I remain baffled that this article hasn't gotten more play, particularly since Helen Thomas's grilling of Scott McClellan at yesterday morning's White House press briefing made it abundantly clear that the mainstream press is chasing the story. Here's the money quote:
...For example, what if, rather than being grounded for missing a physical as the terse report we have all seen suggests, George W. was grounded for some other reason, such as an arrest? It would not be unusual for a guardsman to be suspended for being arrested, especially for certain types of offenses. It would also not be terribly unusual for the son of a prominent politician who was grounded verbally for being arrested to be afforded the courtesy of having his record reflect only the somewhat less embarrassing fact that he failed to take a required physical examination.
What if, then, George H. W. Bush used his political clout to convince Dubya's judge that instead of jail time, Little George should be enrolled in a community service program? What if Bush I, seeing the conflict this substantial time commitment would have on Dubya's ability to complete his Guard requirements, saw to it that in addition to being absolved of criminal wrongdoing, Bush II's service would count toward his TANG commitment as well?
And, just for fun, let's imagine what would happen to our picture of this flawed but fundamentally honest man if we found out that Bush had sent his campaign people to Texas in the late 90's to destroy any records that might prove this story to be accurate. How do you think that would go over with the Wyoming, Colorado and Montana families who comprise Dubya's most ardent base?
Soon, and very soon, we'll be able to stop wondering, because the foregoing description isn't hypothetical at all. It's exactly what happened. Three different sources told James Hatfield in 1998 that Dubya was arrested for cocaine possession in 1972. Dubya's 1972 stint at the community service organization, Project PULL, is still advertised in the President's bio on the State Department website in what I can only imagine is a gross oversight by the White House Truth Department.
The reason Bush got retirement credit and pay for service in 1972 despite the fact that his superiors on the military bases to which he was assigned never saw him is because he was not training at an Air Force Base but spending time in a community center with underprivileged children, working off his coke arrrest. And the story of Bill Beckett, who saw the trashed remains of Lieutenant Bush's service record in a military trash can, confirms the purge was the work of Bush staffers, working with the complicity of high-ranking Guard officers.

(AP) Authorities today are apologizing for what they are calling a "regrettable tragedy" in the slaying of Cupid, the Love Cherub. A frantic 911 caller described the scene as a "pinkish-hued naked boy laying in a bloody heap" outside the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. Unidentified agents of President Bush's security team shot the impish lad with a barrage of gunfire, then stopped and looked at each other with the International Symbol for "My Bad".
It was commonly known in the Beltway that Cupid had in fact been attempting to kill the President, but still...it was Cupid, man. That ain't right.
So a new way of testing for alcohol consumption has been developed, and I think it'll lead to some stupid new rules and unnecessary litigation.

I ran across this wild story yesterday that I had never heard the first thing about...I'm almost afraid to post it, but I'd like to know if there's anything to it. Here are a few excerpts:
"Woman who filed lawsuit found dead
The Fort Bend County woman would filed a December, 2002 lawsuit against former governor and current sitting President George W. Bush was found dead in September in her Lake Village home in Sienna Plantation. Margie D. Schoedinger of Missouri City, Texas, filed a lawsuit against George W. Bush in Fort Bend County Court. In her suit she alleged, "race based harassment and individual sex crimes committed against her and her husband." The suit lists numerous offenses and asks for actual damages, punitive damages and judgments against George W. Bush.
In the end, this investigation yielded the following information: Plaintiff had seven dates, (which became seven lovers), had told no lies, committed no crimes, gotten 2 traffic tickets and dated George W. Bush as a minor." Ms. Schoedinger's lawsuit was filed in Fort Bend County Court at Law 3. She is listed as her own legal representative. The case never progressed past the beginning stages, as George W. Bush was never served with the suit.
Based on the findings from the Medical Examiner's office has ruled her death a suicide. Walger's report indicates that the case was closed based on the findings of suicide by the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office. Her death certificate is on file in Fort Bend County Clerk's Office...."
As much as I dislike the Troll, I don't want to be party to any "misdisinformation, such as stooping to Falwell hawking "The Clinton Chronicles" as truth instead of fairy tale (among his many other atrocities)....so I ask if anyone here is familiar with the story. I pasted the link, but it wouldn't work in an email, so if it fails, you can search the archives on the homepage for Margie D. Schoedinger and the 2nd story listed opens.
what disgusted me about janet's boob was the white on black rape symbolism where mr timberlake, white schmuck, can just accidently tear off ms. jacksons appendage cover, and he gets to play the offended one. Take your pick:
There are several explanations of the gap between Bush Administration certainties that Iraq had WMD and its inability to find any after the war:
1. The best intelligence said Saddam had WMD but kept them secret (the neo-con line).
2. They're still hidden, but we'll find them (Cheney's line).
3. Saddam's WMD had been destroyed under UNSCOM supervision after the 1991 war (the doves' line).
4. Saddam had some WMD but sent them to Syria or destroyed them just before the 2003 war (the word of Iraqi scientists).
5. Intelligence before the war was too cloudy to confirm or refute any of the above (the CIA practicing CYA).

