GravatarJohn Gorenfeld - Holy shit, Moon's an arms dealer, too? This is the first I've heard about that.

Thanks, BTW, for your work uncovering all the Moon stuff.

GravatarJohn G.

just wanted to make sure you saw the coronation story over at the WSJ. It was by some former journalist of The Times. It was an odd piece, IMO.

GravatarTena -- Cool, I'm glad this was a shock. I just pitched a magazine on a follow-up re: this very subject. The media is letting Congressmen off the hook by saying they've been hanging out with the equivalent of Desmond Tutu.

Thank you to everyone who has helped force the media to cover this story...I hope the complete picture emerges.

Oh yeah, the WSJ thing is really protesting too much. The church has been promoting bizarre New World Order schemes in the news section of the Times.

Quentin,

have you heard about the new bet? TEAM SMARTY et al say TREASON BITCHES BY THE 26th! That is to say that we bet that the Fitzgerald grand jury will hand down indictments against one or more Bush appointees on or before the 26th, the beginning of the Dem Convention.

Team Holden, composed of various horse haters, say no way.

Proceeds to Kerry or losers fav dem candidate.

Come join our team!

Gravatarwherever you're going--take me with you!

GravatarOh, go fuck yourself. There. I feel better. I've brought honor and dignity to the blogosphere. Oh, gosh, it was so, SO dishorable and undignified for President Cllinton to put up campaign donors in the Lincold bedroom when he should have pu them up in his own mansion. Wait. He didn't HAVE a mansion of his own. Just shows how unfit for office he was. Gosh, I'm so orgasmically thrilled that W and Dick have put us all in our places and shown what honor and dignity mean. Not that the press will ever notice....

Gravatar      "One night, probably in 1880, John Swinton, then the preeminent New York journalist, was the guest of honour at a banquet given him by the leaders of his craft. Someone who knew neither the press nor Swinton offered a toast to the independent press. Swinton outraged his colleagues by replying:

"There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone.

"The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes."

GravatarNobody gives a damn about Jack Ryan anymore, so I'll probably never have a better place to post this excellent quote from my brother, a loyal but oft-maddened Illinois Republican:

"Only a Republican could get caught in a sex scandal with his own wife."

GravatarOH MY GOD!!! Bill Clinton almost died two days ago! He says so himself.

GravatarCheeky Monkey here. Monkey wonders when exactly is the deadline for indictments to be issued by the Grand Jury in the Plame case (if they so decide of course).
Monkey also wonders when George Tenet's resignation becomes effective and he is no longer a part of the executive branch of Government.

GravatarRoll My Mole = troll looking for hits to his Clinton hating site.

GravatarCheeky Monkey,

join TEAM SMARTY on our bet of TREASON BITCHES BY THE 26th!

Anyway,

I saw this post from last night, and I, too, was curious as I have heard nothing about it...

I want those indictments, and I want them NOW!

Is there truth to the rumor(?) that Fitzgerald's grand jury closed up shop on Wednesday? Anybody know how grand juries work, i.e., how long after the empaneled jury is released can the indictments be announced? I guess I want to know: IF the grand jury finished its work on Wednesday (and how do we find out if THAT'S true?), does the fact that we've heard nothing so far mean that there are no indictments?

Gravatarlk,
From what military friends tell me, competence and ability are rare fruit in the upper echelons of the service. The Army and Air Force, particularly, are apparently notorious for political generalships and fast-rising desk jockeys who've managed to sniff the right butts and kiss the proper feet.

I don't know if that's the case for sure, of course, but considering that's basically how the world works, I wouldn't be surprised.

GravatarRoll My Mole = troll looking for hits to his Clinton hating site.

GravatarDoes anyone remeber Haiti? While US forces (marines) and French forces (don't know what branch) were on the ground there Haitians were being slaughtered. Not because they were terrorists. Not because they had broken any laws. Simply because they had (at any time) supported Aristide. Colin (YMCA) Powell planned and implemented this little adventure. The new Haitian government is composed of people convicted for numerous crimes in a court of law. One of the first things the newly installed Haitian government did was open prisons and let these convicted (with legal representation) people free. The new Haitian government was installed by the US government. Haitians are still dying in horrible ways. Many Haitians have gone into hiding. Where's the outrage? This is happening in our own backyard. As my grandma used to say "take care of home first". I'm not unsympathic to the suffering of the Iraqi people. I'm dismayed by the lack of concern for the suffering (aided by the US govt) for those so close to us.

