I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

Sex offenders for Bush!

OMG. HA HA.

I had to come out of the lurking shadows for this one!

good catch

How is it spelled again, IOKIYAR?

Yeah, but does he have a boyservant who makes him peanut butter and strawberry jelly sandwiches?

GravatarDoesAss Crack know about this?

GravatarMentioning that Sinclair officials have to pay for sex is counter to the public interest!

GravatarI don't know. Sounds like he was just supporting those free market entrepreneurs. You know how Repubs like their independent contractors.

GravatarSigh.

GravatarYet more evidence that Republicans cannot get laid without flashing their wallets.

A.

GravatarJust another Republican who can't keep his fly zipped.

GravatarIs anyone really surprised by this anymore?

Oh, right, about 45% of the country.

On the plus side, it took what, less than 48 hours for that to surface? Yay Atrios!

GravatarThis should come as no suprise.

I wonder if we can get Bill Bennett to comment on this.

GravatarWho's got time to watch Ted Koppel read names of Iraq war dead when you've got to hustle down to the streetcorner to find a hooker who'll give you a blow job?

GravatarBeing a whore is Sinclairs business.

GravatarWe refuse to cover this story because its bad for the whore...I mean war effort.

GravatarMusta gotten tired of all that free sex with goats.

GravatarDear David Smith,

You're been pwn3d.

Sincerely,

GravatarHas everybody seen this?

http://billmon.org/archives/001432.html

It's freaking horrible!

GravatarAssuming that Sinclair felt it was in the public interest to discuss BJ's and the President of the US, surely discussing BJs and the president of Sinclair is equally of the publics' interest.

GravatarGreat find atrios.

GravatarT-shirt idea:

Tired of getting fucked for money?
Vote Democrat!

A.

GravatarWhere is Larry Flynt when you need him? We need a good ol' fashioned conservative outing like back in the good ol' days.

Gravatarwell thank goodness his arrest was "unrelated to company business".

Because, that makes it OK.

GravatarHuge surprise.

GravatarOh shit! I accidentally cut and pasted this article into my e-mail client and sent it to David Smith's address dsmith@sbgnet.com!

Gravatarhaha, the Block!

GravatarMikhail Capone: yes and yes. We had an entire thread on that story down the page.

Old Hat, is the guy in the 'OWNED' image being socked in the face with a snake? Can't tell, the image is about the size of a postage stamp.

GravatarPost the link, please? xo

GravatarThis is why I admire Atrios so much! How do you manage to ferret out these juicy bits at the right moment?
You are my hero!

Gravatar"Unrelated to company business," they say...

That's an awfully strong denial.

Has anyone looked a little further into this, to see whether Neil Bush is involved?

GravatarHmm... looks like Smith sold off a lotta Sinclair stock in late December 2003, which was immediately followed by a huge dropoff in Sinclair stock value.

GravatarPlease read my new book - Sex, Lies, and Politics: The Naked Truth -
when it comes out in July.

GravatarKarma is a BITCH.

GravatarYeah, Mikhail, some of the pictures were linked in another thread below, but that was a larger version of that image than I'd seen previously. Blows my mind!

OT, Judy and Candy on CNN just did a piece on the "Mission Accomplished" speech from May 1, 2003 -- showed bush today making excuses for it, even included some regrets from admin members, etc. and guess what (where's Ricky?), there was not even a short mention of the flight that preceded it!!! Hah, hah! I hope that particular piece of footage is played over and over tomorrow.

BTW, evidently Kerry and Gephardt are making a joint appearance this evening in Missouri.

GravatarOld Hat, is the guy in the 'OWNED' image being socked in the face with a snake? Can't tell, the image is about the size of a postage stamp.

Yeah, it's the classic. I couldn't find the fullsize image so I used the Google cache one.

Do you have a copy of the fullsize?

Gravatarwhat will we tell the yard apes?

GravatarMission(ary position) Accomplished!

GravatarHee hee... "unrelated to company business", I like that. Because, you know, sometimes when the CEO of a broadcasting group picks up hookers it is related to company business. This time he was off the clock though.

GravatarIf it weren't so important this would be so FUNNY!!!!

GravatarHmm... looks like Smith sold off a lotta Sinclair stock in late December 2003, which was immediately followed by a huge dropoff in Sinclair stock value.

You might want to let the SEC know about that.

It might be nothing, but they can sort that out.

GravatarShocking! A man of such shameful character controlling teevee programming and making decisions for the viewing public.

I'm waiting for someone to insist this was a one-time fall from grace.

GravatarSo... not to, like, bring up due process or anything, but... was he convicted or something?

Gravatar(º)(º)

GravatarThis is too, too rich. Sinclair's prez can go cruising for a $5 whore, but refuses to honor our dead soldiers.

GravatarFor those of you who aren't afraid to go to drudge, he has posted Sinclair's response to Sen, McCain.

GravatarOops!

GravatarMaybe Nightline should do a show consisting of only the whores frequented by Sinclair executives and staff.

Maybe a series.

Gravatarhas anyone looked into what the Sinclair executives were doing during the Vietnam era?

Are any of them veterans?

GravatarAtrios, did you catch Reef the Dog's comments?

Looks like Reef may have found evidence of insider trading on Smith's part!

GravatarFor those who won't go to drudge, here is a synopsis: Sinclair is freakin freepin crazy!

GravatarPls pass on

NYC BENEFIT FOR PEACE ACTIVISTS FACING JAIL

WHAT: BENEFIT CONCERT

WHO: Queer feminist activist band from NYC "The Syndicate", Bands Against Bush power pop band "Gladshot", popular rockers "Marwood", Brooklyn’s own “Motico”, all-girl punk outfit "Pie", comedienne and activist Drae Campbell as MC and Special Guests TBA.

WHERE: Knitting Factory, 74 Leonard Street, NYC Directions at www.knittingfactory.com

WHEN: Sunday, May 2nd, 2pm

HOW MUCH: $15

WHY? This is a benefit show for the 16 non-violent activists who were arrested during a protest on March 26, 2003. They were protesting Rachel Corrie’s death, violations of Palestinian human rights, and the war on Iraq. They were recently convicted, and in what is seen as an effort to punish activists in the lead up to the GOP convention in August, now face jail time at their May 12th sentencing. This is an important case for the activist community, and the defendants need our support.

You can also help by donating funds at: www.m26.org

GravatarI couldn't find a follow up news story. I don't know what happened to the charges.

Perhaps you can email the article to him and ask?

GravatarNice. How much you want to bet this guy would go off on a rant about immorality upon hearing an argument about legalizing prostitution?

Hypocrisy is so fun.

Nightmares For Sale - You're Damn Right I'm Angry!

GravatarWhile war mongering is my chief occupation, I do a lot of whore mongering on the side.

Gravatardsmith@sbgnet.com

GravatarThat letter from David smith is repulsive!! What an asshole!

Let me begin by saying that no organization more fully supports our military than Sinclair. In no way was our decision intended to show any disrespect to the brave members of our military, particularly those who have sacrificed their lives in service of our country. To the contrary, our decision was based on a desire to stop the misuse of their sacrifice to support an anti-war position with which most, if not all, of these soldiers would not have agreed.

Liar. Just ask some of them, you moron. Most, if not all, my eye.

GravatarAnother BTW, Woodruff was just interviewing Novak, who did a wrap-up on the PA election and related how some audience members walked out when Santorum went to the lectern to speak this week at a Catholic Univ. Novak ended it by saying, and I quote, he thinks Santorum may be "in a little trouble with his constituents."

Also, evidently Spectre has said that bush shouldn't count on his vote.

GravatarDid it.

Any bets on whether or not he replies?

GravatarThis is the same David Sinclair who makes 1.01 million a year? And he is not ordering hookers in? Cheap bastard!

Link

GravatarThis makes my day. Woof!

GravatarThe Baltimore Sun reported that Smith, 45, was arrested Tuesday night in an undercover sting at a downtown corner frequented by prostitutes.

When pressed for comment the prostitutes declined to offer their views of Smith's arrest. "Professional courtesy" says one unnamed woman in a low white halter who refused to give her name. "We would swap stories, pass suggestions, back and fourth, like, you know, consultants" said another who would only give Angelcakes for her name.

GravatarFrom Drudge at the top of the page:

I see they're still sticking to their 'we think that Nightline is trying to score political points' story. Whuffie to them for consistency, I suppose.

GravatarProstitution is one the many vice crimes made MUCH worse by the moralists who insist on using the power of the government to enforce their notions right and wrong ... even though they themselves do not abide by them. Potheads and prostitution are undermining our values, so lets leave it to the black market and stuff our prisons with those we catch doing it, unless of course they are well connected (see Ashcroft's nephew for a good example).

GravatarI couldn't find a follow up news story. I don't know what happened to the charges.

Perhaps you can email the article to him and ask?
Atrios

Did it.

Good for you. Maybe being a lawyer has me hung up on trivialities like the presumption of innocence, but I'd like to know how this all turned out before I make a lot of noise about it. Granted, there's a good chance that he was able to make the whole thing go away without having to face trial or plead guilty, especially if it was a first offense, but I think that without a conviction or at least some documentation of what happened next, going overboard about the arrest would cross the line.

Some line. I think. Though obviously not the "What Would Bush's Flaks Do" line.

Gravatar"ABC RADIO MAKES FEED AVAILABLE TO LOCAL RADIO IN AFFECTED MARKETS. ST LOUIS RADIO KTRS WILL CLEAR TO AIR SIMULCAST... DEVELOPING..."

GravatarIf we can get this activist around Sinclair's sins, what could we do to the heathers?
Right now;
CNN; Williams trial
FAUX; Williams trial
MSNBC;Williams trial
CBSradio; Williams trial
Earlier, Michael Jackson.

GravatarAlso, evidently Spectre has said that bush shouldn't count on his vote.

Is this true? That's excellent. Means some repubs (those up for re-election) want to distance themselves from the Boy King!!!

GravatarDoes he like the street walkers cause they're nastier than call girls or because being a Republican he's cutting costs?

Gravatar"moral turpitude" for sure.. Oh yeah!

we are in moral danger here, revoke that licence.

I blame Clinton.

Gravatar"The Baltimore Sun reported that Smith, 45, was arrested Tuesday night in an undercover sting at a downtown corner frequented by prostitutes."

So, this could also mean male prostitutes.

Gravataris this the guy who is on
"the point" around 11:00
channel 45 out of baltimore?

GravatarThough obviously not the "What Would Bush's Flaks Do" line.

That's not a line, that's a black hole.

A.

GravatarThat is so awesome!

Gravatarsorry ot, but back to Iraq. May May be better:

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Volunteers hunting for bodies in Fallujah find a woman and her daughter in their home, killed in the siege but undiscovered for days. Chanting mourners bury two boys caught in the crossfire of a Baghdad gunfight. A morgue in Basra overflows with torn and burned bodies from a suicide bombing.

Victims -- young and old, women and men, insurgents and innocents -- have been piling up day by day, making April the deadliest month for Iraqis -- and Americans -- since the fall of Saddam Hussein a year ago.

Official and complete death counts for Iraqis nationwide are unavailable. But a count by The Associated Press found that around 1,361 Iraqis were killed from April 1 to April 30 -- 10 times the figure of at least 136 U.S. troops who died during the same period...

GravatarCould this administration and its henchmen, like Smith, look any more like the 3d Reich? Hitler's advisors were criminals and thugs. Ok - I've committed the sin of sins, but my god -

GravatarHmmm. You in a band, girl?

I had to read the comments again to see what you were talking about! Hahaha.

No, but Tena was.

GravatarBush goons are far dumber than Hitler goons.

Gravatar"The Baltimore Sun reported that Smith, 45, was arrested Tuesday night in an undercover sting at a downtown corner frequented by prostitutes."

