Ooh, wow - Foghat! Can't wait to miss that show!

"Would it kill you to play some Foghat?"

Slowride, take it easy.

This news is just gonna kill The Gin'rul.

GravatarThey're fools for the city.

GravatarI just wanna make love...

GravatarNotice to all protesters:

Don't do anything stupid keep it peaceful. Back off any confrontation with law enforcement.

Remember; The 'government' has the military and the police on their side and right now the 'government' are the Repugs.

Keep calm and don't forget to hum (aum) at about 80 decibles.

GravatarWhen Lonesome Dave passed, it was the end of Foghat as we loved them.
RIP, Dave.

GravatarFools for the city yes, fools for GW, uh uh...

I hereby take back all the bad jokes.

Seriously though, how horrible do you have to be for even Foghat to distance themselves from you. Think about it.

Gravatar>Think about it.

seriously.

GravatarI guess they're not tools for the shitty, after all.

GravatarHey, make fun of them. Their live album during the 70's was killer. The best boogie woogie rock and roll band ever. Sadly, their time has passed, as has Lonesome Dave, and they play bars. At least they have not taken the Dennis Miller route.

GravatarOT:
BBC report on upcoming protests in NYC.

GravatarFog-Fucking-Hat? HAHAHAHAZHAHA! There goes the bush victory.

GravatarOT: Bumiller. Look how she screws this one up. The day before this interview, the NYT had published a story about how the adminstration's own science advisor had reported to congress what everyone has known for years, that CO2 is a major cause of global warming. Here's the interview with a few notes in bold:

On Global Warming:
Ms. Bumiller: Mr. President, why did your administration change its position on what causes global warming?
THE PRESIDENT: I don't think we did.
Yes, they did, kind of. He didn't get briefed?
Ms. Bumiller: According to —
THE PRESIDENT: I don't think so, Elisabeth.
Ms. Bumiller: You said that it's almost certainly carbon monoxide — which you hadn't said in the past, carbon dioxide.
no, Bumiller, it was his science advisor, and no-one mentioned carbon monoxide. You mangled that one.
THE PRESIDENT: I think that was my position during the campaign, if I'm not mistaken.
? whatever.
Ms. Bumiller: It changed —
Scotty jumps in with a lie
MR. McCLELLAN: You're talking about the National Academy of Science report?
No, she's not. She's talking about the report to congress detailed in the NYT. So what does she say?
Ms. Bumiller: Yes, yes.
Yes, yes? Whaaat? You know that's not it. Good job, Bumiller. Take it away, Scotty...
MR. McCLELLAN: We've always talked about how that would - we'd be guided by their science on the issue, and that's why the President has done a lot in terms of climate change, advancing the science of climate change, and also doing more research —
Ah yes, the president 'advancing the science... right.
THE PRESIDENT: Let me get back with you on that, because I think you might — I don't know why you said what you just said.
Finally, Bumiller attempts to explain:
Ms. Bumiller: Well, we had a story in the paper this morning saying that you issued a report saying —
too late, you blew it Bumiller. Now you get a sarcastic slapdown...
THE PRESIDENT: Oh, okay, well, that's got to be true.

On mistakes made in his first term:
Ms. Bumiller: At your last big press conference, you said that you couldn't think of any mistakes you had made. It's been about three or four months. Can you think of any now? It's been a long time.
THE PRESIDENT: You mean other than having this interview?
Prince George ends with a 'joke' telling Bumiller he was displeased with her questions, inept as they were. Can you imagine what that plucky Irish reporter might have done with this....?

GravatarIt's not the protestors who will do anything stupid. It is the RNC agent provocateurs who will do something stupid or violent while wearing a Greenpeace shirt.

GravatarHey, can anyone get corroboration that Bobby Womack supports Bush? Are they sure it isn't Lee Ann? I just don't see the singer Of "Across 110th Street" being a republican. Then again, maybe he's an Ed Koch-like 9/11 reactionary...

GravatarWow. Those Repubs sure know how to counter the Boss.

Back in their heyday, I saw Foghat a couple times, with Lonesome Dave. Great live r n'r band...their albums didn't capture their energy...it's hard to imagine them the same now, but at least they aren't teaming up with, hmmmm...Randy Travis AND Booby Womack? Woohoo. "Oh yeah? Well, WE'RE gonna team up together and show all you yankees how 80's country is still HOT!" I'm sure that Bruce, REM, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne et al are now worried...