Please post my message. Alas, I fear posting my name as the retribution might be severe or insidious.
I am an Army Nurse Corps Captain stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in Washington D.C., and I feel compelled to share with anyone who will listen what I have seen. You see, when OIF troops are evac'd out of Germany, the huge majority are brought here to WRAMC by the Air Force flight nurses and docs. I do not have access to any of the numbers of how many wounded and what types of injuries, etc, but I can honestly tell you that the OIF wounded occupy more than half of our two major intensive care units (SICU and MICU) at any given time.
At times, we get so full and are expecting more to arrive, that we have to hound the docs to transfer somebody out of our unit to a ward upstairs so we have some beds for these soldiers. Most of these wounded soldiers come in to our unit on a ventilator breathing for them, with severe wounds caused by IEDs (improvised roadside bombs) or AK-47 GSW (gun shot wounds). Many, many soldiers have already lost arms, limbs, or eyes before they even get to us, and many have received dozens of units of blood before they left Germany.
I am very proud that I am privileged to take care of these brave men and women, but it breaks my heart to realize that the incredible loss that they and their loved ones will have to deal with for the rest of their life seems to have not been for the good of our country. Rather, their pain and sorrow has merely allowed a few greedy souls to make a power grab for more wealth and control. One of my dear friends has tried to convince me that this is all part of God's plan, and the death and pain is for some greater purpose that our leaders are not telling us yet.
I wish I could believe her. It would make my job and daily life much easier, but I cannot buy it. I apologize to the reader for my tangential thought processes, but this never ending situation is getting to many military nurses. Anyway, the following is my main point in reaching out to you.
As you might be aware, the press is being tightly controlled and what is being reported from a medical standpoint is only a fraction of the true reality. Yes, I do believe the daily number of killed that CNN and whoever report is accurate. What I am saying is that the walking wounded are being sorely ignored. Don't believe me? Walter Reed is an open base, not a tightly controlled fort. Just have a valid ID and consent to a vehicle search. Then park, and walk inside. You will see so many 20 something mostly men missing arms, legs, and eyes. The blinders covering your eyes will be ripped away as you see the poor families making their daily walk from the Malogne house to the wards and units to see their son's or husbands.