So, this could also mean male prostitutes.

GravatarNote: The Memory Hole link has the pictures the other outlets aren't running. See homepage link.

GravatarTena; Hitler was real; the 3rd Reich his invention, an evil genius.
Bush is NOT real, he's a puppet. The Bush administration the invention of hidden faces with guessed-at names.
Bush-the-puppet is a tragically stupid fool. Too inadequate to know, too inbred to care, manipulated by powerful, evil men.

GravatarHey, even wingers have needs--and since they marry the "good girls," they gotta go shopping for the dirty non-procreative stuff....

GravatarSinclair, not Smith. My brain is officially overloaded today - finally the outrage quotient has gone over the top and tipped my wits which are falling on the floor.

GravatarOh! Pittsburgh! Is there a Scaife connection?

Gravatar"Bush goons are far dumber than Hitler goons."
-PDK

I'm not sure of that. It is funny to see Bush's goons start turning on him much the same that Hitler's turned on him just before the end.

Could Bremer be the next Romel?

Gravatarapopkamama: i have a family member in apopka who has been drinking the Kool-Aid, what do you charge for deprogramming services?

GravatarOh no. I accidentally scratched a swastika to door of Smith's SUV.

GravatarOh, Snap! He was in the company car. So how can that be unrelated to company business? Some municipalities sieze vehicles of "johns". I wonder if that Benz ended up on the auction block...

Gravatarfamily values

GravatarSinclair issued a statement that Smith's arrest was unrelated to company business

Oh, well, then I'm sure the fact that he committed the crime in the company's Mercedes means we can rest assured the arrest was unrelated to company business.

GravatarDammit! I accidentally submitted both of those stories to Drudge!

GravatarHelp, I've been HTML'd

"Oh shit! I accidentally cut and pasted this article into my e-mail client and sent it to David Smith's address dsmith@sbgnet.com!

GravatarForget the war, and the dead, the jury just found Jayson Williams not guilty of manslaughter. Coverage is on every cable newschannel.

GravatarThe moral hypocrisy of the far right is breathtaking. It will take Koppel about 40 minutes to read the names of the dead. How about Al Franken reading a list of names of these two-faced right wing a-holes who have been caught solicting, or with young boys and girls, or dressed like French maids while fondling a sheep. It would take him longer to read off the names than it would Koppel.

GravatarRiver Bend is really pissed about the prision pictures too. Click on homepage link below to see what the rest of the world is seeing. This story is at the top of Google News right now. The head of GitMo is taking over.

GravatarOh, Snap! He was in the company car. So how can that be unrelated to company business? Some municipalities sieze vehicles of "johns". I wonder if that Benz ended up on the auction block...

GravatarYou right Gonzo

One day Bush will die operating a power tool he doesn't know how to use.

I think he's thrilled to be President.

Born on third base, and he thinks he hit a triple.

GravatarJeezus, John Gillnitz, those pictures are horrendous. Someone speaking from Baghdad commented about the growing religious backlash because this was strictly forbidden. These assholes showed an appalling lack of respect for these people and Iraqis and the Arab world. He said that these pictures were going to even further inflame the situation. Is that possible?

Was it a good idea, really, to release them?

GravatarWas it a male or female prostitute. Not that I have anything against Mr. Sinclair paying for gay sex.

GravatarMaybe Bush is just a puppet, but the continuing revelations about the extent to which this administration has people like Smith and organizations like Sinclair doing its bidding is just flabbering my gast. It really is. I knew things were bad, but every single day there is a fresh hell.

I'm serious - has there ever been such a concerted propaganda effort by another administration? This is fucking unreal.

GravatarI'm not sure what the Iraqi prisoner outrage is about? It's only hazing. I hear Bush and Kerry had to do the same pyramid for the Skulls.

GravatarHmmmm...45 in '96 would make him 53 today. He's the right age. Wonder if he served in Vietnam or is just another (gulp) chickenhawk. I did a search for a bio and found nothing more than the info on his website about his business dealings. Maybe someone else could find something more.

GravatarHmmmm...45 in '96 would make him 53 today. He's the right age. Wonder if he served in Vietnam or is just another (gulp) chickenhawk. I did a search for a bio and found nothing more than the info on his website about his business dealings. Maybe someone else could find something more.

Gravataroj: would depend on where exactly in "downtown" he was caught. If it's "The Block" (area of Baltimore St. near the Inner Harbor containing adult shops and stripclubs), probably your run-of-the-mill female streetwalker. The male prostitutes more often frequent areas a mile or two north, especially around Wyman Park.

Gravatar"So, this could also mean male prostitutes."

No doubt. I'm thinking Howard "Sweetbuns" Kurtz, Wolf "The Tongue" Blitzer, and Mickey "The Goatboy" Kaus can give satisfy the needs of any aspiring media mogul.

GravatarSigh . . . .

Why am I no longer surprised when I find out these extremist political right wingers and faux moralists have such horrendous sexual or emotional pathology at work in their personal lives, which so often contradicts their public rhetoric? (e.g., Rush Limbaugh, Strom Thurmond, Jim Bakker, Bill Bennett, etc.)

Why am I no longer surprised?

Could it be that there is a correlation between their sick inner/private lives and their sick political points of view?

Could it just plain be that these people are walking examples of human pathology all the way around?

GravatarAnd, if you're a winger, there's nothing more exciting than performing a perverted sex act in the COMPANY CAR!

GravatarSo he was outsourcing aspects of his home operation, rather than his Sinclair (=sin + clear?) operation.

I wonder... if Clinton had met Monica on a corner outside the WH...

Gravatar...was arrested Tuesday night and charged with committing a perverted sex act...

What constitutes a 'perverted sex act'???

Just askin.

GravatarTena; Many older and wiser than I (like Helen) have suggested the republic has never been in such danger.

GravatarAtrios you crack me up!

What an asshole! Right down there with Bush's buddy Kennyboy!

Why do you hate America?

Hahaha

Gravatar"Regular customer?" So he was faithful, in his mercenary fashion...

Gravatargotta love it...good find atrios.

GravatarSinclair Broadcasting has taken a 6%hit on the NASDAQ this week since the start of this all. (See homepage link or below)

GravatarPie, all those pics were shown on 60 miutes II several days ago.

Gravatarpie - Consider that one of the people who is yukking it up with all these nude Iraqi prisoners is a woman. Can anyone imagine what that does to a Muslim man? My god - this kind of thing is just - I have no words.

Gravatar
Assuming that Sinclair felt it was in the public interest to discuss BJ's and the President of the US, surely discussing BJs and the president of Sinclair is equally of the publics' interest.
ponnyj

At least Clinton didn't have to pay for his BJ's....

Come to think about it, maybe that's why all those Repub losers hated him so much.... they couldn't stand the fact that Bill C. got for free what they have to pay big bucks for...

GravatarHey Glenview North

What do the Iraqis get when they pass the hazing? A free turkee?

$5 off on Iraqi shampoo?

GravatarSo one of Bush's many special interest donors likes whores? What next Atrios, Jacko updates?

GravatarThe Republicans strike again!
They're mired in their usual pigpen.
But their blowjobs don't count,
'Cause before they dismount,
They sound off with a rousing. "Amen!"

Gravatar"Dammit! I accidentally submitted both of those stories to Drudge!"

Drudge?

Drudge is, as it were, old hat. (no relation, I'm sure).

Wonkette is the new drudge. And, she's hot.

GravatarOlivier said:

The corner of Read and St. Paul streets is in the heart of Baltimore's gay neighborhood, which covers Read, Eager, and Chase streets on Charles and the adjacent few blocks.

Okay, I'm done mucking about.

GravatarIIRC, there was another big shot in the DC area in 1996, who was in a whole lot of trouble over oral sex.

David Smith, how does it feel to be as disreputable as Bill Clinton?

GravatarNit, I wondered if something like that would happen...

GravatarIn company property, while driving (you thought cell phones were bad). Is there a reason to give him a blink more mercy than a Dangerous Urban (meaning Negro) Hoodlum?

GravatarSinclair's website has an ethics code:
http://www.sbgi.net/business/code.shtml

This Code is intended to serve as a source of guiding principles for directors and employees. All are encouraged to bring questions about particular circumstances that may implicate one or more of the provisions of this Code to the attention of their supervisor or Department Head.

Anyone who violates the law, this Code or any other Corporation policy is subject to disciplinary action, up to and including discharge.

GravatarWell, now that this dirt has been dug up on him (the hooker and the possible insider trading) why don't we all have some fun with this dirt and throw it far and wide?

I'm serious.

Everyone, publicize this shit. Let's make it a team effort. Make this guy look bad, make Sinclair look bad, and make the Administration and Party these assholes support look bad.

Fuck 'em all.

Gravatardamn, you're good.

GravatarI wonder what his legally-binding wife said (assuming that he's heterosexual) when he told her?

Gravatar> So, this could also mean male prostitutes.

So is this what the "perverted" could mean?

GravatarThe cops who arrested Sinclair are the enemies of freedom.

GravatarMy goodness. Cluck. Cluck. Cluck.

They impeached a president for that, didn't they?

Seems like this guy should've at least lost his job, eh?

GravatarYou are just not going to believe this, a CNN poll shows that 35% of respondents were not upset about how the Iraqi prisoners were being treated...

http://www.cnn.com

GravatarYoshimi Pt. 2 "We need a good ol' fashioned conservative outing like back in the good ol' days."

Sounds like it should be a real "outing".

Men stand on corners looking for hookups too. Particularly those not old enough to get into a gay bar.

The article said he was: "charged with committing a perverted sex act". Prolly oral or oral/anal sex, rather than intercourse.

Johns picking up a female hooker don't usually do the "committing" right there on the corner or nearby.

More usual is men picking up men to do some c**ksucking. Any paying for it too.

These wingnuts quite often are into "boys", so I wouldn't rule that out. LMAO.

GravatarI have a very good friend who worked for WBFF (Fox 45 Baltimore) for years, as a sportscaster...

Gravatar"What do the Iraqis get when they pass the hazing? A free turkee?"

They are inducted into American Colonialism.

GravatarRead and St. Paul... that's Mt. Vernon, right?

GravatarJust sent David Smith an email per Old Hat's suggestion, with a pasted copy of the news stories from Atrios, and the suggestion that his reporters do a piece on this newsworthy item during the Nightline blackout.

GravatarSinclair hos low class. Bet Clear channels hos are high class.

Gravatarha ha ha ha ha ha ....(sniff)... ha ha ha haaaaa

GravatarIt makes me cry, this is so beautiful. Every now and then, we get concrete proof that God has a really fucking twisted sense of humor.

GravatarOT, but this is quite a story:

(CNN) -- A group of students at Florida State University is demanding that FSU's president ask Vice President Dick Cheney not to attack Sen. John Kerry or make a "political diatribe" Saturday when he delivers the school's commencement address.

Florida, no less. Cheney, you've done it again (Westminster). How the mighty have fallen.

GravatarThea,

It is interesting what The Street thinks of what Sinclair is doing. Investors usually know what constitutes a sound business decision. They also hate controversey. Too bad this isn't happening to NewsCorp too.

Gravataradding nothing to the discussion

OT (Israel!)

A commenter on Little Green "cry about graffitti while cheering on any racist act more violent than graffitti" Footballs has decided to seek sympathy for Israel with subjective, gut/sacrum-aimed non-arguments about physical beauty as the natural arbiter of superiority. As in contrast the Jewish dears, who look nothing like any JAPs (as in J.A.P., not Jap) we've ever seen (and yes, we have seen a few off the television), to the fat Pally hausfrau slugs.

Or, as wootlevitch ben-woot might put it,

kosher booties

GravatarJeeze, do you remember when those British citizens were finally released from Guantanamo Bay? They had stories of torture, physical and psychological. They were not believed.

