Speaking of Nedra Pickler, did anyone hear the interview by Bill Moyers last night on NOW with Dorothy Rabinowitz, WSJ? She trashed Coulter, well, mildly, but she's obviously an old-fashioned lady who hates to speak ill of anyone!!!
Rabinowitz: ... we certainly believe that there were Communists in Hollywood, et cetera, et cetera. And Bob Bartley certainly had the same loathing for Senator McCarthy that I did. And I think it's a great mistake to connect Ann Coulter with the kind of thing that we do or think. I mean…
MOYERS: What[!!!!]… explain that to me.
RABINOWITZ: I don't mean to demonize her because she says many things that are true and many things that one agrees with. But there are certain things that you cannot in your extremist....Being a commentator and being a commentator on television now, you know, the brassy kind of extremists, pushes you into extremes of… and I think in a kind of cynical way, saying things that you think are perfectly okay. But they're not. And one of them is to say that Senator McCarthy was a great hero. Which, of course, he was not.
It was better on tv. You have to read between the lines. But she's not a fan of Coulter's.

Subject: Question about your article "Surging
Front-Runner Dean..." (Dec. 12)
Ms. Pickler,
I read your article in the Washington Post titled "Surging Front-Runner Dean Under Attack." I was quite confused by this sentence you wrote:
"...But when he criticizes Bush's links to Lay, Dean never mentions that Enron's mismanagement was not the result of the president's tax-cut package."
There is no logic to this sentence. This is an example of a post hoc fallacy, also known as a post-hoc, ergo propter hoc fallacy. In other words, the second clause is a non-sequitur, especially in the context of the article. I am amazed that your editor didn't cut this sentence, if not for its fallaciousness then for its needless editorializing.
I've looked up some other articles you've written and have noticed that there is a definite, hopefully unintentional, right-wing bias in much of your coverage of the campaign thus far. You would be well advised for your own credibility's sake to accurately and objectively report the facts, instead of injecting your own views into your reporting.

Dean's rivals are accusing him of giving special breaks to Enron, which he did. But as I included in my story, Enron's corporate wrongdoing had nothing to do with Vermont law. It's interesting that I get e-mail from some readers who accuse me of having a liberal bias, and some who accuse me of having a conservative bias. It's my goal to tell both sides of the story and let the voters decide.

But those tax breaks also had nothing to do with Enron's corporate wrongdoing.
Well, Nedra admits wrongdoing on the part of Enron. That's a good thing.
Nedra, why hasn't anyone at Enron's corporate office been convicted of wrongdoing? How long has it been since the story broke? (We were supposed to feel sorry for his wife 'cause she had to sell stuff. Oh, they had to sell a property or two.)
Gosh, those Houston employees must still be kinda angry. Some lost their retirement savings and had to go back to work.
This isn't about Nedra. They love that you are focusing on her. All your outrage is wasted. The real story here is US media ownership.
The key fact here is that the AP editors haven't challenged her writing. It is impossible to imagine this sort of writing being allowed over the course of numerous stories under AP's previous ownership.
Always they test the limits, break the rules, find out how far they can go before outrage sets in. When they do go a little too far they quickly apologize and withdraw, but immediately, subtlely, they start testing the limits again.
First it was Rush, then his clones. The newspaper columnists began to be replaced by those with more extreme viewpoints (how many liberals get represented in syndicated columns today versus conservatives?) Fox showed up on cable about the same time Grodin got replaced by Matthews as part of MSNBC's shift to the right. Gannett takes over local papers and gently shifts the story selection of the front pages.

When Dean criticizes Bush for giving away tax breaks to Kenny Lay and the boys and Enron, he's talking about corporate America, using an example that is understandable to most people. Have I mentioned that liberals sporting slightly disapproving glances at Bush are engaging in "hate speech"? Well, they are. I'd say we should shoot them, but only someone as pretty as Ann Coulter could get away with that, and I'm not exactly a prom queen (although my college boyfriend called me "cute and spunky"). This morning, I just read Nedra Pickler's Article, in the Miami Herald, on Gov. of New Mexico, Bill Richardson. Having watched the televised speech she is reporting on, Richardson's "New Realism" speech at CSIS, and then reading the opening paragraph of Pickler's article, I was shocked. I was shocked at how a sentence could be written, about factual statements made throughout the progress of ? an hour of intelligent speaking, in such a way that three specific issues, and statements made on those issues, could be so misrepresented. They are set up in a very pointed way as to direct clear reactions to hot issues in a very singular way. I am not surprised. Of course this is the way most of discussion and debate is presented and many people seem to be trained to think like this. It is so clear, that I think you could use this in some unversities' journalist curriculum as an example of how statements are created with bias or for various cause or effect. Seriously, without any political favor, purely as an academic exercise sit yourself down and watch the speech and then read her opening paragraph. The article as a whole has a much more valid reporting quality but the opening paragraph is clearly the effect the AP has on our public debate. Here are the links. Please watch and read for yourself first. Then I would be happy to explain what picture I find the paragraph to be painting about this politicians positions. The easiest place to find the video happens to be on this political website. Tell me what you think? http://www.americaforrichardson.org/ http://www.miami.com/mld/miamihe...ld/
