Dear bob,
US government actions - represent me. Actions by fuckheads around the world - not my responsibility. There were about 14,054 murders in the United States in the year 2002. Many were absolutely horrific. Almost 600 of the victims were under the age of 13. Where is your outrage about that?
I'm not going to pretend to be surprised that nasty things are happening to military and civilian personnel in the M.E., and nor am I going to post up an "expression of outrage" just to satisfy the jingoists who just 2 days ago were telling me that the news media was paying too much attention to this story.
Perhaps you can start your own blog where you can condemn every bad thing in the world, and prove yourself to be the Most OUtraged Person In The World.

Bob, just so you know, I did mention the guy getting his head cut off over at my page, and I'm as left as the come.
On the actual MM post...if you guys click through to Atrios's link, you should also check out the transcript that MMFA has of Rush's show where he responds to Harkin's bill calling for balance on the armed forces network. It's remarkably classic.
Now, I've told you, all these George Soros groups -- Take Over America, Take Back America, Media Matters for America, this new Lib Talk Radio Network -- this is all about Hillary Clinton. These groups are not businesses, they are not in the commercial business -- commercial sector to turn a profit. These are not groups in -- into analysis. They are action-oriented political groups seeking to advance the goals and ideas of the Democratic Party.
Make no mistake about it. And they're all in existence to help Hillary. They're all run, or controlled by, or influenced by the Clintonoids and their supporters. The Clintons have long, long, shall we say, had a problem with me. And it's that truth detector line. ... The fact is it is I who am and was the truth detector at -- when analyzing them. That's what they don't like. They want to blunt my effectiveness by using their allies in Congress and elsewhere to do what they can to silence me. It's raw politics, folks. It's the kind that dictators and the Clintons like. It's raw politics. This is what -- this is disguised as theories. Or what have you.
I didn't know the clintons had such pwoer over everthing. I assume this also means that the Clintons killed JFK, and it was really the Clintons saying that Iraq was an ally of Al Qaeda.
Anybody remember a little thing called the "Fairness Doctrine?" Required broadcasters who offered a political slant to give free air time to the opposing view point? Reagan got rid of it -- cause everyone knows opposing viewpoint are un-American. If Kerry wins, the first thing he should do is restore it.

I'm not relying on shit come election day but a paper ballot.
I worried, though. I'm really worried. In a lower-down thread there was a discusison about polls being faked to show higher-than-reality numbers for Little Boots. What I've been wondering about is how it is that anyone will actualy be voting for Nader this time around, and how they're garnering a percentage in the polls roughly equivalent to either the poll's margin of error, or Bush's lag behind Kerry. It doesn't make any sense at all. No way does Nader have that many people voting for him this election. Not after Miserable Failure's blood-drenched debacle of a term. NO WAY.
Diebold, I'm sure, would show that Nader stole the election from Kerry, who would lose by very small margin.
Demand a paper ballot!

Well, since the offending ad might run during the 60 Minutes program, I guess a case could be made.
Still, though, the balance to be struck isn't between the ad versus the content of the programming. It's the ads versus the other ads.
CBS seems to think that presenting one side of the political spectrum's advertising is OK, even as it has stated that it will not run ads from another side of the spectrum.

Here's my quick email to CBS:
I am writing to protest your policy on running advocacy ads on your network.
It is a gross violation of any notion of fairness that you will be running an anti-Clinton ad by a known GOP advocacy group, Citizens United. On top of that, Citizens United is headed by one of the most scurrilous Clinton-haters of the 90s, and current GOP operatives, David Bossie. You really should be ashamed of your association with the likes of Mr. Bossie.
If you are willing to run this ad, how can you justify not running the ads by MoveOn.org? It appears that CBS is making a conscious political decision to become a wing of the Republican Party. I will immediately begin writing to legislators demanding that you be treated as the partisan organization that you have now decided to become.

Molly, NYC is mostly right, but not quite. There are certainly people--journalists-- who work for CBS who can--but don't always-- do the right thing. But the advertising policy actually reflects the bias of CBS as a corporate entity more accurately than any breakdown of news they have or haven't reported.
Example: A Republican may own a lucrative bumper sticker factory that prints "Pro-Kerry" stickers for a good profit. Thad doesn't mean the owner will put one on his car.
Better example: Look at the gulf between the front page reporting and the editorial page content in the WSJ for the last three years.
What's reported v. what's believed can be mutually exclusive. So in the end the advertising policies tell the story I believe.
News happens--- The specific stories that have been mentioned(Clarke/Torture etc.) HAD to be reported, even if they went against CBS's natural bias. They were too sexy not to report, somebody was going to do it. Advertising is strictly a business deal--- and CBS has clearly excercised its conservative prejudice. Remember...
NEVER PRAISE THE MEDIA FOR MERELY DOING IT'S JOB ONCE IN THE BLUEST OF MOONS! CBS has been complicit in operation FUBAR from the beginning--- recent reportage isn't much more than rats running away from a sinking ship. Thank goodness they are running, but it's no time to start passing out cigars and talking about a job well done.