Gravatari like anon, uses html, and makes bluemiller look moronic at the same time.

heh.

Gravatar"I guess they're not tools for the shitty, after all."

Thank you.

GravatarHey, can anyone get corroboration that Bobby Womack supports Bush? Are they sure it isn't Lee Ann? I just don't see the singer Of "Across 110th Street" being a republican. Then again, maybe he's an Ed Koch-like 9/11 reactionary...

GravatarI saw them opening for Blue Oyster Cult about 16-17 years ago, now there's a 70s double-bill for you. I don't know enough about Foghat to tell you if Lonesome Dave was still around, wasn't paying much attention to them. I was far more concerned with getting that joint to roll just right.

GravatarCBS is reporting that a Defense Intelligence Agency analyst detailed to Undersecretary of Defense for Planning Douglas Feith's Office of Special Plans is under FBI investigation for spying for Israel.

-And that young man's name was Golan Cipal?...And now you have the rest of the story.

Gravatardidnt Golan tour with foghat for a while?

GravatarMISCALCULATIONS

So in an interview in the NYTimes, Bush said he miscalculated about the Iraq invasion aftermath. Is there any reason why the Dems shouldn't seize on that word and repeat it ad nauseam in every single talking opportunity for the next 20 days, like the repubs did with "sensitive" and "flip-flop"?

And the sad followup question is, is there any reason to expect them to?

http://www.etaiwannews.com/World.../ 1093662218.htm

GravatarIt looks the Bushies are trying to claim any of the bands that suppor the troops supports Bush. Whatever. I guess the GOP can roll what's left of The Ramones for a support Bush tour.

GravatarUnintentional humor I just ran across from actor Vincent Gallo, who's garnering ink for having his Republican privates munched by Chloe Sevigny in his upcoming Brown Turkey. This guy proves that there are even more ridiculous ways to be stupid than simply going ass-out as a dumb cracker, a'la Kid Rock and Charlie Daniels.

NYTs: Why are you a Republican?

Gallo - If we were going to see a show of Dennis Hopper's photographs, do you think Richard Nixon or Bill Clinton would be more sensitive to the work? I see Nixon as an intellectual. I consider Bill Clinton a huckster.

Gravatar>Gallo...

dear god, how did they beat us again?

Gravatar"Gallo? How did they beat us again ?"

Family values...

GravatarI see Nixon as an intellectual. I consider Bill Clinton a huckster.
--Vince "The only way I can get head is to write it into one of my screenplays" Gallo

Coming from a huckster, that says a lot!

GravatarAir America had it right: A Foghat performance at the RNC would have deprived a county fair somewhere of its headliner.

GravatarI wish all you little fucks who wouldn't make a pimple on a good musician's ass would take a lot of the comments I've read on this back.
Musicians get old and people's taste in music change. The 70's was long ago my friends.

Shorter bluesman: Some day, you to will shit your pants. thankyou.

GravatarYay, Foghat! I had been disappointed to see them on the list of bad guys.

GravatarIncidentally, the Bobby Womack reference teamed him with Randy Travis and ...that's an obvious error by somebody who doesn't have a clue about Bobby, because it then jokes about bringing back '80s country. Confusion with Lee Ann Womack (no relation to Bobby, thank god) .

Bobby Womack fans should check out the new Los Lobos album on which he appears, along with Elvis C.,Tom Waits, Dave Alvin, Ruben Blades, Mavis Staples and a bunch of others. Good stuff...

(And I'm so fucking glad I've never, ever listened to Foghat. Canned Heat and the Allmans pretty much satiated whatever appetite I had for "boogie bands". That shit usually got old by the time you had to flip the LP.)

GravatarGallo want turkee?

GravatarAnd I'm so fucking glad I've never, ever listened to Foghat...That shit usually got old by the time you had to flip the LP.

Not if you were smoking enough dope.

Gravatarre: "only way I can get head is to write it in one of my screenplays" Gallo.

I think you're being a bit harsh regarding Gallo's potential avenues to gratification.

For example, aren't you forgetting the prostitutes with AIDS who want to seduce Republicans ?

Gravatar"not if you smoked enough dope"

One of the reasons I quit back in 1970...

Gravatari never liked foghat much either, but now at least i know they're not touring for the enemy!

