I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

I've said it before...just when I think this administration can't go any lower they manage to find another sub-basement.

Who knows what kind of crazy ideas those scheming deaf people will get if they watch "Judge Wapner's Animal Court."

Gravatar"Ruh-roh, Shaggy" -- Scooby in response to the news.

GravatarYah, another double post, and I still have no idea why or how.

GravatarRhhholy Rhhhit!

Gravatarlet's see-
Bewitched- deals with witchcraft and the occult
I Dream of Jeannie- genies, common in Middle Eastern lore, obviously a terrorist meant to steal secrets from our fighting forces
Law & Order- from *this* administration, yeah, right
The Simpsons- ran fake Faux News crawl
Malcolm in the Middle- working mom, oldest son ditches military school, goes to Alaska and doesn't drill for oil
Scooby Doo-Scooby Snax anyone?.

GravatarRhhholy Rhhhit! RhhotherRuckers!!

GravatarDeaf people carry the mark of Cain! Beware of their kind, they got the Devil's work going on in them because of that book reading they have to do when "Sanford and Son" comes on.

Old Man McGurney in McKinleyville says they cast a hex on you when they look and wiggle their nose twice. When you see a deaf person, you have to turn three times in a circle and swing a hemp rope around your head to keep the demons away.

I hear that calico cats are particular to the deaf.

Gravataralso on the Simpsons, shows Mr Burns as evil and nuclear power as unsafe

GravatarI think it is just an attempt to establish an precedent for censorhip.

the busheviki must go

GravatarOh fuck it! I'm moving to the UK!

You know what else?

It's against the ADA!

That Dubya's father signed!

HA

(pissed off deaf person)

GravatarWhat's amazing to me is they way you all can construct a consensual reality around such an obvious piece of bullshit and everybody just goes along because it fits the agenda. That editorial makes factual statements about shows being cancelled for various political and religious reasons and then admits in one paragraph near the middle that the real reason is that these shows aren't educational and then goes back to its bizarre fantasy of religious persecution without taking a breath. I love "I Dream of Jeanie". I used to dream of Barbara Eden in that houri outfit on a regular basis. But sorry, it's not educational. Why don't you people get a grip?

GravatarWhy are the new rules a secret? Well, that's a secret too!

GravatarWhat kind of a bubble do these people live in ---- anyway!

GravatarBTW,
DOE is the abbreviation for "Department of Energy" and they tend to use "ED" for the Department of Education.

GravatarRight on Dave! How dare those undeserving ear cripples get it into their not-fully-functional heads that they deserve to enjoy any entertainment on our dime? Huh! The nerve! Next thing you know they're going to want to get married and stuff like real people, Uhhhgh, it just makes me sick!!! Round them up and put them all in one deaf-approved zone and make prisoners write things down for them, that'll take care of it.

GravatarThat's right, when I get married I'm going to do it silently, just by turning off my hearing aid that is.

GravatarLook, either caption all the shows or exempt the deaf from all federal taxes.

There, that was easy, wasn't it?

GravatarThe National Association of the Deaf says the government used to caption these shows but abruptly changed course, deciding that the shows don't fit the required definition of "educational, news or informational" programming.

Next, they're going to tell us that the shows that remain closed-captioned fit into this group?

I guess Survivor's out, right?

GravatarOT: Looks like our Bill Frist reviews are getting some attention!!

http://www.nashscene.com/cgi-bin...f_'Good_People' And on Andrew Sullivan!

GravatarI love "I Dream of Jeanie". I used to dream of Barbara Eden in that houri outfit on a regular basis. But sorry, it's not educational.

And Cory the Clown is?

GravatarI wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that this is happening because these shows "demonstrate an anti-Christian bias," or "show Christianity in a bad light," or some other such hooey.

They're trying to "Christianize" every other aspect of the republic, why not this one?

It's the only logical (hehe, logical) connection that I can see.

GravatarIt's all budget cuts. Transcribers get 100k a year if they're skilled. We all know that 100k would be better used to line the everlasting birdcages of Enron executive staff.

GravatarHere's a link to the Approved/Disapproved List of programs.

http://tinyurl.com/3hzpd

There are a ton of sports programs on the disapproved list!