The Agonist -- now at http://scoop.agonist.org -- has a good pick-up today on a couple of the boy king's statements related to Iraq and Al Queda:
Bush March 19, 2003: Consistent with section 3(b) of the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 (Public Law 107-243), and based on information available to me, including that in the enclosed document, I determine that ... acting pursuant to the Constitution and Public Law 107-243 is consistent with the United States and other countries continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.

White House counsel questioned in leak probe
Grand jury investigates outing of covert CIA operative
The Associated Press
Updated: 6:02 p.m. ET June 18, 2004
WASHINGTON - The White House’s top lawyer was questioned by a federal grand jury Friday in the criminal investigation of who in the Bush administration leaked the name of a covert CIA operative last year.
White House counsel Alberto Gonzales underwent questioning at the federal courthouse. He was the latest in a string of administration officials to be asked about the unauthorized disclosure of the name of CIA operative Valerie Plame, wife of former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, to the news media.
“The president directed the White House to cooperate fully, and Judge Gonzales was just doing his part to cooperate,” said White House press secretary Scott McClellan, who also has gone before the grand jury.
Vice President Dick Cheney was recently questioned by investigators, and President Bush has indicated that he, too, expects to be questioned. Bush has consulted with a private attorney about the case, since the White House counsel can represent him only on official matters.
Disclosure of an undercover officer’s identity can be a federal crime.
Syndicated columnist Robert Novak revealed Plame’s work for the CIA a week after Wilson publicly criticized Bush’s claim that Iraq had tried to obtain uranium from the African nation of Niger.
Wilson had earlier been sent to Niger by the CIA to check out the allegation and concluded it was unfounded. Bush stated subsequently in his State of the Union address that Iraq had sought to buy uranium in Africa.
Wilson has said that revealing his wife’s name was an attempt to discredit him. In printing Plame’s name, Novak wrote that two administration officials said Wilson’s wife suggested sending him on the Niger trip.
Wilson has suggested in a book that the leaker was Lewis “Scooter” Libby, Cheney’s chief of staff.
The White House denies the claim and accuses Wilson of seeking to bolster the campaign of Democrat John Kerry, for whom he has acted as a foreign policy adviser.

As the article mentioned (and as we all observed when they denied MoveOn's ads) they have no problem running pro-Drug War ads from the ONDCP.
The work from 60 Minutes has been good, but the people leading the company are, it seems, irredeemably corrupt.

Clinton is now a private person, and the standards for libel for a "celebrity" only require that the libeler 'know' (intend) to state false facts.

What's at work here is exactly the same corporate dynamic fueling the Janet Jackson "outrage."
CBS' parent company, Viacom, heavily benefitted from the lifting of ownership caps for media conglomerates. They're still deep in payback. It's disgusting, but as someone said, 60 Minutes has been doing some pretty great work lately (though there's always the question of what took y'all so long), so there's a degree of balance now that there wasn't at the beginning of this year.
I'm outraged at the beheading. If Bush wasn't supporting the terrorist harboring regime in Saudi Arabia, and wasn't kissing Bandar's butt, the guy wouldn't have died. How's that? Why does this beheading benefit Bush?
Oh.
I forgot.

Following the link from Brock's site, here's what I sent them:
"I would like to express my disappointment with whomever is in charge of CBS's advertising policy as it relates to political advertising.
At issue is CBS's decision to air adverts by David Bossie's "Citizens United" organization in the wake of the network's previous statements regarding its rejection of ads by MoveOn.org and PETA.
CBS/Viacom rejected those ads based on their status as "advocacy ads" which were in alleged conflict with the Network's policy against "dealing with controversial issues of public importance." (Reuters, 29Jan04)
The decision to air the "advocacy ads" of one group while refusing to do so for another group reeks of blatant partisanship and only serves to underscore the downside of media consolidation.
I can say, unequivocally, that until either the "Citizen's United" ad is dropped or the policy regarding political advertisments is enforced in a decidedly more equitable fashion, i will devote none of the small portion of time i spend watching television to any CBS/Viacom networks and i will urge friends, co-workers, and family to follow suit."

Did Move On take advantage of a terrorist strike to revoke the freedoms that define our civilization? Did Move On thump on about Heimat and Birthright and Crusade and Patriotism to send our countrymen to their deaths?"
Oy. I'm on your side folks. But that doesn't mean I need to fellate Move On. I found their bizarre attempts to "get behind" an absurd Hollywood disaster movie rather revealing. At the very least, it suggested to me that someone high up in Move On is not very discerning when it comes to the difference between scientific facts and pure propaganda.
Just out of curiosity, if you go to Michael Moore's new movie and discover that it is filled with complete bullshit and exagerations (which it doesn't, by all accounts) about what the Bushies have done, would you still recommend that everyone sees it so they can educate themselves about this Administration?
I hope not. In that case, I hope that you would say that maybe people might want to go see the movie purely for entertainment reasons.
Move On SHOULD APOLOGIZE FOR THEIR STUPID PROMOTION OF THE MOVIE. Why wouldn't they? Apologizing is easy. It can be done in a few words. Painless. And it would show that they are an organization of SUBSTANCE and not merely a machine for spreading propoganda that liberals would find entertaining. It would restore the credibility they lost when the revealed that they obviously have nobody in their organization with serious scientific credentials who they take seriously.

