According to press reports, Issa had to fight back tears when making his announcement today. Now at first I figured Issa was tearing up because he'd spent such a big chunk of change on what's turning out to be someone else's party. But then I realized that wasn't it at all. He was just thinking how much more money he's going to have to spend to replace that sheet set and mattress and that fancy duvet because of the mess from that decapitated horse head he found in his bed this morning.

It seems to be like its more of a case of Democracy Run Amock.

Nothing like a cry baby election stealer. The Republican party From right to far-right are trying to destroy American democracy. Is there any possiblity that someone is going to be "elected" in this farce who got more votes than Davis did last year? The Republican party is always, always, trying to bar people from voting. It used to limit its dirty work to black people and other people of color and the poor. Now they are succeeding in destroying the vote of everyone. And the Supreme Court is giving them a hand.
We are about to lose the last pieces of democracy and the consequences will be bloody and violent. Dictators don't hold power without killing people.

I would call it an attack on democracy. When regressives can't win by, um, getting more votes, they resort to impeachment, Florida 2000, Scalia, Texas redistricting and the Calif recall.
Here's a scenario:
49.9% vote "No" to the recall
10% Gary Coleman
9% Larry Flynt
1% Arnold
80% a bunch of other candidates
Technical point: there are two questions on the ballot. The first is the recall, and the seond is if he is recalled, who will be governor?
So "No" on the recall won't count toward the vote for Gov.

I like Issa's contention (according to CNN): Issa says that it was never about gaining the office itself. That doesn't seem to jive with his website, http://www.issaforgovernor.com, which apparently suddenly is not operational anymore.
I always start a website advertising what I don't want to do.
recall tatics are being used to blakmail the Dem legislature in WI on a state power grab against local govts.

That's one way of looking at it, but to me the question is, is the overall will of the people represented at the end of the day?
With this many candidates in a plurality vote, you're almost guaranteed that the winning candidate will get less than 50% of the vote; possibly a lot less (technically, you could win with less that 1% in some scenarios). Now, if we were using instant runoff or another system where people are allowed to specify their preferences in more detail, I wouldn't have a problem with this.
But this situation is tailor-made for a small, tight-knit, unpopular political group to seize power over a majority which is split among a variety of opposition candidates.
Just because you're voting, doesn't mean the system is democratic.

Issa pretty much bankrolls the recall and now just walks away. Riordan is saying he feels "mugged". This thing reeks more of Karl Rove by the minute.
Just think.
An affable, but not too bright actor as figure-head governer while the real power is with a small group of party hacks,greed-heads,and other assoted nut jobs.
Almost like having old Ronnie back!

The State Supreme Court just ruled on that issue and ruled that just because you vote AGAINST the recall does not mean that you do not get to vote FOR a candidate, so all of those who vote against the recall will still have their votes counted towards choosing a new governor.

Issa was damned either way. He already was getting criticized for using the recall process to install himself as governor. By backing out, he's a coward, or something.
EssJay... your hypothetical tally should note that the 80% remainder would be evenly split between 81+ also-rans, lest one of them embarrass Arnold by getting more than 1%. It also assumes that the 49.9% Gray Davis fans can't agree on an emergency back-up.

laughing all the way to the bank
So, Issa is out 1.7 million. Boo freakin hoo. To someone with his deep pockets that's nothing. Yet by dropping out of the race for Governor, Issa has undercut the Davis campaign strategy to survive the recall. So much for equating the recall vote with Issa.
Now the other Democrat sharks can smell the Davis blood in the water and are joining the race for governor. So much for the unified front.
It's all over for Davis.

So Issa becomes history with the other bodies littering the CA political landscape: Those "biznessmen" who tried and failed to win a statewide office from almost out of nowhere like Norton Simon, Mr. Huffington, and Bill Simon.
I wonder if he'll be the last?
Nah, there'll be others, mark my words.
The ability to make money seems to have little correlation with the ability to make rational political judgements.

I agree that the only thing to do now is to turn this thing into complete farce. I'm not talking about a circus--I'm talking about making this thing resemble a Monty Python cartoon: Get a barbershop quartet to run for office. Have a Shriner campaign in a midget car. Run a giant paper maché head that shoots flame from it's eyes, whatever. Even if they can't get on the ballot, people could write them in.
Above all:
RUN CHARLES MANSON, RUN!
