Also, this is OT, but I've been checking the LA Times electoral college map. If you go here and click on the interactive map, you'll see that Washington is blue, with Kerry 7% ahead, 8% undecided and 1%Nader. Right next door is Oregon, which shows Kerry 8% ahead, 4% undecided and 4% Nader. Yet Oregon is shown on the map as an undecided state. Seems to me that Oregon is MORE of a sure thing, based on those numbers.

Projecting.
Ms. Musgrave looks to be engaging in that now well-established right wingnut practice of "projecting." As anyone who's taken Psych 101, or has listened to anywhere from 2-to-2.5 seconds of Bush, Cheney, DeLay, Limbaugh, Hannity, Scarborough, etc. speaking (in Bush's case, trying to speak), knows, projection is when one attributes one's own undesirabe traits to other people or agencies, e.g., an asshole accuses other people of being assholes.
Ms. Musgrave, who, as I understand it, is a rather obsessive homophobe, and who devotes a great deal of her time and energy towards stamping out the gay menace that threatens to fray and destroy our great nation fiber, is not exactly what think most Americans would consider a mainstream, or, for that matter, stable, person.
I know lots of people. Some of the people I know don't give a fig about "the gay issue." Others care even less than that. Some think it's somewhat vital to promote and legislate "gay rights." Still others think that's a rather bad, and, in fact, immoral idea. But I really don't know of ANYBODY who is as OCD over the issue as I understand Ms. Musgrave to be. She seems, in a word, to be rather radical about it.
So along comes a Democratic challenger who, from just a cursory look at his positions, is all into general social justice issues, supports family farm assistance over more deference to ConAgra and ADM, is for more focus on education, and, lo and behold, has been endorsed by Greeley, Colo's Republican Mayor.
And, you guessed it, Ms. Musgrave is calling Mr. Matsunaka a "radical," or at least his supporters. Right.
By the way, "Matsunaka" is "middle pine tree." In Asia, Japan in particular, the pine is a symbol of steadfastness and strength, no matter the adversity, whether winter snows or summer storms. "Naka," middle, means "middle."
"Musgrave," derives from is Olde Celt meaning: "I fear I've latent lesbian tendencies. Must resist. Must. Fight. Urges. " or something like that.
"But the troubling part is this -- if any of those kids from other countries who made good here win medals, it'll just be an excuse for the US to gloat about the wins. And, largely because of our asinine administration, I am really hoping that we don't even grab all that many bronze medals. Nothing would warm my heart more than to see other countries dominate this year -- and, ye trolls, before you jump on the out of context statement as proof that all liberals are commie pinko faggot atheist (two out of four ain't bad) America haters, look at it this way. There are 220 countries in the Olympics. 86 have never won any medals at all. America has won a buttload. For our government's behavior in the world over the last 3 1/2 years, we deserve to win none.
We really are Germany, 1936, except that we're not hosting -- and I hope to hell some other country gives us a Carl Lewis to bitch slap us back into the humility that this country had previously been known for. "
Ah, I get it, he doesn't want the US to win any medals at all (well maybe some bronze medals!) not because he hates the country but because...wait for it...we're Nazi Germany circa 1936!!!
I love this site, really I do. No where else can someone say something this moon-battery and have no one call them on it.

on the LATimes map.. it says that Kerry's 50% lead in OR is at 'full MOE* range', referring to the margin of error.
In WA it's only 49% but no caveat on the MOE, so I'm guessing with that data they're not comfortable to call OR blue, even though on the right side, they show the last four election voting record for OR, gore, clinton, clinton, dukakis.

Posted this a bit earlier... and totally, OT, but yet another example of the press being a shameless tool. Salon had another interesting article about Annie Jacobsen's crusade against Syrian musicians. What I found truly disturbing was the fact that a group called the Federal Air Marshal Association (FAMA) , is not an official government entity but, "several media accounts discussing Annie Jacobsen include statements from FAMA, ostensibly speaking on the government's behalf." All govt. agencies, of course, have refuted Jacobsen's allegations, yet the bonehead press insists on quoting a group whose head is not even a Federal Air Marshall.
I really recommend going to FAMA’s website, do not skip the intro- it is one of the most shameless pieces of propaganda and fear-mongering that I've seen, (okay, maybe not, but it is truly dispicable). It is infuriating that the press even quotes these people. The article is worth putting up with Salon's sponsorship ads.