from tomorrow's editorial in the Minn. Star-Tribune..
...If someone calls Gov. Tim Pawlenty's office, or even meets with the governor on occasion, they have "contacts" with him. But that does not establish that they have either "ties" to or a "relationship" with him.
This is how the Bush administration officials dissemble on issue after issue: They play word games. It's time they admitted the truth: Driven by a blindness to the world as it really is, they led the United States into a war it should not have waged, a war that made the United States less safe by dividing it from its allies and diverting its attention from the real war on terror.
"Fair enough, veritas. But Home Depot CEO Robert Nardelli has gone so far as to hold and host at least one major fundraiser for the boy king. I don't think HD's competitors have gone that far, so no $$ from me."
Nardelli did indeed hold such a fundraiser, at his $7 million home in the Buckhead section of Atlanta. Chimpy put in a personal appearance at the party and collected a cool $3.2 million for two hours of back-slapping, IIRC.
Support your local mom-and-pop hardware stores, if they still exist!
I understand that even though you found it necessary to ban previous "advocacy" ads for PETA and MoveOn.org, you now have accepted an ad to run during the 60 Minutes interview with former President Clinton that seeks to "clear the record" about Clinton's presidency. If this is not an advocacy ad, I don't know what is. First of all, former President Clinton is just that, a FORMER President. The group who has somehow gained your good graces to air their ad, when other groups sought to only do the same during the Super Bowl and were denied, is nothing but a right-wing advocacy group bent on further destroying any dialogue that might grow out of bipartisanship. My understanding is that their ad is to denigrate the Clinton administration and foister the notion the September 11th was ONLY the Clinton administration's fault. Nothing could be further from the truth, nothing is coming forth from the 9/11 Commission that even suggests that and running this ad would be nothing short of slanderous. Shame on CBS for pandering to the right-wing media machine that cries "foul" at anyone else exercising their First Amendment rights and then soils the fabric of our American right to dissent with their scurrulous fabrications and half-truths.

Leader who beheaded American is killed:
RIYADH (Reuters) - Al Qaeda militants in Saudi Arabia beheaded American hostage Paul Johnson Friday and their leader was then killed in a shootout with security forces as he tried to dispose of the body, Saudi officials said.
Abdulaziz al-Muqrin's group posted photographs of the 49-year-old aviation engineer's severed head on a Web site, six days after he was seized. The Saudi government had refused to free Islamist prisoners by a Friday deadline set by the cell.
Shortly afterwards, as Muqrin and two other top militants deposited the body in the capital Riyadh, they were surrounded by Saudi security men and gunned down, a security source said.
Muqrin, an angry young man driven by revenge and hatred for the United States and its Arab allies, was Saudi Arabia's most wanted al Qaeda leader. His death will be portrayed as a major blow to Saudi-born Osama bin Laden by the kingdom's rulers, once chided by their U.S. allies as being soft on terrorism.

Well, since the offending ad might run during the 60 Minutes program, I guess a case could be made.
Still, though, the balance to be struck isn't between the ad versus the content of the programming. It's the ads versus the other ads.
CBS seems to think that presenting one side of the political spectrum's advertising is OK, even as it has stated that it will not run ads from another side of the spectrum.
monica_nyc: You're right, it's a near thing; by November, CBS may seem like another Fox.
Clearly, though, CBS's ad department and 60 Minutes' producers aren't coming from the same place--possibly because this administration just oozes the kind of juicy corruption that's always been 60 Minutes' bread and butter.

I don't think that endorsing Day After was a mistake on MoveOn's part.
I remember the audience have a bang-up time with some of the little scenes in the movie... like when the fictious Preznit turns to his Cheney lookalike VP and asks him what he should do -- everyone laughs... when Mexico closed its borders everyone was clapping and hooting, and then again more clapping when the Cheney-ish guy personally apologized for ignoring calls to reduce greenhouse gases and promote alternative energy sources.

Monica says:
"I didn't think we liberals had to be all-business-all-science all the time, but whatever."
We don't. I thought Move On was too serious of an organization to imagine that a Hollywood disaster movie had anything whatsoever to do with the debate about how to stop polluting the earth without unfairly affecting the growth certain businesses and countries. The movie did absolutely nothing to chance the debate and, if anything, such movies only make the issues seem frivolous.
I don't care if people see the movie or not. I just don't want to see what is otherwise an important political organization making a mockery of itself.

