This is what passes for humor (and, to a lesser extent, the "antidote to PC speech") among the wingnuts. Savage/Weiner tells a gay caller that he "should only get AIDS and die" or advocates smallpox-laced blankets for Iranian earthquake victims; Rush tells an African-American caller to "take the bone out of your nose," etc. etc. ad nauseum, and the MBFs out there giggle and elbow each other in the ribs. Then they act surprised when anyone is offended, saying it was all "just a joke."
The joke is that these idiots get hired and listened to in the first place. Unfortunately, the joke isn't especially funny.

Keep him on. Give Charles Johnson a nationally syndicated TV show, for God's sake. Give Glenn Reynolds a New York Times column.
You want this kind of hate out in the open, not skulking in the shadows.
You have no idea how many people I've turned to the left by sending them to Little Green Footballs.
You have no idea just how great it is to have somebody like Michael Savage out there in the open when you hear something like "well, didn't the Palestinians dance in the street on 9/11."

GOP is the party of hate.
It remains to be seen if they Can be voted out of power.
They will attempt to smear and block any legitimate Democrat candidate. Dean the outsider will certainly get slimed. Clark likely will too- because they don't like friends of the Clinton family, either.
Any of the Senatorial sham candidates are likely their opponents of choice, since they will surrender the election in the end as the corporate masters dictate.
The GOP is the party of an economy that runs off of Endless War. They seek to set up a feudal American society. For example, take their Wecovery that only benefits the upper echelon of the mercantile class.
Savage may have been canned from MSNBC, but he has a bright future after the 2004 reSelection.

It isn't "advocating genocide," so it's OT, but this reported attitude makes me think of the "banned" international flights of late. Reports are that other countries are questioning U.S. intelligence data. Seems one flight was banned because a small child on the flight manifest had the same last name as a suspected terrorist.

Last night Savage was talking about Mars and how it's lifeless now, but water may have made it livable 16,000 years ago.
He joked that probably Liberals destroyed everything there, then went on to talk about how "unchecked Liberalism" destroyed the Soviet Union, Germany under the Nazis (they were "National Socialists," you know), and so on.
It's Liberalism that destroys everything, so we have to stop it if we want life to go on.

He would listen on his walkman, and we always knew when the show came on because he would get agitated and start muttering to himself. Thank God the local Cumulus station took him off, even they said that his comments were beyond the pale. Now that I no longer work there I am relieved, cause I bet that he can get the show in the evening during the wintertime from some distant locale.

Ode to a Savage Gift
The icy night is beautiful
But my fingers cannot move
And my mother is dead
And the place where my mother sat is gone
I will trace the pattern of God's face in the sky
I will dream of my mother, and the peace of her perfect love
A man gives me a blanket against the cold
I huddle in the night
And then came the sores
And then I became a house that life abandoned
I am gone.
Love is so light--why do some not carry it everywhere?

People like Savage are useful because they let you say "you think those Palestinians are the only ones who dance in the street at other peoples' suffering. Take a look at Michael Savage."
I suppose you could add "what's more, while it's entirely understandable that somebody living in a refugee camp might be angry, I can't say the same thing about a rich American in suburbia."
So I guess "understandable" is a better word than "justified."

I'm fully prepared to believe that snopes.com can be wrong but they say that it wasn't faked.
Anyway, it doesn't matter. A lot of Americans believe that people in the Middle East celebrate the suffering of Americans and Israelis and the best way to counter this is to demonstrate that Americans do the same thing.
As for censoring Savage, it's a bit frightening but I don't think he's that much outside the pale. I live in a "blue state" and I know plenty of white, middle-class Americans who will come out with things like "who cares if people in Iraq get killed."