GravatarEveryone, publicize this shit. Let's make it a team effort. Make this guy look bad, make Sinclair look bad, and make the Administration and Party these assholes support look bad.

Fuck 'em all.

Jeremiah,I couldn't agree with you more. Smith getting a BJ is no different than the way the far right and their agenda is trying to fuck around with our heads every day. However, public ridicule probably won't work on people like Smith, since you have to have some semblance of a moral core to be able to see yourself the way others see you That's what makes a jerk, the inability for introspection. The only thing that will work for these hypocritical cretins is a 2 by 4 upside the head.

GravatarAnyone know where the 800 block of Hillstead Drive in Timonium is?

GravatarAs much as I'd love this story to involve 12-year old rentboys...

Smith and Mary DiPaulo, 31, were charged with committing unnatural and perverted sex act.

Details, details, details.

GravatarSinclair Corporate Policy Today:

"Anyone who violates the law, this Code or any other Corporation policy is subject to disciplinary action, up to and including discharge."

oj 04.30.04 - 5:33 pm

Sinclair Corporate Policy 1996:

"Anyone who drives a company Mercedes is subject to mind-numbing, blow-job action, up to and including ejaculation."

GravatarSince when is oral sex either "unnatural" or "perverted"? And frankly, if someone (man or woman, of legal age, of course) wants to sell it on the street to a client who wants to buy it, what business is it of mine?

GravatarOT, but Bobbed Novak just put it succinctly; "...the Koppel program is nothing but anti-war propaganda..."
Now, just for a moment, what if it was?
Against the backdrop of the SCLM daily spin, perhaps a little fairness and balance is called for, eh?
Yeah, bub. It IS anti-war propaganda. So what? Do you think America can't "take it"?
Celebrating the victims of war becomes "anti-war propaganda".
Inherent in this crap is the notion that instead, we SHOULD be engaging in "pro-war" propaganda, that the "pro-war" position is naturally morally superior. And of course, we all SHOULD agree and not dissent or discuss.
The anti-Americanism of this crew continues to astound me. They are true enemies of libery.

GravatarThe best part is that the sex act apparently occurred *while* he was driving. That's pretty impressive. Not as good as some of the stories I've heard from a cop I know who used to work in the vice squad, though.

GravatarPie, a Dean-sized YYEEEAAAAH to your OT.

GravatarMapquest could find it. Timonium is about 3-4 miles north of Baltimore City.

I say that we find some group of whacked out left wing feminist protesters to picket this guy's house with signs saying things like, "Prostitution demeans women."

GravatarBorn on third base, and he thinks he hit a triple.

Actually, born on third base and he thinks he won the World Series.

GravatarOT, but I can't seem to find the link to the unofficial Daily Show archive. Anybody have it handy? TIA

GravatarPittsburgh. Baghdad. American Power. Naked men. Cops. Prisons. Naked men.

GravatarMaybe they can read the Baltimore Arrest Reports instead.

So what's your problem? I'm sure David Smith had a "discharge" - unless the cops interrupted him that is...

oink. is this sposed to be a stag club in here?

GravatarWe need some lawyer-types to hook us up with some criminal records. Does this qualify as a sex offense? If so, he'd be listed in his neighborhood as a sex offender, right? Wonder if he's at the same address....

GravatarThe best part is that the sex act apparently occurred *while* he was driving. That's pretty impressive.

I mean, I wonder how many times Sinclair Broadcasting played the "Dean scream" on their channel in the days following Iowa . . . . and in that case Dean didn't even do anything wrong.

GravatarDis, you must have missed Senator McCain's letter to Sinclair:

Your decision to deny your viewers an opportunity to be reminded of war's terrible costs, in all their heartbreaking detail, is a gross disservice to the public, and to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. It is, in short, sir, unpatriotic. I hope it meets with the public opprobrium it most certainly deserves.

GravatarSome body ought to send this stuff to Drudge as well.

GravatarI just sent the following letter to Mr. Smith. I can't wait for his reply.

Dear Mr. Smith,

I just saw that you were arrested for receiving oral sex from a prostitute in 1996. Now, that was about the same time Bill Clinton was receiving oral sex in the Oval Office. I don't know, not being in a Sinclair market, but I'm sure that you never sanctioned the call for impeachment stemming from Clinton's actions because that would be hypocrisy.

Perhaps you see it differently. I'd be interested in your response.

Oh, and did your company have to forfeit that Mercedes seeing as how it was used in criminal activity? No, probably not.

I'll think of you tonight while I'm watching Nightline. Remember, I'm not in a Sinclair market so I can make up my own mind, like an adult, what to watch and what not to watch.

Sincerely,

GravatarOooh:

Police said undercover Officer Gary Bowman, on a prostitution detail, was talking to DiPaulo about 9: 15 p.m. in a car at St. Paul and Read streets. She left the undercover car after telling Bowman that ``she had just seen her regular date driving in the area,'' according to court documents.

Police said DiPaulo ran across the street to a 1992 Mercedes, registered to Sinclair, and got in on the passenger side. Police followed the car onto the Jones Falls Expressway, where they said they witnessed the two engage in oral sex while Smith drove north.

Ahem.

GravatarSince when is oral sex either "unnatural" or "perverted"?

Generally, when its committed in public, I'd guess.

LMAO.

Gravatarwhile Smith drove north.

Sometimes the jokes just write themselves, don't they?

A.

GravatarOh damn, Old Hat. I had the same problem you did, but I accidentally e-mailed the story to Nightline.

GravatarAtrios, you rock! How on earth do you find this stuff? I am in awe.

Well at least he wasn't doing it while on the phone with a Senator [ /wingnut snark]

Gravatardepends on how good MLK Jr. bvd (not the now famous JFX) is treating people that day... it is a stright dump from mt. vernon to 395 (the glorified exit ramp leading only to 95)... with no traffic, we are talking a little over 5 minutes, with traffic... I have sat there for 20-30 minutes in 4th of july traffic. But there are shortcuts through the city... If you are looking at baltimore, I would highly recommend mt vernon.. only place closer to 95 is the inner harbour, and to be frank, mt. vernon is a _much_ cooler place (plus, you can find houses). There is one neighborhood right next to 395 that is mad expensive, but would be closer than either of the two (it is right across MLK from the rather less expensive SoWeBo.) No idea how the noise is there though... two stadiums right there.

If you are looking to commute from Balt. to DC, Penn Station is just north of Mt. vernon... I walk there in 5 minutes... cheap fares to get to DC on a monthly basis.

Just avoid Columbia, it is souless.

any other info needed? =]

GravatarHere's the amusing thing about Kosher Booties;

The worldwide Jewish Diaspora has no "home" for thousands of years, they have been scattered all over the place. Jews have no environmentally coded traits. Arguing about Jewish inherant beauty is idiocy, because they don't have any particular physical appearence. Jewishness is a more a religious than a racial characteristic. Unless! You claim that all Jews coincidentally still carry the environmental adaptations their Jewish ancestors carried when they were all in a similar enough environment to cause a noticable adaptation. And which environment would that have been...? Why, a close look at those Kosher Booties makes them look suspiciously Arabic. Say it isn't so! Say Little Green Willies aren't being pulled to the tune of people shaped by the same environment as dirty Iraqi's, Iranians, Saudi's etc! But unless the modern State of Israel is in entirely the wrong place, it most certianly is true!

Drug addicted alcholic in the white house who took over after it was vacated by a skirt chaser?
Again, what form of immoral or illegal activity would you prefer be going on in the Whitehouse? Gravatarjust called sinclair and actually got through to David Smith's office!!!
I dialed and dialed, most of the time getting busy signal, but finally got through...used the company directory, entered his name, and a lady answered, "David Smith's office!"

I just started reading the second news release that Atrios posted, "Did you know that on August 15th, 1996 The president of Baltimore-based Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., which owns the local Fox television affiliate, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with committing a perverted sex act in a company-owned Mercedes, city police said.

David Deniston Smith, 45, of the 800 block of Hillstead Drive in Timonium, who also is Sinclair's chief executive, was arrested in an undercover sting at Read and St. Paul streets, a downtown corner frequented by prostitutes, Baltimore police said yesterday.

Smith and Mary DiPaulo, 31, were charged with committing unnatural and perverted sex act."

As soon as I started reading, she started laughing her head off. I couldn't tell if she was laughing to try to act like she didn't care, or laughing because she sincerly found it funny. But I just kept reading. Finally she said, "Is that what you called to tell us?" To which I replied, "Yeah, that's something to talk about around the watercooler, isn't it?"

She said, "It certainly is, goodbye." I politely said goodbye and hung up.

OH MY GOD THAT WAS FUN!!!! Life's little pleasures...

Gravatarkei & yuri,

Of course you're right. How could I have thought otherwise?

GravatarMarry me, Tom P.

GravatarSo oral sex is perverted is it?? Jeez, and on a regular basis. And this is a person who is looked to, a pillar of the community no less.. wow! next thing you know we'll have a president caught indulging in perverted sex, oh no!

these are the guys who don't want to hear the names of the fallen soldiers, yeah, figures. Hey - another thought - lets support the troops by sending them prostitutes, eh? Oh wait who needs them? look at those memory hole sex/interrogation pictures... there you go..

what in the world is the world coming to?

GravatarShe said, "It certainly is, goodbye." I politely said goodbye and hung up.

GravatarMaybe the woman who answered the phone was David Smith's wife, you know, just stopping by to say hi to sweetums.

One can hope.

GravatarNo, I'm pretty sure he was arrested in Baltimore. Meaning, what he was doing wrong was in Baltimore.

David D. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Sinclair Broadcast Group, was arrested this week in his hometown of Baltimore...

GravatarAh, the confusing syntax of police reports: "Police followed the car onto the Jones Falls Expressway, where they said they witnessed the two engage in oral sex while Smith drove north."

Uh, if they were both engaged in oral sex, who was driving?

GravatarCan we at least pretend that Mary DiPaulo was a tranny?

GravatarSmith and Mary DiPaulo, 31, were charged with committing unnatural and perverted sex act.

Not for nothing, but doesn't any sex with a republican wack job qualify as a "perverted sex act?"

Just curious.

GravatarMy God, it was 1996 and he was driving a 1992 CAR!!!!

cheney_usa

Dick,

the 92 Mercedes is the Corporate Biatch Machine.

GravatarI haven't read all of the comments but I am disturbed that it is possible in Maryland (my native state) to be "charged with committing unnatural and perverted sex act" especially if that act is oral sex not some kind of sicko S&M or something.

Didn't the Supreme Court say something about that ? I mean I guess they couldn't nail him for soliciting prostitution since he and she didn't need to discuss what he had in mind. I would consider sex in public or reckless driving. Why didn't they publish his licence plate ? I see that I pull over given the risk that he might be distracted.

Still I think people have a right to engage in oral sex with consenting adults.

Free love for fascists too.

GravatarDoes anyone know where Ann Coulter was that night?

I know one way to make this fucker's life unbearable. Sinclair doesn't have a station here in the Chicago area where I live. For people who are saddled with a Sinclair station, find out who the sponsors of their local tv news shows are. Especially if it's a local business like a Bubba's Chicken Shack or Gloria Jean's Tanning Spa. Call the advertiser and tell them you will not patronize them because of where they place their commercials. Over time this will affect a drill rod like Smith and his merry band of moral lepers more than any sort of public ridicule.

GravatarSince when is oral sex either "unnatural" or "perverted"?

Generally, when its committed in public, I'd guess.

No - when it's committed with a Republican.

Gravatar... and where was Hugh Grant?

GravatarI love you, Atrios!!! I just sent that as a news tip to my local station, which is one of the eight affected by this decision not to air Nightline. Thanks!