"Marion decided the only way to effectively battle the British was with guerrilla tactics. Many of his officers and men questioned this style of fighting at first. To them, it wasn't honorable to strike, then retreat without giving a full fight to the English army. Eventually, they realized that this was a smart way to fight and was the best suited to their style of warfare.
Marion and his soldiers would concentrate their attacks on British supply camps and the supply lines themselves. They would rest during the day and march at night, quite often attacking at midnight. Marion was able to cut the supply lines linking the British occupied cities and chased and harassed various British leaders, most notably Colonel Banastre Tarleton.
Marion displayed a natural talent for strategy and tactics and was known for his personal bravery. He is considered by most to be the father of the U.S. Army Special Forces because of his unique innovations.
For example, scouts would always ride ahead to prevent ambushes. Some of them would hide in the top of tall trees and signal with shrill whistles. This was done at night when Marion would march and attack. If a bridge had to be crossed near an enemy post, blankets would be laid on the wooden planks to muffle the horses hoofs. A campfire was never used twice and when planning a raid, Marion kept the target to himself until the last moment.
This strategy bewildered the British who would chase after Marion into the swamps, only to loose him. The British complained that it was an unfair method of fighting a war and they felt that the Americans didn't play by the rules of "civilized warfare."

Just called the CBS national news desk in NYC just to see if I could leave a message about this. Got the number right off the Internet (212-975-4114). The woman began as nastily as possible, trying to dismiss me because she was not in advertising, so not responsible for this. No offer to transfer me to the 60 Minutes number, just basically fuck off. Well, she was so rude that after she transferred me to some computerized operator, I called her back to tell her how rude she is.
Her excuse: She has had a hard day and this number is nor for the public. She has to deal with people for 8 hours a day (waaaah).
Anyhoo, the 60 Minutes number (found later) is (212) 975-3247. And if you're bored, call WitchiePoo up and give her hell.

GWPDA - Thanks for your suggestion, and the good laugh it provided, too. There's too little laughing these days...
Well, I guess maybe Richard Cranium is gone, but I really, really want to read the comments at his site to find out what's creeping him out.
Can someone tell me, when I go to another blog that has Haloscan comments (and when the cursor sits on the comments, the info on the status bar says "JavaScript" and then displays a long number), I can't make the comments come up. You computer-savvy people, please tell me which setting I need to change. I've been playing with all the Java security settings I can find, but nothing so far seems to work.
I hope someone much more savvy than myself can help a poor non-techie out here. Thanks!

Richard Cranium -
I'm having trouble reading the comments on the website, I keep clicking and nothing happens. Don't know why.
Haloscan's weird like that sometimes. Shutdown your browser and try again. If you're running a wonderful Windows operating system, shutdown your computer then restart. Sometimes, the haloscan javascript seems to blow everything out of the water. (I don't want to hijack this thread with my inane posting - keep trying).

Kerry's Fuzzy Math
Yesterday we noted that John Kerry had claimed, in a Columbus, Ohio, speech, that more black Americans are in prison than in college. It turns out that KERRY LIED!!!! Blogger Clyde Middleton has the numbers (links below in PDF):
The US [Department of Justice] tells us the number of blacks incarcerated at mid-year 2002 (page 11, Table 13): 818,900 black men; 65,600 black women; total 884,500 blacks.
The US Census Bureau tells us the number of blacks in college during 2002: 802,000 black men; 1,476,000 black women; total 2,278,000 blacks.
It's true that among black men the number of prison inmates was slightly higher than the number of college students. But as the Statistical Assessment Service notes, this is a meaningless comparison, since "you can go to prison at any age, but are most likely to be in college between the ages of 18-24." A college-age black man, it turns out, is 2.5 times as likely to be in college as in prison. Also worth noting: A career criminal can easily end up spending decades of his life behind bars, while only the laziest student stays in college that long.

Look, I hate to be in a position of defending CBS, but I thought when they rejected MoveOn's ads, it was a rejection of running them during the Super Bowl specifically not an outright rejection of running them at all.
I seem to remember the network claiming at the time that the Super Bowl was special, a time when americans come together so they didn't want to run controversial ads or some bullshit. Maybe someone else can correct me. Consequently, has MoveOn tried to run ads on CBS since the Super Bowl and been rejected?

The comment on Richard Cranium's blog has a cut and paste of a May 18 comment (from elsewhere) that is attributed to a "Paul Johnson". Apparently there is reason to suspect it might be the same Paul Johnson who was killed today - I couldn't follow the reasoning, though.
The Mr. Johnson in the posting apparently feels torture is okay. Irony potential = high.

Anon, are you sure that Kerry wasn't referring to just black men in his speech, or that he intended to (or was supposed to if a speech writer screwed up). Attributing that to a lie is a strong accusation completely unsupported by the context you refer to. On top of which, having more black men in jail than in college is still quite a stark problem considering there are over 10 million white males in college but less than a million in jail. A 10:1 ratio vs. a 1:1 ratio is a really depressing statistic.

