HULK SMASHED

GravatarFINALLY.

Now on to the Neocons!

GravatarGO NOT-YANKEES!!!

GravatarThat kid pitched one helluva game.

I was spackling through a lot of it, but a 5-hit shutout in Yankee Stadium is pretty damn good.

Gravatarstranger, better watch that "spackling". It'll make you go blind.

Gravatarhopefully this is a sign of things to come.. the marlins won with a payroll one -third of the yanks...

its beginning to look like we'll need that kind of magic against g-dub's war chest...

GravatarEven though the Marlins somehow beat my Giants, I was rooting for Dontrelle Willis because he's a nice, down to Earth kid from Alameda, CA. Plus they're scrappy. We could learn something from the Fish.

Did you see this?

http://www.clark04.com/baseball/

GravatarHats off to the Marlins and their manager Jack Mackeon, the oldest manager in the mayors.

At least we beat bean town.

Seychelles, a yankee fan.

Gravatar

HA HA!!!

Gravatarhmmm... why is my post up there three times? i don't even like to listen to myself that much..

Gravatarhmmm... why is my post up there three times? i don't even like to listen to myself that much..

GravatarSecond year in a row that a wild card team has won it all. (And, I just won a $20 credit on Amazon.)

GravatarWell...just over 100 days 'til Pitchers & Cathers!

Gravatar>
As if there weren't enough reasons to want to saw off Florida and float it off into the sea.

Gravatarhmmm... why is my post up there three times? i don't even like to listen to myself that much..

Gravatarjeanie, don't refresh the comments window after you post. it'll repost.
you have to close it and then open it again.

Gravatarhmmm... why is my post up there three times? i don't even like to listen to myself that much..

Gravatari feel like such a stupid troll!

GravatarYankees lose, Yankees lose.

Better catch that JetBlue flight if you want to make that parade.

Oh yeah, fuck the Yankees.

Gravatardon't worry jeanie--it's a "feature" of haloscan.

GravatarAs a transplanted Atlantan and rabid Braves fan (I know, I know, don't ask) living in the Belly of the Beast, I can only say it's about fucking time. I don't know if my heart could have taken another parade down the Canyon of Heroes....

Gravatarwhat team was it that g-dub owned? the rangers? couldn't run them, so he thought he's give running the country a try?

GravatarMarlins defeat Yankees to win World Series. Tumultuous partying in Boston. Florida went to bed hours before game started.

Gravatarask me if i care.
stupid sox and cubs. Hope Fux is happy.

Gravatarlet the firings begin!
(and I am a die hard yankees fan too)

Yankees had no business losing game 5 - not with bases loaded one out and tied. They had no business sleepwalking thru game 1.

hats off to the marlins - beckett really bamboozled the yankees.

oh well, next year is sure going to be interesting with don zimmer gone and steinbrenner sure to heap abuse on his highly talented coaching staff.

I would guess that nobody is safe, except jeter, bernie and matsui (maybe posada).

new look yankees will show up in 2004 - without joe torre they will be dead meat. with him, they will reach the WS again.

GravatarYaaaawwwwwnnnnnnnnnn.

GravatarHaitch-Hay-Dubble-R-Aye, G-A-N spells Harrigan! Proud a all th' Irish that is in me! Ye'll nivir hear a word that's said agin' me!

Up the Irish!

Down with the Black and Tan!

Gravatari hate the yankees! i think they're run by the devil..

GravatarNow my dad will shut up for a while. Damn Yankees.

GravatarPS--I hate Florida, too, for beating Cleveland in '97.

GravatarJebbie Bush must be thinking it's a sign - right???

I really wish the Yankees had won this one folks...

GravatarMondo - no, really! Spackle, with a putty knife and drywall and tape and everything!!

Now, if I could see, I'd hit the 'OK' button.....

GravatarCNN reporting rockets hit hotel where Wolfie stayin in Bagdad. Too bad, they missed. Maybe next time.

GravatarYes! Apple defeats Microsoft!

GravatarIt's official--Bush is going down in 2004!

