Thanks. I've been appalled that all day the news has led with the story of mudslides in California. A tragedy for the people involved no doubt, but nothing compared to the loss of more than 20,000 people. CNN Saturday night just led with Mad Cows (blame Canada!), mudslides, and mariachis. Sometimes it's just embarrassing to be an american.

A lousy magnitude 6.5 quake - just like the one we had in Paso Robles last week - kills more people in Iran than our invasion did in Iraq.

We have lots of Japanese and Iranians in California. Maybe they really enjoy earthquakes, but prefer not to die in them.

Humans are practical fatalists who continue to dwell in adobe edifices atop fault lines.

If it's any consolation, Chinese earthquakes kill more people.