From Common Cause.
The New Yorker's expose, “Big Bird Flies Right,” documents several disturbing trends:
The decision by CPB to fund two programs -- one hosted by Tucker Carlson, who speaks for conservatives on CNN's “Crossfire,” and one moderated by Paul Gigot, editorial page editor of The Wall Street Journal -- at the same time that “NOW with Bill Moyers,” which receives no CPB funds, is cut from an hour to 30 minutes;
I absolutely agree about MoveOn's endorsement of the horrible movie. They might as well have endorsed Independence Day. However,
"It only feeds into the worst conservative perceptions of liberals"
Let me be loud and clear on this. FUCK how conservatives perceive liberals. They view me as scum, I view them as scum. Suits me fine.

I was in Arkansas when Clinton left office. To celebrate Bush's inauguration, some dildo took out a full-page ad in one of the larger state-wide newspapers saying, "Congratulations President Bush - SO LONG, BUBBA"

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) - A Saudi al-Qaida cell beheaded U.S. engineer Paul Johnson and in a swift retaliation, officials said security forces tracked down and killed the leader of the terrorist group in a shoot-out Friday.
Johnson, who was kidnapped last weekend, was the latest victim of an escalating campaign of violence against westerners that aims to drive foreign workers from the kingdom and undermine the Saudi royal family, hated by al-Qaida.
The death hours later of Abdulaziz al-Moqrin, the reputed leader of al-Qaida in the kingdom, was a coup for the Saudi government, which has been under intense pressure to halt a wave of attacks against westerners. In a video posted on the Internet on Tuesday, a hooded al-Moqrin held an assault rifle and shouted demands for the release of al-Qaida prisoners as a blindfolded Johnson sat in a chair.
Saudi forces killed four other al-Qaida militants in Friday's shootout, which came after a witness reported the licence plate number of a car from which the militants dumped Johnson's body and police then stopped the vehicle at a gas station,

How quickly guys like you and Bob forget that the majority of hijackers on 9/11 were Saudi nationals. Yeah, my guess is that the Saudis thought that, as long as they kept the money and support flowing, they'd be able to keep their bros in Al Queida under control (It's somewhat similar, I believe, to what the US expected when they were financing what would later become the Taliban when they were our proxies fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan). Bottom line: the Saudis had no problem with funding Al Queida as long as they continued to focus their actions against the West and Israel. Now, the media is telling us how the Saudis are gung-ho participants in the "War on Terrah" all because one American gets wasted? What total bullshit!

Good point, Samlex! The knuckledraggers who are the hardcore Clinton bashers wouldn't be caught dead watching "60 Minutes", so it really doesn't matter if the ads run. I think the honchos at CBS know this, but they'll run the ads because, quite frankly, they're not about to turn down a buck. Hell, they'll probably run the ads after Clinton's segment airs, so nobody's probably going to see it anyway. I say, fuck it! I watched that, too--Matt Lauer in rare form. Lauer had obviously gotten the talking points fax from the Right Wing Central and tried to pin Moore on "lies" in the movie. I thought Moore toasted him. Maybe someone else thought of this waaay up above, but can we get some money together and form a committee called the Citizens against Reagan? Then can we run an ad citing all the crimincal indictments under his watch, and have a kill meter on how many people were killed by his direct order?
Or can we now run the "Reagan movie" that they stopped airing earlier?
I agree with the people who say that as offensive as it may be, airing the ad won't matter. The people who hate Clinton already hate Clinton. Anyone who hasn't chosen sides after eleven solid years of Clinton-bashing isn't going to be swayed by a 60-second commercial.
When Clinton kicks off, I supppose they'll be obliged to run tons of negative ads about him during the week-long, 24-hour funeral coverage.

The nation's Roman Catholic bishops approved a statement on Friday on "Catholics in Political Life" that brands politicians who support abortion rights as "cooperating in evil" and leaves the door open for bishops to deny communion to such lawmakers.
The bishops, meeting outside Denver, stopped short of saying that those lawmakers should be forbidden to take communion. But they reminded all Catholics that they were not worthy to receive communion until they had examined their consciences, including their "fidelity to the moral teaching of the church in personal and public life."
Just have to keep on saying it: What about the death penalty? How is that not "cooperating in evil"?

The commission is getting all uppity:
The leaders of the Sept. 11 commission called on Vice President Dick Cheney on Friday to turn over any intelligence reports that would support the White House's insistence that there was a close relationship between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda.
The commission's chairman, Thomas H. Kean, and its vice chairman, Lee H. Hamilton, said they wanted to see any additional information in the administration's possession after Mr. Cheney, in a television interview on Thursday, was asked whether he knew things about Iraq's links to terrorists that the commission did not know.
"Probably," Mr. Cheney replied.

About the Saudis claim that they killed the highest level al Qaeda guy in Saudi Arabia: we better have a heavy dose of skepticism on this.
I don't remember all the details but previously there was some horrible crime against Americans in Saudi Arabia and the Saudi govt captured and executed "the perpetrators" without letting our FBI interview them. It is entirely possible that they just picked some guys to kill so they could say they settled the matter and go on their way.