Hopefully, it will give all in the newsroom a good chuckle. I am not automatically blaming them for what the higher ups are deciding. In fact, if I were a journalist by profession, this censorship would have raised my hackles sky high.

GravatarMary DiPaulo, 31, were charged with committing unnatural and perverted sex act.

GravatarColonel Jill Morgenthaler, speaking for central command, told the Guardian: "One contractor was originally included with six soldiers, accused for his treatment of the prisoners, but we had no jurisdiction over him. It was left up to the contractor on how to deal with him."
She did not specify the accusation facing the contractor, but according to several sources with detailed knowledge of the case, he raped an Iraqi inmate in his mid-teens.
Col Morgenthaler said the charges against the six soldiers included "indecent acts, for ordering detainees to publicly masturbate; maltreatment, for non-physical abuse, piling inmates into nude pyramids and taking pictures of them nude; battery, for shoving and stepping on detainees; dereliction of duty; and conspiracy to maltreat detainees".

One of the soldiers, Staff Sgt Chip Frederick is accused of posing in a photograph sitting on top of a detainee, committing an indecent act and with assault for striking detainees - and ordering detainees to strike each other.
He told CBS: "We had no support, no training whatsoever. And I kept asking my chain of command for certain things ... like rules and regulations."

His lawyer, Gary Myers, told the Guardian that Sgt Frederick had not had the opportunity to read the Geneva Conventions before being put on guard duty, a task he was not trained to perform.

Mr Myers said the role of the private contractors in Abu Ghraib are central to the case.
"We know that CACI and Titan corporations have provided interrogators and that they have in fact conducted interrogations on behalf of the US and have interacted the military police guards at the prison," he said.
"I think it creates a laissez faire environment that is completely inappropriate. If these individuals engaged in crimes against an Iraq national - who has jurisdiction over such a crime?"

Reagan upped the number of stations a network could own from 7 to 12 in the early '80's.

Gravatar If that turns out to be Kopinski, then I'm utterly speechless . . . . . does anybody know?

stoo, look at the thread about this down below. Someone posted a story which, I think, referred to this girl. She's 20. Her mother tried to make excuses for the whole thing.

GravatarMy question is, following Mr Smith's arrest, did Sinclair's local station, WBFF-TV (Fox 45) report this? I know, silly.

GravatarThere are a number of important unanswered questions here:

1) How much did he pay? I'm not asking this for the purposes of comparison shopping, really. I mean, it's $300 in Las Vegas, last I checked, and on the street near my house, it's about $150, or $75 if haggle and are willing to settle for some old, fat, toothless immigrant; and it costs more if you want to buy some crack, although, it's easy to get ripped off and end up with a hard-on and a bag of Tide, which can be quite embarrassing. But I think we should know how much money took place in this illegal transaction.

2) Was the prostitute a presidential intern? This is crucially important. As we know, this is a moral crime of the worst type -- worse than gambling away the family fortune in Atlantic City or flying your National Guard F-102 to Panama to pick up blow. Ken Starr might take an interest in this, if he's not occupied with other serious business, like, helping some cigarette company sell more Joe Camel gear to kids.

3) The most important question is, is Ted Koppel behind all this? Clearly, there is a huge media conspiracy against the people who own and operate the TV stations in this country. Maybe Ted even put that prostitute up to it, just to embarass the friends of this, the greatest administration ever. Ted's a wily old SOB. I wouldn't put anything past him.

4) I guess the most pressing question is, how does he manage to drive and get blown at the same time? I mean, everytime somebody, well, a friend of mine, has tried doing that, he says he always has trouble staying on the road. Clearly, this Sinclar exec has done this before, to have accumulated such Nascar-level experience. That, or astronaut training. Or maybe he's impotent and was just faking it? In that case, he could be not guilty and might even be due a refund.

GravatarChi Bob - Actually that was my point about Hitler - he seemed to draw pathological people to him and he placed them in positions of power. Same goddamned thing with this bunch. All the wack jobs in the country have flocked to this president and will support him regardless because he gives their fucked-up-ness a kind of perverted legitimacy.

GravatarArguing about Jewish inherant beauty is idiocy, because they don't have any particular physical appearence.

Well then, Mr. Nemesis, the same applies to the Arabs. If you go there, I guarandamntee you you can't tell most of the young Jewish women from the young Palestinian women. Or young men, for that matter -- or older people, for that matter.

GravatarYour Preznit Signs an Execurtive Order

And today I'm going to sign an executive order that will build on the No Child Left Behind Act. First, I want to thank the Tribal leaders who have been involved with the writing of this order. Secondly, an executive order is, when it's signed by the President, means something. At least it does when this President signs it.

GravatarSinclair responded to McCain as follows:

"[O]ur decision was based on a desire to stop the misuse of their sacrifice to support an anti-war position with which most, if not all, of these soldiers would not have agreed."

I wonder: Would Sinclair, then, have preempted any episode of "The O'Reilly Factor" in which O'Reilly assumed that all victims of 9/11 would have agreed with GWB's justifying his overseas military agressions in their name? After all, by Sinclair's apparent journalistic standards of preemption, he need learn of only one such dissenting relative of a victim before pulling the plug: "Based on published reports, we are aware of the spouse of one soldier who died in Iraq who opposes the reading of her husband's name to oppose our military action. We suspect she is not alone in this viewpoint."

Yes, of course I am thinking of Jeremy Glick, whose anti-Bush father died in the WTC, and who was famously told by O'Reilly on 2/4/03 to "shut up," before having his mike cut.

In the interests of journalistic integrity, I look forward to Sinclair Broadcasting Group's future preemption of the bulk of "The O'Reilly Factor" broacasts.

GravatarJust want to remind anyone who's thinking about taking a tour of the 800 block of whatever-the-street-was, that address was for 1996. Who knows where he lives today? If MD has similar resources to AZ where I live, it's possible the respective county has property info online (it's public info, you know). The computer database may not be searchable by name, but it may be searchable by street/block. In which case, checking out each home to see not only who currently owns it, but when it was last sold could be productive. OTOH, for the full story, an in-person visit to the County records office (on Monday?) would give you the whole story. THOSE records (probably microfiche) ought to be searchable by name in a big index.

Also: why on earth wasn't this guy charged with reckless driving, too?

ATRIOS: once again, I salute you. Your services are invaluable.

Gravatar"My question is, following Mr Smith's arrest, did Sinclair's local station, WBFF-TV (Fox 45) report this?"

--Of course not. It wasn't "in the public interest" to do so and would have only served the "political agenda" of getting Smith removed from his position at Sinclair.

--Next question.

"A security contractor killed in Iraq last week was once one of South Africa's most secret covert agents, his identity guarded so closely that even the Truth and Reconciliation Commission did not discover the extent of his involvement in apartheid's silent wars… In South Africa he joined the SA Defence Force's secret Project Barnacle, a precursor to the notorious Civil Co-operation Bureau (CCB) death squad… In 1985 he was involved in planning the now notorious SADF raid on Gaborone in which 14 people, including a five-year-old child, were killed." (Julian Rademeyer, Iraq victim was top-secret apartheid killer, the Sunday Times [of South Africa])
Gray Branfield, 55, admitted to being part of a death squad which gunned down Joe Gqabi, the ANC's chief representative and Umkhonto weSizwe operational head in Zimbabwe on July 31 1981. Gqabi was shot 19 times when three assassins ambushed him as he reversed down the driveway of his Harare home.

Whirlwind also gets paid a lot of Sinclair shareholder money to move Sinclair execs around.

GravatarCan Mickey Kaus account for his whereabouts that evening? Come to think of it, Dave Smith does look kind of goat-like if you squint.

GravatarUm... you do know there are many blonde, blue-eyed Jews, and also many swarthy, black-curly-haired Jews.

It has a great deal to do with where the people's families come from. Ashkenazi Jews, with long family ties to Eastern Europe, aren't that physically similar to Sephardic Jews, who have long family ties with the Mediterranean.

Jewishness is not a racial thing. It's an ethnic thing. You can become a Jew in a jiffy if you want to be converted. It's easy, it's fun, and you'll get more holidays to celebrate. Who could want more?

Gravatar"Well then, Mr. Nemesis, the same applies to the Arabs. If you go there, I guarandamntee you you can't tell most of the young Jewish women from the young Palestinian women. Or young men, for that matter -- or older people, for that matter."

My point exactly; A catch? Why, it's the best there is...

GravatarYou claim that all Jews coincidentally still carry the environmental adaptations their Jewish ancestors carried when they were all in a similar enough environment to cause a noticable adaptation

Who claimed this here? Who is "you"? I don't know who claimed this, other than you, but 55 years in one place living close together, might do it. Palestinians and Jews born in the region are very similar physically, if dress isn't a factor.

GravatarAnd today I'm going to sign an executive order that will build on the No Child Left Behind Act. First, I want to thank the Tribal leaders who have been involved with the writing of this order. Secondly, an executive order is, when it's signed by the President, means something. At least it does when this President signs it.

Holden, please tell me that was satire. Please. I can't take it anymore.

Gravatar(and just to make that clear, you can't state that Jews are horny without saying the same for Arabs... and that would spoil the LGF wankers fun. Bua ha ha!)

GravatarHe's a disgrace to Republicans!

My God, it was 1996 and he was driving a 1992 CAR!!!!

How could he show his face in public?

GravatarI just mentioned these articles on the Randi Rhodes show.

GravatarCould it possibly be? Does Lime Rickey have an evil twin? A deformed one at that?

There once was a Koppel named Ted,
Who dishonored our heroic dead,
To improve ratings he did show,
What we already know,
So nobody watched or heard what he said

GravatarZombiebirdhouse,
What did Rhodes say? Did she give him the other kind of tongue lashing?

GravatarWho broked the A-tree ohs?

GravatarFrom Old Hat's BBC link:

In a press conference, Sir Michael Jackson, Chief of the General Staff, said: "If proven, not only is such appalling conduct clearly unlawful but also contravenes the British Army's high standards of conduct."

We need to make up some new names.

GravatarIn the company owned Mercedes? At least Sinclair supports American companies.

GravatarStreaker... Kei & Yuri. Comment above. Sorry if it wasn't very clear.

I was simply pointing out the paradox inherant in claiming Jews are racially more sexy than Arabs. Either Jewishness is not a race, in which case there's no mechanism by which they can be biologically more attractive, or it is a race, in which case the same environment would have given all their neighbours the same 'sexiness'.

Gravatar"We know that CACI and Titan corporations have provided interrogators and that they have in fact conducted interrogations on behalf of the US and have interacted the military police guards at the prison," he said.

fyi: Titan is completing a merger with Lockheed Martin.

GravatarTo improve ratings he did show

Nothing says "Sweeps Month" gold like a somber roll call of 700+ fallen soldiers.

GravatarI have heard rumor that some of the people posting and lurking here are also going to be e-mailing copies of the Smith hooker story, off to each and every one of the individual news directors and/or reporters at each and every one of the newsrooms at each and every one of Sinclair's TV properties, coast-to-coast, regardless of whether or not they're ABC affilliates.

As many of the employees at these TV stations don't really share the extremist views of the brain trust of their ownership, and this would likely foment disrespect, albeit covert, for the authority of the people for whom they work... I feel that perhaps this would just be WRONG.

If you are currently mulling over that long list of stations (posted here somewhere), with this decidedly un-Christian intention, you might wish to think about what you're doing.

Then again, you may not. Let us know!

GravatarWhat's up with this thread?

GravatarYoshimi

She said why is it always the conservatives that get caught in the back of a mercedes with an ugly hooker.

GravatarYoshimi sez: "What's up with this thread?"

It's used to manufacture clothing?

Kitties like to play with it?

It's thinner than yarn?

