We are supposed to be suprised by hypocrisy from the Right? I just hope that she gets a nice chunk of whatever estate the old racist shit-head left and that the family gets treated to many years of the black side of the family attending funerals, weddings, and reunions.

Think we that ol' Strom was alone in his dilly-dallying? I recommend a trip to today's WashPost and a read of Colbert King's column, "A Story Much Older Than Strom".
What is morality?
What is the damage to truth when treated so badly for so long?

Atrios dahlink,
Just how is his different from, or worse than, the Northern Treatment (tm) afforded to Woods Niggers, er, Gypsies, er, Abenakis, say in Vermont?
Something about the size of we're too polite to speak about it.
Moral clarity appears to be very, very post-modern, and wonderfully transient.

...let freedom ring..
amerika stands for freedom - freedom from death squads - freedom to consume - freedom to die for a president's war - freedom to be racist - freedom to own guns - freedom to pollute - freedom to be imperialistic - freedom to promote cultist christian religion - freedom to be greedy - freedom to slave your life for corpo-government
No, Strom wasn't a "deadbeat." He was a rapist and a subjugator of those who are too weak to fight back. But this is in keeping with the wingnut phony bravado. They are only willing to tackle those who are crippled, destitute, or otherwise unable to retaliate.

BTW, Essie Mae's Mom bought the farm at 38.
When I told my friend Warren (also black) about this story when it first came to light his immediate reaction was "Will you stop calling that poor woman 'Essie Mae'!"
I said "But that's her name, Warren -- her real name."
"It is? No shit? Oh my Lord! That is SO Southern! That is SO Negro! And she's Strom Thurmond's kid on top of it!"
The kicker is that Essie Mae's husband was president of the Los Angeles Chapter of the NAACP.
Can we say Kapo boys and girls?

Parker: So that when a 22-year-old white man named Thurmond takes a 16-year-old black girl named Carrie Butler to his bed, well, things happen. Or they used to.
What is this, "Summer of '42" all of a sudden?
A white man in 1920s South Carolina has sex with his black maid, why, he's "taking her to bed." A black man in 1920s South Carolina simply looks at a white woman twice, well...

Meanwhile, Al Gore not calling Joe Lieberman squanders his moral legitimacy. Al Gore doesn't call a guy to tell him that he's endorsing someone else - bereft of moral character. Strom Thurmond openly agitates against rights for his child and her mother for half a century - it's "complicated".
Yes, "complicated" until you ask what would have happened to a 24 year old black man who was suspected of having sex, let's be honest, it was rape, with a 16 year old white girl. He, his family and several other black people would have been lynched.
Clueless Joe slammed gore in front of the DLC last summer I seem to reember. I wouldn't have just ignored the ingrate, I'd have flayed him.

Race mixing gives our enemies courage and saps our resolve. We must not let the heathen blood pollute True American Blood. Strom failed in taht regard, he was weak and was seduced. However, he was a patriotic southron son and we should admire his courage in defending freedom.

Hmmmm.....I wonder if the phrase "It's all just so complicated" is becoming the wingnut code for "Oh, shit! Caught out again!"
I seem to remember that dearest Glenn typed just such a phrase when the Plame scandal finally started to spread. Now we see Parker wheeling out the magic words. And I'll bet that when we find out that Cheney organized massive kickbacks through the secret energy policy, we'll hear this phrase once more: "It's all just so complicated!

what about the REAL VICTIMS here!!!
strom's LEGITIMATE PURE WHITE heirs?!?!! Mr. Bishop's daughter, Robyn Bishop, 25, an interior designer in Washington, said the worst part was the jokes on late-night television.
"It's been really hard this week," said Ms. Bishop, who once worked as a Senate page for Mr. Thurmond. "You have to turn on the TV and there are jokes about him and you're still grieving. I just hope this woman is coming out for the right reasons."

Shoot. Wish I had the time and energy and a stomach lined with iron - I'd dig through Kathleen's archive on the off chance that she took a slightly different position on sex between Man In Charge/Woman Employee back in the ol' glory days of the Republican sex police. Waaaaay back to the outrage over consensual sex between Bill Clinton and the 22-year old Monica Lewinsky. I'll go further out on this limb and guess that I'd find Kathleen scolding feminists and women in general for not condemning Clinton for getting physical with an underling. My, my - how times do change!

I still find it amazing any thinking human being can defend Thurmond on any level. An acquaintence of mine - who's basically a third-rate Sean Hannity in a local rag, writing movie reviews of all things - said when Strom kicked, "Well, you know, he supported MLK Day and hired black staffers."
Well, whoop-dee-fuckin'-do. The dirty son of a bitch also made his career on the suffering of the poor black man while playing on the fears of the poor white man. If he wasn't a racist, he was just another scumbag politician, and hell's too good for him.
And Andrew, the "real" daughter is probably just terribly upset that awful Negress is making life so difficult for her at the country club.

Parker "What today would be statutory rape was perfectly legal in 1925 when the black family maid gave birth to Thurmond's daughter. The cutoff for consent in those days was age 14."
If you no all 50 state capitals, and their corresponding Age of Consent laws...you might be a Thurmond.

Strom was "sowing wild oats," resulting in what one should be sure was an unwanted pregnancy; The Clenis was "morally depraved," resulting in stains on a dress. I understand it all so clearly now.

The story is already dying down which is what the Repubs count on. This may be the only time in history when the Repubs want people to zero in on race rather than the fact that he had sex w/ a 15 year old black teenager who was not his wife. I wonder what kind of Southern outrage would be present if it was found that he had an illegitimate child w/ a 16 year old white teenager (Probably a shotgun marriage or he would have been flayed alive)?
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Yeah, her daintiness is kind of riveting but she is dreaming if she is portraying Southern folks as some kind of prissily dainty deniers, gosh, what a bone-head.
There are huge issues involved, including trauma and rejection of women who were good enough to sleep with but not good enough to dine with, not to mention deep guilt and feelings of rejection of wives and sweethearts who came to know what their husbands were up to.
And the phrase “taking to his bed” sweetie, doesn’t even begin to address the issues of consent, coercion and anxiety that could have been operative.
Oh well, it’s prolly all too complicated for the little muffin.