Wanna unseat a GOP Legislative leader in a battleground state?
This morning, I announced my candidacy in Oregon's 6th State Legislative District. The current occupant is the Majority Whip.
While the seat has a 15% edge in GOP reg, there are also 23% non-affiliated.
The GOP candidate raises in excess of $75K per race from such wonder Oregon (hah) companies as 7-11, Busch, Miller, RJ Reynolds, Safeway, etc...
I'd like to triple the usual Dem fundraising effort and give this guy a fight unlike anything he has ever seen. A tripling would be around $55K.
Wanna help?
Let me know you are an Eschaton donor with extra pennies (what is that amount sourced from here? it is $.01 at dKos).
Oregon has the highest unemployment in the nation, we closed school early last year and may have to again.
The GOP must go! This is part of the 'Taking Back the Nation' that Dean talks about!
I object to you attributing the destruction of existing WMDs by UN with Clinton's help as "the dove's line".
I think I would call it the line left by Occam's Razor.
All other explanations serve a political purpose and could be disproved by evidence. Everyday they each become sillier while the doves' becomes more realistic.
They were all destroyed. The "doves" were against the war because they saw through the BS.

Anonymous Nurse. If you are in fact who you say you are (sorry, too many trolls these days) I want to thank you for the work you do. I also want you to know that part of the reason I and many others fought against this war (and for more accurate info from the press) is that we value the lives of those soldiers.
I have written several times about this issue. Why are wounded soldiers not shown? Where are the images? The right says that to show the images is to politicize them and is disrespectful.
I say that NOT showing them is a political decision and that we don't honor the sacrifice the soldiers have made (and the work that you have done) by ignoring them.
Also, when it comes to supporting the troops it angers me that for all the money spent on this war we are still sending people out without the right equipment (unshielded Hummers and lack of bulletproof vests). These are all things that need to be addressed. If people in America can't see the effect (wounded soliders) they might not worry about the cause (lack of correct equipment.)
You have taken a brave first step in addressing this issue.
My recommendation to you:
Document, Document, Document.
Write what you feel, see and think and mail copies to people you trust.
Take photos of people with their permission (you don't have to publish them).
Sadly I know that people who come forward with this kind info are often attacked. Backgrounds are studied and sullied.
If you ever feel you can reveal your story, be sure to protect yourself both legally and financially before you speak out. The right has no honor when it comes to attacking people saying things they don't like. (I’m ashamed that the same is true of some of the left as well.)
That said, once again I thank you for your message. From the bottom of my heart I am SO grateful for the work that you and your colleagues do every single day.
You are in my prayers.

To the Captain nurse. You are in a tough spot and I would not dream to suggest what you should do. You are carrying a tremendous burden. Every morning you get up and pick it up and carry it through the day.
You might start trying to go inside yourself and look for the woman that you will be in 20 years. She is in there somewhere, she may be hiding, she may be yelling and jumping. And she will tell you what to do.
Get some therapy or see your pastor. Take a few weeks to decide what to do.
Stop watching and reading the news. Concentrate on reality, what you are experiencing.
Fuck cnn and its bullshit, and all the other media whores who play at being reporters.
America is going to be paying for this crap for years and years. Remember how many Gulf war 1 soldiers went off the rails. And their war was over in a few months. What sought of state are some of these kids going to be in in 5,10 years down the line?
Of course, Bush will, by then be sitting on his ranch, living off the profits.

The troops now in Iraq aren't leaving any time soon. Before they're pulled out, about 2000 will be dead and about 20 to 30 thousand--maybe much more -- will be maimed for life.
Once we've rebuilt Iraq, while our own infrastructure crumbles at home, spending nearly a trillion of our tax dollars, the mullahs there will provoke millions into the streets to force the US out. Then they'll establish a theocracy.