Gravatarand though i hate to say it...that's more than i can say for the motor city madman

Gravatar"motor city madman"...

I'm GLAD that stupid fuck is on the other side.

Gravatar For example, aren't you forgetting the prostitutes with AIDS who want to seduce Republicans ?

Dunno about the AIDS thing cuz it's really a kinda harsh thing to say, but I am thinking of an HBO Special; "Rethug Hookers at the Point".

A bunch of toothless ho's running around with pink tube tops and shiny red mini skirts and smudged lip stick.

Film at eleven.

GravatarThe best boogie woogie rock and roll band ever.

Talk about damning with faint praise...

GravatarAnd Gallo's a hack.

The problem with this boboworld is that our expectations have been lowered to such a point that he can't see that the Preznut is a huckster lower than Klinton

GravatarThanks for the update, A. This whole thing was causing a musician friend o' mine -- one of those guys with encyclopedic knowledge of rock 'n roll, memorabilia all over his house, and an entire room devoted to album storage -- serious cognitive dissonance. He just shook his head like he had a bug stuck in his ear and said, "Foghat? FOGHAT?" It was a relief to be able to mail him that link. (The "Foghataboutit" bit will make him happy, too.)

Gravatardc-too ... thanks for the vine on the Clift article.

I wholeheartedly agree with the reporting; Big John is still in the lead and the uphill climb is daunting for the Rethugs so they had to go noo-clear much faster than expected.

GravatarI saw them opening for Blue Oyster Cult about 16-17 years ago, now there's a 70s double-bill for you.

Cool. I sat the 'hat back up BOC way back in '75 at the North Hall in Memphis. Sadly, it got torn down when the Pyramid went up. Great place to see a concert.

And I agree that the live album from late 77 was a blast.

Honey Hush.

GravatarI was just repeating "information" about next weeks festivities from links on the RNC website...

GravatarTypical SCLM miscombobulation. We said FOGHEAD not Foghat will be touring with us. You know,...McCain.

"Steady Bumbling in Uncertain Times!"

GravatarOT - (if anything in a thread about foghat can be OT) Republican's spending 3 times as much partying like the corporate elitists they are

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/2...28money.html? hp

GravatarI love it when the Rethugs have to spend tons of money on anything. Because inside it has to be killing them that all of the stealing they did has to roll up to the big fella.

It's gotta Sopranos feel to it; yep, they gotta feed the boss, but the percentage is killing them.

GravatarOT --

Well motherfuck.

Our car's been stolen.

It happened sometime last night (it's a little after 9:00 here).

If anyone sees a slightly beaten up, white '89 Camry 6 cylinder LE, let me know.

GravatarMore about former Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes from Palast.

The happy client paid Barnes, the keeper of Governor Bush’s secret, a fee of over $23 million. Barnes, not surprisingly, denies that Bush took care of his client in return for Barnes’ silence. However, confronted with the evidence, the former Lt. Governor now admits to helping the young George stay out of Vietnam.

Look, I don’t care if President Bush cowered and ran from Vietnam. I sure as hell didn’t volunteer … but then, my daddy didn’t send someone else in my place. And I don’t march around aircraft carriers with parachute clips around my gonads talking about war and sacrifice.

GravatarSo Foghat is out as headliner for the RNC in New York. I guess that means they're stuck with Wayne Newton.

Gravatar"boogie-woogie rock?!?!"

wtf - and you idiots hated disco? dancing to rock is like f*cking to hardcore!

foghat sucked in the 70's, they suck now, they ALWAYS sucked!

how about Grateful Dead, Yes, Fugazi, the clash, the police, Lou Reed, on and on.

most pop(ular) shit has always sucked always will - dont forget it!

GravatarYou know you've wasted way too much money on your partying when an invoice from Kid Rock shows up in Monday's mail...

(I'm trying to keep this thread OT)

Gravatar>Their live album during the 70's was killer

Yeah, in fact I very suddenly got in the mood for some of that at ear-bleeding levels.

(I better get to it quick, we're having the type of storm in W. Pa that says, where I live, "Break out the candles.")

GravatarOT, but has anyone else read the latest from the host of the PHC:

http://www.inthesetimes.com/site...in/article/979/

GravatarDeterministic...