"In Marilyn Musgrave's own words in a fundraising blastmail, "All the Homosexual Lobby needs to do [to ensure equal rights] is to defeat me for re-election this year so no one in Congress will stand up for traditional marriage." While we should be so lucky as to only have the anti-equality forces be reduced to one lone voice, Musgrave has appointed herself the guardian of this issue and all other radical "conservatives" are waiting to see whether her tactics will be politically successful or not."

And meanwhile Iraq is fast approaching civil war, despite all his assurance way back then that capturing Saddam would end the insurgency? How can anyone be so moonbatty and not realise it?!"
Let's go to the video tape: Iraq is developing into a free country and got the most cheers of any nation outside of Greece at the Olympic games.
Meanwhile, John Kerry is desperately trying to portray himself to the RIGHT of Bush on many issues, on fiscal discipline and defense to name two issues. When was the last time you saw so many Vets at a Democratic convention? He's actually talked about pushing for a reduction in middle class and corporate taxes. Meanwhile, Edwards is talking about how he will "destroy Al Qaeda", not negotiate, not look at the "root causes" of their poverty, yadda yadda.
Meanwhile, Howard Dean, the progressive darling, is filling in to host for John McEnroe's show apparently and getting a 0.0 rating. He's also become the laughingstock of the entiire United States outside of "progressive" (read: people who like to empower their government to take OTHER people's money and re-distribute it) web sites like this one, where the supporters mostly engage in mental circle jerking anyway.
Yep, looks like I was right. Even if Kerry wins, which I do not foresee, don't look at it as if it's some validation for "progressive" policies. Kerry is no progressive, and he'd be balanced by a Republican House and Senate even if he wanted to become one. Socialism doesn't sell here.

There are so many easy shots to take at Philly, that I feel guilty. It's like kicking cripples. But here's one:
The reason Kerry is preaching fiscal reponsibility is not because he's moving to the right of Bush, it's because Bush has abandoned all principles of conservatism and his party. And as Bush has no principled position, right or left, it is therefore impossible to move farther either way. The only option is to HAVE principles, which would be a welcome change.

I was wondering if there is any plan to counter Bush if he ends up catching Osama in Sep. or Oct. There's definitely action (no doubt hindered by their outing of Kahn) in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region right now, which says to me their ramping up their efforts. Can't Howard Dean come out and say that they are obviously trying to time Osama's capture as an October surprise? This needs to get out, because without public suspicion of it, Kerry's toast if Osama is caught soon.
More cynically, what if one day before the election, the Bushies *lie* about having caught Osama and say they'll release the non-existant evidence in a few days. But then later on, we learn -- whoops! -- it really wasn't him and the evidence was mistaken.

I'm sorry Philly G, I searched and searched your reply, and I didn't see any mention at all of the words "Najaf" or "Moqtada al-Sadr" in it: shurely shome mishtake? (sic)

And considering that the Palestinian team recieved an equal ovation, one could just as easily assume that it's people involved in Jihad that the audience loves... But I'm sure you have both sworn affidavits as to the reason from the audience for the cheering, and the recorded decibel levels for each countries cheers to back up this remarkable political insight you have between response at a sporting event and a nations political health, yes?
And then the Howard Dean comment: Classic Philly G! Let's assume for a moment that there was a certain Right Wing person who also took over sportscasting for a major network... Obviously that person, because of the intimate link Philly has revealed between someone's political popularity and his or her ability to comment on sports action, would do astoundingly well in that job, wouldn't he Philly? I'll bet that commentator would get 5.0 ratings, right?!
I'll leave it to someone else to remind Philly who that person was, and what happened to him.
But let's just ask our resident Oracle one direct question:
'Even if Kerry wins, which I do not foresee...'
If it turns out that Kerry does win, will you come back here and apologise for lecturing us all when your own understanding of political reality was so abberant? Or will you just sink ever further into this insane form of libertarian self-justification and claim that Kerry shouldn't have won, and it's because no one else has the quality of understanding that blah, blah, blah...?
Wait, what am I saying? You still haven't admitted you called the capture of Saddam Hussein wrong: How many US troops killed this month Philly? Well, bullshit's never welcome anywhere Philly: continue swallowing it yourself if you like, but kindly stop shoveling it around here.