Prior to W's seizing of the presidency, I had never been particularly concerned about women's rights. I had always assumed that even the Republicans were giving them a fair shake. However, after various individuals on this site have pointed out W's wanton disregard for the sensibilities of the weaker sex, I've had to adjust my thinking. His brutish treatment of the underaged exotic dancer, and his exploitation of his Hispanic maid have shocked me to the core. One wonders how many other innocent young "pussies" (to use his despicable term) have been despoiled because of his misplaced sense of entitlement. Did he launch the US into this regrettable war simply because he "wasn't getting enough ass"? This pseudo-macho-locker-room-bravado has no place when dealing in matters of life or death. The bloody price of occupation
How far will the US go to maintain its illegitimate primacy in Iraq?
Anonymous | Email | Homepage | 02.14.04 - 9:20 pm | #
The writer probably means well, but it looks like more incendiary than it needs to be.
He goes on to say: Can US primacy be maintained indefinitely in the face of overwhelming hostility? Obviously not, but neither can the US, regardless of which party is in power, afford a setback in Iraq. That would be a major blow against the "empire" and weaken its ability to control other parts of the world.
This is predicated on several misconceptions
1 – the US is not looking for primacy, it is looking to transfer power and Bush would like nothing more than if somebody took the whole thing off of his hands and let him call a parade and call it victory
2 – overwhelming hostility is a whole nuther deal, there is not overwhelming hostility, there is a region that is overwhelmingly mad at Bush, but then who isn’t, and there are huge areas that want the Euros and US to do something to relieve their suffering and bring help, because they shore aren’t getting it from the status quo.
3 – true the US cannot afford a setback, but not because of ***empire*** it is not just ***empire*** which will suffer, it is also the prospect of any future in which dictators get replaced by democracy, because everyone knows that is a difficult transition and people like the Taliban can then turn around and say, you didn’t like us but see, we were able to maintain order, and all the petty dictators all over the place will also feel justified, so it is life-affirming true Dem values that will suffer a set-back
What Bushies and hanky waving Tommy types seem to be hoping is that we will get blunder-bussed into bailing them out and then they can go rah rah rah you see we were right all along. Most people can see through their little games, the place is gonna get fixed but it will take a lot of interaction with the world and the region, all the things that give Bushies a rash, but they are gonna do it and slowly we are gonna get the trajectory fixed.

Can we start a rumor?
Why is the Bush Administration covering up the fact that Al-Quaida terrorists started the forest fires in southern California last fall? Are they afraid that the Murican people will lose confidence in their ability to protect us?
I remember reading a media report in the midst of the fires that someone of middle eastern appearence had been seen throwing highway flares into the woods in the San Bernardino area.

Ed is a big time creep. He'd trash his mother for a nickle. Yes, he would. If he starts throwing crap(and he will), email, call or whatever MTP, MSN whoever. Don't let them get away with it.
Ed quotes:
By the way, I heard Sen. Edwards was disappointed that he got only 13 percent of the vote in New Hampshire after getting 33 percent in Iowa. I guess as a trial lawyer he just assumed he would always get a third.
--------------
And so when the unemployment rate drops, Senator John Edwards looks like his dog just died. When the Dow Jones Industrial Average gains for the day, Senator John Kerry looks like a Red Sox fan after Grady Little left Pedro Martinez in to pitch the eighth inning of Game 7.
Their promise to raise taxes would only reverse the economic gains we’re experiencing now. That’s why Republicans are seeking ways to make President Bush’s tax cuts permanent.

Yup, and here it is in case anyone is interested. Regrettably I haven't been keeping up with the timeline on all of this, so I'm not sure if it's significant that he performed the community service after his return from 'bama. Li'l help?
In the spring of 1972, he left this job and went to Alabama to work on the unsuccessful U.S. Senate campaign of Republican Winton Blount. Returning to Houston, he became a counselor for African-American youngsters in a program called PULL (Professional United Leadership League). The program brought together volunteers from the athletic, entertainment, and business worlds to work with young people in a variety of ways. George taught basketball and wrestling and organized field trips to juvenile prisons, so his young charges could see that side of life and resolve not to end up there themselves.

Federal Reserve Board chairman Alan Greenspan said yesterday Congress should reinstate budget rules that would force lawmakers to cover the estimated $1 trillion (U.S.) that it will cost to make President George W. Bush's tax cuts permanent.
Greenspan said he favoured reductions in government spending to pay for making the tax cuts permanent and suggested that one place to look should be in reducing the social security benefits paid to retirees.

So all the viewers who don't own computers just went, "Hu-uhh? Kerry had an affair?"

