GravatarYou mean George Bush wants Specter to win, right?

GravatarYou mean George Bush wants Specter to win, right?

Gravatar"In two straight highly contested races, Bush's endorsement has, at best, been meaningless"

Joke fodder aside, this is a wonderful statement. Indicating an erosion of base support, its suggestion that Bush's endorsement could actually HURT a candidate's chances rings true to word on the street.
There are numerous indications that the great white hope, aka the Bush/Cheney administration is coming apart at the seams.
Or maybe it's just wishful thinking.

GravatarAnyone know what is with Haloscan? For some reason it wouldn't let me post just now...

GravatarStupid haloscan. I always get antsy about predictions that so-and-so is positioned too extreme to win after the primary. It doesn't always work that way.

Gravataris george trying to get a little quid pro quo?

Gravatarot, but the religion thread is (surprise) wicked long.

GravatarAs a resident of Pee-Aay, I heartily endorse Joe Hoeffel and have sent him some turkee! I would love to see a Bush endorsement become the kiss of death, as it were. It's gonna be an interesting summer...

GravatarWe assume that Bush's endorsement meaning less to extreme conservatives is a good thing. I think I could make a case that the country is beginning to consider Bush a moderate, not just because of his administration's ability to wrap its agenda in moderate-sounding platitudes, but because many in the country have shifted rightwards.

GravatarI had the pleasure of driving to and from Pittsburgh from Washington D.C. to visit my dad on a business trip. Trying to flee from the Penn Turnpike, the worst toll road I have seen personally, I tok the National Pike (U.S. 40) back to Maryland. Along stretches in Somerset County, PA, I listened to Rush on the two AM signals I could draw in the mountains.

It was a strange juxtaposition, a huge wind power farm lining the mountains along US 219 while the airwaves were pollutted by talk of drilling ANWR to power the SUV's that Kerry does or doesn't own (I don't care either way). I didn't listen to Rush, Hannity, and Liddy for them - I listened for the Specter-Toomey ads as well as the who's-a-better-crook ads in the local AG race.

How strange that this place that cannot decide between the "proud conservative" Toomey and the Bush-supported Specter is a battleground state for Kerry v. Bush. I hope Toomey wins, and that Hoeffel cleans his clock.

GravatarIf an endorsement by George W. Bush doesn't mean a damn thing, then we're getting close to the way the world is supposed to be.

If an endorsement by George W. Bush means certain defeat, then that's right about where we should be.

GravatarFor what reason had Dubya endorsed Specter and why should we think the endorsement was sincere? He might simply have had his fingers crossed on one hand behind his back while he was patting Arlen on the shoulder and telling him sweet nothings with the other?

I don't think anything Dubya says is truthful under any circumstances. This man is too harshly controled by his corporate and Rove/Cheney masters to really have a thought of his own.

Gravatarhow can you even give that creature W. the magnificent title of Augustus. it is one of honor, certianly not befitting a monster that has killed hundreds in a war that he lied to congress about.

Consider this me jawboning you to never call him that again

GravatarThe WH is seriously convinced that Arlen Specter on the ticket actually makes Pennsylvania more winnable in November. I'm not so sure that's true ... there are a TON of right wing loonies who would rather vote for Ted Kennedy than Arlen Specter, because - at least Kennedy is honest about who he is. I think a Toomey win might actually make PA more competitive, especially if this is an election all about getting your base out.

That said, Joe Hoeffel can and will beat either one of these fools ... he just needs the resources (just sent my $50)

Oh, also ... Bush is supporting Specter because Arlen is a mean, vindictive son of a bitch, and he would hold all of Bush's judicial appointments hostage for the next 6 months if he didn't.

GravatarMaybe Bush likes him because he has a really killer nickname and George wouldn't get to use it anymore.

Gravatar1. I hope y'all are reading the Hoeffel Blog regularly.

2. Let's break down how this plays out:

(a) Toomey wins. For conservatives, just defeating Specter might be enough, and it's questionable whether the CFG, et al, has the money or interest in financing him past this point. A Toomey win nationalizes this race on the Dem side, and opens up huge fundraising avenues for Hoeffel, esp. among groups that otherwise might continue to give to Specter (pro-choice, Jews, lawyers, some labor). But if Toomey keeps with the Big Mo, it's a real race against a man who told Chris Matthews last week that he hadn't ruled out putting women in jail for exercising their reproductive freedom.

(b) Specter wins. It's up to Hoeffel to point out how far to the right Specter has veered, both during the last six years and esp. during this campaign. But while Specter is battered and bruised, he's got six months to re-fundraise and rehabilitate his image.

I used to be agnostic about who I wanted Hoeffel to face. Not any more.

GravatarIf Bush hadn't endorsed Specter, Toomey would be 15 points ahead in the polls. His and Santorum's endorsements are what will save Arlen's mangy ass.

GravatarLimeRickey: Let us know when the book comes out! Soon, I hope!

GravatarGeorge W. Augustus Bush

Sorry, but the real Augustus had more going for him. It's unfair to relate his name with this frat-boy walking disaster.

GravatarIn my informal poll of lawn-signs, from the edge of Philly out to Chesco, there was a huge predominance of Toomey signs a couple of weeks ago. Hardly a Specter sign to be seen.

Then last week they almost all disappeared. Now it's about 50/50, but still not so many. I don't have any idea if that's because dirty tricks either by Toomey ops (putting them up) or Specter ops (taking them down). Most of the remaining signs are not on people's lawns, but on highway medians, etc., where they don't really have an "owner". Maybe people watched the debates and said "to hell with BOTH of 'em"

Go back a couple of years and the same lawn-sign poll predicted a solid Rendell win in the governor's race.