Saddam Could Call CIA in His Defence

....The Halabja massacre is now prominent among the charges read out against Saddam in the Baghdad court. When that charge was read out, Saddam replied that he had read about the massacre in a newspaper. Saddam has denied these allegations ever since they were made. But now with a trial on, he could summon a witness in his defence with the potential to blow apart the charge and create one of the greatest diplomatic disasters the United States has ever known.

OT From today's Inderpendent.....

'Saddems trial was censored by the US military. An American network cameraman who demanded the return of his tapes, which contained audios of the hearings, said he was told "No. They belong to us now, and anyway, we don't trust you guys"

The US military told everyone that it was the judges descision to switch of the sound. But........ "we learned later that the Judge did not order us to turn of our sound. The Americans lied-it was they who wanted no sound"...... said a tv crew member.

But the tv crews only pretended to un plug the audio wires, so the world heard most of Saddam.

However, The Americans erased the entire audiotaoe of the hearings of the eleven fromer Saddam ministers.......So there is now no technical record of the words of these eleven men save for the notebooks of 'pool' reporters.

They just can't stop lying, can they? lie, lie, lie, and then claim it was the judge. But hey, Clinton lied about sex, so that is worth reporting!

GravatarI am thinking about seeing F 9/11 again tomorrow and updating my review with more thoughts on a second viewing. I think that's a nice patriotic way of spending the 4th.

What about you?

Gravatarif anyone wants to strangle our military all they have to do is file a lawsuit in our courts. I always thought Saddam should have done that before we attacked.

"We Don't Trust You Guys"

Pentagon Tried to Censor Saddam's Hearing

By ROBERT FISK
The Independent

Baghdad

A team of US military officers acted as censors over all coverage of the hearings of Saddam Hussein and his henchmen on Thursday, destroying videotape of Saddam in chains and deleting the entire recorded legal submissions of 11 senior members of his former regime.

A US network cameraman who demanded the return of his tapes, which contained audios of the hearings, said he was told by a US officer: "No. They belong to us now. And anyway, we don't trust you guys."

According to American journalists present at the 30-minute hearing of Saddam and 11 former ministers at Baghdad airport, an American admiral in civilian clothes told camera crews that the judge had demanded that there should be no sound recording of the initial hearing. He ordered crews to unplug their sound wires. Several of the six crews present pretended to obey the instruction. "We learnt later," one of them said, "that the judge didn't order us to turn off our sound. The Americans lied--it was they who wanted no sound. The judge wanted sound and pictures."

Tena,

former members of TEAM HOLDEN are more than welcome to TEAM SMARTY. This is a completely new bet. Some like to call it TREASON BITCHES BY THE 26th!

The date was set for the 26th because any turkee to Kerry must be given by his acceptance speech.

However, Holden thought maybe Kerry has enough turkee, so we agreed that the losers could give any amount to any dem candidate they desired.

So I cordially invite you and all other smart people to join us in our bet that Fitzgerald will indict one or more W. appointees on or before the 26th.

GravatarSpeaking of TEAM SMARTY and the Plame investigation, Kate and I have been wondering about whether anyone knows anything about the Fitzgerald grand jury being over. Can anyone help us out?...

smarty -

I think it was on Democratic Underground that I heard the rumor (?) about ten days ago that Wednesday was to be the last day, because they had six months to do their job. Supposedly June 30 was the end of six months. (I'm not even sure how to verify THAT.) And so someone who was in touch with Wayne Madsen (I think it was) said that if there were going to be indictments, they would happen in the coming week (i.e., by this past Friday). I wish I knew where to verify these things. I keep googling and finding nothing recent, just old articles about W lawyering up, then getting interviewed. Nothing current.