GravatarPolice followed the car onto the Jones Falls Expressway, where they said they witnessed the two engage in oral sex while Smith drove north.

Forget the "unnatural sex act" bullshit, which likely 85% of the adult US population would be bustable on--how about charging him with reckless driving and depraved indifference for human life? What a moron!

GravatarI was talking to a reporter and then the Prez's limo went by and he ran off, "Oh, one of my regular customers!"

GravatarHmmm ... Senator McCain says Sinclair is "unpatriotic" ... now we learn about this ...

How about a letter writing campaign to get Bushco to return Sinclair's campaign contributions?

GravatarRaed Jarrar's brother Khalid indicates that post-Saddam horror stories regarding Abu Ghraib have been floating around for some time now.

Quite frankly, I'm amazed the reaction to the confirmation of these stories hasn't been worse.

GravatarYoshimi sez: "What's up with this thread?"

It's used to manufacture clothing?

Kitties like to play with it?

It's thinner than yarn?

It also gets tangled up in the vacuum cleaner.

GravatarYou americans are strange folk.

What exactly constitutes a "perverted", not to mention "unnatural", sex act?

Especially since it seemed to have involved two consenting adults?

I'm all confused.

Descriptions in lurid detail (probably accompaigned by hi-res photographic images in a common format) are greatly appreciated.

Work with me here, people.

GravatarStoo -

I saw the 60 Minutes II broadcast this week (and was so extraordinarily disturbed by it I couldn't sleep that night).

While I'm not 100% certain, I think it is NOT TRUE that the Brig. Gen. was the war-criminal-babe in the photos. If I recall, the officer BG Kopinski was given supervision of ALL THE PRISONS being used to hold Iraqi detainees. If I'm right about this, in the segment on Tuesday they showed a clip from a much earlier CBS interview with her. If I'm remembering correctly, the war-criminal-babe in the photos was not named. She was the absolute creepiest part (to me) of this whole shameful business. Now we have equal opportunity for women to be war criminals.

Gravatar"WPGH preempts tonight's regularly scheduled Nightline broadcast to bring you breaking coverage of the David Deniston Smith kinky sex scandal"

GravatarWell, this proves his prostate is working great, which is all that matters. Eh, Ricky Vandal?

GravatarOh, BTW (OT, but somehow the prisoner abuse thing seems to be popular in this thread), anyone want to take a look at 10 USC 802(a)(10)-(12) and tell me how the US "contractors" working alongside the military in Iraq are not subject to military law?

GravatarJeeze, so now reading the names and showing the pictures of Americans killed in Iraq is showing disrespect? It really must suck to be a rightwinger. You have get rid of all principles, morals, brains, personality, common sense, compassion, patriotism, and decency. Basically you have to turn yourself into a slackjawed robotic little cult follower who stands around waiting for the Borg Queen to tell you what to do.

GravatarWhile I'm not 100% certain, I think it is NOT TRUE that the Brig. Gen. was the war-criminal-babe in the photos.
Kate

You are right, Kate. The BG has red or strawberry blonde hair, the other war criminal has dark hair.

The BG was in an earlier torture story broadcast on 60 Minutes.

GravatarSomeone pleae tell me how sucking isn't related to Sinclair Broadcasting's business.

" Last night a janitor found the following memo in a dumpster inside the headquarters of Sinclair Broadcast Group in Hunt Valley, Maryland. He showed it to his mother, who faxed it to Press Clips, with the humble suggestion that her son, an anti-war and legalization activist, would make an excellent candidate for a profile in the Voice. Because of the explosive nature of the purloined memo, we have decided to withhold the identity of the source.

ABC Nightline Smear [DRAFT PRESS RELEASE]

The Sinclair Broadcast Group announced on Thursday that it will censor the April 30 edition of Nightline, in which Ted Koppel plans to read aloud the names of U.S. servicemen and women killed in Iraq. We think Nightline's ratings stunt is the moral equivalent of terrorism. As we will elaborate in this weaselly and unsigned statement, our decision to snuff out Nightline is a patriotic gesture aimed to tranquilize taxpayers and prevent them from recognizing the boondoggle in Iraq. As Sinclair CEO and president David Smith likes to remind us, serving the public interest is not in our self-interest. "
end quote

"moral equivalent of terrorism"

GravatarAP does the body count

Volunteers hunting for bodies in Fallujah find a woman and her daughter in their home, killed in the siege but undiscovered for days.

But a count by The Associated Press found that around 1,361 Iraqis were killed from April 1 to April 30 -- 10 times the figure of at least 136 U.S. troops who died during the same period.

[snip]

``For this to be happening a year after Saddam fell, Iraqis are shocked,'' said Mahmoud Othman, a member of the U.S.-picked Governing Council.

``This shows that the United States cannot rule Iraqi properly. They thought they could do a better job than if they created an Iraqi government right from the start.''

[snip]

The April toll still falls short of the number of Iraqi deaths during the U.S. invasion. An AP survey of records from 60 of Iraq's 124 hospitals found that at least 3,240 civilians died from March 20, 2003, to April 20, 2003; the complete number during that period is sure to be significantly higher.

GravatarThanks, Holden, didn't have time to go ferret out the details. BTW - good story on California's condemnation of Diebold machines on CNN right now.

GravatarMeanwhile Cheney endorses Fox as the best source for news.

GravatarNewsHour just reported that some sponsors have pulled their ads for tonight's Nightline.

I'd love to know who they are.

GravatarKate - That woman is absolutely the most creepy thing to me, too. Every time I see one of those pictures I want to scream at that woman: "What the fuck have they done to you?! Tell me you weren't born this way."

GravatarAlso, isn't "cede control" a nice way of saying "bug out", or even "surrender"?

U.S. Marines Cede Control of Falluja to Iraqi Troops

Marines abandoned buildings and bulldozed earthworks in the southern and western neighborhoods and took down concertina wire even as the former general, Jasim Muhammad Saleh, drove into town wearing his old olive-green uniform, with hundreds of residents cheering him along the streets in a hero's welcome. The new Iraqi militia will be called the Falluja Brigade.

Military Families Speak Out, whose anti-war members have relatives or loved ones in the military, condemned Sinclair's decision, saying it was "dishonoring our troops and their families."

The group's Web site posted one member's letter of opposition.

"The Sinclair Broadcast group is trying to undermine the lives of our soldiers killed in Iraq. By censoring `Nightline' they want to hide the toll the war on Iraq is having on thousands of soldiers and their families, like mine," wrote Jane Bright of West Hills, Calif. (Her son, Sgt. Evan Ashcraft, was killed in July near Mosul, Iraq.)

"We should be honoring all the men and women who have served," said Ivan Medina, 22, of Hinesville, Ga., who was with the Army in Iraq and whose twin brother, Irving, died there. "My hat goes off to `Nightline."'

GravatarI support Sinclair's decision to not air Nightline. I also think that the names on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial should be replaced with poetry glorifying Nixon's decision to secretly invade Cambodia.

Gravatarpie - Sponsors are pulling their ads - are you shitting me? Are we just lost here, is there no way out of this incredible nightmare? I cannot fucking believe this shit - I just can't believe it.

GravatarMark Hyman had nothing but praise for McCain. Now what do you suppose he would have said about a dem senator who wrote a similar letter?

GravatarGeneral J.C. Christian, patriot - I sincerely hope that you have written or otherwise contacted Sinclair Broadcasting to let them know that they have your support.

Gravatarpie - Sponsors are pulling their ads - are you shitting me? Are we just lost here, is there no way out of this incredible nightmare? I cannot fucking believe this shit - I just can't believe it.

Fight back, people.

Watch Nightline tonight (there's no Daily Show on Fridays anyway).

Send them positive feedback.

Take note of their sponsors and send them positive feedback as well.

GravatarI support Sinclair's decision to not air Nightline. I also think that the names on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial should be replaced with poetry glorifying Nixon's decision to secretly invade Cambodia.

I concur, General. Likewise, I think that Gettysburg should be paved over and turned into a shopping mall. After all, what else did those men die for than to give their progeny the freedom to shop?

GravatarTena, I just consider them to be in the same class as Sinclair.

These people are unbelievable. I wonder if they did it before they heard about McCain's letter.

I know that people have been critical of Kerry's speech at Westminster and his policy re Iraq, but the crowd sure seemed to love it.

Very well received.

GravatarOr maybe he's impotent and was just faking it? In that case, he could be not guilty and might even be due a refund.
Dumbo

If this is true I don't think the evidence would stand up in court.

ba-dum

Sorry. Someone pitches, I gotta swing.

Gravatarbut... but... David Sinclair is a patriot!! He is not outsourcing his whoring to Thailand and its ambitious hookers, instead he is infusing the prostitute market with much needed cash!

GravatarOr maybe he's impotent and was just faking it? In that case, he could be not guilty and might even be due a refund.

If this is true I don't think the evidence would stand up in court.

Pretty stiff penal code in that state.

And it's one, two, three strikes, you're out...

GravatarRe: "unnatural and perverted"

Yes, that detail is a bit odd. As far as I know, Maryland still has two "sodomy" laws on the books, but (a) they were made unenforceable by court decisions in 1999 (why the laws were not entirely struck down, I'm not sure, but the ACLU says the state can't prosecute them now), and (b) oral sex was only illegal for same-sex couples; heterosexuals could only be "perverted" by engaging in anal sex... which is a lot harder to do while driving.

GravatarHallo everybody! Don't forget that tomorrow, May 1st, is Law Day in the US. Be sure to read the Presidential Proclamation tomorrow as well.

"Law Day is a day to reflect on our legal heritage and why the rule of law is the key to individual liberty."

Try not to choke on the absurdity of it all.

GravatarHow can 35% of CNN poll takers be not outraged by these Iraqi Prison photos???????????? Freepers scare me - I thought that resolute GOP = right on everything was just a bluff!

Yes, I assume there's a hardcore base of freepers, but 35%?!?!

I'M ASHAMED TO BE AN AMERICAN TODAY.

Gravatar sincerely hope that you have written or otherwise contacted Sinclair Broadcasting to let them know that they have your support.

I have indeed written Sinclair and thanked them for hiding our fallen children away so that Our Leader won't be shamed.

Gravatarpie - thanks for a ray of light - the info on how Kerry's speech was received. This has been a very depressing day overall.

GravatarFreep'd Poll

GravatarI don't normally like these dirty little stories. But a slimeball should expect to get slimed. I'm surprised he had this skeleton lurking in his closet. Thanks for doing such a good detective job for such an honorable cause.

GravatarYeah yeah and I heard Al Gore invented the internet.

you didn't hear it from him.

GravatarIf this is true I don't think the evidence would stand up in court.

Pretty stiff penal code in that state.

I heard he refused representation, claiming he knew how to get himself off.

GravatarIn solidarity with Jesus' General, I have written to Sinclair's Mark Hyman, to ask for Sinclair's support in calling attention to other troops-hating activities in Washington, DC, promoted by liberals, communists, and other terrorist-loving evil-doers who hate peace and freedom.

You see, there is a rather large Vietnam War "Memorial" near the Lincoln Memorial. It is actually a HOLE IN THE GROUND!!! Clearly, liberals are suggesting that we should throw our war dead in a hole. There is also a Korean War "Memorial" with statues of US soldiers colored in an unmanly blue hue. And this week, the World War II "Memorial" was opened.

I really don't understand the need for the latter - we've gone 60 years without such an obscenity, and the US has done just fine without it.

I encouraged Mr. Hyman and Sinclair to stand up for American patriotism and strength by using the awesome power of their television stations, to push for the demolishing of these war "memorials", which only serve to remind Americans of soldiers who disgracefully failed their country by dying, rather than by killing the enemy.

