Former Vice President Al Gore, assailing U.S. policies in Iraq and at home, on Thursday argued that the Bush administration ``routinely shows disrespect'' for the ``honest and open debate'' that produces the truth.

Michael S. Dukakis Army Specialist 3d 1955-57.
To complete the "spot the differences", Dukakis apologists or a Dukakis version of Peggy Noonan weren't claiming that he actually drove the tank and blew up several structures in a live-fire exercise; in addition, his press secretary didn't claim that he HAD to use the tank because all of the jeeps were out of service.

Dukakis: He served in the U.S. Army in Korea fom 1955 to 1957.
How about an ad campaign wih these two pictures and the caption: "One served his country honorably in Korea; the other failed to show up for National Guard duty."

I just read Gore's speech today. It is quite good--very tough but measured and intelligent.
"I am proud that my party has candidates for president committed to those values. I admire the effort and skill they are putting into their campaigns. I am not going to join them, but later in the political cycle I will endorse one of them..."
While it is not completely clear, it does suggest that Gore might endorse one of the Democratic candidates before the nomination is decided. That would be interesting. Somehow, I don't think Joe will get his nod.
I also liked this:
"Robust debate in a democracy will almost always involve occasional rhetorical excesses and leaps of faith, and we're all used to that. I've even been guilty of it myself on occasion. But there is a big difference between that and a systematic effort to manipulate facts in service to a totalistic ideology that is felt to be more important than the mandates of basic honesty."

Michael Dukakis (Prof. Dukakis to me) did indeed serve in the military from 1955-57. He served as part of the post-war occupation force in Korea, near the town of Munsan, which itself is very close to the border with North Korea. Military service remains one of his fondest memories, mostly for the chance to meet so many great people and do things that you wouldn't ordinarily do in Brookline, Mass.
Of course, it was the norm at that time to serve in the military. That Prof. Dukakis did his duty is no surprise to anyone who knows him and his commitment to public service.
Today, it's not the norm to enter military service. Some do; most don't. I find volunteer military service to be more impressive than conscripted service, because it reflects an actual choice.
Curiously, you don't see a lot of politicians' children in the military. Charlie Moskos, a sociologist at Northwestern U. who's studied the military for 30 years, often says that military recruiting would benefit greatly if Chelsea Clinton or Jenna Bush were to enlist. I wonder why they don't?

Phil,
Volunteer military service is a choice and that does make it admirable. Economics and demographics factor into that choice, probably more than commitment to national service. The children of politician usually don't fit the economic or demographic profiles. But yeah it would be great to see some high-profile expressions of commitment to national service via volunteer military service.

Hudson, it's because the 'liberal media' repeatedly said so. They define reality. You didn't 'get it' because you're capable of independent thought. A significant chunk of this country simply accepts that Dukakis did something wrong, without thinking about whether or not it's true.

Dukakis knows he looks stupid. Bush thinks he doesn't.
Joan Didion did a great essay on the 1988 campaign. Dukakis was trying to look tough at every stop, and paid for it. H.W. Bush toured Jordan as veep and commanded that camels be at every tour stop, so he could be photographed next to one, and didn't. (Nothing says "Near East expertise!" like standing next to a camel.)

8/01
Deserves
Reelection 36
Someone
Else 42
Depends

Not
Sure 9
But then,
"If the election for president of the United States were held today, for whom would you vote if the candidates were . . . ?"
Has Bush in the 50's, with Hillary at 35, Kerry at 35, Lieberman at 33
So, the FOX viewers seem to be getting a tad fed up.

Well, I think footage of Bushgag landing in that plane on the carrier could be accompanied by sounds of a 10-year-old making plane sounds. brrrphrrprrph-brrrphrrprrph. That would be funny. Dukakis also got clobbered on this because of a very effective campaign ad by Lee Atwater using footage of the tank but with juiced-up sound effects to make the thing sound like a squeaky toy amusement park ride.
The tank ad was pretty much the coup de grace in a campaign that included Willie Horton, "card-carrying member" of the ACLU, and all kinds of other cheap tricks. I even recollect seeing a flyer that suggested Dukakis was in favor of bestiality because he favored gay rights (see, Rick Santorum didn't invent that one, it's been around for a while).
Dukakis, of course, though he could take the high road and didn't respond to any of it, so it all stuck. That did him in as much as anything else.
It's worth noting, BTW, that after the campaign, when Lee Atwater was dying of a brain tumor (or whatever it was) and wanted to get right with God, he called Dukakis to his hospital bed, and apologized to the man.

Because he looked comical rattling around in the tank. (You have to see the video.) He wasn't surrounded with adoring hand-picked military and media people like Commander Bunnypants was That is because Dukakis wasn't adored by the military. Most Democrats aren't. If those sailors and Marines on the USS Lincoln were all hand picked they must have been working on picking them for a couple of months. I saw 1000s of smiling, cheering and clapping young people. It looked like the entire ship's company was on deck for the Commander-in-Chief's arrival. They loved it.

You left out Dean's son who was recently arrested participating in a robbery and Al Gore's son who was arrested for driving over 100 mph in a 55 mph zone. Why don't they sign up for the military? Slater, et. al.:
Here's another I don't get: Why do the military hate the Dems? It's the R's who get them killed & maimed. The Dems actually have something other than disdain for diplomacy.
Remember during the 2000 campaign when Bush said something like: "If ordered to deploy today, two whole divisions of the Army would have to say, 'Not ready for duty, Sir'"? That was a slanderous lie and was exposed as such within a few days in Congressional testimony. (I'm flying on what Al Franken said on C-Span at the end of May--and he's putting it in his new book.)
Why do the military support a nimrod who maligns them, impugns their professionalism, and lies about their preparedness?
Or, as the sign in the Humvee window says: "One weekend a month MY ASS!"
