Bush . . . took issue with Kerry's pronouncement this week that he and running mate John Edwards were proud of the fact that they opposed in the Senate the $87 billion aid package for Afghanistan and Iraq. Kerry said they had done so because "we knew the policy had to be changed."
"He's entitled to his view," Bush said. "But members of Congress should not vote to send troops into battle and then vote against funding them, and then brag about it."
Kerry's campaign responded that Kerry had served in the Vietnam War and questions linger about Bush's wartime service in the Texas Air National Guard.
There you have it: Kerry spent four months in Vietnam, so why should he care about the soldiers whose lives are on the line now? You just can't make this stuff up.

Getting back to the topic at hand, I love that Helen Thomas kept harping on the important question. Remember when we were discussing this in one of Holden's previous obsessions, and several people suggested that someone should just say, "Do we have secret detainees or not?" Well, Helen Thomas asked that question and (to the surprise of no one who's been paying attention to this administration) Scottie refused to answer. I guess to the Bush administration, that is the answer.

It's obvious you or anyone else who harps on it hasn't ever worked in a legislative environment before - either that, or you don't care to enlighten folks about it to unfairly serve your cause. I truly admire Helen Thomas simply because most people I know would not be so demanding of getting an answer. How she can deal with McClellan pulling this crap day in and day out, I'll never know, but damn she is amazing in her push to get an answer (even if it is a non-answer).
Heck maybe the underlying reason that many reporters do not ask hard kweschens at the gaggle is that they know that Bushco will never answer the question (would love to see a load of reporters all harp continually on the same question until McClellan's head explodes). McClellan definitely answers the question he wants to hear, which reminds me of the movie "The Fog of War" where McNamara says he always answered the question he wanted to answer and not the question that was asked.

Kudos for Helen to be the ONLY one to ask about this issue, when we know fer shur that they have
1) a HVT to trot out from Pakistan in around 9 days
2) a still unidentified guy who was _admittedly_ hidden from the Red Cross and apparently lost
3)Human Rights Watch says they know of 13 persons who are being held by the CIA in secret.
Now, if just a couple of reporters would spend _half_ the time on the identity of the secret detainees that they spent picking apart Fahrenheit 911, we might have a democracy.

Right on. Also, Bush WH was also against the $87B. They threatened to veto if the $87B was tied to tax cut
repeal or if the $87B was split into $67B military and $20B for Iraq reconstruction. So Bush himself was a flip-flopper on these funds.

Let me guess, after catching him out last night pretending to be Thug/Attila, my lovely deranged friend is now claiming to be "RepThug"? It's genius on the level of someone posting as Ratty on LGF and then someone else coming along and claiming to first be Ratty, and then saying "Ok, I'll be DemoRatty" then! Genius, I tell you!
And oooh... yet more brand new trolling names with fake email addresses! Yes 'Mustafa', we really believe that in 2004 the address of Mustafa@hotmail.com was available. At least it's not some actual poor innocent person's email address you've stolen this time... Now lecture us all on morality, Mr Troll, as if you guys are even slightly credible.
But on topic... How can Scottie claim that the US Government is working with the International Red Cross, when the IRC's original complaint is that by holding secret detainees away from independent scrutiny, the US Government is violating the very raison d'etre of the IRC? How can anyone be so ignorant to swallow this argument? Or do they just not care what argument they make, as long as they can still keep insisting that they are right? I think we all know the answer to that one...

A story that might have missed the radar in the US: the British have basically given the go-ahead to another part of the American Gulag.
You might have heard about Diego Garcia. You might have heard about how the British kicked the 4,500 islanders off Diego Garcia to set up a military base there on behalf of the US. You might not have heard about how the islanders ended up on Mauritius, and many of them (rather like Native Americans) have been plagued by unemployment and substance abuse problems. After all, they're refugees.
You might have heard that the Diego Garcia islanders won a court case granting them the right of return. You probably hadn't heard that the British government secretly declared the court's ruling null and void by an 'order in council' -- an invocation of royal prerogative -- which unilaterally replaced the constitution of the island with one saying that 'no person has the right of abode in the territory or has unrestricted access to any part of it'.
And you certainly haven't heard that much about 'Camp Justice', the new prison facility built for hundreds of detainees on Diego Garcia, outside of any legal oversight.
It's the British colonial Gitmo. It's where the US will dump its detainees now that the Supreme Court has ruled on Camp Delta, because the lease arrangement doesn't allow for the Gitmo precedents to be invoked with regard to US jurisdiction.