GravatarBAGHDAD (Reuters) - The Baghdad hotel at which U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz was staying was evacuated after a series of blasts early on Sunday, according to a journalist staying at the hotel.

A U.S. defense official said Wolfowitz was unharmed.

At least three people were wounded -- two of whom were carried away on stretchers -- a Reuters journalist at the Rashid Hotel said.

The blasts occurred at about 6 a.m. local time (11 p.m. EDT Saturday)

GravatarMoney can't buy ya love, not it seems, a World Series. Nice job Marlins. Thanks for the memories.

Gravatarredmenace,

stop spreading bad news.

don't you know that everything's rosy in eye-rack?

i mean Smirky went on the road to get out the good news and the "truth," since the SCLM isn't doing it.

he's tired of hearing negatives. things are great in eye-rack, new schools and all that. stop talking about those liberty hating eye-rackies and look at what's good about our occupation. sheesh.

GravatarYeah, I know, and this was the Al-Rashid hotel where all foreigners stay and Wolfie was there. I mean, could there be a better protected place in the whole friggin country?

GravatarRamadan... it's kind of like Tet, huh?

GravatarAre ocupation of eyeraq is GOD's will!
W told me so.

(I saw him in a vision with a halo 'round his head. Or maybee that was a pitchure on the enternet.
Anyway, GAWD bles W!!!!!

GravatarLifelong Yankees fan, here.

Just want to point out that I've never once gloated when they've won. Sports events are to be passionately enjoyed, then forgotten. They really shouldn't be used as a source of schadenfraud-induced trash talk.

Didn't we just recently agree that sports and politics don't mix?

GravatarBAGHDAD (Reuters) - The Baghdad hotel at which U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz was staying was evacuated after a series of blasts early on Sunday, according to a journalist staying at the hotel.

In related news, 100 children received shiny new bicycles.

GravatarBy the way, I can hardly be blamed for spreading bad news after all, I am the REDMENACE. Motars not rockets says CNN international.

GravatarDidn't we just recently agree that sports and politics don't mix?

religion and politics, maybe. not so sure about sports.

GravatarPS--I hate Florida, too, for beating Cleveland in '97.

Oh, god, I'm having terrible flashback...the pain...the pain...

Ntodd! Dude! You an Indians fan? I knew there was something I liked about you...

On the other hand, any time the NY Plutocrats don't go all the way is not a total loss.

Gravatar"Didn't we just recently agree that sports and politics don't mix?

I agree. Baseball Hall OF Fame doesn't.

GravatarCongrats Marlins. Pretty disappointing to see so many class-less Marlins fans though.

Tino, we needed you man!

GravatarAP reports rockets (sorry for OT, but at times like this, why are we discussing baseball, anyway?)

October 26, 2003
Rockets Hit Hotel Where Americans Based
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 12:30 a.m. ET

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Six to eight rockets struck the Al Rasheed Hotel early Sunday, where U.S. military and civilian employees stay, the U.S. military said.

A spokesman for the military command said there were an ``unknown number of casualties'' and a quick reaction force had been dispatched to the scene. U.S. officials declined further comment.

The hotel is located in an area tightly controlled by the U.S. military on the western side of the Tigris River near the headquarters of the U.s.-led coalition.

The Al Rasheed, made famous by CNN's telephone calls under fire and rooftop broadcasts during the 1991 Gulf War, was taken over by the American military when Baghdad fell to U.S. forces in April.

The hotel was built and owned by the deposed Iraqi government, was Iraq's marquee guesthouse. Inaugurated in 1982 for a summit of nonaligned nations, its style remains a cross between 1970s American kitsch and Soviet institutionalism.

The attack came one day after U.S military officials reopened a major bridge over the Tigris River to ease transportation in the capital and ended the nighttime curfew in effect since April.

Coalition officials took the moves in preparation for the holy month of fasting, Ramadan, which begins here Monday. The month is marked by nighttime festivities.

Iraqi authorities said the steps were taken because of an improved security situation in the capital.