GravatarI'm happy to know so many are concerned about a fair trial for Saddam. How about a fair trial for Aristide? Or do all believe the SCLM when they say Aristide is a "bad guy"? This is the same SCLM that carries water for the current administration. It's this administration that says Aristide is also a "bad guy". Last I heard Aristide has never been accused (even by the US govt) of "crimes against humanity". Where's the outrage?

GravatarHey, people!

I'm new here...had been a member of DU (Democratic Underground) for 4 years, but they just banned me for calling attention to a newbie who had come back from being banned after really disgusting posts about enjoying the torture of Iraqis.

from the Independent, about Nadia McCaffrey...who defied Bush by allowing the media to view the coffin of her son,Patrick, killed in action in Iraq......"Major General Eres, a tall grey-haired adjutant general of California, had been sent by the governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, to tell Patricks family that his death in Iraq had come while fighting for a noble cause. There was no shame in that, he said, turning to Patricks young widow Silvia. "you can be very proud of him"

"Governor Schwarzenegger sent his condolences, said the general, apparantly unaware of the irony that the man who spent most of his Hollywood carrer posing as an action hero was now the commander of America's largest National Guard unit and was sending messages of sympathy to those who had died in action rather than just on screen"

GravatarSince my front porch flag does not have a 'half-staff' position, this is personally irrelevant, but I am just amazed and curious. My teevee says that the WH has decided to go back to full-staff today, if I understand my instructions correctly. That's a day or two short of the 30-day protocol. I guess that's to have Old Glory flying full on July 4. OK, I suppose, but what's the big diff? Will this give Raygun the shortest flag-lowering for a dead prez in history? He'd probably dig it, and the family may be cool with it. Maybe that's it; 'always 30 days, except RR because of the 4th' exceptionalism. Or the WH image wizards need some "just so" July 4th pics, and had to shove the pesky presidential corpse out of the shot.

The vision screen bills it as a "tribute to Reagan", I kid you not.

GravatarI'm happy to know so many are concerned about a fair trial for Saddam.

Are you? That's really, really great.

How about a fair trial for Aristide?

Perhaps you're aware that since the coup, Aristide has been chased out of the Western Hemisphere, with a healthy assist by the U.S.

That's a fantastic way to introduce a vitally important subject to which not enough people are paying attention. Insulting your audience will always take you very, very far.

GravatarRecently, there seems to have been a lull in new reports of what went down in Abu Ghraib and other prisons, however there is this story from the NYT today that is pretty interesting.

It says that in the days and weeks after Saddam's capture, m-i was permitted to use "harsh methods" against Iraqis who were captured with him and certain others without the approval of Sanchez, which is a new revelation.

Also, Karpinski says that there were Israeli citizens in working interrogations at Abu Ghraib.

GravatarHere's a corrected link for the Guardian article on the Saddam hearing.

Hope it works--my first try!

Gravatar"It says that in the days and weeks after Saddam's capture, m-i was permitted to use "harsh methods" against Iraqis who were captured with him and certain others without the approval of Sanchez, which is a new revelation."

Smarty, remember one of the "deck of cards" guys turned himself in around that time and he was the one who was shoved in a sleeping bag head-first and was pummeled and he suffocated and died. The photos of the troops smiling and giving thumbs up over the dead body was publicized widely.

I read the Karpinsky thing this morning too. I like that she speaks flatly and plainly but she also disgusts me because she takes no responsibility whatsoever about anything! She's made of stone. It's not my job, it's not my fault.

Nice to know we can be proud when they say so. Instead of we share the pride she feels in his service... the statement's wording indicates someone who feels seperate from the sense of scarifice and the cost of the conflict.

A human form letter...

GravatarReally, cool thread. Very-well informed. Thanks everyone.

GravatarSay, I have a question. How long is it appropriate to fly the flag at half-mast after a president dies? I ask because here in Seattle all the flags are still flying low, almost a month after Reagan died.

I don't remember flags staying at half-mast this long after 9/11. Is there anything in the flag code about this?

GravatarThis is sure to piss off all of us anti-Brooks folks. I'm catching just the end of it now, and Neil Gabler was going ON about how the NYT has two very anti-Kerry reporters covering him. Now they are banging on the constant repetition of the same story 24/7 on cable news; used a shot of Scott Peterson at court, repeated six or seven times.

