According to the Agonist, and the Hindustan Times, or whatever, the Indian government has formally decided not to send troops, even with UN administration. That's a huge reversal. Indian troops--a division with a coherent, practiced command structure, and accusstomed to foot patrols, instead of vehicular ones, was on the list of the most wanted by Rumsfeld et al.

Before there were any polls on this subject:
Isn't Kucinich the only Dem candidate who declared in no uncertain terms that he would vote "NO" to Bush's request?
(During the debate at Morgan State University)
Perhaps those 51% also see that true humanitarian good can be done with that $87 billion, rather than helping turn the millionaire war profiteers into billionaires at the taxpayers' expense.
Who could have imagined that 51% of Americans actually hate America. Shocking.
Sure. Those are probably the same 51% of America Haters that voted for Gore in '00.

They're DEMANDING that Japan send troops? And they feel it necessary to point out they are aware Japan is an independent nation?

well, how about a quote from a Japanese LDP politician, complaining about the finance minister (Takenaka):
Under President Bush's order, Mr Takenaka is taking the lead in putting the Japanese economy in the doldrums.
Japan will probably flush some money down the toilet that is Iraq. But from what I see, they're dragging their feet about sending troops. It's very unpopular, and Kazumi might not survive it.

MSGOP published the Newsweek poll. They have a poll embedded in the story that compares national numbers to the current online numbers. Dems are trashing the numbers in the online poll. It was a bit like torturing Wolf.
When the White House was pressuring the Indian government to send troops a month ago, without UN cover, a White House memo was leaked to the South Asia Times that, paraphrased, called on India to proclaim its independent international stature in just the same way it did when it exploded its own A-bomb. Oh, that's an angle we need to play up.
Those are probably the same 51% of America Haters that voted for Gore in '00.

I wish. I really think that at least 40% of the populace bought into the comic-book theory that we could just blow up a bunch of stuff and everybody would resume their normal prostrated position. (Ok, that's unfair to the better comic books).
As far as digging into their pockets in order to do anybody besides themselves any good, well let me call attention to the recent tax referendums in both Alabama and (how quick we forget) Oregon, both of which had a principle goal of educating children, for god's sake.

The voters in 2000 knew that Bush couldn't run a business to save his life, that nearly every venture he's been involved in has tanked, and that even his presence on the board of a corporation has been a toxic influence in the past--and they still elected him to run the largets economy in the history of the world.
Let's face it. 50% of Americans are idiots.

Thanks, Anon. I was trying to offer an alternative to the House mail form with the second link above, but just realized it was way outdated.
(Your http://www.uscongress.com/ link also takes you to the House form.)
For a non-form, straight-up list of House Reps, try this:
"Earlier this year, Congress approved spending 79 billion dollars to help pay for the war in Iraq and the rebuilding effort there. Bush has now called for spending 87 billion dollars more. Do you support or oppose this additional spending for the war and rebuilding in Iraq?"
Support 38
Oppose 61
Not to mention . . .
"If Congress approves this additional 87 billion dollars, how do you think the government should pay for it - by (cutting spending on other programs), (increasing the federal budget deficit) or (eliminating the recent tax cuts)?"
Cut spending 28
Increase deficit 19
Eliminate tax cuts 41

I wish that $87 billion request would be the end of it, but it won't by a long shot. Remember that most of that money is slated to go to support the military operations over there. Besides pay for the troops, the equipment is rapidly going to hell in a handbasket. Sand has taken a heavy toll on all the equipment and aircraft. I also read today that they also need to purchase armor plates for flack jackets so that all the troops have them (That was a surprise - that all the troops didn't already have them.)
As much as they will rant, Congress isn't going to hold back giving the requested funds.
What I would like to know is why they so willingly approved Bush's war in the first place. I never bought Bush's sales pitch, and I'm was on the outside looking in.

"More than half, 51 percent, are opposed to Congress authorizing the additional $87 billion the president has requested for Iraq and the war on terrorism."
The biased pollsters lumped in the war on terror with the Iraq bail-out in their question. One can only wonder at what the response would have been without the question on Iraq being distorted with associations with Bin Laden (and they wonder why the public's confused).

About 35% - 40% of the voting public is rethuglican to the core, even with a dead girl or live boy. That is a given, no matter what the question is. The Gilespie-Rove strategery is for the thugs to get about about 10%-15% (just to get to 50.01% or so) more of the electorate on their side, and will do anything or say anything to get it. That fact that so many Americans off the bat are against these spending is really astounding, and can only get worse HalliBushton. I mean what can the PNAC crowd say to get Americans to think it is a good idea to spend $87 billion for schools and infrastructure in Iraq and nothing at home? These dudes are in some serious trouble, and the Dems should really extract damage during the process.

The japanese don't SAY no. Learn some japanese, and you'll find that:
"maybe" means "no"
"later" means "no"
"we'll think about it" means "no"
"that would be difficult" means "no"
"yes" means "no"
And just in case they ACTUALLY say "no" to GWB, it will mean "go fuck yourself to death, moronic gaijin".
Is Marcel Marseau (sp?) still alive? It would be sweet if the French appointed him to be the one to say "NON" to GWB.

Ad Absurdum should realize that the lumping together of 'The War on Terror' and of rebuilding is not reflective of exactly what the Administration's rhetoric does.
Saw Washington This Week on Friday and there was a woman on (don't recall her name) who noted that about 75% of the funds requested are for soldiers, the rest for rebuilding in Iraq and Afganistan. She also reported that the Chair of the Senate Appropriations was planning extensive hearings on these funds and was projecting approval -- but in December. But the most interesting this she reported was that current negotiations with the White House on passage of these funds include demands not only for oversight, but also for the head or heads of some cabinet members.
I haven't found this in any of the papers I read yet, but will post if I find it.

The Bush administration has almost killed me a couple of times with their particular brand of diplomacy. Let me see, I almost choked on my breakfast when Blackwill told us that India was one of the few countries that Bush listens to.
Then there was that line about 'proving our strength and bravery' by sending troops to Iraq [lunch].
Then there was the Top Secret US military report on Indo-US military co-operation. This was leaked shortly after the war in Iraq got over and we were treated to pages of harsh criticism ['arrogant Indians etc'] and their plans ['we can get them to agree to bases for high-tech weapons but we can always claim non-proliferation to stop any actual transfer of technology']. Hmm, this report should have been burnt instead of leaked.
And then, there is Christina Rocca: she mentioned bodybags and the 2004 US presidential elections. Advani gently reminded her that 2004 was election year in India as well.... [another near choking experience to kickstart the day]
None of the money is for soldiers. It is for Halliburton to not deliver water, meals and mail to the soldiers. It is also going to go to the Carlyle Group to buy their tanks that disintegrate under machine gun fire. None of that 87 billion is going to even pay for airfare for grunts to fly home for two weeks.

I'm not surprised since I'd say about 85% of Americans don't even know what the size of the total Federal budget is.
Anyone? ...Buler? ...Anyone?
That would be 2.2 Trillion dollars per year, so 87 billion would be ....what percentage of the Federal budget?
...anyone? ...Buler? ...Anyone?
That would be 3.9 percent. Or to put it another way, less than 4 cents of every tax dollar would go to the war against Terror.
That poll was really just a measure of people's ignorance more than anything else. Start throwing around the word 'Billions' and people's eyes glaze over. They don't hate America, they're just not very educated.