GravatarAny bets that the reporter who sent in that last line must have known it was dripping with irony?

GravatarOT--
Was watching the CNN coverage of the Baghdad El-Rashid Hotel attack and they cut away to go back to fucking Barbara Bush on LKL.

I'd never really seen her talk at length before, and I could hardly stand to watch more than a few minutes. I discovered that the visceral repulsion I feel whenever I see/hear her son (a genuinely physical nausea-like response--and I know I'm not alone in this, it seems to be a fairly common phenomenon) is a matter of genetic inheritance, specifically from her. Daddy Bush doesn't effect me in the same way at all--he irritates me,but he doesn't make my stomach start to churn. But Bar has exactly that same beady-eyed, smug, score-settling, thin-skinned, unreflective malevolence as her whistle ass spawn.

Al Franken is totally right--W is *her* son.

GravatarOnce again the celebrating takes place in a distant city where less than 11000 fans turned out for a game as late as mid-September. I am a Cub fan and there is no God.

Gravataryuck the fankees

go fish!

Gravatar"Coalition officials took the moves in preparation for the holy month of fasting, Ramadan, which begins here Monday. The month is marked by nighttime festivities."

After Ramadan, all hell will break loose.
God bless our troops.
Goddamn George W. Bush.

GravatarGiambi on steroids (look at the weird shape of his face). I hope they nail Bonds and Giambi & Sosa because it is cheating plain and simple. Ruth did it on hot dogs, beer & women.....

GravatarAs a proud, third generation Yankee hater, I'm delighted.

As a frustrated Oakland A's fan, I'm getting less and less satisfied with having the least expensive trip to the post-season every year.

And as an Oklahoman I have only two words:

BOOMER SOONER!

GravatarHow can a South Florida team beat a New York Team? Isn't South Florida where New Yorkers go for vacation? Didn't a New York TV network popularize the myth of South Florida with Miami Vice? Oh, I get it -- it's the paradigm of the child culture beating its patent culture, like the American colonists delaring independence from England. Or maybe Oedipus. Or can't you mix politics and sports? Beats me. I'm a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. Never forgame Dem Bums from leaving Brooklyn, thus breaking the aspect of the social contract that linked teams to home towns. All bottom line corporate culture now. So, if the Yankees were the best team that money could buy, was the Marlins' win an anticapitalist thing? Antiglobalism? Anti-Wall-Street? Was rooting for the Yankees like rooting for Microsoft? Why arent Islamic radicals attacking Microsoft? Are they yankee fans? yankee go home. I'm confused.

GravatarAt least MSNBC is covering the Baghdad attack live. CNN has moved on from its evening-long Bushorama to rerunning old stories about Kobe now. Jeebus. Isn't it moments like this that CNN exists for?

Update: MSNBC has moved on to some canned piece about some horrific murder or other. And Fox is talking about the DC snipers. Our media blows.

Gravatar"CNN reporting rockets hit hotel where Wolfie stayin in Bagdad."

That reconstruction is going well.
Reading Fisk earlier:

"You need to take a military escort to reach Baghdad airport these days. Yes, things are getting better in Iraq, according to President Bush - remember that each hour that goes by - but the guerrillas are getting so close to the runways that the Americans have chopped down every tree, every palm bush, every scrap of undergrowth on the way. Rocket-propelled grenades have killed so many GIs on this stretch of highway that the US army - like the Israelis in southern Lebanon in the mid-80s - have erased nature. You travel to Baghdad airport through a wasteland. Heathrow it isn't."

a

Gravatar"Our media blows" WendellGee

Course it does. They afterall hailed the Iraq donors (read: moneylenders) conf in Madrid as a huge success.

More than two-thirds of what was collected will have to be paid back.

Nice one!
a

GravatarNo, I haven't lost my marbles.

I disagree Tom, you have clearly spent too much time hanging out at the hash bars.

GravatarCnn International is covering it. Anyways why would Americans care what happens in Iraq?

GravatarNot surprising they aren't covering the rocket attack more. People were seriously injured, but it's nothing compared to the ferry crash.