Of course most shit that isn't pop(ular) sucks as well...

and I can't understand the meaning of any sentence that seperates The Clash from The Police with nothing but a comma...

GravatarDid you know that Foghat is from England?

Gravatar>what that plucky Irish reporter might have done

Hmm, my experience of women who trace their lineage to the Emerald Isle doesn't exactly conjure up the word "plucky."

Whatever is short for "will rip off your balls and shove them up your rectum if pissed off" would be more like it.

GravatarDeterministic...

That's ok guy, not to worry, Did you know most people who can't dance, can't fuck eather. Though you mite like to know that.

GravatarRats! I guess this means I have stop work on my designs for the "ASSHAT - TOOLS FOR THE SHITTY" album cover. It was going to be a thing of beauty.

GravatarGo to the NPR Weekend Edition page and click the audio clip "Annoying Campaign Songs" from this morning's' show for a good laugh...

http://www.npr.org/rundowns/rund...ug-2004& prgId=7

Gravatar"ASSHAT - TOOLS FOR THE SHITTY" album cover.

Oooh. This is a great idea--a cover album of Foghat tunes. Like the hipster cover albums of Johnny Cash tunes, only in reverse.

Question is, who will do the covers? How about "Fool for the City" interpreted by Charlie Daniels? Who else?

GravatarWhether they sucked or not isn't the point, the point is they stood right up and said "No, we don't support this pinhead." Considering where their career is now, that takes guts IMAO.

Gravatarthey used to mock those bands who played the county fair circuit on the old daily show--i think it was when craig kilborn still hosted it.

"get ready to rock on down the river with the little river band!"

"huey lewis...and the news!"

"foghat...FOGHAT!"

GravatarGee, I guess Foghat doesn't suck as much as I thought they did yesterday. They're back to sucking as much as as I thought they did last week.

GravatarHows about a hardcore punk version of "I just wanna make love to you"?

And, yes, I know that's not their song, but they did popularize it for the hard rock listeners.

GravatarHeard on Air America:

Police Dispatchers working overtime will be paid straight time, thanks to the new overtime rules.

GravatarPolice dispatchers working the RNC beat I mean.

Gravatarfoghat was alright, but they were no supertramp.

GravatarPolice Dispatchers working overtime will be paid straight time

I'm sure some will view it as a small price to pay for a chance to beat up some "hippies".

GravatarBob Rivers has a link to their hits and a few others here

GravatarSomewhere out there, the boys from Grand Funk Railroad have started sitting anxiously by the phone.

I'm getting closer to my home....

GravatarGOP Celebrity Alert -

Daize Shayne, the top female surfer, will be appearing at the convention with Arnold. Shayne is branching out with the release of a CD...which contains the following songs: Crazy, Such A Mess, Falling Down, Bathroom and Take Me Away.

Foghat, eat your heart out...

GravatarOT

Hate to go off topic but I'd like to see a discussion of Powell canceling his trip to the closing ceremony of the Olympic games. CNN just reported it without making any reference to protests against his visit in Greece. Their report said that he was canceling the trip in order to keep closer ties on developments in Sudan and Najaf.

Bull. The trip was cancelled to avoid the spectacle of a stadium full of people booing the US Secretary of State before 10's of millions of viewers world wide during the closing ceremonies.

What a pitiful state we have come to when our Secretary of State is so unwelcome even in allied countries.

Good for the protesters.

GravatarAnd Powell's the POPULAR one...

GravatarIncluding Protest by the Olympic
Committee to Bush for refusing to stop using the Olympic symbol in campaign ads

Of course NothingButCrap the official network of no live coverage
could have refused the ad as well

but whores of a feather

Anything to do with Bush and Rover sleaziness doesn’t raise an eyebrow, people long expect them to be rat weasels and Bush’s smarminess and wiggly weasling is also well known, nobody is gonna expect anything but sleaze from them.
......
But why did McCain totally undermine himself in this way, they trashed his own daughter, they trashed his record, they questioned his temperament and even hinted at his sanity, at least he had some future as a credible elder statesman, why did he squander that to go down the scuzzy path.
.....
As for Bob Dole too, he was getting a rep as a man about town, somebody who was cool, who could make stuff happen, now he tumbled down into the realms of creepy party apparatchik, dutifully stooping to do the scuzzy work for his Dear Leader, scuzz and all, ick, ick, ick.
.....