I know Stan's a long shot, but does anyone know how long the odd are?
cosmic grappler
Haven't seen any recent polling, but it appears doable. The (Republican) mayor of Greeley supports Stan, and she has sided with Big Agra against local farmers.
The good people of Ault and Timnath may not like them there homos, but I suspect they'll vote their pocketbooks.
--------------------------------
June 11, 2004, Rocky Mountain News, by Deborah Frazier
Excerpt from the article:
U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave is running neck and neck with challenger Stan Matsunaka in the 4th Congressional District race, a poll revealed Thursday. The privately commissioned poll found that 48 percent of registered voters in the district favor re-electing Musgrave. But 45 percent of the 400 voters polled would support second-time Democratic challenger Stan Matsunaka, according to the poll by Ridder/Braden Inc.
Musgrave's office wasn't available for comment. Matsunaka, who announced his candidacy May 19, says he entered the race because he believes Musgrave's support has diminished significantly since 2002, when they first faced off for the district seat. "I thought I was never going to run again," he said. "Even when people approached me to run again, I've wanted to see something that said 2004 is a different year."
Poll results concerning Musgrave show:
* Of registered Democrats, 47 percent view Musgrave very unfavorably.
* Among Republican voters, 63 percent view her favorably, but 22 percent hold a negative opinion of her.
* When unaffiliated voters were asked how they viewed Musgrave, 43 percent said "unfavorably" and 41 percent viewed her favorably.
Poll results concerning Matsunaka:
* Of unaffiliated voters, Matsunaka has a 36 percent favorable rating.
* Among self-identified "weak Republicans," he earned a 43 percent favorable rating and an 11 percent unfavorable rating.

Boy, this thread did a transcontinental turn - all the way from Colorado to New Jersey in just a couple of posts. Anybody expecting to keep running the Jersey GuvLuv story for a long spell is going to be disappointed. Here in Philadelphia, the paper's already given coverage to the ex-lover's allegations; if it's running through the mainstream media that quickly, the whole mess should vanish into Tabloid Land pretty soon. And not a moment too soon to suit me.

But making your wife cry about being pressured to have sex in front of others is such a turn off.
If you wanna get into weird sexual and kinky sexual behavior, the Republicans have the Dems beat all to hell.
If you wanna get into people installing their lovers in patronage positions, the republicans have us beat all to hell.

We'd hate to be missing out upon this pearl of Right Wing Wisdom!
Granted Miss Marilyn does fully deserve to be removed, I still have to put in my vote for Trent Franks, (R-AZ, 2nd) as the most damned SOB walking. To quote from this week's New Times:
Franks didn't return repeated phone calls seeking comment. But his record speaks for itself.
The Congressman's sleaze with PAC funding and campaign finance is aggravated by two remarkable priors: First, he needs the special interest money to satisfy personal debt; second, his inner circle is, and always was, tainted by the three stooges of Arizona political ethics -- Evan Mecham, Charles Keating and J. Fife Symington III.
You add AzScam's Bobby Raymond to this unholy trio and you need a computer to tally all the indictments.
Although he relentlessly touts himself as a fiscal conservative, Congressman Franks' claim amounts to identity theft. Nearly two decades of public life rattle with back taxes due, tax liens, lawsuits, judgments, car repossession, expired auto tags and federal fines. For much of this period, he nickel-and-dimed taxpayers until you could picture him wandering around church picnics with a Post-it note on his forehead that read: "Deadbeat."
If Congressman Trent Franks was your brother-in-law, you would fire your sister.
But he's not some shirt-tail relative with a series of get-rich scams. He has moved from working oil and gas leases to serious debt on the public dole.
None of his current problems should surprise anyone in District 2, which encompasses the west side of Phoenix and Mohave County. He's been a paycheck short from day one.
A one-term state legislator elected in 1984, Franks drove, inexplicably for a young man, a large Lincoln Continental. While he sat in the statehouse, his car sat in the capitol parking lot with out-of-state Oklahoma license plates. The license plates had expired. In 1985, the tags on the car read 1982. The vehicle was never registered in Arizona. Franks explained at the time that he did not have the title.
Okay, Representative Franks, who had the title?
Actually, the bank had the title. The bank had the title because the bank had repossessed the car nearly two years before. The bank was in the process of transferring the title from Oklahoma to Arizona so that the bank could then put a lien on the Lincoln.
Representative Franks admitted at the time that the Lincoln lien was "a little embarrassing to me."
Unfortunately, Cameron, there are a lot people who eat this shit up, and the talking heads will give them an aura of legitimacy- as a legitimate opposing viewpiont in the name of fairness; as if lying was somehow worthy of merit.