The weddings continue in SF:
Some out-of-town couples hadn't planned on getting married but happened to be in town -- people like Don Sund and Gary Thrift of Minneapolis, who said the stars were aligned right for them this Valentines Day.
It was their wedding day -- though until Saturday morning they didn't know it.
The couple of 14 years had flown to San Francisco on Friday to join in the annual festivities of the International Bear Rendezvous, an organization of "down-to- earth, regular guy" gay men who perform charitable works and fund-raising.
But instead of spending the afternoon drinking beer at the Thirsty Bear with their compadres, Sund and Thrift found themselves standing in a daunting line that wrapped around San Francisco's ornate City Hall like a wedding ring on a bride's finger.
"When we left on Friday, we knew that getting married was now a possibility in San Francisco," said Sund, a retired school counselor. "It said so in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune."
They woke up Saturday morning, saw that the weddings that had been possible Friday night still were possible, and they dressed for their big day. They pulled on faded blue jeans, grabbed their plaid flannel shirts and got excited at the prospect of fighting for their rights.
Getting married "is an act of civil disobedience," said Thrift, a continuing education coordinator.
"This country was founded on the principles that all people are created equal," he added. "So anyone should be allowed to marry, gay or straight."
Like Sund and Thrift, Rob Bauer, 63, and partner Peter Supers, 57, were visiting San Francisco from upstate New York when they realized Saturday morning that the marriages were taking place at City Hall. The couple, already celebrating their 34th anniversary on Valentine's Day, scrapped their sightseeing plans and decided to take the plunge together.
"The fates conspired to get us to San Francisco on Valentine's Day on our anniversary," Bauer said. "It was a fait accompli."
Though Bauer, a psychotherapist, and Supers, a teacher, live a short distance from Vermont, they never considered getting a civil union there. They said they were waiting for the real thing.
"Civil unions are not the same as marriage," Bauer said. "It's separate but not equal. This is what we've been waiting for. It's an acknowledgement of equality."
City Hall will be open tomorrow and Monday to continue the civil disobedience. Moronic brownshirt homophobes not welcome!

I'm curious as to whether or not anyone knows about the following line in Bush's discharge papers:
HD TR TexANG per ANGR 36-05, SO ANG-A 158, State of Texas AG, Dept, Austin, Tx and transfered to...
It was redacted from the 2000 release, but released in 2004.
ANGR 36-05 has to do with, in part:
Purpose. National Guard officer personnel policies focus on attaining and maintaining military leadership which directly correlates with achieving a combat ready, professional and dynamic force. It is essential that personnel policies pertaining to the Texas National Guard provide for a viable mobilization capability, promotion opportunity and grade vitality. This regulation establishes the necessary policy and procedures to insure this goal by providing authority for administrative discharge of officers when and where necessary.
Policy. Officers who are substandard in performance of duty or conduct, deficient in character, lacking in professional qualifications or status, or otherwise unsuited for continued military service are not to be retained in the Texas National Guard. Presence of one or more of these conditions will be sufficient basis for the administrative discharge of an officer from the Texas National Guard. Additionally, an officer of the Texas National Guard may be administratively discharged from his appointment for one or more of the following reasons or conditions. [conditions not relevant to request]
Now, I know Bush got an HD, but why would the authority to release him be so damn nasty? Wouldn't they have a nicer reg they could release him under, or is this SOP?
Also, why redact this line in 2000, but release it in 2004?

When I was about 17 and realized I was gay, I immediately thought that meant I could never get married. That was really depressing. Now, for me, getting married isn't the most important thing. It's the equality I want. And I love the fact that we in the gay community are shoving this issue down the moronic bible-banger's throat.
I got teary eyed when I read about the couple of 50 years getting married. My parent's marriage didn't last 10 years.
Doesn't matter if your gay or straight, if someone has a relationship with that depth of committment, damnit they should be able to be married if they want to.