Gravatarmondo dentro:
I love that idea! Unfortunately, I'm just an old seventies relic with a comercial art jones. I actually bought "Fool for the City" when it first came out. I wish we could make that album real - get each of these Repug tools to cover one song on the album and release it under that name. Oh well, but thank you for saving this week's worthless self-amusement project for me; my pitiful existance is so much poorer without them.

GravatarWhat a pitiful state we have come to when our Secretary of State is so unwelcome even in allied countries.

Good for the protesters.
Tom | Email | Homepage | 08.28.04 - 1:00 pm | #

Yeah, I agree, that is exactly the issue, all the bogus beatifics and beaming Bambino cuddly wuddly that Bushies will try to pull over us next week, they can’t even send the most popular member of their cabinet to the most inclusive and festive of international occasions, sheesh.
.....

Gravatarhey, let's not ruin this thread with serious political discussions or whatever--we're just making fun of has-been bands here.

GravatarI would like to see Powell resign before the election. I believe that that would be the final nail in Bush's coffin. This is the final heroic act this guy can do for his country. Otherwise his reputation will be forever ruined.

I have a good friend who works at the State Dept who disagreed with me a year ago on the advisability of Powell to resign. She said that a lot of people at the State Dept feel that Powell is the main reason that we have not already hit North Korea. Very scary thought. Even she agrees that a late October Powell resignation would be ideal.

Gravatar"One of the most thoughtful politicians in Washington doesn't believe in the theory of evolution."

Priceless opening line from conservative intellectual David Brooks in today's Times.

Kinda makes me wonder - if David Brooks and Vincent Gallo went to see an exhibition of Dennis Hopper's photographs... Oh nevermind !

GravatarThe Iraqi soccer team dissed Bush too when he suggested he might show up for one of their games.

They basically said that Saddam was a monster but Bush destroyed their country and they did not want him to use them for his own political gain.

GravatarZZTop are they still on?
I'd pay good money to see Ashcroft and Falwell gettin down with their scantilly clad, "She got legs" chicks.

GravatarThis is the final heroic act this guy can do for his country.

In my opinion, it'd be his first.

GravatarI'm GLAD that stupid fuck is on the other side.

I hate the guy's politics (I blame the NRA, mostly), but I confess I still rock out to "Journey to the Center of the Mind".

dancing to rock is like f*cking to hardcore!

The trick is to do it in half-time. That probably works for dancing, too.

GravatarAnd because of the stakes, because of where the Lying and Weaseling and the Distortions have led us and because all these people who are now lying and weaseling themselves and/or de facto supporting the scuzzy Bush against the heroic Kerry, there is no more middle ground for them, they coulda stayed above the fray, they coulda tried to walk the middle ground, but in a way, it is good they declared themselves for the scuzz.
.....
That way when we move forward there will be no doubt, these are the people of the past and we are moving on with the people of the future.
......

GravatarI find Colin Powell "personally likeable" - for what that's worth - and he's been consistently decent on a handful of issues. I can even forgive a military guy like Powell his soldiering under Reagan and Bush Sr.

But his defining moment was gays in the military...not only did he come out shamefully on the wrong side, but he was openly insubordinate to The Commander in Chief.

At that point he proved that when push-comes-to-shove, he's not just a disappointing ass-kisser, he's a partisan hack. Like McCain, I think he's a guy who will only get in a tussle with the thugs in his party when the issue at hand is his self-regard.

As a longtime customer, I'm disappointed to see that you are giving a public forum to the utterly discredited and dishonest authors of "Unfit to Serve." As a private enterprise, you have the right to host whomever you please, but I feel strongly that it's a failure of ethics and citizenship to offer even the slightest amount of implicit support to the thoroughly debunked claims of these men.

In this election year, there are many life-and-death issues that require our full attention; information about these issues needs to be presented honestly, in a way that encourages clear thinking and good decision-making. I'm very sad that instead of promoting intelligent debate on real issues, you've chosen instead to wallow in the gutter with discredited partisan hacks. Accordingly, I don't feel that I can continue to patronize your store at this time.

Gravatarhere's a funny whine from slate about gop entertainers:

The "celebrities" who love the GOP.
By Rob Long
Updated Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at 3:27 PM PT

Even for me, an ultra-loyal Republican, the two creepiest words in the English language are "Christian rock."

