so is the identity of the Plame leaker an 'open secret' that those of us not fortunate enough to be in the Kool Kids' Klique(TM), will only find out about years from now?
Just wondering. I quit the high school newspaper after one year because all the cool kids got promoted to the cool positions and I was just expected to be a plain old reporter again.
I hated high school because of the Kool Kids Klique. Someone once told me life is like high school with money and cigarettes. I'm afraid they were right.

Russert was at party last Saturday nite, when Cheney knew of SH's capture, and Russert did not. He reported that he told Cheney of his dream of the capture of SH, and Cheney wished him Happy Holidays. With such chumminess, and in this case reproted as news, it's no wonder Russert never asks a follow up question.

Only Repervs are permitted to openly rape and pillage. It's just part of their nature, and so must be excused. Limbarf's drug abuse and exploitation of his "housekeeper" are also winked at. One wonders just what atrocities the GOPunks must commit before the whore media deigns to pay attention.

Considering how quickly every lie about Clinton spread you'd expect this kind of stuff to surface. I heard last night that Strom's rape was reported on, with names, in Slate months ago and was in the Times more than ten years ago. We can joke and be cynical about all of this, but the implications of how media manipulation by the conservatives will affect the country for years is staggering.
IMHO: most Americans are intellectually lazy and are happy to let an outlet like Faux do their thinking for them. How many people read newspapers anymore? We know Citizen No. 1 doesn't, and he's proud of his ignorance.
Most Americans are more interested in Jennifer Aniston's hair style than who outed Valerie Plame, or what the present administration was doing about the information it got before Sept. 11.
This may be a happy, jolly time for most people, but I'm not sanguine about our future. I think the swine are winning. And we're going to see dark, dark days before it gets better, if it ever does.
Why is it important for the whore media to report what's going on anyway? That's not going to "wake up" the American people. The American public is in a persistent vegetative state. And nothing is going to get their attention until it's too late. So just tell me when the end is near. I'll take off from work, take a hot shower, drink some cold Buds, clip my toenails and watch reruns of M*A*S*H all day.

Atrios, you, old Liberal-Hypocrite (LH), fraud, I understand you are banning people who are not LHs like you.
Being a democrat is not about being a LH or a Dean-O-Whore (DOW).
If you ban people, like me, then how are you different from KKK, O'Reilly, etc. Are you not the same? Ban speech. Ban alternative ideas. Etc.
I always thought the ultra-right are really like Saudis. I now know that ultra-left like yourself (Basically LHs and DOWs) are also like the Saudis.

The blame for what's happening now in this country rests squarely with the American people. We've done this to ourselves. Too many of our fellow citizens have absolutely no concept of responsible citizenship. And too many have allowed themselves to be brainwashed to the point of insanity. They've willingly become deranged for no reason. If the media does report, they'll be greeted by a feckless bored audience and then soon tormented to the gates of hell by the wingers. Like I've [said], we've done this to ourselves.

In my brief tenure as a newspaper journalist, I had an old editor who told me that it was impossible to be a good reporter and be friends with the powerful.
Now, it's considered OK to be invited to parties and private homes and if you're tough, you don't get those invitations and you don't get those interviews. In the competitive world of today's bright and shiny journalism, to not get the interview means you don't keep your job, hence, you get friendly and don't ask embarrassing questions.
My old editor's rule has gone the way of our cummunal sense of obligation to our country and our fellow citizens. We should hang our heads in shame.