Lee H. Hamilton, said they wanted to see any additional information in the administration's possession after Mr. Cheney, in a television interview on Thursday, was asked whether he knew things about Iraq's links to terrorists that the commission did not know.
I've heard some speculation Kerry might chose Hamilton as his VP. It's a good geographic fit.
And it would give him a chance to nail Cheney in the VP debates.

Exempli gratis:
Mr. Cheney has also continued to cite a disputed report that Mohamed Atta, a ringleader of the hijacking plot, met in April, 2001, in Prague with a senior Iraqi intelligence officer, raising the possibility of a direct tie between Iraq and the Sept. 11 attacks, a tie that the commission's staff report found no evidence to support.

I'm with LJ on The Day After Tomorrow. It's not a freakin' documentary, it's a science fiction popcorn movie! But it's still a good touchstone for conversation about global warming, and therefore, I think MoveOn's support was a good idea: Make sure people go out and see it, and if they like it, spread the word.
Who knows, maybe some people will come home from the theatre and look up global warming on that there inter-web thingie and find out that, while the effects aren't as extreme as those portrayed in the movie, they aren't small potatoes, either.
Al Gore's statement about the movie made it clear that the movie was fictional, but no more so than the Bush administration's policy (or lack thereof) on global warming.
Stunt Woman's need to introduce this off-topic, her utter obtuseness on this one MoveOn action with disregard to all the other wonderful things the organization does, leads me to the conclusion that she is either a troll or a damn fool.

That's right. For the last couple of weeks we had those in the administration saying there were links between Saddam and Al Queda which created a lot of media reaction. Now suddenly, Putin, who was paid, comes out and says there was. That will create a lot of media attention, then next will have WMDs rolled out. Too close to the election for them to be found to be planted or anything. Meanwhile, Americans will take the next choreographed step by believing if there was a link and we now have WMDs, Saddam would have given them to Al Queda. Al Queda hasn't used them, even before Saddam was toppled. When they're used soon, the administration will say that, see, Saddam gave them to the terrorists.

Child molestation and other abuses have been going on for centuries in the RCC. It's been basically a perk for being a Catholic priest. They want to blame gays like it's recent. Like we have the gay rights movement and suddenly we've got sexual child abuse both male and female. The Church hierarchy knows its false but they don't care. It's all about blaming others and covering their asses and donations for centuries of the shit. Which should make every Catholic take a long hard look at their belief system.

They won't win, if we define a victory of them as what they'd ultimately want: the whole world living like they imagined that people lived during Muhammad's times. They didn't live like that even then, of course.
This will not happen, but I fear that terrible bloodshed will take place in attempts to stop it unless we get adults in control again. But yes, getting adults in control seems unlikely right now, and in some ways what's going on in the U.S. is very much a similar movement to the AQ guys. They have lots of values in common, the extremists from various religions.

Okay. Well, this is scary (though not surprising)
"Bush told he is playing into Bin Laden's hands - Al-Qaida may 'reward' American president with strike aimed at keeping him in office, senior intelligence man says"
Julian Borger in Washington
Saturday June 19, 2004
The Guardian
Since I don't know how to tiny url I'll just past a few paragraphs:
A senior US intelligence official is about to publish a bitter condemnation of America's counter-terrorism policy, arguing that the west is losing the war against al-Qaida and that an "avaricious, premeditated, unprovoked" war in Iraq has played into Osama bin Laden's hands.
Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror, due out next month, dismisses two of the most frequent boasts of the Bush administration: that Bin Laden and al-Qaida are "on the run" and that the Iraq invasion has made America safer.
and
Imperial Hubris is the latest in a relentless stream of books attacking the administration in election year. Most of the earlier ones, however, were written by embittered former officials. This one is unprecedented in being the work of a serving official with nearly 20 years experience in counter-terrorism who is still part of the intelligence establishment.
The fact that he has been allowed to publish, albeit anonymously and without naming which agency he works for, may reflect the increasing frustration of senior intelligence officials at the course the administration has taken.
and
Anonymous does not try to veil his contempt for the Bush White House and its policies. His book describes the Iraq invasion as "an avaricious, premeditated, unprovoked war against a foe who posed no immediate threat but whose defeat did offer economic advantage.
In his view, the US missed its biggest chance to capture the al-Qaida leader at Tora Bora in the Afghan mountains in December 2001. Instead of sending large numbers of his own troops, General Tommy Franks relied on surrogates who proved to be unreliable.
"For my money, the game was over at Tora Bora," Anonymous said.
"What I think we're seeing in al-Qaida is a change of generation," he said."The people who are leading al-Qaida now seem a lot more professional group.
and
Anonymous, who published an analysis of al-Qaida last year called Through Our Enemies' Eyes, thinks it quite possible that another devastating strike against the US could come during the election campaign, not with the intention of changing the administration, as was the case in the Madrid bombing, but of keeping the same one in place.
"I'm very sure they can't have a better administration for them than the one they have now," he said.
"One way to keep the Republicans in power is to mount an attack that would rally the country around the president."
The whole link is on the Drudge Report.