I've listened to my fair share of it, too—long drive across the country; busted iPod—and there's something so weird about it. It sounds like regular bad music when you first tune in. The lyrics always seem like regular bad music lyrics, too—"I feel your body next to mine/ And that makes my whole life shine"—but after a second or two you realize that they're singing about Jesus, not some girl named Mandy, and the whole thing just seems, well, creepy. Because rock music—and most other forms of entertainment, when you really think about it—is fundamentally about carnal desire. And Jesus, when you really think about it, is fundamentally not.
[...]
I'm aware that I'm going to sound like one of those liberal Democrat media snobs—which is unfair, because I'm a conservative Republican media snob—but who are these people? I live in Venice, Calif., so I happen to know who Daize Shayne is—Google her yourself, if you're interested—but most of the other names are drawing big blanks. There are rumors, of course, that Britney Spears is a closet Bushie—which might be true; she's from Orlando, right?—and we've all seen Ted Nugent's Republican spiel. But the sad truth is, the real difference between Democrats and Republicans is that their celebrities are, like, actually famous and ours are, well, singing weirdly erotic songs about Our Savior.

GravatarJessica made some bread.
CALL YOUR CABLE COMPANY, TELL THEM TO SHOVE IT, YOU WILL NOT PAY FOR THE RIGHT WING SHIT THEY ARE PRESENTING.

GravatarI read that article at Slate, googled Daize Shayne out of curiosity and came up with the following information.

She's the top female surfer and will be appearing at the convention with Arnold. Shayne is branching out with the release of a CD which contains the following songs: Crazy, Such A Mess, Falling Down, Bathroom and Take Me Away.

You don't offer correspondence courses, do you? I'd like to learn me how to write real good insults like you done gone and did, there.

GravatarJessica made some bread.

Sure she did. That's not quite the same as having her loyalty "bought" by Bushco, though.

What are you...14 years old?

GravatarI saw them opening for Blue Oyster Cult about 16-17 years ago, now there's a 70s double-bill for you

I saw them with Head East and REO Speedwagon in a sold out Salt Palace. Twenty-five years later, I saw them with about 40 other middle aged gus at a fair. Saddest thing I've ever seen.

GravatarPhilalethes, shouldn't that read 'Unfit for Command' ?

foghat, great band, when i was 16, 30 years ago.

GravatarBut the sad truth is, the real difference between Democrats and Republicans is that their celebrities are, like, actually famous and ours are, well, singing weirdly erotic songs about Our Savior.

Christian rock is creepy and awful, alright...but that's mostly 'cause it's really, really bad. Some of the best religious poetry there is uses erotic language: George Herbert, Rumi, John Donne, and so forth. There's a long tradition of that in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.

Kind of OT, he reason I don't want to be a Republican is that you're not allowed to learn anything that contradicts what you already believe. Whole areas of internal and external experience are closed off to you. What a poor sort of life to lead!

GravatarPhilalethes, shouldn't that read 'Unfit for Command' ?

Yeah, sorry about that. I'm all typos this morning.

GravatarSo, Anonymous can't dance ether?

GravatarWhat a trip down memory lane. I saw Blue Oyster Cult at the Bonneville Raceway. They were warming up for Blak Sabbath. Sabbath didn't show up so BOC did a second set. We had a thunderstorm halfway through it and they had to stop. Being Mormons, we all thought God caused the rain because he was angry.

I saw April Wine warm up for Foreigner. They kicked Foreiner's ass. Same thing for AC/DC and Aerosmith. Of course that's when Aerosmith was strung out.

I also saw the Who when Townsend was too wasted to play. Daltry was screaming at him all night.

It takes the worst of mainstream pop and then sucks what little life and joy is out of that. My brother ran sound for a CCM concert in Alabama once. He said it was one of the most bizzare things he'd ever seen in his life. People wouldn't applaud between songs; they'd pray.

As for Foghat, I have to wonder just how that rumor got started. Why Foghat, for cryin' out loud? Why not just shoot the wad and say Skynyrd is playing it.

And for the record, Brownsville Station and The James Gang were better boogie rock bands. So was Humble Pie, and anyone who can't dance to rock & roll, well...I guess some people got no soul.

And finally...Lee Ann Womack is playing the RNC. Bobby Womack isn't. Lee Ann Womack is a talent-show finalist gone horribly wrong, but Bobby Womack kicks ass.