GravatarIsn't closed-captioning provided by other sponsors, like major corporations, too?

Thinking about the sports programs, I could do without listening to some of the morons that call the play-by-plays, but that's just me.

GravatarRhoobies!

(º)(º)

GravatarThat editorial makes factual statements about shows being cancelled for various political and religious reasons and then admits in one paragraph near the middle that the real reason is that these shows aren't educational...

I don't think you were reading the same article as I was. The one I read made humorous (tongue-in-cheek) guesses about why these shows suddenly stopped qualifying, not factual statements about various political and religious reasons for cancellation. It was specifically mocking the fact that the new criteria (and, even, the people who are using them) are undisclosed, and that many of the decisions don't seem to make any sense.

Why doesn't Catherine Crier meet the standard of "educational, news or informational"? How about Dominick Dunne? What about programming of cultural importance, such as The Simpsons? Is a program spreading cultural information not "informational" by this standard? And why does a secret panel get to decide using secret rules for all deaf people what is or isn't "educational, news or informational"?

Gravatarnow thats what I call "compassionate conservatism"!!!

GravatarThe Firesign Theatre line is:

Shoes for Industry. Shoes for the Dead. Shoes for Industry!

In my late teens, and early twenties my fiance, a friend and I used to clear out the local Dunkin Donuts reciting Firesign Theatre while drinking the really yucky (by today's standard) coffee. We were milk and sugar people back then. I drink mine black now. But we'd yell: More Sugar! Another FST reference. My sister, five years younger than me credits her psychological and moral demise to being exposed to my music and to Firesign Theatre. This makes me smile.

Gravataroooh Cisco!

I know why. This administration has a real problem with non-Anglos. What's next? Esteem for Duncan Reynaldo? Leo Carrillo? My God those are Messicans! Zorro! They're going to take back Tejas! And the deaf will help them, all unknowing because they were able to read the secret messages contained in the stories.....

Gravatar"Holy Mudhead, Mackerel"

"Who am us, anyway?"

GravatarPico and Alvarado ... on point...

"We been shootin' reds and yellows all day, Man!'

GravatarI love "I Dream of Jeanie". I used to dream of Barbara Eden in that houri outfit on a regular basis. But sorry, it's not educational. Why don't you people get a grip?

Thou art correct, Brother. Naught should distract thee from thy chores and thy contemplation of the Lord. Entertainments are for the wicked. Especially those involving a nubile blonde in harlot's garb... her dewy eyes shining with adoration at her master... snowy bosum heaving....

Yet one more public service this adMinisteration sees fit to curtail in its endless quest to spend money only on its friends and its pipe dreams.

GravatarIt's absolutely outrageous that the govt is picking and choosing at all. Every single program should be captioned for the deaf and hard of hearing.

GravatarConservatives know what is best for everyone, especially gays, poor folk, and handicaps. It's not like these people contribute to society like good Christians do when they crusade against the Holocaust of the Unborn or to protect the Sanctity of Marriage. If they did not screen these filthy TV shows, the liberal media would try to indoctrinate all the deaf folks with trash like Darwinism or the Homosexual Agenda. They should be thankful that patriotic conservatives are brave enough to stand up for traditional values and try to save this country from the heathens. Ingrates!

GravatarCream my pooper, Scooby!

GravatarFilkertom, you misspelled "bosun".

GravatarAs much as I think this administration sucks the balls off a dead bear, I don't think this particular ruling is unreasonable -- just the way in which it's being done. I've posted about it on my blog (click below) -- feel free to tell me I'm full of sh*t.

GravatarOpus, you're full of sh*t.

GravatarTo my respondents: I didn't defend the action, all I did was point out the bizarre nature of the fantasies being promulgated in the article and on this page. If the article and all this discussion were really tongue-in-cheek, all I can say is that I didn't get it. There were parts that could be read that way, but it contains quotes from people saying that kind of stuff that sounds serious. How many of you who spouted off about the vast right wing religious conspiracy were just joking and how many are genuinely a couple of forks short of a full place setting?

