I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarPrémier!

GravatarNow if Miramax releases it, we know they hate America.

GravatarNow if Miramax releases it, we know they hate America.

GravatarDamn those cheese-eating surrender monkeys!

Obviously, the French hate freedom.

Gravatartraitor!

michael moore hates america,

I know cause there is a website with that name.
It must be true.

GravatarLike people are look at this as anything more than a political statement by the cheese eating surender monkeys?
If I were Moore, despite my own pride in the film, I would recognize that the French endorsement means nothing to the home folks in America.
If anything it might get the fence sitters to take notice, but the chances that this will increase the numbers of right-leaning persons who could possibly vote against Bush because of this movie is slim.
All this will do is harden the hearts of the fascists and bigots who are getting hard-ons over killing sand niggers. These people will never change their opinions since they'd rather have their southern cross jammed up their asses than embrace anything such as an open mind.

MYOB'
.

GravatarI know this because instapundit told me.

GravatarOver at FreeRepublic.com this news is most welcome I'm sure finally something to bitch about rather than explain away.

The combination of Hollywood & France, what could be better for the little trogs than to dis the frogs.

GravatarSo Fahrenheit 9/11 IS as good as Elephant? Have got to see it pronto!

GravatarUh, folks, this was an American-dominated jury that awarded the film. Quentin Tarantino was the head of the jury, and there were at least three other Americans in the very small body (8? 12? I forget) that handed the honors out.

GravatarHere's a thought, if 527 organizations aren't allowed to do commercials some set time before the election:

Assuming Moore's movie is released (July 4th or so) and earns strong box office cash flow. Highly political commercials against Bush could be made to fit as 'advertising' for his movie. Just a thought about a possible loophole that Moore might be able to exploit to diss Bush (hope it wouldn't be dismissed solely as radical leftism).

GravatarI kinda agree with MYOB. From other reviews of the movie I've partially heard I suspect this was a political award rather than an artistic award. But sometimes politics are so important that art has to play second violin for a while. Too bad that time is now. Art brings us closer to where we (humans) should all be headed, in my opinion.

Gravatarmichael moore hates america,

I know cause there is a website with that name.

Yes. And God hates figs.

GravatarWait for the summer Olympics in Athens. We're gonna get booed. Our athletes, our flag, our country is gonna get raspberries, derision and contempt from the rest of the world.

Which US network is planning to televise our national humiliation?

Thanks, Lieutenant AWOL. You asshole.

GravatarAttaturk: "...what could be better for the little trogs than to dis the frogs."

LOL - "little trogs" I love that.

Joshua - glad to hear it was mostly Americans on the panel of judges. Heh.

GravatarI knew that was going to happen. What better way to tell Bush to sit on it and spin? It was preordained.

In US terms, this isn't going to help--but given how few people pay attention to things overseas, it probably won't hurt, either.

GravatarI was aware of the multi-national jury...but do we think the little neanderthals freepers give a damn?

The intersection of retarded street & gullible avenue (aka "the Corner") will also, I predict, get 8 K-los; 5 Jonahs; and 3 Derbyshires out of this.

GravatarI think this is the greatest day in America since GWB was placed into office. I am smiling while I type.

GravatarI posted this on the last thread.Sorry to go OT.

Just got back in,and was listening to NPR.They were talking about a Supreme Court case called Renyolds v US.There is a debate about it's validity. The children of the victems of that case are petitioning the current bench to revisit the verdict.

Apparently 50 years ago the court was lied to and made a decision that has influenced later court cases with national security implications. It seems as tho everyhting that has national security implications is based on a flawed verdict and that we are being duped in every case that has N/S issues.

Are there any lawyers here that know anyhting about this issue? It sounded like we have been getting screwed for a couple generations and are paying a very heavy price today because of that decision.

GravatarwOOt probably sent them all pictures of Kerry boobies

GravatarI caught the live coverage of Moore's speech on IFC. He was very moved and got quite the ovation.

He mentioned the last time he was at an award show, "all hell broke loose." This meant a lot to him.

He also said that while he has no distributor in the United States, he had just gotten the word that they found a distributor for Albania. "Now every country in the world—expect one—will be able to see this movie."

Audience members and Michael Moore all seemed on the verge of tears. Very powerful award ceremony.

GravatarOT, but was just over at JMM reading about Chalabi's link to the Iranian Intelligence folks and got to wondering if he was involved with them back in the days of Iran-Contra or if there were connections from that end

Gravatar"But sometimes politics are so important that art has to play second violin for a while." SteveO

Coolest Cannes? 1968, when Godard and Truffant seized the festival hall in support of strikers, and there were no awards.