Gravatarhurl invective like monkey's hurl shit! See how clever I am!

Yes, that's what I did. I "hurled invective" in response to your well-reasoned, elegant, airtight argument about monkeys flying out of people's asses.

Despite the fact that I'm not a Democrat (sorry, anon!), I reckon I owe the DNC $10.00 for feeding this witless parasite. For the rest of you, the going rate is, I believe, a buck a post.

GravatarThe James Gang were better boogie rock bands.

Hell, so was Black Oak Arkansas, if it comes to that. I pretty much detest the white-boy metallic boogie-blues genre from A to Z, but Foghat's not even in the running, for my money. Still, de gustibus blah blah blah.

GravatarAnyone know the actual itinerary? They should be met with an appropriate response, at least...

That's why I said I was late getting to it. They're appearing today! Still, Mediamatters.org has an activism alert, and I think it's got some upcoming dates...

GravatarPhilalethes,
I think my honeymoon with classic rock ended when I heard the full version of Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick. Unnecessary. Sure, the Allman's had a 33-minute "Mountain Jam", but if anything can good can be said about the punk and new wave movements of the early '80s, it's that they brought pop songs back to a reasonable lenghth. My lead singers a bit bent out of shape because our album's only 36 minutes long. I told him that's how long the early Stones and Beatles records were. Get in there, get 'er done and get the fuck out before they get bored is my motto.

GravatarBarry Freed:
Mondo Dentro and I already settled that. We're going to have all the Repug "entertainers" cover Foghat songs and release it as "ASSHAT - TOOLS FOR THE SHITTY". I hope to have that album cover done soon.

Gravatarcharley,
Trust me, is no worries. When I was 16, I wasn't listening to Pearl Jam or Guns 'n' Roses. I was listening to stuff like the James Gang, Skynyrd, Zeppelin and Foghat. In fact, the first song my brother and I played together in front of people (he on guitar, me on bass) was the James Gang's "Funk #49". The only "new" bands I listened to were groups like the Black Crowes or Cry Of Love, who were basically retro-classic rock outfits. I have a soft place in my heart for that stuff.

I caught email hell from some dude the other day because he thought I was making fun of classic rock. Well, I was, but I remind everyone that when it comes to listening to "old music", I'm in no position to cast asparagus on anyone.

Gravataranything can good can be said about the punk and new wave movements of the early '80s, it's that they brought pop songs back to a reasonable lenghth.

Absolutely. And usually didn't have guitar solos. And had lyrics that were a bit more interesting than "Lordy mama, I'm gonna ball you all night long, heh heh."

Obviously, I like most of that 70s/80s stuff--bands like Wire or X or the Germs or the Fall or Rudimentary Peni or what have you--LOTS more than you do...but still, I'm glad you can understand what a relief it was to hear concision and energy after a solid decade of lazy, witless jamming!

GravatarOkay, I confess -- I actually like "Thick as a Brick."

GravatarPhilalethes,
Hey, man, Jon Doe's one of my bass heroes. He's got a great sound. Still, ya gotta remember, for the most part, I come from the other end of things: blues and country. I was into the blues before I was heavy into blues-rock (though hearing the latter led to more exploration of the former). Muddy Waters and Hank Williams both kept it short and sweet.

Being a bass player that prefers melodic lines and locking in with the kick drum over chops, jamming can get pretty tedious for me pretty quick. It's one thing to build a solid groove so the lead instruments can stretch out a bit; it's quite another to noodle off into the atmosphere with no rhyme or reason. Actually, one of my main beefs with most punks bands is the same thing that makes most jam bands completely unlistenable to my ears: the bass and the drums aren't locked in and there's no groove. If you ain't doing that, in my opinion, all the bass player is doing is taking up space on the stage.

Gravatarsome one mentioned kent state in here the other day. so i picked up my martin and learned to bang out the chords to Ohio. great song to play when you are sitting their listening, being angered, by the swift boat liars.

of course gets a little scary when you realize the import of the words.

and god knows, foghat is not coming back, but neil put out some horrible albums in the 80s, and so did dylan, but in the 90s they redeemed them selves.

"it's better to burn out, then to fade away" but the reality is, it mostly just fades away.

GravatarDid Kerry lie about his service in vietnam?

OK. I'll play along. Let's say Kerry did lie about his service in Vietnam.

