Plano and San Antonio; hopefully if all his visitors do the same, he'll be re-employed soon.

GravatarGarrison Keillor feels our pain. This evening he sang his new version of "Where have All the Flowers Gone." I'd like to find all the words, but here is what I remember.

First verse: Where have all the Democrats gone?

Second verse: Where have all the journalists gone? Embedded in Washington everyone. Oh, when will they ever learn and see what's going on (to thunderous cheers from his audience)

Third verse: Where have all the weapons of mass destruction gone? we searched for them through May and June, we'll find them very soon.

It's sad when a radio variety show and a comedy program (Jon Stewart) are the only major media outlets on which these views are clearly expressed.

GravatarOut of curiosity, what's the number when the economy is moving normally? What is it when it's expanding rapidly? Some people are going to lose their jobs even in a good economy, so I'm wondering what the reference point is. And clearly, some of those 7 million+ people are getting different jobs. What's that number? The number of newly unemployed each week doesn't seem to be very useful without more numbers to go with it. Pair it up with a comparison to the numbers during Clinton's terms, or with numbers showing actual net job loss, and it'll be more significant.

GravatarGet a job you lazy fuckers. Are you too good to flip hamburgers, for Christ's sake! Stop whinning like the little turds that you likely are. Go out and find a job like other decent Americans have done.

GravatarGeorge W,

All those burger flipper jobs are already taken by retired people who need to supplement their social security.

GravatarWe've been at 400k+ since Feb 15, so that's 18 weeks (if I counted on my fingers right).

Don't you understand? This is a video game for the administration -- they're going for the HI-SCORE!

GravatarBen,

Re: Prairie Home Companion. The show's web site says that this weekend's show will be online Tuesday, July 1. For your entertainment, though, here are the lyrics to "We're All Republicans Now?" Also, alternative lyrics here.

Gravatari'm semi-retired. I can't really live on my pension. I've been applying for low-wage part-time jobs in my areas of semi-skill, and I've found that emplyers can pick and choose. And why would they want an older guy who'd probably put a load on their health benefits?

GravatarZizka - you know what becomes more painfully obvious every day? They don't have a clue what life is really like for normal people. Not a freakin' clue.

I mean, Clinton could have just been saying that he felt our pain for political effect. But the fact is, he grew up in a single parent home with very little. We all know where Bush came from - he has absolutely no concept of real life. His failures and fuck ups have been picked up and fixed by his parents all his life. I don't have anything against rich people; lots of rich people raise decent kids who aren't spoiled brats. But the Bushes raised nothing but spoiled brats. A whole damn litter of them.

GravatarWe all know where Bush came from - he has absolutely no concept of real life.

Here's the part that I find baffling: Rank-and-file Republicans also know this stuff about Bush. Even if they didn't want to vote for Democrats, the GOP has a lot of people who are vastly more responsible than Bush. McCain, Dole, even Guiliani would do better by Americans than Bush. It's not just that he's a Republican—Bush and his cronies are quite simply the worst their party has to offer.

I know we frequently snipe at Republicans for being stupid like it's a big joke. And it has to be a joke—they can't all be embodiments of our cliché. But what other explanation is there for their support of this creep?

GravatarOut of curiosity, what's the number when the economy is moving normally?

I posted about that in our last discussion on jobless day (week of 6/15): "during the Clinton years, the average intial claims (seasonally adjusted) were 337,000 a week. Bush's average is 408,951 since he took office--428,600 since Feb 15. 21% higher overall than Clinton's figures, 27% increase in the last few months."

Gravataryou also have to look at job creation -- and it just aint happ'n--- maybe God makes jobs too

Gravataryou also have to look at job creation

That's the point I made last time this question came up:

Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2003 Employment Situation Summary: "Payroll employment has declined by 2.5 million since peaking in February 2001. The private sector has lost 3.1 million jobs over the same period, with manufacturing accounting for the bulk of the job losses."

That's about 110k lost a month. Contrast to the Clinton years: 240k added a month, for a total of 22.4 million jobs created."

GravatarMy sis-in-law does HR for a Houston hospital, and she says they are only hiring nurses. What the hell is a qualitative analyst, anyway?
