That line got both a real (not polite) laugh from the audience and then applause. Not a single boo (unlike Elvis Costello singing "Peace in Our Time" on Carson under the Reagan raj). Letterman has a palpable distaste for Bushco, if only because he's always been the cleverest dorm guy who hates the stupid frat guys. I know his limitations, but I fully expect him to be joking with Kofi Annan about sending Bush to The Hague for war crimes before this election cycle is out.
Related TV news--Jow Wilson was on Charlie Rose tonight, and as much as I like him, he pronounced "nuclear" the W way--"nu-kyoo-lar." Hey, Joe--that won't impress the educated swells at The Hague!!!

I remember a great Letterman moment from Father's day 2001. Dave found a great still photo of W escorting his mother under an umbrella with his father glaring. Dave provided the voices:
Dave: Now, look at this, folks, it looks just like he's saying:
George Bush Sr.: You IDIOT!
W: What? Huh? I got the umbrella!
Dave then repeated this a few times, emphasizing the "You IDIOT!"--almost as if he was expressing his own personal feelings about the pResident.
And I remember not so long ago that Letterman was doing "and then the Democrats get lose in a landslide in November" jokes. The late night comic tide is turning, whoo-hoo!

All the jokes about Clinton's sexual prowess didn't seem to hurt him.
A joke I loathed circulated during the election campaign in '96: The candidates were asked whether they wore briefs or shorts. Clinton said he wore (one or the other); Dole said, "Depends." It was clear that Clinton would win.
I almost wish Kerry did have an affair lurking just out of sight - or is that a reason to prefer Edwards?

Somewhat OT since it's not late-night comedy, but I think Bush may be losing Lou Dobbs. He's been absolutely relentless this past week on jobs-related issues, among other things. Bad Jim--I'm familiar with the works of Freud, and the joke makes perfect sense as you describe it on several levels. The Ds have been conquered, stomped and humiliated by Bushco, like the Iraqis. The Ds seem powerless in the face of Bushco's might but have a few tricks up their sleeve yet, like the Iraqis. The Ds will benefit immensely from Bushco's arrogant imcompetence, like the Iraqis. So what's the problem? I didn't think the joke was all that funny either, being a rote parallel-substitution-reversal, devoid of allusive mystery. It played on the contrast of Bushco voluntarily handing over power vs. involuntarily--a rather obvious twist.
Pesonally, I've identified with Iraqis throughout this war a lot more than I've identified with Bushco, so I have no objection to the parallel.
You're likely familiar with Civilization and Its Discontents, wherein Freud describes how "culture" and "repression" are the laudatory and accusatory names for the same complex of phenomena. In a healthy culture, as in a healthy personality, there's a balance maintained wherein the repressive forces provide enough collective discipline to promote the life-affirming ("erotic" in the broad sense) forces. But when the repressive forces overwhelm, there is a collective breakdown akin to the neurotic personality, which tries to fix its disorder through irrational and self-sabotaging means.
Personally, I see the collective US in full nervous breakdown mode, with W standing a good chance of winning in November. As Freud stated, "The neurotic compulsion can never be satisfied; it can only be repeated."

Don't get me wrong. I damned well would have laughed at that joke, because the punchline is from Dave's lips to God's ear.
There was a record from an obscure L.A. art group (whatever that means) titled "Civilizations and its Discotheques". It's unsurprising that they remained obscured, but I will giggle forever after.
I'm hopeful; I'm also not entirely unsympathetic with Iraqis (I read Riverbend, for example), so my feelings about the joke are way more ambiguous than my initial stentorian post.
Michelangelo's Moses is sited barely a stone's throw from the Colosseum in Rome. While the latter is obnoxiously thronged, the first is rarely visited. It's worth a look.

A campaign ad we hope to see:
Some footage with sound of President Bush being wildly cheered by the sailors on the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln. Text: "President Bush welcomed home and thanked the sailors on the USS Lincoln for their service to their country in Iraq and for successfully accomplishing their mission."
Then show footage of Vietnam war servicemen debarking from planes to small crowds of family and friends. Then show a serviceman watching Senator Kerry and the demonstrations on TV proudly displaying the flag of the enemy he had been fighting. Then show him watching and listening to Senator Kerry accuse them of murdering innocent civilians. Then show the text "John Kerry did not welcome our servicemen and women home."