"Couldn't you just ask some of your mining supporters who want to put more arsenic, cyanide and mercury in our water to pony up the difference? Maybe a coal company that wants miners to have to breath more coal dust. Perhaps some ranchers who, though very VERY independent free-market businessmen, don't actually want to pay free-market prices to graze their herds on federal lands. Maybe some of those drug companies that don't want Americans to get the same prices for their prescriptions that Canadians do.
So sorry, so sorreeee! You poor mistreated child.

Well, I don't think he was that way when he was drinking heavily. He most likely learned to socialize in an alcoholic haze, and can't socialize normally when sober. Polling in these four states will be available as a supplementary package in addition to the 16 States already being followed. We will begin our interactive survey on August 16th and continue until October 4th. Five reports will be published (1 report in August, 2 reports in September, and 2 reports in October), examining the findings in these additional states.
The most recent poll of Colorado was mid-June, and Bush was only 5 points ahead. Any takers on a bet that Kerry is ahead now?

"Blew her winger arguments right out of the water"? To you, certainly. And to the caller, too. But Malkin (translates very loosely as "bad relation", in my dictionary) was undoubtedly hearing the buzz of an annoying insect, thinking "oh, will you just shut up, fer Chrissakes?", but unable to say it out loud. Trust me, these people really really believe they're right, and evidence to the contrary....isn't. Eric Hoffer called it "fact-proof", and boy howdy are they ever.

And the person who makes a small donation becomes invested in the political process. They are more likely to become active in the campaign they support financially, as well as work like the devil to get their condidate elected.
They are more likely to be up on the issues, be able to argue for their candidate...
and other wise more active in all of the community.
Nobody attacks people who give to charity? Why should giving money to someone one politically supports be only for rich republicans who do it for business reasons?

How about the Republican that tried to lure a little girl with promises that she could "see his puppy?" How about the Republican that pleaded guilty to charges of child pornography? At least, in this case, there were consenting adults involved. Not to excuse the behavior of the governor. Repub or Dem he screwed up. No question. Whatever he gets he deserves. Seriously, what would bring a person like Malkin to the delusional point that somehow in the U S of A it is okay to herd a bunch of innocent people into concentration camps?
I can understand the have-mores backing the conservatives into order to preserve their wealth and power. I can even understand the fundies' fear of reckoning in the next world bringing them to follow the likes of Jimmy Swaggert.
But I cannot fathom the thinking of the non-rich and the non-fundie to accept and excuse the rape, torture, and murder of Iraqis and call that 'freedom'. The 'fiscally conservative' who now believes that somehow a 300 billion dollar deficit is acceptable. Or people like Malkin.

They're only doing this in states they consider to be battlegrounds. From their web site:
Wow that is interesting. I live in VA and it would just be so wonderful if the Democratic candidate could win for a change! Hey, Big John, you should come to VA now that we're looking like a swing state! "In the conservative lexicon liberal is two steps above faggot."
An interesting exercise and one I think is both easy and relatively non-confrontational, well sort of, is the next time someone starts spouting the term "Liberal" about, ask them what that actually means.
So far, the responses I have had are fairly sad. They come down to something akin to Bush at UNITY, well a Liberal is ah..Liberal..you know..?
It is stange, when someone says conservative, I have a variety of impressions to provide and none of them are mean or nasty. Now, if you say neo-conservative, that is a different matter. If I think of Republican, again, nothing terrible. Simply different views and philosophies.
But these folks take Liberal and are re-defining the term on us. We lose simply because they are heard more often.