Here's what I would say if I were to defend the action: http://docrampage.blogspot.com/ 2...679345332050201

GravatarA lot of noisy bars use closed-captioning for those who want to follow the commentary. Without closed-captioning, here's what we can expect:

"Shaddap, I'm trying to watch the game!"

"Who you tellin' to shaddap?"

"You!"

"Oh, yeah?"

"Yeah!"

*POW* *BLAM!* *KAPOWIE!* *OOOF!*

Obviously, the Bush administration is objectively pro-bar-brawl.

GravatarThe Firesign Theater posts made me hungry for more, so I put on "I Think We're All Bozos on This Bus."

Includes this little ditty:
"We're goin' back to the Shadows again !
Out where an Indian's your friend!
Where the vegetables are green,
And you can pee right into the stream!
(And that's important!)
We're back from the Shadows again!"

GravatarWait a minute, how is "Clifford the Big Red Dog" (which is on the approved list) educational or informative, but "Courage the Cowardly Dog" not so?

I'd really like to see those supposed criteria they use.

But I'm thinking that these so-called "criteria" are nothing more than, "I like this show and I don't like the other one."

In other words, they're unavailable because they're non-existent.

GravatarTena,

Thanks for posting this. I'd sent mentions and links to Atrios before and even finally cut and pasted stuff into comments.

This story has more detail than I'd been able to find before. I originally heard about this on the PaxTV web site.

Pax has a show about a deaf woman FBI agent which is very, very good, btw. It's on Sunday nights at 8 CsT.

GravatarIf I jumped your case in error Dave, I apologise, but I'm a Deaniac, unresigned to the "anger is bad Mkay?" argument. That it's too expensive to close caption any but "approved programming" just smacks of being too damned cheap. We have money enough, our rulers have not the heart. It's a hot button thing for me for the rich to begrudge the poor; for the healthy to skimp on those who need. My sense of humor gets self-rightous and I am not ready to chill out on the frozen out. I will not back off the sloughed off. I will do something about this odd possesion by the spirit of Jesse Jackson's speech writer, just let me check my notes....

Gravatarsorry about that post, was trying to comment on the Clifford v Cowardly comment and Haloscan went flaky on me :P

the reason Clifford is ok is that it's produced by Scholastic Books, qed it's scholarly

GravatarYea Donna and Rufus! and all hail lenin and marx!

GravatarMy sister, five years younger than me credits her psychological and moral demise to being exposed to my music and to Firesign Theatre. This makes me smile.
Donna

OT, but Donna, you sound hella fun. :-D It's your fault that I hadda go drag out the "Dear Friends" CD I dug up at a bargain-bin store years ago.
...Which makes me think, not OT, that I've never even CONSIDERED what I'd miss if I lost the ability to hear. It's too much to contemplate, actually.
Often I'll choose to watch a specific program on the bedroom TV, which for some reason has a built-in captioning feature, so I can know what's going on while avoiding those sudden loud bursts of sound from car chases, explosions, and commercials.

Gravatarmake that Lennon and Marx......

Gravatar(Weird. How'd Haloscan wind up doubling back on itself and reprinting posts from the beginning of the thread?)
::hands on hips:: TENA, DID YOU BREAK HALOSCAN? Atrios is never gonna let you watch the kids again... :-p

GravatarI have an acquaintance from Texas, X-tian fundie, holly-roller Baptist freak, who told me once they "boycotted" The Simpsons. Nobody in their home was allowed to watch the show.

She claimed that the show promoted dysfunctional families and "unchristian values." She also told me of many other silly, inoffensive shows they considered "unchristian" (like the Teletubbies, Warner Brother's cartoons, etc.)

I'm baffled to this day.

GravatarThe last word on the subject and the REAL interpretation is provided at Cosmic Iguana:
http://www.cosmiciguana.com/archives/001636.html

GravatarOooh! The Simpson's boycott! What a change has occurred. When it first became popular, Bart was seen as a shockingly disprespectful role model for children. Remember the ubiqitous, "Eat my shorts!" How in the hell a spiky headed little cartoon kid equates to a role model I'm not sure, but I'm sure the decision involved "good Christians" in one of their various self-appointed forms.