-

GravatarDamn typos. Moore said "except one", obviously.

Gravatarkherr is right, moore was ready to cry. everybody was hugging and half crying.
and from the gasp in the audience, it was not "pre-ordained". Spontaneous and wonderful.

Gravatarpreznit giv me turkee - The connection to the Iranian intelligence for Iran-Contra IIRC was the big time arms dealer at the time (Kassani?). Remember 60 minutes doing a piece on him in the early 90's.

GravatarThis makes for two years in a row that an Americna film Daily Variety loathes and despises has won the Palme D'Or.

So in addition to extending my congratualtions to Michael Moore I'd like to take this opportunity to let out a great big FUCK YOU to Peter Bart.

Gravatarchris/tx - Adnan Kashoggi is the arms dealer I think you mean.

Gravatari dont have a link, but i was reading the fort worth star telegram today and saw where chris matthews and some guy from time is being called before the plame gj......has anyone else seen
this?

GravatarDavid,

What was the other film?

GravatarTena - Thanks, been a lot of years since Iran-Contra.

GravatarPop quiz: How many of Michael Moore's detractors actually have a first-hand familiarity with his work?

(Hint: reading is hard!)
:p

GravatarThe other film was Elephant by Gus Van Sant.

Gravatarjammo - that was in the Dallas paper this morning. the other reporter is Matthew Cooper from Time. I'm not familiar with him at all.

GravatarThank you, David.

GravatarI don't see how the Bush family can keep this film from being shown without them, and their sycophants, looking like total asses.

Is it because they hate freedom?

GravatarGo read Frank Rich's review in the nyt - he makes no bones bones about Moore's polemicism, but finds this a great and moving film that aside from slamming the Bushies mendacities, turns out to be celebration of Heroic American troops.
Moore says of the volunteer army, "They serve so we don't have to. They offer to give up their lives so that we can be free. It is, remarkably, their gift to us. And all that they ask is that we never send them into harm's way unless it is absolutely necessary. Will they ever trust us again?"
Repugnants can spin their fucking wheels all they want - some or all of this will stick to them like shit on flies.
Hurrah for Micheal Moore!

Gravatarjammo,

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5033875/

Russert denies any information, NBC is fighting it.

Gravatardividedandconquered,

This sentiment is very Franken-esque.
Rethugs just don't understand what it is to be patriotic.

Blind obediance is certainly not patriotic.

GravatarThe French.

Reminds me, I've got to go out and see the Ethan Hawk/Julie Delpy sequel.

I haven't seen "Bowling for Columbine" but maybe I'll go see this new one just because it pisses off the right people.

Gravatarsmalfish - In re Reynolds.... Go over to the LA Times site and look for the recent two or so part investigation that they've just finished doing. It is apparent that the Reynolds case really doesnt provide much support for the secrecy that has been justified in its name.

GravatarThe surrender-prone Frenchies may have acquiesced to Moore this year but even THEY won't be able to avoid awarding next year's prestigious Palme d'Or to the Republican National Committee for this excellent comedy in the vein of "Dumb and Dumber."

Well, as long as you're able to suspend your disbelief and all...

GravatarPete M. - That was fucking hilarious - once you overlook the fact that it is a lie from start to finish.

GravatarPete: That cartoon is fa fa fukin retahded. At least there is some humor in the black hearts of those GOP jackels.

GravatarThey were talking about a Supreme Court case called Renyolds v US.

Smallfish,

GravatarThat Republican cartoon is beyond retarded.

The GOP is beyond saving. It has to be destroyed.

GravatarWowza!

Oh yes, I read the Reynolds case article, Anon, thanks for the repost, it's worth a look for the kinds of fishy things the government saw fit to do during the Cold War and after.

GravatarSteveO and Tena: That's precisely why the film is destined for a Palme d'Or. It's all those layers of complexity. You first watch it and think, "Hmmm...maybe those guys over at the RNC are actually okay. I mean they seem to have a pretty good sense of humor." And then you watch it again and realize, "Hmmm...they're not actually kidding." You're left with that sudden feeling that you're standing at the edge of a giant precipice and the rocks beneath you are giving way. It's like that hollow feeling you get after watching Chinatown or The Spanish Prisoner - when you realize that nothing was as it seemed.

GravatarPete - I kind of doubt that the cartoon is going to get a Palme d'Or, but I agree with your assessment otherwise.

GravatarWay to give the american censors a big French middle finger!

GravatarJust think - if Miramax had distributed it, they could've claimed their Palme D'Or as a triumph for all-American Hollywood over the cheese-eating surrender monkey two-bit moviemakers.