Lefteye--I stand corrected on DL's frat status. Google reveals that there's even a book on the subject:
The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi: David Letterman, the College Years
Author:
Jeff Lewis
Guild Press of Indiana October, 1997 Paperback
ISBN: 1578600219
Somehow this volume escaped my attention; I must have been too busy reading the Quentin Tarantino bio wherein QT's mother revealed the inspiration for the title Reservoir Dogs.
In the spirit of Bushco, I stand by my original statement, even though it's wrong--has anyone ever heard DL mention his frat on his show? I suspect on some level he's deeply embarassed by fratdom. And as a dorm guy myself, DL has always reminded me of the guys who used to hang out in the commons room waching Star Trek reruns and the local news with an expert satirical eye. I don't imagine DL putting up with road trips and self-denunciations rituals with any grace, but I guess that shows I've bought the image he likes to project.

4. Did you know that John Kerry is an phoney eastern snob that probably has no idea who drives #24. He is totally out of touch with common people. Have you ever heard the phrase "Do you know who I am?" before? You will.
5. When is the last time a senator won a presidential election? Do you know why?
6. Can anyone name one issue Senator Kerry has not done a major flip-flop on in his career?
7. Do you have any idea how much Vietnam veterans hate Jane Fonda? I am not talking about the so-called band of brothers Kerry shamlessly parades in front of crowds and the cameras. Read what happened to Hanoi Jane in Waterbury, CT some time ago.

Tomato, that's why the SCOTUS replacements are so critical.
You know, this whole issue of religious influence on government is ridiculous. Dictating a stronger religious code is NOT going to make people more moral (especially when it comes to sex), less apt to abuse drugs and alcohol, kinder, etc. We get too many daily examples of the widespread hypocrisy of man, ESPECIALLY among those who profess to be devoutly religious. Constant references to biblical dicta also ignore the non-Christian, non-religious segment of the population.
Separation of church and state MUST be maintained.

Here's an idea for the Dem nominee..
At some time after he wins the nomination, The Dem nominee should secure and announce who he would pick for his cabinet IN ADVANCE. VP, Sec of State, Atty. Gen., etc. There are a lot of great options here, and I think it would have a big positive effect on the minds of voters.
What lots of independent/swing voters don't like about Bush is that they elected him as a moderate, and he wound up pushing a radical conservative agenda. This is largely seen as the result of the extreme conservatives in his cabinet: Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, Rove, etc.
If Kerry or Edwards announce their cabinet in advance, he will show how favorably he matches up at these positions. Voters will be forced to consider the Executive Branch AS A TEAM, and weigh performance at each position.
This will make it much easier for Edwards/Kerry to capture the center once he wins the nomination, label the Repubs as undemocratic and nepotistic, and simultaneously negate the "inexperience/leader/resolve" labels Rove and the Repubs will try to pin.
I really think this could work, because this would open multiple lines of attack on Bush's cronies. Each cabinet member could issue their own "position statement" that would hit the Repubs where it hurts, in their "extremities".
The big IF in all this is: 1. whether the cabinet could be selected and signed on to early (since everyone has career plans) and 2. whether unity can be maintained. If the slightest bit of bickering appears between the appointees-to-be then the whole strategy would go down the tubes.
I'd be interested to hear what people think about this.. thanks

Kerry-Edwards cabinet picks
Sec. of State - Richard Holbrook
UN Rep. - Al Gore
National Sec adviser - Anthony Zinni
DoD - Wesley Clark
Treasury - Brad Delong
Federal Reserve - Alan Blinder
Healthcare Task Force - Howard Dean
WH political adviser - Atrios

UN Rep. - Al Gore
I'd love to see Bill Clinton take Kofi Anon's place at the UN.
The stress it would cause most right-wingers would be priceless, especially if Kerry's president.
I start laughing just thinking about it.

"If it weren't for the possibility of Osama being yanked out of a hole during the Republican Convention, I'd be feeling pretty good about the chances of ditching Bushco."
Well, when that happens, I can only hope that there are at least some courageous members of the Press who will point out how strangely coinicidental it is that, just a month or so before the election, the Bush regime manages to pull Osama out of a proverbial hat (esp since they were unable to find him for more than two years). One can only hope. Hell, I'm still waiting for the story about how it the Kurds who actually handed Saddam over to us to gain traction.

Excerpt from "Peggy Noonan explains how to perform a 45-minute blowjob" (thanks for the link above Anon):
"Intellectuals start all the trouble in the world."
I like your idea of a shadow cabinet, but as you say, it would require a party loyalty ethic not often seen in our history (the current rethuglicans being the grotesque exception).

Kei and Yuri,
Have you ever seen Rick Mercer's "Talking To Americans" schtick? OMG...
Liberals love to use dead servicemen/women for political purposes don't they?
Uhh.....just what do you think the decision not to attend any arrivals by Bush/Rove is???
Or, the use of NYC as near to 9/11 as they could for their convention???
Cynical political manipulation of whatever will serve their ends is the ONLY thing this Administration is about, but I guess you don't get that perpsective from up W's ass.
I am sick to death of Bush ass-kissers lamenting the faults of supposed leftists with the overwhelming evidence of Bush's cynicism and lies.