Ever heard of Roy Masters? He is part owner of TRN (Talk Radio Network). The guy who sued the site 'Take Back The Media'. Masters is an EXTREMELY conservative religious leader. I was a student of his back in the 80's. His views are much more severe than Savage's. He used to publish a magazine called the 'Iconoclast' which later became 'New Dimensions' and had quite a bit of media coverage. 'World Net Daily' is published on property near Grants Pass Oregon which used to be Roy's religous retreat called Tall Timber Ranch. Joseph Farah and David Kupelian from WND are both long time disciples of Masters. The links go on and on. It scared the hell out of me when I started seeing people from WND appearing on mainstream news shows and being taken seriously. Re: Palestinians dancing in the streets: The week after 9/11 the American ambassador in Israel got an inch thick stack of faxes from Palestinians in the territories expressing their condolences. That didn't make as good a sound bite as the ones dancing and carrying on like fools.
I don't have any patience for such behavior. I remember well during the first Gulf war how men gathered at a sports bar near Grand Central Station to cheer the war videos on TV. I walked past the doorway in the winter dark and heard the shouting, looked in, saw what they were cheering, and hurried on my way. Most of my New York friends were home in front of the TV, catatonic with grief and horror. But there were many others, not my friends, hallooing at the TV as if watching a football game. I still don't believe such people deserved the Trade Towers catastrophe as retribution, even if you could prove that a man dead on the 102nd floor had been in that sports bar howling a decade earlier.
Most humans are petty and subject to mob madness. It's up to our leaders to keep this baying in check, and direct us towards higher instincts.

Same with the Palestinian footage on 9/11: a close-up lens distorting the truth for the benefit of 'good pictures'.

I just can't understand Savage. He used to be normal. He was a caring understanding person. He was even friends with NAMBLA-founder and beat-poet Allen Ginsberg. My own (tin foil hat) theory is that as an ethnobotanist, he consumed some substance one time too many that killed a few particular nerve cells in his brain, causing some drastic personality shift toward hatred. The guy is truly bizarre and I pity him more than most uber-rightists.

SAVAGE DRIVERS
In the SF bay area you'll occasionally see a vehicle (most likely a pickup) with a bumper sticker for SAVAGE's radio station. It likely has other angry bumper stickers and numerous American flags.
If you see one, steer clear. Every one of these guys (and they are ALL male) I've seen is as angry as a hornet after its nest has been sprayed. Cutting people off, flipping the bird, tailgating, weaving, speeding ... all standard for these turkeys.

You may be pleased to know that his book "Savage Nation" is now selling at Barnes and Noble for the amazing price of 5.99. There it sits among the other losers: the how to cast your cat's horoscope, the feng shui your garage book, the jerky cookbook, and the Fodor's Guide to Greenland. It was on the best seller's list just a few months ago and for it to fall that fast into the land of unwanted books has got to be a record.

Is there anything that can get you kicked off talk radio?
Attacking Christianity would do it, as would attacking capitalism. The two national religions.
Maybe also not attacking ethnic minorities, gays and lesbians or women enough. Sort of like being a luke-warm hater?
BTW, did Savage actually say this thing?

Normally I'm for free speech.
Savage's audio pollution is not covered by the 1st amendment. It is hate-mongering speech designed incite violence.
This man is dangerous, not just to "liberals", but to the constitutional government of the United States of America. Why can't more people see this? He ought to be arrested and tried before a jury of his "peers" (a scary thought, such a jury).
To bring up one of the most shameful acts of our history, the smallpox biowarfare we waged against the Native Americans, and propose that we revisit that tragedy, not out of desperation but out of hate, such a suggestion is pathologically criminal. Psychopathic personality disorder may fit Savage, who seems totally bereft of feelings for his own species. With no emotional connection to humans, it's easy to suggest all horrors of treatment, as easy as squashing a bug--or murdering six million Jews.

Oh, what could get someone kicked off radio?
Ask Peter Werbe. He's had to fight for his show, and I've read that it's an very popular show (sorry, no numbers). But his problem is that he doesn't hate enough. He preaches only quasi-hatred. Oh, and he's a liberal.
Personally I don't like any of these radio talkers, liberal or not. The standard format seems to be,
A. Host states an opinion, usually with overwrought language and emotion. Opinions are normally oversimplifications of complex issues, i.e., corporations are evil.
B. Host takes filtered calls and does one of two things:
1. Lets caller ramble because he agrees with caller's opinion. Praises caller and pats self on back.
2. Attacks caller and begins to argue. If caller is an idiot, he argues for some time. If caller starts to win argument, then host hangs up on him and gets in the last word.
3. Goto 1.
How is this helpful for public discourse? A show lasts an hour, yet if the hos

Low ratings. And that's the only thing.
Mike Malloy was kicked off Chicago talk radio despite having the highest ratings in his time period. His sin was being an unapologetic liberal.