::hands on hips:: TENA, DID YOU BREAK HALOSCAN? Atrios is never gonna let you watch the kids again... :-p
Silleigh

nope, it was me, wound up copying and pasting the entire beginning of the thread somehow.

GravatarAbout The Simpsons: Inside The Actors Studio featured the entire cast (voice talent of course) several eps ago. Harry Shearer was asked what he thought about the somewhat recent book, The Gospel According To The Simpsons and he commented that in all these years, The Simpsons had gone from being excoriated to embraced by the Christian establishment, showing that if a show hangs around long enough, anything can happen. He said that in some spot of the world, there's a congregation of Christians who show up to services dressed as Ned Flanders. He may have been referring to this: (Fox News link) "A British Christian group last month hosted a Ned Flanders Day, complete with look-alike contest and a performance by the satirical band Ned Zeppelin. And on this side of the Atlantic, a Simpsons study guide that ties certain episodes to lessons of faith was released in August."

GravatarThis is a joke, right?

Gravatarnope, it was me, wound up copying and pasting the entire beginning of the thread somehow.
Teeena no giv yu turkee!

GravatarTo Rufus, Slillegh and Nick Danger...Compadres!!! So good to find you. I knew I'd find a few of you were about. I'm not lying about my sister saying that her demise was me exposing her to Firesign Theatre. We are among the few and the vocal.

"Isn't that bridge built yet?

Gravatarclose the bold tag Geez after all these years I hate how HTML is done on the Internet.

GravatarDonna, dang, you took my favorite!
Always felt like I went to More Science High.
George Carlin's website has alot of the FS titles on cd now.
Also, if you remember a very funny guy from the 60's, Brute Force, he has resurfaced and is still writing beautiful, lyrical, transcendantly goofy songs. He is at http://www.brutesforce.com
I am working on a piece about how his career was destroyed by censorship and a blacklist so strong that even George Harrison was unable to break through and get his stuff distributed. I'll post it's location if I ever get it finished

GravatarThe connection is that they all run contrary to the established conservative ideology.
As was listed above, Bewitched is satanic. I dream of genie is also pagan, and rests on middle eastern mythology. Law and Order has a team of prosecutors who don't support using the death penalty FOR EVERYTHING.
The Simpsons runs contrary to the christian teaching of a family subordinate to a strong father figure who leads the family in prayer. Malcom in the Middle has disobedient children, and another wuss of a father, not the strong AshKKKroft father type that conservatives claim is essential if we want to get this country back on a godly path. And Scooby Doo was a drug and pot smoking insider joke during the early 70's when it was popular.

These all run contrary to the conservative ideology.

MYOB'
.

Gravatar
The
Law & Order watched in insomnia was the most ravingly Zionist crap: they'd have a drug-tainted Schwartze brat defendant and in the other corner, a poor old Holocaust survivor (literally), and call it "drama" or "realism" or "gritty". Then again the way Friends has no black people in New York, not even in the background, or the way Seinfeld despised wogs (Soup Nazi, the Paki restauranteur, the West Asian parking lot pimp-etcai): are they completely incapable of imagining a West Asian character who is not degrees worse than the usual nice white nominally Jewish neurotics?! How can every god-damn show and movie be about this one tiny minority in a tiny clique in one city, and yet people dismiss out of hand the idea that a group of more or less Jews have undue influence over the media? But it's not like it matters: could be complaining about every show being about a tiny clique of neurotic Montreallier separatistas, or properly collated Swiss Genevans, or a tiny clique of Texans like KOTH only on ten shows, or starving kids in Brasilia, or shit and dog and car obsessed Frankfurters. Probably better this way.
"Kovacs"? "Osterman"? "Dreiberg"? "Veidt"? You see? You SEE? Never mind...must have a lie down before some crazy waiting for brownshirts to march over the hill in uniform says that just because a regular proportion of Hollywood output isn't regulated by Politically Correct Scenario Distributors doesn't have anything to do with nepotism, which no Jew has ever thought of practising, and you know what neither do Chinese or Italians either, or anyone...