Atrios, you really should think about taking serious action against trolls like America's Memory, AKB/Travis... Speech whose sole purpose is to disrupt other people's ability to discuss issues they are concerned with, is not something you should feel the need to support. Under another throwaway name, I've already pointed out how pinheads like this operate... they'll just keep coming back, again and again and again, with different "characters", until you eventually find a way to completely block their access. The pathetic person who trolled the James Randi Educational Foundation boards, and whom America's Memory began to model himself on, ended up committing felonies in his attempts to disrupt the boards there. AKB here has already shown how low he's prepared to go... and he'll go lower still if you let him. Don't just ban the fool, email his ISP and tell them of his disruption... I know you want to remain above their level, but anti-social people like we have here won't rest until they destroy everything. In real life, they are weak little shits, and the only power they have is that which your tolerance allows them to use. So really put the smack down on them, I say.
As for you AKB; We aren't going to be fooled by your stupid "free the banned" rant. We all know why they were banned. And we know why you bring that "issue" up... it has nothing to do with any commitment to political ideals, and everything to do with your thinking it's something which can drive a wedge between those who post here.
But it won't make the slightest difference to anyone here's thoughts or feelings. You'll just annoy a few people in the short term, and then once you inevitably lose out to Atrios, you'll be forgotten. You are no more important or convincing than a five year old boy who dresses up in his mother's clothes to get attention.

Sometimes these threads remind me of on-line multi player shooter games.
There is a great difference between a blogger protecting his blog from a concerted effort to disrupt conversation and the blanket banning of leftists from the airwaves, which belong to the public. It is the difference between responsible hosting and commercial interests dictating what is allowed to be heard and suppressing alternative viewpoints.
If someone banned me from his blog I'd figure it was his right and I'd move on.

David E.: "why every citizen must become a journalist."
It's for this reason I thank Whatever for blogs, Daily Howlers, and Al Gore for creating the internet we know today. You can find arguments, counter-arguments, and links to back them up all over the place. Imagine how impossible it would be for an average person without these things.
BTW, I wrote my own criticism to Krauthammer, but I wrote it directly to him, so it was probably never read. Two paragraphs:
You argue that Dean is suffering an onset of paranoia in reaction to a policy by Bush (what, the policy of suppressing evidence from 9/11?) because he finds "interesting" a theory that Bush had foreknowledge of the events of 9/11. (My dictionary defines interesting as "causing curiosity; holding the attention." Such a theory is arguably very "interesting," whether true or not.) But, as a presumably educated man, you should recognize the signifigance of what Dean was actually saying, specifically that suppression of evidence leads to such conspiracy theories, with the warning that it might serve Bush better to short-circuit such "grassy knoll" conspiracies by not covering up the truth. You do see the difference between holding such a conspiracy theory and knowing that such theories exist and are detrimental to the truth? Of course you do, you just aren't honest enough to care.
What would you call a syndrome which causes an otherwise apparently sane person to call people who have differing political views "deranged?" I'd call it Politically Partisan Clowning Hack Syndrome.

One of the great things about the Internet, as some of the excellent posters above have noted, is that it enables political and other discussions by intelligent citizens over long distances. The downside is that it gives anti-social misfits the opportunity to insult their betters with little fear of paying any price, except being insulted back, which I think they enjoy in kind of a sick way. As during the CB radio craze of 20 years ago, when misfits sat on their radios all day engaging in race baiting; we now have trolls who do not join the debate, but only throw out insults, hoping to attract attention to themselves. The best we can do is simply ignore these poor, insecure little people (of which AKB is the current exhibit A). They will go away once they find they are not getting any abuse back, and they will go elsewhere to practice their blantant masocism.

Backslider, Perle was just mouthing off as usual. Nothing ever came of the case last I heard. Slate actually had a "Libel Watch" series going for a while (it was pretty good). Here's a question: who do you think reporters fuck?
Well, they fuck each other, Hill Rats and staffers. Which is why they "know" Strom Thurmond had a nigra child, but can't write it. Because it's not a one way street. More than one reporter got into rehab, or got their kid into a swanky school because a friend lent a kind word.
These people all socialize with each other, drink with each other.
What in God's name do you think they do in Crawford all summer. The locals hate them, they're all ex-AF spooks. Why do you think Dana Milbank (he-Priest is she) comes back angry after Bush's month off?
Because you can bet his or his friend's marriage has taken a hit. Who's wife wants to pay her way to freaking central Texas in mid-summer, they all go to Colorado or Orlando.
These people are stuck down there for days, with nothing to do but play cards. You have to realize that they're screwing each other stupid. Which limits scoops and competativeness. Kinda hard to beat someone senseless after they sucked your dick the day before.