What they have in common is sociopathy, which finds an outlet in extremist religion (or extremist anything, really). Dear Jennie,
Please take heart, you have not made any mistakes, none of us have. The really great thing about all this chaos is that it is in fact empowering all of us to look squarely at ourselves, something we've not had to do before. We each have an impact, globally.
We are challenged to think for ourselves, and to never again retreat from it. Unless we all do that, democracy is doomed to fail. But because of the inherent goodness of humanity, democracy can now flourish throughout the world, and it will.
The ordinary people are like weeds; you cannot control them, and you cannot deceive them into surrendering their beautiful humanity and love of Peace, and of each other.
We are family, and we pity those who still think Hard Power is wise governance.

Does anyone else find it kinda weird that within hours of that horrific murder, the Saudi Arabian police located and killed the prime suspect?
I saw a news report about that guy earlier today. It was American media, so it could be entirely fabricated, but they said that this guy they killed was released from a Saudi prison after 9/11, for "good behavior."
And then they lost him for the better part of 3 years, managing to find him on the very day he killed an American.

I am writing to complain about CBS's recent decision to air a commercial paid for by "Citizens United" (led by David N. Bossie), to air during '60 Minutes' while former president Clinton is being interviewed.
In refusing to run ads by MoveOn.org and PETA earlier this year, CBS explained that it does not run "advocacy advertising of any kind" or ads that deal with "controversial issues of pubic importance."
Bossie's blatantly anti-Clinton ad sure seems to be advocacy advertising, and will be controversial.
Please explain your glaring double standard, especially in light of your other recent decisions to air Bush administration advocacy ads re/ Medicare and Drug policy.
Please be aware that there are many, many people in this nation who are not "afraid" to hear views from "both sides of the aisle", and are also quite offended when media corporations decide to avoid controversy by censorship of content.
Yank the Bossie ad, or show it along with moveON's ad.
I wonder if MoveOn might not now have the basis for legal action against CBS? Seems clear to me that MoveOn could make a reasonable claim that CBS is responsible for damages resulting from the potential financial loss that comes with restricting their access to the airwaves given that the reason cited by CBS at the time has now been blown out of the water...by CBS.

I found the actual Michael Moore quote on the MSNBC website. It was better than I remembered. I was surprised it was on there, as they seem to have edited a lot out of the interview. After a republican talking points grilling by Matt Lauer, during which Moore had expressed his trust of the major media in this country, whcih tend to hide stories rather than break them, he turned to Lauer and said:
"You know I've been sitting here for like the last 20 minutes thinking, man, if he would have only asked Bush administration officials these kind of hard questions in the weeks leading up to the war, and then when the war started, maybe there wouldn't be a war. Because the American people, once given the truth, you know the old saying from Abraham Lincoln, give the people the facts and the Republic will be safe."

Re: MoveOn.Org and The Day After Tomorrow--if I recall correctly, they proposed having groups be present at the theaters showing the movie, esp'ly opening day, to hand out flyers explaining the actual science behind the hyped and overdramatized situations in the movie.
It seemed like a good idea to me, but I couldn't take part.
Use any chance we can to educate people to what greenhouse gases are doing to our planet. The possible weakening of the Great Conveyer (correct term? cauuse of the Gulf Stream, etc.) in the Atlantic could result in a fairly rapid (years, not days) and drastic change in the Northern Hemisphere's climate.

FWIW:
I just read on MediaMatters.org that CBS will be running an Anti-Clinton advertisment from an organization called Citizens United.
I was under the impression that it was CBS policy not to air advocacy ads that deal with controversial issues of public importance.
It was this rationale that was used to reject advertisments from organizations such as PETA and MoveOn.org.
I would hope that CBS would be fair and honest in its dealings with orgainzations such as Citizens United, and apply its policies equally across the board.
Or, has CBS changed its policy now to allow such advertisements?
If it is the latter, is CBS going to accept advertisments from PETA, MoveOn.org, and other like organizations? Or is your policy change only for Conservative organizations?
I hope to hear back from you with a clarification of your policy, so that I can be aware of it.