So, we have secret detainees. Of course, we can't admit it because they've all been sex-tortured, so we just have to wait until Helen Thomas dies and then the country will forget. Then we can ghost the hostages I mean detainees.
All because we let some assholes with weapons onto some planes. Really, that's it, isn't it?
Completely preventable. And in ways that do not trash our basic values in irreversable ways. But no.

Not only was Kerry opposed to borrowing another 87 billion on top of an already burgeoning deficit, alert readers will also remember the Repubs had stripped auditing and oversight provisions out of the bill in conference committee. Thus we, the taxpayers, were essentially writing an 87 billion dollar check with no accounting to make sure the money was spent responsibly. Isn't it odd that Repubs, who are always quick to proclaim their distrust of government, trust the government to spend 87 billion with virtually no accountability? Buth that's OK, we know Halliburton would never gouge us, don't we?

I figured a CEO ought to be responsible for the employees in his organization, so I wrote the following letter:
To the President:
As you are so-to-speak the CEO of the USA and the boss at the White House,
I have decided to e-mail you concerning the job performance of one of your
employees, Mr. Scott McClellan.
In his capacity as Press Secretary, Mr. McClellan's job is to answer press
members questions to the best of his ability and also to be a public face
of the White-House and hence reflect the values espoused by our currentadministration.
Recently, there has been a question repeatedly raised by that much
esteemed senior member of the White House Press Corps, Ms. Helen Thomas,
regarding the possibility of secret detainees of which the Red Cross has
not been properly informed.
Mr. McClellan has dodged this question repeatedly while acting as if he
has answered it when he has not (by the way - what is the answer - are
there any secret detainees who could be possibly "subjected to the same
treatment as in Baghdad prisons"? - the quotation is directly from a
question by Ms. Thomas). By not responding adequately to the question answered, Mr. McClellan has failed to do his job of keeping the people
informed of the activities of the executive branch. By acting as if he
has answered a question which he has not, he insults the intelligence of
Ms. Thomas and the American people.
Is not respect for elders a fundamental value of America? Is not respect
for the intelligence of the American people and right for us to know about
the activities of our government also a fundamental value of America?
If you and your party claim to support the values of America, lest you be hypocrites, you ought to take the lead in cleaning your own house of those
who do not support American values. I hope I can rest assured that Mr.
McClellan will at least receive some form of disciplinary action or
censure until such time as he respects his elders and the intelligence and
rights of the American people. At the very least, you, as his boss, ought
to make sure he does his job and adequately answers the questions the
press puts before him.
Sincerely,
David Snyder

From the Froomkin piece:
Karl Rove was in Irvine, in the heart of conservative Orange County, Calif.
As a former resident of Irvine (well, I guess I was never official a "resident" as I kept my vote registration where I grew up - I just lived on campus there), I can say that Irvine is, in many ways, most emphetically not the heart of conservative Orange County.
While Irvine has many parts that are as bland and cookie cutter suburbia as they come and it, no doubt, has way more than its fair share of conservatives ... indeed, there is an aspect of Irvine that is the "soul" of suburban OC conservativism, it is not the "heart" ... before it was a suburb, Irvine was a hippy town in its northern reaches and a University town in its south-western edge (indeed, UCI has great faculty housing because, according to the older professors, at the time Jews were not allowed to live in Newport Beach - well, I know there were a few Jews there as I have relatives that lived in Newport Beach at the time ... but I don't think anyone realized my blond-haired/blue-eyed relations were Jewish). While it isn't the most liberal place over all (and it has Rethug Congresscritters), it has long had a Democratic mayor and some very nice pockets of liberalism and progressivism.
The "soul" of OC conservativism may very well be lodged in the bland suburban tracts of Irvine, but Irvine (and many other places in South County) are far from the heart of OC conservativism.

Kathleen Hall Jamieson writes that rhetoric scholar Karl Wallace defined the 'four moralities of communication': the obligation to search and inquire; the obligation to be accurate, fair, and just in the use of argument; the willingness to submit private motivations to public scrutiny; and the willingness to tolerate dissent.
Obviously Mr. McClellan does not believe in moral communication, and like so many others in public discourse--including our friends at Fox, CNN, MSNBC, and on radio--has cheapened and debased communication in public affairs to the point it has become a meaningless charade that fools no one of even marginal intelligence or discrimination.