If it proves impossible to abolish these unpatriotic displays of sympathy for dead soldiers, then perhaps Sinclair can work for replacing the reminders of dead American soldiers on these 'memorials', with the names of all of America's enemies who were killed by the patriotic, successful American soldiers who did not fail their country by dying for it, but who instead killed as many of the enemy as possible.

GravatarI LOVE IT!!!!
Liberals have degenerated into conservatives just to bug Bush. Hey kids I thought sex was OK with you liberals, hookers were Ok, it was a deed of feminism. When blue, becomes yellow, you know a campaign is is utter disarray. Kerry lost!! Bush wins!! This is THE evidence.

By the way Atrios, we bot have a perverted mind today, because I just finished blogger about a black porn actor who has infected two porn actresses with the HIV virus in Los Angeles. I even Uploaded pics. Where is your picture of the hooker?

GravatarTena, I know we went through some tough times in this country, Viet Nam and Watergate were huge. But I've got to say that during the last three and a half years, I've felt like this country has been in the Twilight Zone.

GravatarRepublican values, huh, Atrios?
Party loyalty is mental fascism, and you are a fascist.

GravatarRepublican values, huh, Atrios?
Party loyalty is mental fascism, and you are a fascist.

GravatarGeneral - Ah, well done. Right up there with the rest of your heterosexual support of the other patriots in this great country.

GravatarI forgot to mention Clinton and Monica, so I do that now. NUFF SAID!!!

GravatarHey! Was he married at the time?

GravatarHey kids I thought sex was OK with you liberals, hookers were Ok, it was a deed of feminism.

You fucking asshole. That is the stupidest thing you have ever said, and man, you've spewed some whoppers.

GravatarRicky,

Why did you think it was important to identify the porn actor as being black? You didn't identify the race of the two female porn actors. Are you trying to play on the old racist fears about black men "ruining" white women?

Gravatarscott orrell, poor boy. Somewhere in your body, you must have a sense of humor.

Gravatarhe he...you said "orrell."

Gravatar"Why did you think it was important to identify the porn actor as being black?"

Because this little punk is a racist.
I'm surprised he just doesn't go ahead and use the "N" word.

Gravatarpie - It's been said and said and said, but I never imagined that I would see anything like what has happened here since Clinton ran the first time. It started then - with the unbelievable smears and all the work to destroy him and went through the impeachment to a stolen election and now we are in the midst of the unravelling of everything I always believed this country is and stands for.

GravatarOk I'm voting for Bush but this is just hilarious. What an ass. It's stupid to object to what Nightline's doing in the first place.

GravatarOh, I can't even be assed to post Ricky's "thoughts" onto his own blog to mock them today... Why bother, they don't even make any internal sense any more!

GravatarI don't see what this has to do with the
political issue of partisan supression of the news by a media organization.

Remind me again how this works --

It's reprehensible when the Republicans stoop to irrelevant sex-scandal mongering for political gain (Clinton/Lewinski); but it's well-merited payback time when liberals
(like me) can out the personal failings of a "conservative" whose unrelated policies we find odious.

did I miss something?

GravatarSomeone did a traceroute on that fucker Ricky Vandal's IP a while back and discovered his ISP is in Austria. He also uses European spelling conventions and lists prices for the shit he sells on his website using commas as separators, such as "$15,99."

Bottom line, I wouldn't be surprised if this 15 year old Hitler Youth pigfucker's grandparents were rounding up Jews and Gypsies and shoving them into cattelcars.

Fuck you, you Nazi little shit. Go huff gasoline in the alps or whatever the hell it is you do when you're not jerking off to Mandingo porn or whatever it is that winds your clock.

GravatarI happen to agree with Janeane Garofalo - supporting Bush at this point, with all that has been revealed about his lies and his ineptness is a character flaw, FredGarvin.

GravatarBut I've got to say that during the last three and a half years, I've felt like this country has been in the Twilight Zone.

"Little Shop of Horrors" is what keeps coming to mind.

The original Jack Nicholson movie...

GravatarGo vote! NOW!

Do you agree with "Nightline's" decision to read all the names of the war dead?

Yes   84%
No 16%

Total: 1819 votes

GravatarIt's reprehensible when the Republicans stoop to irrelevant sex-scandal mongering for political gain (Clinton/Lewinski); but it's well-merited payback time when liberals

It called "pointing out blatant hipocrisy from a supposedly upstanding Christian man who thinks he has the moral clout to decide what other adults can and cannot watch on teevee."

GravatarMark Hyman had nothing but praise for McCain. Now what do you suppose he would have said about a dem senator who wrote a similar letter?

So let's try to arrive at a day when we won't care what shitheads like this have to say.

Gravatardid I miss something?

Guess so.

GravatarI'm convinced that Ricky V. is one of our regular posters doing a bit of performance art. I like it. And he posts boobs.

GravatarIt really must suck to be a rightwinger. You have get rid of all principles, morals, brains, personality, common sense, compassion, patriotism, and decency. Basically you have to turn yourself into a slackjawed robotic little cult follower who stands around waiting for the Borg Queen to tell you what to do.

Before the airing of the 60 minutes II show, I read the thread at FR - About 70 comments all basically calling Rather a traitor, this hurts the troops, these prisoners deserve it, etc.

Today I read the FR thread about Bush condeming the treatment of the prisoners and saying "I didn't like it one bit". About 90% of the 90 comments agreed this was wrong and the people that did it should be punished.

So yes, robotic little cult followers. Since Bush condemned it, so should they. Goebbels would be proud of the FR groupthink.

Gravatarpie,
I don't find any of the things I read about what they did (adultery, solicitation) funny. I also don't like being associated with it because I share a political pursuasion. But I come here looking for responsible political discourse, and, sadly, I am in the wrong place. My apologies.

Gravatarwhen right-wingers admit that persecuting and impeaching Clinton for his sex life was wrong, and ...

...when they quit insinuating that liberals are sexual degenerates who want to teach children how to be gay...

...when they get off their god-damned holier-than-thou hobbyhorse...

that's the day I'll stop pointing out their hypocrisy.

GravatarSo let's try to arrive at a day when we won't care what shitheads like this have to say.

Another Bruce, after November, these shitheads are going to have less influence.

Thank Zeus.

GravatarThe real kind. On his blog. Not like woot's. Though I like woot's boobies too. And Lime Ricky rocks.

GravatarBut I come here looking for responsible political discourse, and, sadly, I am in the wrong place.

Try this little thing I call "not reading the thread if you don't like it." It's great.

GravatarThank god I only have get rodded by hired killers! If I lived in Baltimore, I might have to suck off Republicans! Oh, I believe I requested some poppers this morning, but have not received them. Although, I have received several well-hung mercenaries.

GravatarWhen you become like your enemy, your enemy has won.

Gravatarchris/tx:

Great before-and-after Freeper story. Do you have links for that thread? I'd love to see if anyone actually posted on BOTH sides of that argument!

Gravatarscott,

Please enlighten us. If you want to have a discussion, we will welcome an actual point. Not a criticism of the fun we're having. A point.

So make one, will you, scottie.?

GravatarWhen you become like your enemy, your enemy has won.

Well, I haven't. I'm having a good time here. Too bad for you.

GravatarTena,
I know you're upset today, and I know that in the past you've tried to hold on to a vision of American values that transcends this nightmare. Please keep holding on, it's all that will bring it to an end.

But, you must also realize that the thin, precious veneer of civilization is indeed very thin - witness those troglodytes at Abu Ghraib. And the roots of fascism, once they are rooted - and lord knows they are fully rooted now - run very deep. We won't pull up this noxious weed even if we manage to get rid of W and his immediate henchmen. These monsters will be with us for decades, doing violence and harm to everything this Republic once represented. Be prepared for a long, and what will often seem to be an unwinnable fight. Maybe we will win in the end, but there's no guarantee of that either.

GravatarEli--
Yes, that detail is a bit odd.

You're most probably right (at least I haven't tried it; and it seems to be a topological nightmare when I think about it).

We might have a winner here.

GravatarI have joined this thread late, but am concerned by the vulgar language and indifference to legal evidence. I think we should wait for facts before threatening an innocent man's reputation.

HAAAAAAAAAA! You tools! I'm such a pseudotroll. I had you dildos going for two nights in a row.

Gravatarpie - like that's going to happen when the whole reason they are here is because someone on a freeper site notified all of them about Atrios' post, no doubt.

They aren't looking for real political discourse, they are looking to be what they are -

GravatarOn Thursday night, Sinclair issued a statement that Smith's arrest was unrelated to company business and ''The company will continue to operate under the direction of its current management.''

guess the accountant said that they couldn't write off the fees as "Media Behavior and Technique Consultation" any more

Gravatar...but am concerned by the vulgar language and indifference to legal evidence

Another nutcase.

Hahahahahahaha.

GravatarPie,
I did make one. Party loyalty is mental fascism. Placing the headline "republican values" on an article about the disgusting actions of a couple of sick people reveals a mind unable to think outside of political parties and contributes to the scary times we live in.

GravatarFelix - I have tried to hold on - I've tried everything I know. I'm sure tomorrow I'll be ok again. I know it's a long fight - a lifetime's worth at least. The idea of this country is worth fighting for, too. Our ideals - liberal, progressive ideals - are worth fighting for. It's just so strange that we have to fight like this for an outlook that just sees the best in people and wants to work to promote the best that we can be.

GravatarThey aren't looking for real political discourse, they are looking to be what they are

Which is pathetically misinformed.

I always love the names they use though.

Little boyz.

GravatarWho's perfect?

Gravatar

When you become like your enemy, your enemy has won.

senahj, go pound sand. That's the kind of old-fashioned liberal loser talk that got this country in the mess it's in today. Liberals have spent so much time worried about democratic niceties that the Right have long since abandoned that we've forgotten what we're fighting for.

Not me, chumps. I'm willing to bash any conservative in any way possible to get the kind of progressive society we want. Better to beat them on the blog now, rather than in the streets later.

GravatarI did make one. Party loyalty is mental fascism--

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

GravatarTena,
I don't think I know what a freeper site is. I came here from buzzmachine.
But your comment is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.

GravatarWhere is the Governing Council? Where are they hiding now?

I want something done about it and I want it done publicly. I want those horrible soldiers who were responsible for this to be publicly punished and humiliated. I want them to be condemned and identified as the horrible people they are. I want their children and their children’s children to carry on the story of what was done for a long time- as long as those prisoners will carry along with them the humiliation and pain of what was done and as long as the memory of those pictures remains in Iraqi hearts and minds...

from riverbend

thanx john gillentz, american forces, winning hearts and minds. funny thing is parents of these kids are shocked, but explain it away as if - it's the pressure of the situation. i can't entirely disagree. this war right or wrong (wrong), we are there and without enough troops. critical juncture too. we got all the guns and bombs, fancy aircraft, but i wouldn't want to be a soldier on the ground right now. GEORGE BUSH is a FUCKED up MISERABLE FAILURE.

Gravatarsenahj, go pound sand. That's the kind of old-fashioned liberal loser talk that got this country in the mess it's in today. Liberals have spent so much time worried about democratic niceties that the Right have long since abandoned that we've forgotten what we're fighting for.

Damn straight, Brian G.

GravatarHave you seen the childhood pics on Ricky's other site? South Africa, perhaps. That would explain a lot.

GravatarPlacing the headline "republican values" on an article about the disgusting actions of a couple of sick people reveals a mind unable to think outside of political parties and contributes to the scary times we live in.

Okay, Scott, I'll take major issue with your adjective - sick.

Then I will turn your statement around. Think *democratic* and all the shit that was thrown at Clinton.

Sorry, honey. Welcome to the new reality.

Gravatar"She left the undercover car after telling Bowman that ``she had just seen her regular date driving in the area,'' according to court documents."