Maybe Mustheave would have some money if she'd quit sending out so much mail that only gets thrown away. Mass mailings are sooooo 20th century.
Additional note: All of the wingnut Congressional letters read like this. And, as RMJ mentioned up thread, quite a few of them iinsert a Hillary scare. Or the Clenis. If they're really wanting to scare ya, they use both Clintons.

No, Kerry is far from toast if Osama gets caught.
1) The odds are low that he will be found.
2) It won't stop either AQ or the war.
3) What does he have to do with the coming Shia rebellion in Iraq which will make it impossible to supply our troops and leaving them in serious danger of a real defeat?
See, it only matters a little if Osama gets caught. Because he had to wage his little war in Iraq. And of course, AQ has a plan to let you know that one leader's capture stops no show.

Well, its a bit late in this thread to actually be on topic. But to the issue of the Stan's chances:
Refer to the news article above (also on www.stan2004.com) that had the poll numbers. To recap, 2 months ago (BEFORE Stan had even put his hat in the ring) the numbers were 48% MM, 45% Stan (3% MoE).
It also said, 2 months ago that 22%, of the republicans in CO-4 had an unfavorable opinion of MM. This data has been born out AT THE POLLS. In the Primary held last week MM's opponent got 23% or so. Just so you have some context, the opponent had a total campaign warchest of 1k... thats a wopping $1,000. And he wasn't some Right wing Nutbag appealing to the rabbid base, actually, he wasn't conservative at all, one of his main issues was passing single payer healthcare!
So this means that the Republicans (you know the BASE Republicans who vote in the primary) stepped into the booth, saw two names, saw that one was MM's and voted for the other guy knowing nothing about him (or if they did know anything about him, im sure it wasn't flattering to their conservative sensibilities)
To be fair, undecideds can declair at the polls here, but I doubt that played a major part because 1) there were no major ballot initiatives 2) I don't think many realized they could declair party at the polls 3) MM's opponent certainly didn't woo that many U's to show up and vote for him with only 1k spent.
ALSO, keep in mind that the conservative voters were out in force due to the close primary between Shaffer (the conservative golden boy) and Cooers (the rich, moderate guy who's plant hire's *GASP!* GAYS!!!)... and in Larimer County (where you can't throw a rotten tomato without hitting a Shaffer sign) MM's opponent did BETTER than the overall average.
So to summerize: Stan (without spending dime one) entered the race in a statistical dead heat. MM has lost 1/4 of her core Rep Base straight up (and likely more of the less active, moderate R's who didn't vote in the primary)...
Your money will help... it will go far. This race is winable but only with your "special interest" help.

k&y: we're just not clicking with each other.. I think you missed my point, which is my fault, since I'm the one trying to make it..
I'm not sure I said it was "meaningless us and them-ism", but I did say the meanings (of liberal and conservative) were irrelevant because the meanings didn't matter... how could the meanings matter? no one agrees on what the meanings are.
My point was simply, in most people's minds, they look at the world with an "us and them" mentality.. people don't care what it means to be a conservative, they flock and huddle with people who think like them, and since everyone up top says "we're conservatives!", everyone says and thinks they're conservative, without giving much thought to what it means..
It's very effective as well because anyone can be smeared with a mere label.. "he's a liberal!" see, very easy.. translation to the mindless zombie is "he's a THEM!!! we don't like THEM.. we like US"
anyway, if i haven't made my point yet I don't think I am going to be able to.. thanks for your comment..

My boss is one of them--she's as rabid a liberal as they come (she's convinced Karl Rove had a hand in the NJ guv's downfall). She voted in the Rethug primary as a sort of first salvo against MM--it probably wouldn't hit, but if it did, it'd be sweet.
That said, I think Stan has a much better chance now than he did in his first round with Marilyn. People in this district simply didn't realize how rabid she was. Now they do, and they're listening to people like the Republican mayor of Greeley, the conservative-leaning (usually) Greeley Tribune, and every other newspaper in the district, all of whom have said Marilyn's a wacko and even (gasp!) a Democrat would be better.
She's going down--it's just going to take more turkee for Stan.
