Actually there's nothing all that new here. Phyliss Schlafly was saying the very same thing 20 years ago ie. "all women should stay home except me."
Curiously she never connecte her son's gayness to the fact that he had an "absent mother."
But then since he was working for her (and does to this day, along with his lover) I'm sure that was OK too.

Susan Faludi's "Backlash" was one of the first "doorstop" books I read cover to cover. Normally I don't like social or cultural criticism very much but Faludi writes a good argument. I read "Stiffed" after that, you should check it out, too, it's almost as good.

I really appreciate women like this. After all, so far as I can tell from her comments, we fathers bear no responsibility if our kids watch immoral T.V., and presumably none if they later use drugs, eat sushi and don't pay, and get partial birth abortions.
It's nice to be off the hook. Can't wait to tell my wife the news.

Roberta Combs is one thing but Ladies Against Women is quite another. The only group I am aware of, and that the Crooked Timber link appears to point to, is a comedy troupe that does wonderful parodies. At least that was the case when I saw them in Minneapolis in the late '80s. I'm actually a card carrying (well to be truthful no longer carrying - I may have lost the card) member - of course, my husband had to sign the card authorizing my membership

I'm confused by the L.A.W. Are they for real? The pictures in thei rscrapbook show them rallying... but then, the over the top rhetorical platform... My head hurts.
OK God I get the point! Can I leave Bizarro world now?

a last post on the basics of HTML Ladies-against-women style:
"We find the technical aspects of this Web technology quite alarming, and even the little codes behind the pages incidious. The use of the little code "br" is quite suggestive of ladies' underthings... Whoever invented this code should have his mind washed out with a nice floral-scented soap."
-From LAW's website
Is it really for real? Is it satire? Is it a bad SNL sketch? What is it?

Well, you got it. Maybe I should have been more clear that I meant "women like this" referred to Combs, not Faludi.
Unfortunately, I thought it was obvious.

LAW is a comedy group of long standing. I think I first heard of them in the early Reagan years, but maybe they've been around longer than that.

One of the few great moments of the Reagan administration was the one where they announced that they weren't going to offer a position to Phyllis "more than 200 days on the road in support of women staying home" Schlafley [sp? whatever] because they knew she wanted to get back to her family and they appreciated her sacrifice of being away from them during the election.
The look on her face when the media asked her about it. Something to carry with one through life.

"Ladies Against Women" was first used as a joke term for Phyllis Schlafely's organization (whatever it's really called). I seem to remember a "Bloom County" cartoon about it.

Let's not forget Margaret Atwood's near-classic, The Handmaid's Tale - depicting a fundamentalist Christian America where (as is true in many fundamentalist societies) the women of the society take a leading role in maintaining their own second-class status.

David,
you have hit the nail on the head! What women like Phyllis Schlafly are indeed saying is: All women should stay home EXCEPT ME.
And I read "Backlash" when it first came out and Susan Faludi signed my copy when she visited Melbourne in 1993. I agree with you, atrios: EVERYONE should read "Backlash".
I have not bred but, together with my husband, own a dog. Sometimes I wish I could stay at home with Kelly but more often than not, I'd rather go to work. Up to you to decide.