No wonder I can't get a date. I'm lookin ' in all the wrong places...

GravatarPlacing the headline "republican values" on an article about the disgusting actions of a couple of sick people reveals a mind unable to think outside of political parties and contributes to the scary times we live in.

No, you know what contibutes to the fucked up society we live in? Liberals constantly being polite and playing nice and trying to be above the fray while the thugs clean the cash register out. Hit them below the belt. These hipocrites, liars and thieves have done everything to deserve it. They have brought it upon themselves.

GravatarTena,
I don't think I know what a freeper site is. I came here from buzzmachine.
But your comment is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.

GravatarAgain.

Placing the headline "republican values" on an article about the disgusting actions of a couple of sick people reveals a mind unable to think outside of political parties and contributes to the scary times we live in.

Okay, Scott, I'll take major issue with your adjective - sick. It's not sick; it's normal behavior between two consenting adults.

Then I will turn your statement around. Think *democratic* and all the shit that was thrown at Clinton.

Sorry, honey. Welcome to the new reality.

Work with me here, people.

those sorts if pictures are illegal here, Felix, but we do have some old R. Crumb comix you can look at...

GravatarI use my real name, pie.
I used to have high hopes for the blogosphere, but they've turned into a bunch of circle jerks. Each group raging about the other, and only paying attention to their own ideas.
Thank you old hat and tena for your examples.

Gravatarvery Drudge-like.

GravatarTena--

I have tried to hold on - I've tried everything I know.

Hey, I was a bit tongue in cheek about it. I'm sure you'll be alright, judging be your appearance since I first noticed you around these parts.

I know a lot of sane people in the US, not at least through this interwebnet thing.

Gravatarscott - so glad I didn't disappoint.

Gravatarscott, why are you coming to this site for the first time and lecturing people about their comments? (Or isn't it the first time?) Maybe you'd be smarter to lurk, and if you don't like it here, you don't have to come back.

What say you, scott?

GravatarDon't let the door hit your ass on the way out, Scott.

GravatarIs David Smith available? I'm interested.

toodles

GravatarHere is a link to an official archive of the 1996 Smith sex arrest. For some reason some simpler search patterns I tried did not turn up the story.

GravatarFelix - This is just one of those days for me. It has really upset me to see those pictures and it has upset me deeply to know that Sinclair is censoring what people in their markets see and hear - it's so wrong. It isn't just the Nightline report, it's everything that we've learned the last day and a half about Sinclair. We have got to stop this rot or we are lost.

Gravatarit could only be funnier if it was hyman that was getting "serviced."

Gravatarthe search I did above just turnd up the 1 "1996 Smith sex" story. When I post the URL, then for some reason you get some extra year in review stories.

GravatarTena, you're ok by me, say some of the most sensible things. as for anyone upset about "Repug VAlues" get over it, move on, paybacks are a bitch.

GravatarWhy should a BJ be illegal, the GOP has been F---ING us for the last three years and nobody got charged, where's the justice dammit.
ABB&B!!!

Gravataroh yea, forgot to say while i could not care less who gets blowed, or not blowed, using the press as a tool of propaganda really pisses me off.

Gravatarpie,
Ok..I assumed that adultery was involved. I could be wrong. But what exactly is the point then of the headline. Pointing to one guy doing a bad thing (which you don't think is bad) and painting it as republican values? oh..it's all about hypocrisy. Republicans either have to condone prostitution or make sure that everyone that solicits can no longer be a member. Or maybe it was just an easy joke.
I would never assume that because Clinton was a philanderer that these were Democratic values. I don't have any books to sell. Or radio shows to be on.

Gravatarscott: I don't think I know what a freeper site is.

Lucky you. FYI, it's a very, very hard-right site.

www.freerepublic.com is where the name came from, but the term is also used to describe the frequenters of www.littlegreenfootballs.com and www.lucianne.com, among others.

GravatarWhy is this news?

Gravatar"Oh shit! I accidentally cut and pasted this article into my e-mail client and sent it to David Smith's address dsmith@sbgnet.com!"

Old Hat, I did exactly the same thing. In addition, I told him he's a filthy dirty scumbag to mess with Nightline.

GravatarSt. Paul and Read St. in Baltimore is in a neighborhood where horny men go to find "transvestitutes." The most surprising part of the story for me was the fact that he paid for oral sex from a woman. There are very, very few women in that area. The large majority of prostitution is performed by men dressed as women, as any Baltimorean will attest.

Feel free to make any implication you choose.

Gravatarcharley - My sentiments exactly.

I will just add that people who throw stones best not live in glass houses. That's why this is about Republican Values. Because one holier and more patriotic-than-thou Republican thug has been revealed to be a hypocrite. When people attempt to coerce people on the basis of morality or patriotism as a virtue, it behooves that person to be more than squeaky clean when it comes to morals and patriotism.

That's what this is about. Liberals don't try to tell people what they can and can't do sexually. That's why when one of these sanctimonious bastards gets caught, it is a matter for rejoicing here. Sod off, trolls.

Gravatarscott, all I can tell you is that you'd be better off lurking here, in order to get a better idea of what's going on.

Atrios has a certain *tone* that is (often)tongue-in-cheek.

Stick around, and you'll see what I mean.

Gravatarscott orrell ....give me a freaking break. Like you don't know that the republican party is the party that is constantly pushing so-called "family values"...remember Dan Quayle and the Murphy Brown fiasco? Jerry Farwell? Preserving marriage so that all of us queers don't co-opt it?
You need to get out more.

GravatarThat's what this is about. Liberals don't try to tell people what they can and can't do sexually. That's why when one of these sanctimonious bastards gets caught, it is a matter for rejoicing here. Sod off, trolls.

And, of course, Tena says it best.

Gravatar"one more sanctimonious Rethuglican"

GravatarThere's a David Smith on Maryland's sex offender registry, but not this guy.

I don't think prostitution and going to prostitutes should be a CRIMINAL offense, although as a Catholic I think it poses moral problems and is a major sin if someone is married.

But I think it poses a MAJOR hypocrisy problem for these thugs who drape themselves in cross and flag (when you know all they care about is Me and $).

Read the Baghdad Burning blog.
Every day.
Go back and read all the archives!
riverbendblog.blogspot.com
Tonight I plan to get drunk and read
her blog archives, starting from the beginning last year.
It has a great quality. Truth.
And another. Intelligence.
And another. Tremendous grace and beauty.
I'm in awe.
Most Americans are not fit to shine the shoes of many of the Iraqis we have murdered or brutalized.
I spit on the American flag again.
I'm getting out.

GravatarTena...brings to mind a line from a favorite play of mine, Greater Tuna, a satire on the right-wing Texas "family" mentality.....One of the characters says, in a sing-song voice, to another who is insulting someone, "Glass houses....".

Don't know if any of you have seen that but it is too funny.

GravatarTena,
So if we never tell anyone what they can't do, we could never be hypocrites. Fantastic. Are we liberals here or libertarians? Because the liberal in me says that solicitation is wrong no matter who is saying it. But the libertarian in me agrees with you, somewhat.

GravatarTom - I've seen Greater Tuna and a Tuna Christmas. Unfortunately, I've only seen Greater Tuna once, quite awhile ago. I don't remember it as well as Tuna Christmas because I've seen it a couple of times.

Gravatartom p,
Oh God. Not family values. How awful.

It occurs to me, at some point, I became a troll. I'll stop now. I guess that's the danger of too much blog reading.

GravatarWhat about the Shemail that was with Mr. Smith? Has anyone found himher? This is the person you want. $5 and an 8-ball. Where's my poppers?

Gravatarwhere's my poppers, that's a good one.

GravatarWhat the AP's description of Sinclair will hopefully read in the future:

Sinclair, a political supporter of the Bush administration and frequenter of $5 prostitute corners, is trying to curry favor with the White House to bolster chances of gaining changes in station ownership rules, McChesney alleged.

Gravatarsorry, cheapshot. If don't want me to care what Clinton did with his weener, than I'm not going to care what this guy did with his. Can't have it both ways, kids. Much as I love to see a self-righteous shit-bird get his just desserts.

GravatarPhilalethes - Little late (stepped out for dinner) Here are the two threads at FR regarding the 60 minutes piece on abusing prisoners:

gastrognome

Better duck gastrognome; variations of your point have come up a handful of times on this thread, each time being aggressively shot down as being "troll" commentary.

That's why I'm still ...

GravatarScott....oh no, I never meant you were a troll..... I really reserve that for unreasonable asses who are just trying to upset everyone. I was just being a little frustrated in my reply I guess.

Tena...Loved Christmas Tuna too, I actually have it at home. I was there (in Dallas) for the taping! Both are really becoming relevant again, what with the censorship, crazed christians, etc.

GravatarOkay - this one is for the "why should I care what he did if I didn't care about Clinton" crowd. We don't care that he did this - we care that republicans carry on as being this "family values" crowd - holier-than-thou types who think their sh*t don't stink. It's funny when they get caught with their pants down. That's all - just funny! Jeez - lighten up.

Gravatargastrognome:

I didn't really care about Clinton's BJ, and wouldn't care about this guy's either except he and his ilk pervert the public discourse by their fake moralistic vendettas. And in Clinton's case, spent $70 million of our tax dollars to do it, money that could have sent kids to college or gotten some poor families health care.

On the torture of Iraqi prisoners:
Sorry, I don't buy the "but we weren't trained" excuse. Plain and simple decency should have ruled out doing what they did. But I agree others are also to blame. We should prosecute the "contractors" as well. Then we should take the stink all the way up the command chain, back to the weasels of evil in the Oval Office.

GravatarScalia's oral arguments are going on, why is this distraction even being reported?

GravatarSorry--

Wrong thread.

---I agree. This is pretty tame. For instance these liberals call me a foreigner. That's all today. I've been here when they whipped themselves in a murderous rage, especially when someone mentions the word Nader. Some liberals are out of control. They want to rip people apart. Pretty weird stuff. I think it has something to do with being born in the city. I spent most of my youth on a farm in the South West. No wonder there is a huge divide between blue and red states.

GravatarFor instance these liberals call me a foreigner.

You. Ricky, had better stop using labels. You've come here and made the most outrageous comments.

Rip people apart? Anyone who comes here with an agenda is going to get called on it; the more outrageous it is, the worse the criticism.

Now, if you can't deal with that, then don't come here any more.

Are you the real Ricky Vandal or not? The one who loves Jenna Bush?

I don't like people who play games.

GravatarStarr, Bush, Dulles- Vincent and Elkins LLP. One big happy familee...

GravatarWAS THERE A CIGAR INVOLVED?????

GravatarFirst they'll read the names of the fallen, and then they are going to read the names of the fallen...I just know it.

If they show my picture on the tv, my ninth wife will divorce me.

Some get blown; some get blown up. What's the difference?

Gravatarfoilhatgrrl sez: How can 35% of CNN poll takers be not outraged by these Iraqi Prison photos???

I'm not "outraged" by those pictures. I knew all this was going to happen, I saw it all on March 20, 2003.

It's ugly and kinky to make a hooded victim stand on a box for ten hours with wires on his hands. But in the last eleven days of March 2003, the United States armed forces killed ten thousand young Iraqi draftees - ten thousand I guess because no one has even bothered to official counted the "enemy" dead. Let me say a word or two about that ten thousand (?), just for the Hell of it, because God knows no one else in this the West could ever be arsed to think of them.

The first three weeks of March last year, ten thousand (?) young conscripts from Karbala and Baghdad and Samarra, whose fault in life was only that they were born there, were marched at rifle-point by Saddam's officers into various trenches and bunkers. One night in an office far away (it was still daytime over there) a decision was made. Shortly thereafter, ten thousand (?) Iraqi conscripts, were suddenly, horribly, fried, dismembered, pierced, shredded, shock-waved to pulp, entombed, or some combination of the above.