GravatarYes, and I'm sure more people were killed on the nation's highways today. Move along, nothing to see here.

GravatarBut Bar has exactly that same beady-eyed, smug, score-settling, thin-skinned, unreflective malevolence as her whistle ass spawn.
WendellGee

great descriptive adjectives! I think you've got him!

GravatarFuck the fucking Yankees. Fuck'em right in the ear.

GravatarNever forgame Dem Bums from leaving Brooklyn, thus breaking the aspect of the social contract that linked teams to home towns.

The Boston Braves and St. Louis Browns both moved to new cities before the Dodgers did.

GravatarANOTHER REASON WHY FOX SUCKS: When Beckett laid the third out tag on Posada, their cameras didn't immediately swing to Steinbrenner's booth and record George bitchslapping his nearest lickspittle.

A tip of the cap, from a lifelong Giants fan, to the champs of baseball... damn, The Florida Marlins.

Gravatar"what team was it that g-dub owned? the rangers? couldn't run them, so he thought he's give running the country a try?"

Yes, jeanie, Dubya used to be "Managing General Partner" of the Rangers. His big personnel move was trading Sammy Sosa to the Chicago White Sox for a large pile of shit.

Gravatarwhat team was it that g-dub owned? the rangers? couldn't run them, so he thought he's give running the country a try?

I've suddenly started picturing an America led by President Steinbrenner.

Hell, if we had to elect an evil, sleazy, megalomaniacal bastard, couldn't we have gotten one who knows how to win?

It's official--Bush is going down in 2004!
Scott

I'd be a bit more excited for the Cubs-Yankees finale fantasy I spent half a month 'spackling' to.

This one... it kind of feels like the equivalent of inaugurating President Lieberman.

GravatarATRIOS!! While you're sleeping and/or boffing Mrs. A, people are bombing Wolfowitz! Get your priorities straight, dude!

GravatarFrederick: Steady. That piss-ant Wolfowitz will spin the attack... well, somehow: "Even had my life been forfeit..."; "It's with some little pride that I've endured what our brave troops..."; "The cowardly strikes of a ever diminishing band of fanatics..."

Or the ever poular: "Bring 'em on"!

GravatarOne Evil Empire down, one to go! :D

GravatarYankees lose. YES! As a Sox fan the only thing better than winning is watching the Yankees lose.

GravatarHaving suffered through a childhood and adolescence of rooting for the hapless Detroit Tigers (with the glorious exception of 1968 and 1984), I can say I am very proud of my adopted hometown team, the Marlins. And no, this is not a feather in Jebbie's cap because South Florida is hated by north Florida because we "got all them commie pinko fags and refugees from the Caribbean and such who talk funny" down here.

Putting aside all the politcial and money issues, it was just great baseball for the last month, and even if your team didn't win, it was exciting to watch. Thanks for the ride, guys!

GravatarNtodd! Dude! You an Indians fan?

Yup! Grew up near Toledo, so it was either the Tribe or the Tigers (Cinci was too far south for us to care about). I rooted for Detroit for a while when my dad was commuting up there for work, but in reality I've pretty much been a Browns and Indians fan. Not a lot of joy in Mudville, but at least we're not Cubs or BoSox fans...

GravatarAs a die-hard Cincinnati fan (Reds and Bungles), I say a pox on all your houses.

GravatarGo Tribe! Well, maybe next year....

I'm another ex-Clevelander who's never unhappy to see the Yanks lose, but...to the Marlins? Ick!

GravatarThe Marlins won? Well, good for them, I suppose.
The Yankees lost? Aww, better luck next time.
Now, if only I cared one way or another. It's just a game, boys and girls.

GravatarNot a lot of joy in Mudville, but at least we're not Cubs or BoSox fans

There's another team with a longer tenure than the BoSox with not winning the World Series. Chicago's lost team, the ChiSox. Where's their sympathy? :P

Here's an article in the Sun-Times about the David-Goliath theme of the World Series.