Instead, they're going to let Mikey take the credit. Morons.

GravatarI don't see how the Bush family can keep this film from being shown without them, and their sycophants, looking like total asses.

Well, that's never stopped them before, now, has it?
Seriously, I expect the RNC to pull the same shit on the film that they did over the 527s. Totally shameless and craven, but then Politics is like that, ennit?

GravatarWay to give the american censors a big French middle finger!

No California wine for me tonight.

GravatarMichael Eisner just got bitch slapped.

GravatarI used the "Send this cartoon to friends and family" feature to send copies to Ed Gillespie, Ann Wagner, and the other addresses on the "Contact Us" link with a litle note to check out this hilarious parody of Republican mendacity.

GravatarWhite House has said it won't be riled by Cannes result

"It's a free country, you can say what you like," they say. "Besides that, no comment."

GravatarThat cartoon was brilliant in its portrayal of George Bush as the Ubermensch, saving a nice white lady from falling off a precipice. He's dressed in PURPLE tights! Does Pat Robertson know about this? So many levels of irony and repressed sexuality here.

GravatarHere's the kicker:

The jury was not a French jury. This was an international jury dominated by Americans

ps Bush fell of his mountain bike in crawford when he heard the news.

Gravatar Wait for the summer Olympics in Athens. We're gonna get booed. Our athletes, our flag, our country is gonna get raspberries, derision and contempt from the rest of the world.

Which US network is planning to televise our national humiliation?

Thanks, Lieutenant AWOL. You asshole.
yankeedoodle

If I were an American Olympian this summer and had just one a race, I'd have a friend in the crowd hand me a Peace Flag and a "FUCK YOU BUSH!!!" Flag and do a lap with them.

GravatarUh, that's won not one.

GravatarMaybe one of the track stars could be prevailed upon to wear a 'Run Against Bush' T-shirt?

GravatarThe AP story, which most US newspapers will pick up, claims that critics view Fahrenheit 911 as inferior to Bowling for Columbine. Of course, every review I've read claimed just the reverse. But if the reporter acknowledged this, it would take some wind from the claim that the prize was only the result of its anti-Bush politics.

"While Fahrenheit 9/11 was well-received by Cannes audiences, many critics felt it was inferior to Moore's Academy Award-winning documentary Bowling for Columbine, which earned him a special prize at Cannes in 2002.

Some critics speculated that if Fahrenheit 9/11 won the top prize, it would be more for the film's politics than its cinematic value."

http://www.usatoday.com/life/mov...nes- moore_x.htm

GravatarThealogie, Miramax wants to distribute it. Parent company Disney is the evil entity preventing them.

The two guys trying to buy the film back from Disney are the heads of Miramax. They aren't the bad guys in this. Michael Eisner (a big bushie) is.

Just an FYI.

Gravatar" Michael Eisner (a big bushie) is."

Also a jew.

Gravatarflg, that's so? I see. My bad.

GravatarI clicked on the "Spendometer" on the side thinking, "Wow! They are REAL conservatives who want to show me that they are controlling spending. I'm impressed." When I got there they had this fake "John Kerry's taxes will cost you x millions of your hard earned tax dollars." Based on some BS calculations.
When you have to pervert even the very values you supposedly hold, it's just sad. I feel like it is often a debating excercise. "Okay, they just did something that goes against what we say we believe in. How can we figure out a way to justify it?"

GravatarIs that Quentin Tarantino standing behind MM in the photo?

Is he looking more like Waylan Flowers' Madame every day or what?

GravatarWell, now the conservabots are gonna have to try to find several thousand new ways of saying Moore is fat.

Awwwww.

Gravatardidn't he always?

GravatarWell, now the conservabots are gonna have to try to find several thousand new ways of saying Moore is fat.

Awwwww.
vaara

Yesterday Brian Lamb on c-span was pushing this line with the quite fat himself Robert Kagen. I'm expecting to have Candy C. on CNN saying it next Monday.

Gravatar"many critics felt it was inferior to Moore's Academy Award-winning documentary Bowling for Columbine, which earned him a special prize at Cannes in 2002."

There are thousands of people who would give their souls for a special prize at Cannes.
That's one difference between Moore and his right wing critics. They've sold their souls for much less. Value for money, in their cases.

GravatarI hope his sorry ass won this award on the merits of the film, rather than as a political statement.

Gravatar" Michael Eisner (a big bushie) is."

Also a jew.
Elsie Lacy and tillie

Less shit like this please ... Eisner's an ass because his pandering results in defacto censorship.