If they want to go easy on a guy, "deficient in character...or otherwise unsuited" is vague enough to cover anything short of murder. Luv you guys, and no one gets more joy from kicking Shrub when he's down than me. But I want to stress a major point raised by the Army nurse at Walter Reed.
I have done my little part to feed the flames about coke-boy's misdeeds to undermine his credibility as WAR PRESIDENT, but the silence about the thousands of mangled men the press, the president and (by default) the public is excreble.
I live in Illinois so perhaps I have access to more media outlets than some. But we all have the same number of Senators, proportianately the same number of Congressmen and receive some amount of electonic and print media. I plan to spend eight hours eaach day on Sunday and Monday demanding, in a stentorious way if necessary, that our media and representatives address this misery post haste.
We understand Bush's desertion, drunkeness and drug abuse shame his malicious abuse of the finest and well intentioned of our fine military force is disgraceful, and that is his fault.
To be silent about the suffering of them is our fault. Enough. Join the power of the web and give the politicians and the media what for.

Apparently not just the Bushies spied on our allies, but they allegedly also went to them when they found out that a compromise might be feasible supposedly that would avert the war and told them to squish it, Mexico and Chile are plenty upset about it and they are about to spill the beans, besides, the Brits are under pressure to clear the name of the patriotic young lady who blew the whistle on their activities and Mexico and Chile are going to lodge a formal complaint.
Best part is where is it in the newspapers of record, gee they are more interested in talking about a photo which is actually bogus or something else, whatever, who knows.
First question for their ombudsman may be is there any chance these newspapers will quit being Bushie lap dawg poodles or is it now permanently the case, thank you.

I left my house late for work into a heavy snowfall here in Louisiana. The snow didn't stick because it's too warm. People don't know how to drive in snowfall around here driving too slowly like they're caught in a blizzard. And they wouldn't move over to the right. Once I got to work, nothing was happening so I went back outside and sat in my car on the parking lot and watched it come down.

Back when I used to work (this is a shitty remark, I'm only 52) I was generally made to feel bad when I came in after 10. My nominal target was 9 or 9:30, although most of my co-workers made it in considerably earlier. I inevitably out-stayed them, so they couldn't generally complain. (Being one of the owners didn't hurt.)
When we linked up with a Cambridge-based software outfit, I was told that my opposite number kept the same hours. Which in a sense was true: he showed up at noon (9am Pacific). It took me forever to realize that the intent of that statement was actually generous.

'This won't go away. What happened is much nastier than is being reported'
By Adrian Blomfeld in Nairobi and Andrew Alderson
(Filed: 15/02/2004)
Alex Polier, the twenty-four year old journalist who could end Senator John Kerry's hopes of becoming the next president of the United States is alleged to have had a two-year affair with the front-runner for the Democratic nomination. Last night the rumours were in danger of becoming a full-blown scandal.
"This is not going to go away," one American friend of Miss Polier said yesterday. "What actually happened is much nastier than is being reported."
The allegations come at a crucial time for the senator. Polls showed him leading Mr Bush by 52 per cent to 42 per cent, and aides will be anxious to see if the apparent scandal affects his standing among voters.
Miss Polier, a former intern who also spent some time in 1998 doing work experience at the Houses of Parliament in London, is in Kenya staying with Yaron Schwartzman, her fiance and a member of the country's fashionable young set. The couple have refused to make any comment on her alleged links with Senator Kerry, who is married to Teresa Heinz Kerry, an heiress to the food empire.
Senator Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran dubbed the new JFK, has vehemently denied any relationship with Miss Polier, and shrugged off allegations that he had a two-year affair with her from 2001. "I just deny it categorically. It's rumour. It's untrue. Period," he said.
Mr Kerry, 60, has won 12 out of the 14 Democratic primaries and has looked all but certain to seal the nomination to take on President George W. Bush in November's elections.
His aides have blamed a dirty tricks campaign for bringing the allegations about Miss Polier into the public eye; they first surfaced last week on a Right-wing internet site, the Drudge Report, which famously first broke the news of Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky.
Miss Polier's parents, Terry and Donna, from Malvern, Pennsylvania, added fuel to the fire by claiming that Mr Kerry did pursue their daughter.
"I think he's a sleazeball. I did wonder if she didn't get that feeling herself," said Mr Polier. "He's not the sort of guy I'd choose to be with my daughter.
"John Kerry called my daughter and invited her to be on his re-election committee. She talked to him and decided against it."
The Drudge website also quoted retired Gen Wesley Clark, one of Mr Kerry's rivals for the nomination, as having told journalists off the record: "Kerry will implode over an intern issue."
Mr Clark later dropped out of the race and endorsed Mr Kerry.
Miss Polier, a journalist who once worked for Associated Press, is a graduate of Columbia University, New York. She apparently met the senator as she was beginning her media career. Miss Polier and her fiance were believed to be hiding yesterday at the Nairobi home of Mr Schwartzman's parents, who moved to Kenya from