GravatarBack on topic, ya gotta check out Steve Gilliard's great post, "Yankees Lose, Yankees Lose!" (Scroll down)

http://stevegilliard.blogspot.com/

GravatarThe Philadelphia Athletics also moved not once but twice (Philly to KC to Oak).

GravatarOh, Bill, if only you knew. I mean, yeah, it's just a game but please, begrudge us not for caring deeply one way or the other (provided we don't commit dumb acts of violence while caring). I grew up with baseball as did many others and since 1994, this game has sucked big time because the Yankees spend much more money to get players, win games and then brag about how big their heart is, that they've got 'Yankee magic' whatever the hell that could be (maybe McCarver and Buck could tell us? they talk about it enough). So seriously Bill, pardon us men and women, along with boys and girls, for caring deeply that the Yankees must lose. It's the only way the toweringly obnoxious Steinbrenner can feel pain.

Baseball on it's own is a helluva game, particularly come playoff time. That wasn't good enough for the owners and players and since '94, only the rich get to win on a consistent basis (with the notable exception of the Oakland A's). Calling baseball only a game is like saying Hamlet is only a play. Sure, it's true in the literal sense but pardon us for saying in response that maybe you just don't get what the bid deal is. And that's okay, too.

GravatarUh, make that 'big' deal. (cough).

GravatarAs a lifelong Yankees fan (the greatest sports franchise in US history) I was not all that surprised to watch us lose. The Yanks batting is pathetic when considering the talent they have in the lineup. They need a new batting coach. Losing is not that big a deal really. It's getting there that counts an awful lot. I have not read anything yet, but am curious how low the viewer ratings were for this series.

GravatarThe thing I can't quite figure out about americans is that some are rabid baseball fans, yet they find cricket confusing...try to explain to someone who has never played before how the game works...before all the nuances come into play

GravatarThor, FWIW, my in-laws are Indian and they tell me that Cricket is a game that puts baseball to shame. I appreciate their enthusiasm for it but perhaps because I'm American I'll be damned if I can figure the game out.

GravatarOrioles ex-fan here, although I've never forgiven Peter Angelos for letting Mussina go. As happy as I am to see the Yanks lose, let's not forget that Jeffrey Loria is Evil Incarnate and doesn't need any encouragement from the Baseball Gods.

Gravatartater -

"class-less marlins fans"? i can only assume you root for the Empire.

it's like the 'pugs calling liberals mean-spirited. or the pot calling the kettle black.

go fish.

GravatarWhat a great game. That kid pitched his ass off - how perfect that he tagged the last out.

GravatarBTW: as far as cities that have been abandoned by Baseball go, noone holds a candle to the Nation's Capital. Nary a championship since Walter Johnson...hardly a decent team even..."First in War, First in Peace, and Last in the American League." Year after year of supporting lousy teams with chintzy ownership...the franchise leaving not once but twice...and still no team since '71 in one of the biggest & wealthiest metro areas in the country--still denied a franchise in the face of any concievable market logic or sense of fairness.

Thor--any sites you can recommend for a basic cricket education? I'd love at least to have some inkling what those sports reporters on the BBC are talking about...

GravatarGood "Get Fuzzy" today on Yankees fans.

But a pox on the American League in general, coming from someone who was a Tigers' fan as a child.

The DH is the WORST "new" rule in any major sport. Giambi couldn't play in the Nat'l League parks cuz he was hurt, but move to an Amer. League park and he can hit, no matter how bad his knee is. That's not RIGHT.

In baseball, everyone should have to play the field, and everyone should have to swing the bat, and giving up an at-bat for a quality pitching performance is a trade-off managers have to judge continuously throughout the game. Amer. League pitchers can just go out there and throw until their arms fall off, and their managers don't have to worry their pretty heads late in the game when a pinch hit could win, but then again so could the pitcher.

The Yankees just happen to be the worst of the worthless of the "softball" league.

GravatarMe not frist, probably.

GravatarWhoa! Frist!

I'm retiring from commenting now. Nice semi-knowing y'all.

Oh, and yuck the Fankees.
