*sigh*
so was it ever
Vietnamese imperialists threaten our national security, as seen in their treacherously, deceptively small attack on our ships lawfully patrolling US waters in the Tonkin Gulf
Regardless of Israeli peace offers and overwhelming and repeatedly proven Israeli military superiority, all inherently warlike Arabs will settle only for their (own) extermination
at the same time said inherently warlike Arabs lack the manly warrior -ness of the Aryans, the Jews or Americans, and can eventually be "beaten" into submission or "crushed between the rocks and the buildings"
Nazi Germany is our friend and can be trusted to keep back the Bolshevik menace
Joe Stalin is our friend and can be counted on to soften the Nazi menace before 25 million Soviet soldiers later we invade
Japanese pilots are incapable of flying aircraft effectively because their eye openings are too small
Cuba plans on expanding northward
Nicaragua plans on expanding northward
the Huns eat children and slice off the breasts of Belgian women
Secular Iraq is a threat, regardless of Iran and Kuwait disagreeing, and is tied to ideologically opposite religionists who have repeatedly called for the death of Saddam
Spain blew up the USS Maine in Havana harbor because of irrational Spanish evil-ness
Blacks, incapable of doing white man's work themselves, are only concerned with civil rights as Muscovite tools seeking the implosion of America
Homosexuals, allowed to serve openly in our military, will weaken us with constant and purposeful fellatio/cunnilingus

This myth is a lynchpin in the admins pre-war spin. Its the single simple direct link in the Saddam to 9/11 WTC linkage myth that underlies support for the Iraq war. If they publically admit that this meeting never took place then a key strut in the admins argument caves in taking the whole thing down. As long as they can keep the "possibility" alive by challenging everyone to prove a negative then they can stretch out the life of this BS. They won't let this die.

The curious or doubtful will surely take comfort in the news that every single item in our comment of 8:55 was paraded around pretty much as presented here, with minimal or no exaggeration, and no change in those cases that seem most likely, e.g., the Japs not being able to threaten our Pacific assets because their squinting eyes prohibited modern aviation. This was literally actually told to reassure Americans wary of Yamato expansion in Manchuria. Learn from the past, people. They're not just lies, they're stupid, silly, easily punctured lies, and we let ourselves die for them.

Cableism, a lie repeated so often it acts as the truth, for the time being. You could sell the viewers of FOX, CNN, MSNBC any lie, no matter how many times it is disproven. Chris Wallace, a FOX hound by his own account is a prime example. He's swallowed the kool aid.
Republicans are liars, they begin by lying to themselves and go on from there.

how could we forget (these are a little exaggerated):
The Soviet Union threatened us at all times and was never more concerned with infrastructure than global domination
Al Gore claimed to have directly and physically invented DarpaNet
Howard Dean wants to change our flag design from stripes to bars
Lieberman has a contract in legible writing demanding Al Gore's verbal, material, emotional and, ah, "personal" support in all things and at all times
George Walker Bush won the popular, electoral and "real" vote in Florida, thanks in part to that crazy Zionist Buchanan and that wildly popular Nader, but Democrats tried to change this by denying the counting of invalid or late military votes because they hate the military
Rush Limbaugh never said anything about drug users
Rumsfeld's demand that the inspectors be given more time does not contradict his previous position
Murdering mothers in front of their children in no way guarantees that the kid will grow up with an irrational, all-consuming, suicidal hatred of you, thus the safest way to fight irrational murderers is to bomb the hell out of civilians.
women always want it; "consent", like the Palestinian people, is an invention of undersexed liberal ideologues
there's nothing threatening or illegitimate about drawing up lists of people you disagree with, without attempting to engage and debate their ideas
come to think about it, once you start on this, you can't really stop...

Ok, now only 49 bulletpoints that provide evidence that Iraq and Al Qaeda had an operational relationship in the Weekly Standard article to shoot down.

