This myth is a lynchpin in the admins pre-war spin. Its the single simple direct link in the Saddam to 9/11 WTC linkage myth that underlies support for the Iraq war. If they publically admit that this meeting never took place then a key strut in the admins argument caves in taking the whole thing down. David Brooks picked a bad day to stop sniffing glue, to paraphrase Airplane the Movie. He uses today's column to promote the truth and accuracy of Chimpy's foreign polic while on the front page is a story about the Iraq-Queda lie. In fact, if I read the story correctly, ChimpyCo. knew the story was full of shit in Spetember 2002. So everything they said after that was a lie. But in the world of BoBo Brooks, this is actually the mark of truth.

Yeah, well, too bad that those records can't be found, so the assertion that Atta couldn't have been in Prague is unprovable.
What surprises us is that the Times itself did a very convincing debunking of this on Dec. 16, 2001, by Chris Hedges and Donald McNeil and seems to have utterly forgotten it.

To be fair though, Edward Jay Epstein, with whom we tangled recently on Slate over this, says the evidence that Atta was in the US at the time is also suspect, since it relies on car rental records, and since Atta didn't have an FL license at the time he couldn't have rented a car in the US.
