I had a similar experience. I was sitting in a, lets call it a bunker, when I saw on TV that the world trade center had been hit by a plane. I thought to myself "I was writing about that a few years back."
Very mind blowing.

There was a piece in today's Atlanta Urinal-Constipation about politcal bloggers. Mentioned Wonkette, Kos and Sullivan, among some others I didn't recognize. I read through about half of it. It was typical AJC unreadable tripe, and I got the strong impression some editor got a tip that blogs were "hot" and assigned the story to a first-year student who didn't have a clue about the whole shebang.
As for Obama's qualities as a true represenatives of black people all over the country, well...hell, I don't know. When was the last time anyone went to the U.S. Congress who wasn't richer than God? Hell, when was the last time a sure-nuff blue-collar white guy held a seat? Money makes the monkey dance, dear hearts.

Atrios, the TV "news" people are ALWAYS doing reports about the TV news business. You know, how they're covering what they've chosen to cover. The latest gossip being reported by the media. This last one gives them permission to report it once as gossip and forever more to treat it as hard fact. They're thier favorite subject. Likewise the print journalists about their medium.
While this is a cautionary tale about the dangers of egocentrism, you're far from being in danger. Just now.

Now if while you are watching CNN report on bloggers while you are blogging in the airport and of a sudden the camera zooms in on an anonymous blogger watching CNN while blogging in the airport, then you'll know it's hit the post-modern zenith. Or something.

And, admittedly, I wouldn't mind seeing that.
But . . . eyes on the prize. For example: today's Sunday paper headlines, all over, were that AP crap about BUSH IN EV LEAD! Electoral-vote.com was, apparently, not consulted on that. Also, that AP's own "analysis" showed *neither* candidate even close to 270. But from the MW headlines, one would think Bush had the momentum and everything all but wrapped up. InFURIATINGLY, MWish. Some blogger, that the MWs are watching (reading this, Atrios?) ought to out that crap and do a nice solid rant on it.
For all his smarts. Josh Mitchell seems to have OCD over exploring the minutia of whether or not Wilson's wife recommended him for his Niger trip (Earth to Josh: That's a GOP red herring, and your obsessing on it!). Bob Somerby's doing the same. God! Heaven forbid the independent and/or progressive bloggers HAMMER the MWs (right NOW, while they, the bloggers, have center stage) for their, the MWs, shilling for Bush & Co.

Second, make sure you've got good throat lozenges and drink lots and lots of water. Make sure the a/c is moderate - as an easterner you're probably not used to a/c anyway and it'll only make your throat worse.
Third, crash all the parties there are. We're waiting to hear what you're eating, 'cause that's the only part that matters. Give details.

If a blogger gets sucked into the media vortex, and is then shit out the other end, what do they morph into?
For intance, we have seen Judy Woodruff, who was a respected journalist while on PBS, get sucked into the CNN vortex and then emerge as a Rethuglican talkingpoint-repeating whore. Likewise, David Brooks, who at least had a reputation for moderation, turned into just another Rethuglican, "party before country, baby", partisan hack when he got sucked into Safire's orbit at the NYT.
Careful boys and girls. Tether yourselves. Don't get sucked in.

smalfish - ah, Springfield. A good friend of mine grew up there, and it's sorta on the way to Brattleboro, where my wife went to grad school a few years back (Marlboro ISM program).
Even though we've visited probably half of Vermont's towns, we just started doing the "251 Club" tour of the state and have been documenting it on a travelblog. We're really interested in exploring the southern part of the state, since we see the north all the time.
One other glitch, with a new digital camera (old one went on the fritz a couple of days ago): anyone know why a Nikon Coolpix 3200 would have a constant battery drain, even while turned completely off? This is the camera with which I hope to record the convention, so this could be a problem. (Is it possible that an SD card which is not on Nikon's approved list could somehow be the culprit?) When jets crash, rarely is anything left of you larger than the size of a kneecap. I had to fly a lot on commercial airlines in the military and they would let a couple of my buddies and me in the cockpit and I can tell you, they're all drunk thinking it's funny and then they pass out asleep. Planes had plenty of dangers before IX/XI, none of which were allowed into the corporate-dictated discourse, and it's not like the terrorists or their friends in the administration did anything about fixing any of them. It is unfair to characterize Incog's reasonable (and wider-spread than you think, Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick didn't fly) suspicion of air travel as mere low racism or submission to the wahhabi al-Bushi.

post gonzo...
That's a label I would wear with pride.
Hmmm... I think what you get there is "Pozzo," but that makes me think of Waiting for Godot....

"Kick Judith Miller in the teeth.
"(Note: I am just kidding. I do not advocate violent attacks upon journalists by bloggers.)"
--Well, how do you feel about violent attacks upon journalists by ordinary, garden variety concerned citizens? The reason I ask is because I don't have a problem with it. In fact, I think it's a good idea.

Journalists that flagrantly lie, and betray the public trust?
I'm sorry to say that I agree with Jeremiah, when that sort of journalist is involved.

Airplanes generally don't crash, and when they do it is generally takeoff or landing. That's when I tense up.
You are, however, more likely to die while driving. Most people ignore this because there are 1)In control. They themselves are doing the the driving and everyone thinks that they are a good driver.*
2) You're on the ground, which doesn't make much difference if you're going 40 mph.
* I consider myself, like everyone else, to be a really good driver. But just the other night went over a curb I knew was there from lack of attention (driving on only 1hrs sleep can do that to ya, impaired judgment is a beeyotch, and we all operate under it fom time to time).

Can I pretend to be a blogger at the convention? Would we know? Sorta like Timmy, Tommy, et al pretending to be at the convention while they are still at home batting ghosts of Morrow in the attic.

Sorry. Party loyalty demands Timmy, Tommy and Katie bat the ghosts of Chet and David.

For some reason, I've nearly always felt safer in an aircraft than I have in a tall building. Funnily enough, I haven't been in a tall building since 9/11.

Monica, you are a silly person if you think negative coverage of the Republican Party is some rare or novel thing. A very silly person."
Toby Petzold
TP, the only sense in which your silly declaration can be said to be true is that negative coverage of the Republican Party is rare or novel is that it is neither since it has not yet been tried. Tom Tomorrow had an illustrative cartoon in last week's In These Times. Sorry, don't have a link.
Monica is correct, TP is the silly-billy.