I had heard about MoveOn's efforts with the Day After Tomorrow, and I thought "What a totally stupid idea. I thought these guys were pros. Why would they bother attaching themselves to something so pigheadedly schlocky?" But a friend who is more optimistic and more motivated asked if I'd be interested in the flyering, and where I planned to see the movie. So I mentioned my idea of getting a small group together to go see it at the Drive-In, as a double feature with Van Helsing. I was convinced people would refuse the flyers, but I printed up about a hundred anyway. Between showings, they flew out of my hands. The Drive-In audience really loved the idea of getting something about the movie. With the few I had left after Van Helsing, which made the Day After look like a pretty good film, btw, I handed them to people as they drove away from the theatre. This required them to stop ,roll down a window, and lean out - far more effort than these pitiful flyers deserved. But man, the thanks I got was really astonishing. I think MoveOn is trying an outreach strategy - they have s very solid base of well-informed people with a bit of cash to spare, but they want to learn how to motivate the average American. I think the Day After campaign was practice. I think th Fahrenheit 9/11 is Plan B - and I am more involved in MoveOn's efforts with this film than before.
So I'm glad to help with flyering. However, as harsh as Moore is on Bush, he'll be harsh towards whoever's in power. Remember, this is the guy who claims that Clinton was far worse for the average working man/woman than Bush I or Reagan. But if MoveOn has learned how to take people's interests and focus them into political action, F 9/11 will be a far better opportunity, and I'm glad to see thm making the effort. As Stuntwoman has said, there is not a lot to be gained for MoveOn from this, except attention. And at this point, I think that's really the goal.
And I wanted to see Day After, though I knew it would be bad. MoveOn provided the impetus and coalition necessary to make the long trek out to he Drive-In, which I am certain was the best place in the country to see it.

Concerning ignoring the news about Johnson being beheaded by Al Q, Atrios says:
'US government actions - represent me. Actions by fuckheads around the world - not my responsibility.'
What utter bullshit. An American gets his head cut off and displayed on the net as a political statement by a group that also claims responsibility for 9/11. Reacting to this and what it reinforces about the enemy in this war we are in is not a concern of Atrios.
However, the three posts later is an illogical carping interpretation of the wording in a Post article.

my complaint to CBS:
RE: Citizen's United ad to air during Clinton interview
"The network simply does not accept any advocacy advertising of any kind," says CBS Executive Vice President Martin Franks.
CBS rejects ads dealing with "controversial issues of public importance."
If those are the stated reasons for not running MoveOn orgs advertisements during the Superbowl, then CBS better stick to its STATED principles. Airing ads by the republican ADVOCACY group Citizens United would assuredly violate said principles. As well you should know, that is if CBS’s reporters still have any journalistic integrity left within them, this group is obviously a republican front since it is headed by none other than David Bossie- a former Republican congressional aide, a political hatchet man, who in the past was tasked with attacking Clinton. No doubt, he has been assigned with those same duties now. If CBS airs Citizens United's ads, it will only prove that CBS is, to put it politely, hypocritical. Further, airing Citizens United's ads would prove that CBS is a hack republican pr organization. Thus, CBS’s broadcasting PRIVILEGES, which the American public so graciously bestows upon it, should then be revoked, for it would be patently clear that CBS broadcasting does not serve the greater public's interests, but merely represents the interests of the few.

WTH, here's my complaint to CBS:
This is just unbelievable. How do you justify showing this commercial after refusing to show the one by MoveOn.org during the Super Bowl?
The Citizens United website states this ad will be about how “President Clinton gutted defense and intelligence spending and was MIA for eight years while terrorists continuously attacked the United States. Consequently, President Bush inherited a decayed intelligence apparatus and a terrorist network, already living among Americans, that was planning the largest attack ever on U.S. soil.”
This is flat not true, and those in your news department know it is not true, whether or not they are allowed to say it on air. But, since The Citizens United statement is not true, would it not be considered one of your "controversial issues of public importance?" Is that not one of the reasons given for refusing to the show the MoveOn.org ad?
Many would see this as an attempt to bolster the President’s approval ratings and contrary to your policy of not running "advocacy advertising," again a phrase used when refusing to air the MoveOn.org ad. Have you now decided to align yourselves with Fox News?
You might want to reconsider before alienating those who greatly admired this President. Polls show that, contrary to what you and your contemporaries played followed Reagan’s death, Clinton is the most popular President of the current era.
I am truly saddened that this is what has happened to CBS. It was the station of some of our most enduring and endearing figures – Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, Jessica Fletcher, Dick Van Dyke, Carol Burnett and the one who is today probably most saddened, Walter Cronkite. Edward R. Murrow must be spinning in his grave.
Don’t worry. I’ll be watching, along with many millions of others, who are tired of the blatant lies and partisanship. We will also be sure to let your advertisers know how we feel. And, we will be voting.

Sorry. Not sure how I managed to do that. Just by refreshing the page, I think. I really wasn't that worried about people seeing what I sent CBS.

On the other hand, it's not the worst thing in the world for the fanatical Clenis-hating hordes to remind everyone how loathsome they are. Last time they went off, the Republicans' numbers fell through the basement.

Just posted a complaint to the CBS website.
Basically said same thing as TracieLynn above.
Mentioned that "Republicans control whole government, military, voting-machine companies, and with corporate media that's all the ingredients for a one-party state. And you know how crooked those can get."
Ended with suggestion that Murrow's ghost should visit them of a midnight to excoriate theri consciences, since they KNOW he would not approve.
