Yeah, but did he sigh when he said it?
What color shirt was he wearing when he said it?
Did he look comfortable in his own skin when he said it?
I mean, let's maintain a sense of proportion

Regarding the accident, a Bush spokesman said, "Suffice it to say he wasn't whistling show tunes."
Oh, you mean Bush isn't like the fags who love musical theatre? How do the Bush whores manage to drag in this incredibly irrelevant point when Bush falls, looking like a cheerleader who can't make the football squad?

To grossly wrench a Jon Stewart idea over to this topic, if Gore had invaded Iraq, and given his troops permission to photograph a human pyramid of naked prisoners, and simply not let any of the troops stand next to it grinning and giving the "thumbs-up" sign, he would have outdone Bush. So, the bar is kind of low. But I get your point.

Have I just had a long day, or did that guy say "there is no room for dissent"?!?!?!?!??
Every once in awhile it's good to go back and take a look at contemporary political commentary of, say, a year or so back. Gives you insight as to the various mindsets before we knew what we know.
But were the "majority" actually pushing the stifling of dissent in general... OPENLY? How the hell do I not remember this?

The best part is Andy Sullivan saying:
I must say, as a former Gore-supporter who was appalled by his campaign lurch to the left, that there are few judgment calls I'm prouder of than having picked Bush over Gore two years ago. Now I'm beginning to thinkwe dodged a major catastrophe in world events.
Gore's speech was one no minimally decent politician could have delivered. It was entirely dishonest, cheap, low. It was utterly hollow. It was bereft of policy, of solutions, of constructive ideas, very nearly of facts--bereft of anything other than taunts and jibes and embarrassingly obvious lies. It was breathtakingly hypocritical, a naked political assault delivered in smarmy tones of moral condescension from a man pretending to be superior to mere politics. It was wretched. It was vile. It was contemptible. But I understate.

Let's not forget one of his better moments 12 years ago.
One of the most important questions in this campaign involves the
judgment of the candidates on foreign policy. The American people
know the world is full of unexpected surprises and dangers -- and as
a result they want to know whether or not a president can handle
these uncertainties, recognize unanticipated dangers, and realize
when national policy must be changed to reflect new realities. The
American people also want to know whether or not they can count on
their president to tell them the truth.
President Bush, in his handling of our policy toward Iraq, has failed
all these tests, and failed them badly. His poor judgment, moral
blindness and bungling policies led directly to a war that should
never have taken place.

I wish we had some mechanism to force certain people to eat crow. The frightening thing was that Neil Pollack's satire was so close to what the actual so-called pundits, etc. were saying! Even more frightening is that anybody with half a brain could have told these people that invading Iraq was a bad idea. But it was amazing how many people, even those who have since woken up to what a bad idea it was, just took the kool-aid they were given and drank it.
It truly frightens me - C+ Augustus can say all the right code-words and gets people worked up into a war to the point where they listen to neither evidence nor reason. And people wonder how the Holocaust happened?

"Every once in awhile it's good to go back and take a look at contemporary political commentary of, say, a year or so back. Gives you insight as to the various mindsets before we knew what we know."
Generally a good idea. We should also have some sort of mechanism to reward people who were right when so many others were wrong. Such an incentive will encourage better performance in the free market of ideas. Maybe Gore can get a special edition Nobel Prize in "I could have told you so"?
Other nominees: Hart and - was it Rudman? - for their (so-far still ignored if obligatorially mentioned) report on the terrorism threat and Walter Mondale for providing Reagan with the policies that enabled the latter to take credit for winning the cold war.
Can I move to the alternate universe where Mondale was elected president in 1984 and Hart in 1988?

Wow -- Democrats hate human life. Is it just me, or is that a tad strong?
I mean... I'm a Democrat, so naturally I despise plant life. I crush and burn plants whenever I can -- even eat their dead bodies, sometimes. Invertebrates, too -- what Democrat doesn't hate invertebrates? Amphibians -- don't get me started. Hate 'em. Did I mention fungii? Loathe them deeply, the parasites. Mammals -- sure, I hate most of them. As a Democrat, of course I get a kick out of swinging a kitten by its tail and smashing it's head against a wall. Great fun!
But to say Democrats hate human life -- well, if I didn't know better, I'd say thats a downright partisan statement.