News Watch repeats a time or two. Somebody prove me wrong.

GravatarCurious thing I've noticed.

Fake News Channel had a piece about the UN being invited (by congressional Dems) to monitor the US election.

The tart who introduced the segment said "Can the group that brought us the oil-for-food scandal be trusted to monitor our elections?"

I've noticed how the drooling wingnuts like FNC staff and Joe "Dead Intern" Scarborough can't ever mention the UN without mentioning oil-for-food.

And yet, whenever they mention Nero or his handlers, they never seem to be able to mention Valerie Plame.

Anyway, I thought it was funny. Funny-sad, not funny-haha.

There's another good article in the July Vanity Fair about the resistance movement in Iraq, and what a diverse group of people they are, and their various motivations for being in the resistance. GravatarI hope no VP ever told no planes to stand down on 9-11 cause that's the day that Fred MacMurray was flyin' his model T over the Whitehouse powered by by Flubber, 'member?

GravatarHey, smarty!

I'm back (off & on tonight) and raring to go. [And I'm sure you've been going through your paces to stay fit, too!] Let's get TEAM SMARTY rolling! Who else will join us? Plame Flames start burning this month!

To get the embers glowing, here's a link to a new Joe Klein editorial called "Plenty More to Swear About" about the FOUR fronts Bushco is desperately fighting to keep from going down in flames. He has a couple of interesting bits on the Plame situation, and implies that it is serious indeed. Let me whet your appetite first with an interesting quote from the article: "...there is intense anger over the White House's revealing the identity of Plame, who may have been active in a sting operation involving the trafficking of WMD components." What I find interesting is the potential connection to the speculations in the 2003 Seymour Hersch article that suggested that the forged Niger documents were themselves a "sting" of sorts run by our own spooks to snare Bushco. Does this Joe Klein quote fit the Hersch profile, hmmmm? Yellowcake is certainly a "WMD component." Here's the link:

http://tinyurl.com/328q8

GravatarAlso, over at Democratic Underground there's a (long) thread going in the "General Discussion" forum on the Plame stuff and indictments. There is speculation that Plame was involved in investigating WMD trafficking and that the REAL reason she was outed was to shut down her investigation (not really revenge against Joe Wilson), because her investigation was going to implicate some of our very own "bad players" in WMD trafficking. I can't tell to what degree this speculation is based on some real inside scoops, or whether folks are just pulling stuff out of the air. But interesting to read, nonetheless.

GravatarSo the real scandal in the oil for food program for Iraq is that the Coalition cannot account for the income, oil or anything else in the time it ran the program.

We all hope Wolfie doesn't have a new summer house and a new computer for instahack.

GravatarKate, that sounds quite reasonable to me.

The Professionals have been trying to nail the Company at this sort of thing for awhile.

The split personality in the CIA is coming to a real head. This should be a very interesting summer. May the gods of Liberty look after us all if the Company- a.k.a. the Carlyle Group- get absolute control of the CIA with four more years of Bu$hCo.

Gravatar"Rev. Moon: Take the Christian cross out to the dumpster and worship me instead

Why aren't Red State voters out in the street over this sh**"

An excellent point.

I have been wondering about this since I read it. If this is acceptable to "God fearing Christians", we have a whole different animal out there than we might think.

I just cannot grasp how people of Faith can allow what they build their lives around be manipulated and exploited as it seems to be. I find myself becoming defensive for them when I see the shameful way their creed is being used.

Oh well...

GravatarThat parody at The Poor Man is hilarious!

Everyone should check it out.

GravatarThe Administration went from Shock and Awe to Shuck and Aw'Shucks.

And from Shuck and Aw'Shucks to Shuck and Jive.

Oh, wait.

They've been good at shucking and jiving all along.

GravatarDear George, I have taken the liberty of sending you this draft of the declaration for your approval and comment. Yours, Thomas Jefferson

Dear Tommy, See, I don't do nuance. George

GravatarI think Rev. Moon found out that Jesus was a Commonist.