"The social climber has been busted for speeding, driving under the influence and trespassing. He even jumped bail in one case, court records show."
The warrant was recalled after Basabe had Los Angeles bondsman Harry Fradkin post bail for him, but then he was a no-show at the next hearing - so the cash was forfeited.
"When we wrote the bond, we got collateral, the full 10 grand, from some friend of his, so we were covered," Fradkin said.
So: drunk driving, speeding, failing to show up when ordered to, and bailed out of his messes by anonymous rich friends.

Don't believe anything Drudge puts out, for a start.
Rule of thumb, the more expensive the medium is to produce the more likely they are to have sold out. This is especially true if it is for profit broadcasting.
I'm just about convinced that the real future of real news is the internet. Along with the Republican lie machines the low cost of the internet opens it up for people who won't sell out. BuzzFlash is turning into my morning paper. Think of the trees it will save. This will all end if Bush gets four years to do it. Little Powell will get the rules changed and Eschaton, Buzzflash, Sully Watch, Fablog,... will be turned off faster than that Russian TV newsreader got the hook in the 80s for telling the truth about the war in Afghanistan. Someone pointed out at the time that that was something that would never happen in the U.S., that someone would tell the truth on TV news, that is.

I'd still like to know why, nearly a month after it appeared, the Financial Times story entitled "Bush's Pipe Dreams on Reconstructing Iraq" has gotten so little attention! Featuring an exclusive interview with fmr Energy Secy James Schlesinger, it shows that the entire Bush admin. defied all expert advice it received, continuing to argue until last month that Iraq's oil industry, not the US taxpayer, would fund reconstruction. In other words, they didn't just cherry pick: they seem to have manufactured their argument out of whole cloth.
Bound to tick off the business community.

Congratulations! By picking Kerry, we have now enabled the deep thinkers of the DNC to make another valiant effort at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in November:
I guess they didn't really learn much at all from Dean's candidacy. They're still under the illusion that it was Clinton's right-of-center appeasement that got him reelected, rather than the obvious, and correct, reason, that Clinton was just a great campaigner. This party is doomed.

I mean, Ed Gilespie goes on there and actually says that calling Bush aWol is a felony which should be punishable by jail time (yes, he actually said that!) - WTF! - and Russert doesn't even call him on it!! Why didn't Russert get after him about that whole "John Kerry is a Jane Fonda Democrat" meme? The RNC is dredging up Jane Fonda, for Christssake! This is their idea of being in step with "mainstream" America - bashing an actress who hasn't done anything remotely political in 30 years!!?? By the way, ED Gillespie is such a chickenshit he wouldn't even agree to go on, mano -a-mano with Charlie Rangel (who would have torn that lameass GOP hack a new asshole, right there on national TV). The only positive note I can think of occurred when Russert (sort of) took Gillespie to task for claiming that John Kerry gets his money from special interests, while Bush has been raising millions for his campaign. Again, however, a real journalist would have been way tougher.

