"if the admin (such as it is) insists that the two helicopters lost today "crashed" rather than "were shot down by hostile fire", will anyone believe them? How could we challenge them on this, yet another, lie?"
According to reports, they crashed when one of the choppers was attempting to evade a missile attack:
At least 17 US soldiers were killed and five seriously injured on Saturday when two US Black Hawk helicopters collided over northern Iraq as one was reportedly trying to evade an attacking missile, according to US military and Iraqi police sources.
"There are 17 now dead, five injured and one soldier is unaccounted for," a US Central Command official said.
The crash west of the city of Mosul came as the US-appointed Iraqi interim Governing Council announced elections would be held in Baghdad by the end of 2005.
An Iraqi police officer said he saw a Black Hawk helicopter intervening as assailants ambushed a US foot patrol in the area.
A missile was then fired at the chopper, which crashed into a second Black Hawk as it tried to dodge the missile, he said.
The Central Command official declined to comment on that report, saying, "The incident is still under investigation, and the results will be released as soon as they are available. We will not speculate on the cause of this crash".
That guy just likes kissing men in uniform. Not that there is anything wrong with that. He probably is not normally allowed to do that in Iraq. Good for him!

Sounds possible if you add that it occurred at 6:30pm Iraq time, it was dark, and neither of them probably had their running lights on since it is my understanding that they are under blackout orders. Therefore it is likely they couldn't see each other. What a waste this all is! Has anybody heard from our hero who lives in the White House?

Me: Oh come on its the SAME guy kissing two soldiers!
reading that above its almost as if the insurgents created a helicopter trap, they attacked a patrol, expected a heliborn fast response unit, and had countermeasures with them accordingly, even if they collided, the net result was argueably better from the resistance perspective, it seems we have encountered another strella type system, that was broung and on site as a countermeasure, they really are going to school on us....

Yes, it was one guy at one photo op. I believe these were taken at the toppling of the Saddam statue, which was a staged fakery, and was attended by formerly exiled Iraqis, not a spontaneous outpouring of oppressed Iraqi liberation and love for Americans.

Hey, laugh all you want, but when I saw these posted on Eschaton back in March(?), I saved them to my hard drive and sent them out to all my email contacts. My father and father-in-law (both pushing 70 at this stage) were completely flabbergasted by this, and wanted to know what the Hell was going on. Both of them have remained suspicious of the current administration, even though one of them is a pretty straight-and-narrow-conservative (y'know, like they used to be in the old days), and they are both old enough (and smart enough) to see that this might be really similar to the deftly-crafted propaganda that they both saw first-hand, one in Germany, one in the USA waay back in the 1940s.
The spooky part is that both said that they thought that they would never see that kind of stuff again in their lifetime...

BBC radio reported this morning that witnesses saw one helicopter in flames before the collision. Other witnesses claim to have heard or seen ground fire before the crash.
In 1969 -- when British soldiers first started patrolling in Ulster -- relieved Catholics served the boys cups of tea in their front gardens. Things change.
A google search reveals the trooper on the Newsweek cover (the name 'Rega' is visible on his helmet) to be a PsyOps reservist from Pittsburgh, now safely home.
Rega's family had not heard from him since the start of the war and were overjoyed to learn from the photo that he was okay. "It was a relief to see how good he looked," Rega's mother said. Eschaton readers concur, Mrs. Rega, and so apparently did that no-good, two-timing Mister Stripèd Shirt.

Yeah, Newsweek is piling on... in obsequiously hedging tones (read inside)... NOW. They had ample opportunity to question the "mess" back when it mattered, and there were plenty of unanswered questions.
And by the way, they could do us all a favor and point out that it's at least a $170 billion mess, and likely to be in the $220 billion range by Q204.
Yeah, damn liberals, we're never satisfied. We'd love to see the OUTRAGE!!! these rags loved to wallow in back when presidential cum stains were the greatest menace to the Republic.

Even it was the same soldier on both covers (I don't think it is, though), they're two completely different shots. I don't agree. His upper right center tooth looks distinctly whiter than the other teeth in both photos; in both photos it looks like it eclipses the second right tooth. It looks crooked in Newsweek's picture and not in US News's, but I think that's the angle. Sorry to harp on this - it seems like a silly point and I'm not sure why I keep on it - but the more I look at the photos, the more convinced I am that they're the same person.
Points of similarity (non-dental):
o eye bags
o eyebrows
o two smudges below and outside right eye
o recessed mouth (or prominent cheeks, I guess)
o little bulge above nostril
For what it's worth. Does anyone have higher-resolution pictures?