Most jews I know aren't assholes. Unlike people like you (who for some reason I'm going to assume is some white cracker-looking motherfucker!!!).

But you knew this, because you're clearly a troll who's trying to score a little gotcha moment with this bullshit, just to see if we libruls are so obviously anti-semitic that we let discourse like this pass.

Fuck you for even trying.

GravatarElsie, etc are original-purpose trolls: LGFfers are going to be able to refer to these "plants" and call Atrios a Jew-hater.

GravatarAlthough if they had called Eisner a "money-Jew", and differentiated him from "book-Jews", they would be following an internal conmvention and avoiding simple bigotry. It would still be odious outside of a specifically Jewish conversation where global Jew-hatred was beyond any of the members, though.

Gravatarwell charles johnson can wrap his little zionazi lips around my big hairy arab ballsack. ... we know you're out there reading charles (or one of your bitches is), and for what it's worth, I'm in LA, too!!!!!

we can have a playdate!!

Gravatarer ... apologies to everyone else reading ... one LGFer call to your house is enough to get one a wee bit riled ...

GravatarIt's a Bird..It's a Plane.. It's Stupor-man! As for Disney, I heartily recommend Carl Hiassen's "Team Rodent" to anyone whom has not had the pleasure..

GravatarWe need more Americans like Michael Moore. He is a national treasure. The French or the Americans, or whoever was on the jury that picked the winner did a good thing today. I've read many attacks on Michael Moore and they're all so, so boring and predictable. "You're a millionaire; how can you speak for the working class?" Oh God, can anyone think critically anymore?

GravatarFor the record, four of the nine jurors were American: Quentin Tarantino, Kathleen Turner, director Jerry Schatzberg, and novelist Edwidge Danticat.

The rest: Benoit Poelvoode, a Belgian actor; Peter von Bagh, a Finnish critic; Hong Kong director Tsui Hark; British actress Tilda Swinton -- and only one French citizen, Emanuelle Béart.

"I fully expect the Fox News Channel and other right-wing media to portray this as an award from the French," Moore said on stage.

GravatarIs there a transcript of Moore's Palme D'Or acceptance speech?

GravatarJust to set something straight. It's not "the French" that have awarded "Fahrenheit 9/11" this prize. The jury was composed of FOUR Americans (Quentin Tarantino being one of them), one Belgian, one Brit, one Finn, one director from Hong Kong, and only ONE Frenchwoman.

Here is the breakdown:
Quentin Tarantino – USA
Benoît Poelvoorde - Belgium
Emmanuele Beart - France
Jerry Schatzberg - USA
Kathleen Turner - USA
Tilda Swinton - UK
Edwidge Danticat - USA
Tsui Hark – Hong Kong
Peter Von Bagh - Finland
You can verify this for yourselves on The Official Cannes Website's Jury Page and with some Google searches.

And not all the French like to be associated with the surrendering Vichy government, just like not all Americans want to be associated with the current Bushco administration. So even if in jest, let it rest.

GravatarLooks like JD Lasica and I had the same idea!

GravatarAgreed, Augray.

Atrios, before a snarky comment that can serve to confuse -- and it did, see the first comments above -- please put it in context.

The context: an INTERNATIONAL jury, dominated by AMERICANS and chaired by one (HALF of the jury in the "COALITION of the willing") awarded the Palme D'Or to Moore's film. There was only ONE French person on the jury.

As if that mattered. But of course, the point is that Fox will spin it to be "french".

Gravatarwhy do a bunch of commie uropeein fouriners get to see an american movie befour me. its an american movie, it shoud be here first! what is it, sumthing bad about the prezinet? oh, well never mind. lets burn every copy!

Gravatari happened to hear some of the npr coverage of the award...linda worthheimer was quietley & "tastefully" appalled.

i hate npr!!!!

GravatarThis movie is gonna make A LOT of money.

It's also gonna wake up A LOT of people to how much the pictures they've been getting in the media are sanitized to protect Bush and American foreign policy.

It would be nice if I had a piece of the distribution rights. I could retire and then move to French Riviera . . . for real.

GravatarI really wish you'd take down the offensive slur "stupid frogs" on this link. The article doesn't criticize the French for screening the film. The jury wasn't French but decidedly international. Why on earth would you want to embrace the radical right's attacks on the French in this way? Even if you don't like Michael Moore, there's no feasible way you've seen the film. But a lot of very respectable critics, including a highly impressive Cannes jury have praised it for its aesthetics and not just for its politics. You may have thought that Moore tends to stimulate a good bit of anti-Americanism abroad. But do you think the photos of Abu Ghraib didn't? Please take down this slur and think twice about using such rhetoric in the future!