SWR, I agree with your UN pick ...
I don't like any of them but Kerry as President, Hillary as Senate Majority Leader and Bill Clinton as head of the UN would be just enough to drive most of the right over the deep end.
And you want Al Gore as Secretary of the Interior, not as rep to the UN, Secretary of the Interior or some kind of position as "Environmental Czar."

Not long ago, I remember Letterman telling a joke explaining how the Democratic primaries work....concluding with something like, "and that that nominee will go on to lose to George W. Bush in a landslide." Looks like he's caught up with the changing political climate.

Passion of Christ, I hope Dennis' eight points are the basis Rove's campaign blueprint.
I'll grant him one thing, listening to Kerry speak for five minutes doesn't have the same thrill as waiting for dip shit to fuckup.
Jane Fonda may indeed be unpopular with many, but unlike he equally loathed John Ashcroft, she doesn't have her hands on the Constitution.
I think the phrase is "bring'em on."

The best thing about Bush's political demise would be an end to the control of foreign policy by the Neocons who lied us into this war and who are pushing for more wars. (Syria,Iran)
They are now trying to shift the blame for their lies. Raimondo at antiwar.com has a great piece on this:
"It looks like the Bush administration will be handing over power to the Iraqis by June 30th...and, then they'll be handing over power to the Democrats on Nov 2nd."
-Letterman

And sooner we say bye bye to Alan Greenspan, the better.
"Liberals love to use dead servicemen/women for political purposes don't they? Just like Kerry did."
Yeah, and the Commander-in-Chief (TM) has been using American servicemen and women as unpaid extras in his campaign ads ever since 9-11. There's the campaign ad on the USS Abraham Lincoln, the Thanksgiving campaign ad, ad nauseam (pun intended). I believe that's what they call the power of incumbency.
Come to think of it, every exercise in foreign adventurism, domestic police statism, and crony capitalism since 9-11 has been justified by waving the bloody shirt and saying "9-11 changed everything." Even a lot of Republicans are getting patriotism fatigue from watching him wrap himself in the flag and chant "national security." So apparently Bush isn't above using dead New Yorkers for political purposes, is he?
I really don't dispute that Kerry's a piece of shit. My ideal candidate would be Ron Paul.
But unlike some candidates of the past, Kerry's oppo research staff are more than willing to respond by pointing out--with tons of documented evidence--that Bush is an even bigger and more worthless piece of shit. Crony capitalism, sports socialism, insider deals, serial Chapter Elevens, Daddy's friends, and Daddy's money: that's pretty much the career of Dumb W. Ass in a nutshell. He is nothing but human garbage.

RE: Dennis Slater -- "Do you have any idea how much Vietnam veterans hate Jane Fonda? I am not talking about the so-called band of brothers Kerry shamlessly parades in front of crowds and the cameras. Read what happened to Hanoi Jane in Waterbury, CT some time ago."
I speak as someone who lost his father -- MAJ Donald E. Koelper, USMC -- in the early stages of the Vietnam War. He was the 225th American to lose his life in a conflict that eventually claimed over 58,000 American lives, and millions of Vietnamese live.
I consider holding any sort of grudge over perceived past slights to be a complete waste of my time, regardless of whether I'm holding it personally or having to hear about it from someone else.
In fact, I've even thought about developing a serious grudge against people who continue to express their hatred of Jane Fonda because of her perceived role in the anti-war movement -- but I've really got better things to do.
Those Americans who acted according to their own conscience during that divisive period in our history, and were part of the anti-war movement, were motivated as much by their love of country as any veteran who served. It's long since time that people recognize that, and stop re-fighting the old battles of yore.
To be sure, there were those persons on all side, like a young Jane Fonda, whose passion led to excess -- but those were certainly passionate and excessive times, to say the least.
Ms. Fonda has long since publicly apologized for her 1972 journey to Hanoi, during the midst of war. I genuinely appreciate her sincerity and her apparent remorse for hurting veterans. Why can't you? Are you that emotionally stunted, that you would allow events from 30 years ago to continue to dictate your current actions and thinking?
We are now approaching the 29th anniversary of the fall of Saigon and the end of the war. While none of us will ever forget our personal losses, I've moved on, my mother has moved on, and my family has moved on.
I would respectfully suggest that you do the same. You need to relieve yourself of your heavy burden, and cast down that chip you've been carrying so prominently on your shoulder. I guarantee that your personal outlook on life will improve measurably, once you've stopped playing the unbecoming part of a victim of our long-ago national tragedy.
Aloha and good night.