Each of them died his own unique death. For many it was a painless instant. Other young men experienced a few shocked moments of pain and confusion, then darkness. For, who knows, a thousand of them? there were hours, maybe even days of mortal agony and fear while their smashed bodies struggled and failed, leaving their tortured souls to go wherever souls go...

That's what war is. That's what war is. That's what war is. That's what war is.

It's nameless boys - loving sons of loving mothers - crunched like Saltines or turned inside out by Coalition fuel-air bombs. And it's pay-me-by-the-hour private security guards, ex-soldiers with no other salable skills trying to stash away some security for their families, driving down a "safe road " and getting a surprise volley of AKs and RPGs, ending up hung off the bridge all charred.

It's seven hundred and twenty Old-Glory-draped caskets.

Damn it all! Doesn't anyone know history? and where's your imagination? Why does anybody need pictures to realize all this was happening?

GravatarSome of you have successfully turned atrios' score into a trollfest. Please restrain yourselves from feeding the shark.

Gravatar"That's what war is. That's what war is. That's what war is. That's what war is."

Not at all, butthead. Our soldiers fight under the UCMJ, and under that code of honor and justice, what these foolish GIs have done in Iraq is actionable, as in court martial.

Their careers in our military are over, and they have just finished diminishing whatever sacrifice they made for their country into a disgrace their country will have to add to the Coup that put them there in the first place.

Gravatar"Most Americans are not fit to shine the shoes of many of the Iraqis we have murdered or brutalized."

And quite a few Iraqis are despicable racists. Quite a few helped Hussein kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people. That is not to justify this illegal invasion; but your reaction is absurd.

"I spit on the American flag again.
I'm getting out.--Timaeus"

Then get the hell out, coward. We've already forgotten you.

People want to join the Coup by despising the country, they are the ones who are screwed up. The whole purpose of this kind of misuse of our military is to inspire hatred for our country.

So, you're a sucker TWICE, and you join Bushliar in his hatred of America, a country for whom many millions of soldiers have given their lives in honorable combat with real enemies.

GravatarPie - you posted this upstream:

"Mark Hyman had nothing but praise for McCain."

Well, hold on to your hat. He was interviewed for a NewsHour segment about Sinclair and the Nightline program. When asked what he had to say about Senator McCain's letter to Sinclair denouncing their move to repress as "unpatriotic" Hyman had this to say:

That Senator McCain's military service "was 25 years ago" and "people can have differing opinions."

Aside from the obvious point that people CANNOT have differing opinions on Sinclair television stations, HOW FUCKING INSULTING IS THAT TO MCCAIN??!?

So it was 25 years ago that he was shot down, injured, tortured, jailed in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton"...SO I GUESS IT DOESN'T COUNT!!!!

Meanwhile, Mr. Hyman, who is ever so expensively dressed and coiffed and I'm betting never saw a day of service in his life, gets to DEFINE PATRIOTISM for everyone else.

Sorry for the shouting. This really stinks.

Gravatarno, no, no, no, no, no, no!

How can anybody compare the Miss America pageant to Bush's aircraft landing and call them equals? I understand the media whore concept. I understand that some members of the media may be biased. But WTF? A Presidential photo-op is suddenly as important as a new Marriott Hotel?

I am not missing the point.

Somebody else is.

The clowns clown on.

Forgive me. I am not dramatic. But this article does...does what? Smell familiar?

And here is what of what i speak:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp...- 2004Apr30.html

Please tell me I misread the joint and shouldn't be so upset. Please tell me that I...I...am overeacting.

But you won't, as nothing has changed since 2000 when both parties were the same, and we didn't have a need for internationalism, or understanding of differing cultures.

I'm tired. My son is a year old.

I'm tired of the world that will become his.

GravatarGlad I got that last comment off my chest. But now for a bigger question: How do we keep the pressure on Sinclair?? They're trying to ride out the storm, they think all this (in their eyes) "hoopla" will all go away and settle down. They think their stock price will rise again soon. So what do we do to keep up the pressure? I want these guys to lose, and lose big. I want them to hurt in the only place it hurts them...the wallet. I want to see them sorry they ever decided to shoot for a media empire.

Any suggestions?? And no, I'm not interested in hearing from any trolls, gummint or otherwise, about anything that smacks in the least of violence. I'm talking about out-thinking these SOBs.

GravatarLaywers, Kate. Send in the Lawyers.

GravatarJust read some of that article linked above by "disgusted". That writer is an idiot! A stupid clueless idiot!

Gravatareveryonelovespete is right, disgusted while i respect your pseudonym and the reasons for it, you are over reacting. and i might agree that 2000 and 2004 don't look too different (actually they look quite a bit diff.) 2005 is gonna be real scary if bush is still president. everyone wants the world to get better. BUSH, just wants the world.

GravatarI did not mean that nothing has changed, for it has. But the article that I cited showed, I thought, that the press hasn't changed. I will vote Democratic to change the the keeper of the House. That is essential. But the press hasn't changed. They are still clowning. They are still speaking of minutia..a la Dowd and Peanut Butter. I am upset because and only because they still see the world in 2000's eyes. This is no longer Gore v. Bush, but rather Peace v. Indefinate War. Peanut Butter has nothing to do with my son's liveliehood (poor sp?).

GravatarThat this thread alone can reach 450+ posts totalling the sum posts of nearly half the total posts on all the remaining liberal-leftwing blobs is incredible.

Atrios you no longer have to worry about employment as a substitute gym teacher at some pathetic, godless, public school. Simply charge every person a nickle a post and you've got it made!!!
Pure free market capitalism if I ever saw it! Where's 'Just saying' when you need her?

MYOB'

GravatarThis is interesting to say the least. However, because it happened so long ago, I wonder how it is pertinent to today? Its merely digging up dirt on this guy.

I'm not condoning Smith's actions, but it would be more relevant if this happened more recently.

GravatarI just put some photos of our protest of WSYX in Columbus, Ohio up. Enjoy

GravatarThinking of repug values, I hope Sinclair used the blow job as a tax deduction. He was in company Mercedes on company bidness.

Prick.

GravatarI wrote: "Wonkette's hot"

Please don't give us the "youthful indescrection" defense. Fucking Republican. You guys went after Clinton for the most flimsy, ancient stuff, but when one of yours is truly exposed, you always have an excuse.

You can kiss my liberal ass.

Gravatar--
History had Rupert Murdoch jetting into Wash.,D.C., Jan.23 (+ or -), 1995,
for the first hours of face time with the newly set Newt in the House Speaker's Office.

Where Murdoch gave Newt $5 million dollars for a book to be named later.

Later, due to protest, Newtie kept $1 and banked the rest "to avoid the appearance blablabla."

Later, his name was on the ghostwritten "1945," (speculation of nazis winning),
which didn't sell, with 9 out of 10 returned to publisher.

And later, on the Jan., 1996 anniversary, Newt's quo pro for Murdoch's quid
was the 1996 Telecommunications Act which, as noted up the blog,
was responsible for 'this media consolidation [read: propaganda control] mess.'

GravatarJBLIII, you ROCK! Kudos for helping make this a news story.

GravatarKate

Mark Hyman was on O'Lielly. He was playing up his service as a reserve and saying the people in his unit that he talks too are not pleased to see the pictures. So that means that most people in the military are against seeing the pictures of dead soldiers. Doesn't it make one wonder that if Mark Hyman is in the reserves, why isn't he in Iraq?

GravatarI saw Nightline and anyone who thinks there was something wrong with that, is out of his or her fucking mind. "Huffing gasoline fumes" out of their mind.

It was respectful and tasteful and you know what? it made me forget, for a half hour or so, how much I hate George Bush and his warmongering. All I thought about was all the soldiers, from 18 to 54 years old. A good number of the names obviously belonged to soldiers who were not born and raised in the US.

GravatarJBL:

Thank you! Your actions are an inspiration, and it was great to see the photos. I hope you'll let us know somewhere here on Eschaton about where/when the newspaper articles on your protest can be found.

Erik:

Yes, it does make one wonder. I'm actually quite surprised because he certainly looked the pretty boy on the NewsHour. Couldn't imagine him getting his fingernails messed up. There must have been a special exemption for wealthy media barons who act as dittoheads for the policy idiocy of the week. But the key to his assertion is as you stated, "the people in his unit that he talks to". This guy is so unnerved by even the possibility of differing opinions that I'll bet he doesn't "talk to" folks who disagree with him, not if he can help it. That's why he can extrapolate and say it "means" that "most people" are against what he's against. Neat little circular logic.

Anonymous:

Send in the lawyers? OK, I'm intrigued. Is there a law which Sinclair has violated that I don't know about? Please tell me more!

GravatarOkay, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is up with Eschaton today? The lead post has upped and left for some not-discernible reason.

GravatarOh, problem solved.

GravatarTheaLogie, on my computer if I try to go back to Eschaton after looking at another site it brings up an earlier version, sometimes several days or even weeks old. Go figure. If I go back to my book marks and click on it the latest version comes up. Hitting refresh seems to do it too, sometimes.

GravatarBush Cancels Memorial Day. Too anti War. It will now be called End of Major Hostilites Day.

GravatarDo you suppose we could spin this to say that Clinton started going down on Monica because David Smith did? So now, whenever Republicans say that everything is bad because Clinton got a blow job in the White House, we can say, "Well, if David Smith hadn't gotten arrested for tha blow job, maybe it wouldn't have given Clinton ideas about unnatural sex?"

Just wondering...

Gravatar"TheaLogie, on my computer if I try to go back to Eschaton after looking at another site it brings up an earlier version"

There is a prominent site, okab (otherwise known as Bartcop) that has a stale link to atrios that brings up an old page. If you select, on the other hand, your link to the index page, then you get the fresh.

GravatarAnyone with more ideas on how to keep the pressure on Sinclair?? "Anonymous" said to bring in the lawyers, but no reply since I asked what that might mean. Perhaps anon hasn't been back to read here since.

I really think we need to think creatively about how to continue to make their life difficult. Still looking for ideas and suggestions...

Someone on another thread suggested notifying the SEC, to make sure that Sinclair includes their recent behavior, and the backlash, in their next filing.

Considering the effets of boycotts and negative publicity (John McCain called their actions unamerican... wow), they are obligated to make note of anything about the company that might cause the share price to drop, so that investors can be fully informed.

GravatarThanks, Seraphiel, that's at least a concrete action we can take. Unfortunately, I have zero literacy in terms of the stock market, whenever I even read articles about stock-related economic issues, my eyes glaze over. I wouldn't even know whom to contact at the SEC, or exactly how to word such a missive -- they'd probably know I was completely ignorant of such issues and dismiss me.

Anyone here who can carry out this notification to the SEC with some credibility? Surely we have someone here at Eschaton with this particular set of smarts...

GravatarI think perhaps that you have stooped to the level of the Republicans. I think the man can be criticized on his merits or lack thereof. What does his sex life, paid or not, have to do with anything, especially the war dead.

This is just the latest of Sinclair's abuses.

One of their executives routinely inserts conservatron editorials into the "news" broadcasts, for example, and now they deride Nightline for simply reading names and showing pictures.

These people pretend to have some sort of moral superiority over everyone else. Thus, they have opened the door for anyone to refute that position.

GravatarWhoa, I live in Maryland. And am I to believe that oral sex is considered a "perverted sex act" by Maryland law? Oh boy, I'm in trouble.

GravatarIf anyone is concerned about government-controlled press in other countries, maybe you should open your eyes to what is happening here?

GravatarThis should be sent to all of the companies that advertise on his stations. In addition, letters should be sent and calls made to the advertisers that sinclair stations are breaking the law and surely they don't want their products identified with breaking campaign laws.