Problematic parenting
After reading about an appeals court upholding Florida's ban on homosexuals adopting children, I decided to do an informal survey of my gay and lesbian friends, asking them one simple question: Were/are your parents heterosexual or homosexual? Amazingly, 100 percent responded that their parents where heterosexual. That's right, 100 percent. I found this to be a very disturbing statistic, and I hope that Florida will investigate this thoroughly before allowing any more heterosexuals to adopt children.

Only thing more lulu than that is Steve Forbes and others claiming somehow the jobs will show up, um no, they won’t, plus the economy is lousy, this looks like the same kind of bubble they had before.
Even before they told us it was ***productivity*** we don’t think so, whatever it is, it should be raising take home pay and increasing jobs and if we don’t see that, it ain’t working on Main Street, so there.
Half the time I don’t even know what the Bushie eco team is saying, that Snow dude, he may be very nice but nobody knows what he is saying, I think it sounds like there, there, snookums, it is gonna be OK, well, huh, that doesn’t do it, it is not reassuring at all, and as for Greenspan, enough already, we need a change there too, he is losing all creds and now is practically near-zero.
We need our robust, reality-based and energetic eco team, we need Alice Rivlin, Bobby Rubin and Laura Tyson back, we need the Galbraiths and our other economists, we need to put this country back to work, retrieve our jobs from off-shoring and increase real wages and real benefits for families, only then will the economy take off, this Bush economy is in a ditch, only thing is they keep trying to tie a pretty little bow on it and make it try to pass, but it don’t work for us.

The "brazen display of political chutzpah" by the Bush campaign accusing John Kerry of being "an 'unprincipled' collector of special-interest cash," via a "video e-mailed Thursday night to 6 million supporters," is brazen indeed, but in the light of Nader's imminent candidacy it seems more calculated as a maneuver having long term benefits that out-weigh the blatant hypocrisy recognized in the short term.
It's impossible to believe that the GOP political machine would be so naive to use this issue to contrast Bush with Kerry, or to call into question Kerry's sincerity regarding his frequent attacks on the power of corporate interests, since the issue diminishes Bush far more than Kerry when closely examined. There must be more behind this attack than what appears only as a self inflicted wound.
I suggest that Republican covert support of Ralph Nader and foreknowledge of his imminent decision to run for president inspired the video e-mail, the intention of which is to put Kerry in the same league as the shameless Bush with regard to corporate interests and exploit inevitable Nader accusations that there is no difference between the two major parties with regard to his central issue, corrupt corporate power over elected officials. This tactic also inoculates Bush against coming to mind first and foremost during Nader's general attacks on the political establishment being beholden to corporate interests, while at the same time peels off, into Nader's camp, would be Kerry voters who, when once again vividly reminded, are sickened by the overt bribery engaged in by corporations and lobbyists, an issue that Nader undoubtedly will make the cornerstone of his campaign. The ideas expressed in the video are tailor made for Nader's mind-set and become unavoidable for him to address, the result being Bush as the only real beneficiary of Nader's anti-corporate argument, in that, Republicans hope a portion of the progressive vote disillusioned by Nader's rhetoric will desert Kerry, as they did Gore in 2000.
Another indictator of the above design is, why has the GOP e-mailed this to 6 million supporters, as in, preaching to the choir? Is the e-mail tantamount to the distribution of a GOP talking point that is to be incessantly echoed? Or, is the well publicized release of the video e-mail merely a vehicle to get into the public forum Kerry's vulnerability on the issue before Nader declares his candidacy and invariably starts assailing corporate interests that infest Washington?
By painting Kerry with the same brush as Bush with regard to being corrupted by corporate interests, the GOP is hijacking a major portion of Nader's platform to be used as a tool that can only reduce Kerry's support, leaving Bush's support wholly intact since Republicans are brazenly in the pocket of corporations and their supporters don't seem to care one whit as they feel it's their due as the ruling class.