Ok, now only 49 bulletpoints that provide evidence that Iraq and Al Qaeda had an operational relationship in the Weekly Standard article to shoot down.
Get to work!
Actually, most of them have already been shot down, or else are based on presumptions and information that aren't verified.
Are you Nedra Pickles?
"Despite proving that one major leg of proof for going into Iraq has been shattered, critics forgot to reiterate why every other leg of proof is also wrong again, which leads many supporters of the war to conclude that those legs were never debunked. In addition, Grover Norquist is a great lay."

women always want it; "consent", like the Palestinian people, is an invention of undersexed liberal ideologues
There's also this version:
Men always want it, and will do anything to get it; women (who don't really want it unless you support them) are needed to civilize men via marriage, hence, gay men even in marriage will just live to have sex, so we must not allow gay marriage.

Strangely enough, I was actually in Prague in early April 2001. My wife and I went there on a belated honeymoon. It was quite lovely and we had a very nice time. We saw no terrorists meeting in shady alleys, huddled together muttering conspiritoeialy, though.

Anybody else notice that this paragraph, the fourth,
Reports that an Iraqi spy had met with Mr. Atta in Prague first circulated soon after the attacks on New York and the Pentagon, but they have been in dispute ever since.
is separated by, what?, 15 paragraphs before the final paragraph:
American records now indicate that Mr. Atta was in Virginia Beach, Va., in early April 2001, when he was supposedly in Prague to meet Mr. Ani.
I can understand not wanting to give the whole story away in the first three paragraphs, but those middle fifteen are filled with reasons why the Qaida and Iraqi informants could/might be lying to interrogators. Talk about being buried in the story. Sheesh.

Must be a time warp thing. June 2000 vs April 2001.
The Czech BIS have hard evidence that Atta was in Prague in 2000 and the New York Times writes about 2001?
If this is a debunking by the New York Times it is piss poor at doing it.
It is entertaining to read Justin on this. "CIA good" in this case but the "CIA bad" when the debunk his Israeli spy story.
If you put the Czech BIS against the CIA/FBI the BIS wins hands down in the intelligence arena.
No debunking here, just alot of hearsay by a known spy, (there is a reliable source). And by an agency that ia a "miserable failure" under Director George Tenet.

David Brooks picked a bad day to stop sniffing glue, to paraphrase Airplane the Movie. He uses today's column to promote the truth and accuracy of Chimpy's foreign polic while on the front page is a story about the Iraq-Queda lie. In fact, if I read the story correctly, ChimpyCo. knew the story was full of shit in Spetember 2002. So everything they said after that was a lie. But in the world of BoBo Brooks, this is actually the mark of truth.
Giv a big piece of Turkee to Brooks!

Yeah, well, too bad that those records can't be found, so the assertion that Atta couldn't have been in Prague is unprovable.

What surprises us is that the Times itself did a very convincing debunking of this on Dec. 16, 2001, by Chris Hedges and Donald McNeil and seems to have utterly forgotten it.
Salient graf not included anywhere else:
American intelligence officials who believe that Mr. Ani is a low-ranking diplomat of little consequence emphasize that the Iraqi National Congress, the opposition group seeking to overthrow Saddam Hussein, has an agenda and a history of coloring fact to suit its needs.
As if the waters were not muddied enough, some in Prague who knew the
diplomat say he met with a used car salesman named Saleh from Nuremberg,
Germany, who looked like Mr. Atta. "He is a perfect double for Atta," said a Syrian businessman who has lived in Prague for 35 years and says he knew the diplomat and the car salesman. "I saw him several times with Mister Consul."
On Friday, a major Czech newspaper, quoting Czech intelligence officials,
offered still another theory: the Mohamed Atta who came to Prague last
April was not the hijacker but a Pakistani of the same name.
"He didn't have the same identity card number," an unidentified Interior Ministry official told the newspaper Mlada Fronta Dnes. "There was a great difference in their ages, their nationalities didn't match, basically nothing -- it was someone else." The details of the meeting, as reported by the Czech authorities, remain vague. The Czech intelligence service has not said how it knows the meeting took place, or what was said.
To be fair though, Edward Jay Epstein, with whom we tangled recently on Slate over this, says the evidence that Atta was in the US at the time is also suspect, since it relies on car rental records, and since Atta didn't have an FL license at the time he couldn't have rented a car in the US.