Steve, that's a very interesting point. Never thought of it that way before.
In addition to your point about reporters fucking each other (which I think is probably mostly true, from knowing several reporters and news people in general), this is what bothers me "These people all socialize with each other, drink with each other."
Because as has been pointed out above about Russert, these people are also socializing and drinking with the people in power. How can there possibly be an independent agressive press with this going on?
I know it's a dead horse at this point, but I'll beat it anyway.
Perhaps after the revolution, we'll have to implement studies of propoganda in schools (as pointed out in another thread by Bliekker) and how propoganda has warped history. As part of that, the press, and corporations will also have to be strictly regulated so that Politics, Special Interests, Corporations, and Media all are limited so that they can be kept honest.
There's an old saying "Locks keep honest people honest" That's all regulation really is, at least to me. Unfortunately the dishonest locksmiths are now in power.

Backslider I agree except in the case of the broadcast media. They are using public property, the air waves, and making huge amounts of money doing it. If they aren't forced to air a range of viewpoints all they do is spew corporate propaganda as they do now. Also, given the public interest in a full airing of issues and their power, there is a good case to be made for the same rules applying to cable media too.
It's no different from any other industry they'll always tend to do what is most profitable and will try to cover up anything that they would rather no one know. The difference is that what they do can make the difference between democracy and the worst kind of dictatorship. Look at Rwanda or the Balkans and the role the media played in promoting genocide there. It can happen here.

AKB, as someone who has been a progressive for several decades, and has read your posts over the last few months, I can safely say, you ARE NOT AN independent-thinking progressive!!!
I would bet you could not post intelligently about two 'progressive' issues, their backgrounds, the opposing views, or who the issues would affect and why. I have never read a post of yours about a real progressive issue, only those with many capitalized letters indicating names that you are calling us.

Friendly neighborhood WH 'ho here.
56k: You're embracing the Howler! Fantastic! More Howler, less MWO, as I always (perhaps tediously) say in here.
Some interesting points about our relationship to the powerful (and not the people. Now where have I heard that kind of phrase before?). And some truly weird points.
So Russert's at a party with senior administration officials. And those senior administration officials don't spill the beans on Saddam's capture. How is THAT an example of an 'open secret' or of a reporter not reporting something they know? Seems to me it's an example of social access having failed to yield a scoop.
Molly, Dana Milbank is a "he." And Sy isn't at a major daily because he loves being at a major weekly that lets him loose and bankrolls his investigative stuff.
Backslider, Perle lost that little confrontation. He threatened to sue and never followed through. In fact, he resigned the chairmanship of the Defense Policy Board.
Steve_Gilliard, as someone who has spent three Augusts in Waco/Crawford, I can assure you that the locals like us just fine. And there isn't much hanky-panky going on, and zero between administration folks and the 4th estate.

Now, the Mort Kondracke thing is amazing. (for those just tuning in, Mort, on Fox and Friends or whatever it's called, reported that he had had a conversation with Madeleine Albright in a television show 'green room,' and that she had asked whether he thought the Bush administration had Osama already and was delaying the announcement until just before the 2004 election. He didn't say she wasn't joking, but he did say she wasn't smiling. And Fox and Friends all agreed that all Democrats are unbalanced and can't be trusted with the presidency. Or something).
I don't know how anyone will ever trust Mort again. The 'green room' is a kind of neutral zone - the gym in West Side Story, perhaps - and it's supposed to be off the record. Mort has now essentially broken that unspoken, unwritten agreement. It'll be interesting to see the reaction from Mort's sources.
The funny thing about Albright's comments is that a joke to the effect of "Bush will pull Osama's head out of a bag at the GOP convention" has been a staple of Washington banter since before the 2002 midterm elections. And you'll notice that Mort didn't follow up with "are you kidding?" He just ran with it. That's called "a story too good to check."