GravatarDonna, Slillegh, Nick Danger & IsraelHand,
Nice meeting you all, too.

It occurs to me that this would make a great banner for SOMEBODY'S political convention:
"WE'RE ALL BOZOS ON THIS BUS!"
And a bumper sticker: "I MUST GO WHERE THE BOZOS GO."

Here's the URL for The Official Firesign Theater Website:
http://www.firesigntheatre.com/f...com/ funway.html

GravatarBoy, it's a good thing that those deaf people are too deaf to vote.

GravatarI'm guilty in this case of going right to the bottom of the comments without reading them all. But I'm hearing impaired and DEPEND on closed captioning. First of all, hearing impaired people are neither stupid nor unemployed (at least not during the growth years of the Clinton administration). How many of you understand that hearing-impaired people are employed TAXPAYERS and not retards.

GravatarBoy they'd better never try to censor the Talking Books that get sent to the blind. They'd get trouble.

Doesn't this have the look of a pilot program? They'll apply it to all of us before they're done.

Gravataris there ANYTHING george fuckhead HASN'T twisted for his masters???
asswipe prick. NO SIMPSONS FOR THE DEAF.
bastard.

Gravatari actually watch the captioning, as my hearing isn't what it used to be (too many loud rock concerts as a kid). and some of the shows that are on the 'proscribed' list are indeed captioned. the thing is that the captioning is paid for by sponsors, production companies, or some other private source. don't get me wrong, what the gov't is doing is entirely wrong. but i find very few shows that aren't captioned.

GravatarHow many of you understand that hearing-impaired people are employed TAXPAYERS and not retards.

aw-I hope you're not referring to my snarky voter comment. I find this to be a very politically stupid move during an election year. I don't know how many people in this country depend on CC, (perhaps you could shed some light). but I imagine the number ranges in the several, if not tens of millions. In addition to those who have been deaf all or most of their lives, we have a growing elderly population who are, no doubt growing more dependent on CC. And we know that the elderly turn out to vote.

I'm a bit sensitive to this myself,I lost all of my hearing in one ear due to childhood meningitis. So I'm about one good ear infection or a couple of decades of aging away from needing to use closed captioning myself.

GravatarDonna, Slillegh, Nick Danger, IsraelHand, Rufus, thanks for helping me make my dirty.. DUTY clean CLEAR!

Eat fascist death, flaming media pigs!

Gravatarwhat is that phrase I heard a while ago....
When they came for the communists I did nothing because I was not a communist.
When they came for the Jews I did nothing because I wasn't Jewish.
When they came for me no one did anything because there was no one left to stop them...

I think it would be more fair if the govt just decided to cancel all the programming instead of de-funding the captioning. That would be more in line with the ADA (according to my limited understanding of it) and would be much more honest and transparent.

There is something insidious about this....are those jackboots I hear down the hall?

GravatarSome fellow FireHeads! We are few, but fervant eh? I've a favorite line I use to ferret out other FireHeads-
I'll claim "You're no fun..." and if they answer "I fell right over", then it's a party. I've honked off christians quoting "He knew not his hole from an ass on the ground" from the "Holy Book of Holes". I stole their "Sound FX Greatest Hits" concept for a promo for our little radio theatre group-now sadly defunct.(I've had the pleasure of working with Phil Proctor once, and David Ossman several times, thanks to the National Audio Theater Festival workhops).

In other words, FireSign's been essential to my life-style choice and has served me well

It's good to be among dear friends...

GravatarGee what do these shows:

Bewitched

I Dream of Jeannie

Law & Order

Power Rangers

Sanford and Son

Judge Wapner's Animal Court

The Loretta Young Show

have in common? What is the criterion for deciding "No govt.-funded captioning for you!"?

You go investigate the owners of those shows and the companies who syndicate them. I'll bet you ten American dollars to one Krispy Kreme doughnut, right now, that the one thing the non-captioned shows have in common is these individuals and firms either donated too much money to a Democratic candidate, or didn't donate enough money to a Republican candidate.

GravatarFOX New Channel is on the approved list.

So I guess the approved shows don't really *have* to be newsworthy or educational or informational.

Just entertaining.