"These people are the American echo of those Palestinians dancing in the street on 9/11. --SWR"
SWR, hope you see this, because
THERE WERE NO PALESTINIANS DANCING IN THE STREETS ON 911.
That footage has been debunked as old footage, dug up by the tv networks (with a little help from their friends in the WH), and shown incessantly. Classic psychout warfare.
The same is true about the so-called 'anti-American rallies' that we saw on network tv. These were generally funerals, and the 'anti-Americanism' seen on tvs all over America was actually Jordanians and others PRAYING.
Shouting Allahu Akbar to the sky is not an anti-American act. But it was sold to non-Muslim Americans as that, shamelessly. Faux News ran this stuff incessantly, and Murdock stations everywhere ran it.

He was even friends with NAMBLA founder...
Would that be the North American Man Boy Love Association? or the North American Marlon Brando Lookalike Association? just wondering. Personally I don't think he was ever normal, he just hid his hatred better. The rise of the right wing hate culture has just given him a venue to let it all hang out.

Isn't there a character in "It Can't Happen Here," a Jew who goes out of his way to ram a silly, phoney Gentility down the throats of goy neighbors who son't buy it for a minute but who humor him anyway?
Michael Wiener, an "appeasement Jew" who tried to capitalize on hatred of his own kind, is now linking the American Holocaust (against the Natives, as opposed to Slavery) to treasonously self-destructive spite. Leaving aside the strangeness of a cryptoNazi actually acknowledging that Insufficiently Patriotic Conspiracy Theory (we thought native population increased after Columbus, leaving us to the present state of being in the grip of a white-hating aboriginal majority!) this just cements his loathesome reputation.
Why does Whining Wiener hate America...and Jews...and innocent Iranians...and Native Americans for that matter?
And let no one say Atrios is giving Wiener publicity. Hate-fountains like Cal Thomas, Hal...that Hal guy advertising on Jazeerah.info, and Whining

In the months and weeks leading up to the Rwanda genocide, hate radio was a major impetus. It became a daily drumbeat for killing Tutsis. You can look it up in Gurevitch's (sp?) book and elsewhere. I believe there was a recent war-crimes conviction against these "talk-show hosts" as well.
An excited/exciting voice speaking to fear and anger can be an incredibly powerful seductress. It can make millions, conquer Europe, etc.

According to snopes.com the Palestinians dancing in the street story is true.
I'm almost sorry I brought it up. I wasn't trying to smear the Palestinians even more than they have been, just trying to point out that Americans regularly engage in behavior that's every bit as boneheaded as people in the Middle-East are accused of doing.

Of course, I'm sure that the cameramen went looking for Palestinians who were celebrating in the streets. I could very easily take my camcorder out into the streets of Manhattan right now and come up with a nice series of soundbites of white Americans laughing about civilians being killed in Iraq or about Iranians dying in the earthquake.
My point was merely that there are haters everywhere and if you look for it, you'll find it. To say that no Palestinians celbrated on 9/11 would be dehumanizing almost as much as taking an out of context celebration and using it to represent the majority.

Arial Sharon is quite possibly waiting for results of the election, one reason it's so important to beat Bush.
I'm sure if Bush wins, "transfer" is one option on the table. If it's Dean or Clark, then Sharon will back off because either is too much of an unknown quanitity.
I think it's the same with any future invasions in the Middle East. I doubt Bush will act against Syria or Iran before 2004, but all bets are off if he wins.

Someone should point out the irony of PotKettleBlack's ignorance regarding modified rightist quotes not being the same thing morally as their original sentiments. But we're not responding to trolls in the Bush-Ejecting Year.
Another thing we're not doing is fiddling with shiny metal headgear: "Thus, when the first attack occurred in New York just before 9:00 A.M., Palestine time would have been 3:00 P.M., and the area would still have been bathed in plenty of mid-afternoon sunlight.)"
So...in other words...while Americans were ignorant of the very first attacks, (see Bush's imaginary look at a nonexistant news visual before entering the classroom,) an illiterate Palestinian mob was better informed. But then of course all wogs were in on it...