Note the word "service". It's in what we call "bold face".

And, President Codpiece? Did he lie about his service? Uh, no. BECAUSE THEIR WASN'T ANY.

So, now what was your point exactly?

GravatarFoghat was great in its day. Sadly that day was 30 years ago, and even I don't listen to 70'a music for its musical value now. Just the memories. I swear I can smell the old mexican weed whenever I hear that music. Especially Grand Funk Railroad, you know the yellow vinyl album? Aaaahhh.

GravatarI got roped into being the concert promoter (for Louie Gavrel promotions) in our college town during the late 70's for Stepenwolf and Santa Esmerelda. Did the ticket sales and radio spots. They were already has beens, and only sold about a thousand tickets. One hell of an after party though.

Which is pretty ironic, considering how liberal the late Ronnie Van Zant was. He wrote gun control songs ("Saturday Night Special"), songs about the environment ("All I Can Do Is Write About It"), songs about the effects of poverty on the inner city ("Things Going On"), anti-big business tunes ("Workin' For MCA") and working-man anthems ("Cry For The Bad Man"). The band also played benefits for Jimmy Carter back in '76. I realize most people see Skynyrd as a redneck group - mainly because of "Sweet Home Alabama" and the chuckleheads that come to the shows - but listening to the actual songs paints a much different picture.

Course, that's Skynyrd in the '70s. Current Skynyrd is definately playing up the beer-drinkin', hell-raisin' redneck image to the hilt. They put out a song called "Red, White & Blue" last year that was just flat out insulting to the memory of Ronnie. I'm not the one to knock anyone who's doing what they enjoy doing, but still...man, they've put out some shitty stuff in the past 10 or so years. There's like two original members left, too (guitarist Gary Rossington and pianist Billy Powell, or last I checked anyway). It's sorta like The Who in that one almost wishes they'd let it die with a little dignity.

But hey, what do I know? They're playing stadiums and I'm playing bars for free beer.

GravatarSaw 'Thick As A Brick' tour in Madison, 72? Best concert ever. Saw Ian again 4 years ago at RockFest northern Wisconsin. He had hardly lost a beat, just danced a little slower. What a talent.

GravatarOn Black Oak Arkansas -

Jim Dandy Mangrum was the prototype for David Lee Roth. Think about it...

And Foghat were originallt all Brits - but by the time they were doing shit like 'Slow ride,' they had changed lineups and stole Nick Jameson from a Philly band called The American Dream (if you listen really closely to the verse in 'Slow Ride,' you'll hear a dial phone used as a percussion instrument - which was done first on a song on the first American Dream LP, which was produced by Todd Rundgren). Foghat, AD, and Rundgren were all on Bearsville at the time...

Man, I am way too familiar with this shit. But I grew up in Philly playing shows with The Nazz and American Dream and Hall & Oates, so you can't blame me.

GravatarGeeno,

Yeah, I saw that but I've been making that semi-serious joke for over a year now and I couldn't bear to see it stolen like that

Philalethes,

It seems we have similar tastes in music. Among other things.

Backslider,

Listen to Eater, great classic English punk band, I think they were all around 15 years old at the time (like X-Ray Spex). Awesome bass lines that drive the whole song.

GravatarBackslider, have you seen "Rising Low?" It's a fascinating documentary about bass players. It's a little weird at times like when Les Claypool measures their auras, but very interesting.

It's mostly interviews with famosus bass players who came together to do a Gov't Mule album in honor of Allen Woody after his untimely death. Such greats as Bootsie Collins, John Entwistle, and Flea discuss their techniques and influences. Great stuff.

GravatarOh, come on AsH! This is a vacation thread. The subject line should have been a hint. Serious political discussion is going on in other threads. It's a kick and relax day.

Gravatarsome one mentioned kent state in here the other day. so i picked up my martin and learned to bang out the chords to Ohio. great song to play when you are sitting their listening, being angered, by the swift boat liars

GravatarPhilalethes,
Hey, man, Jon Doe's one of my bass heroes. He's got a great sound. Still, ya gotta remember, for the most part, I come from the other end of things: blues and country.

Yeah, I know. I'm basically coming from the same place in a lot of ways. I'm not really into the electric blues, but I love people like Skip James and Blind Blake and so forth. And country stuff too. And Western Swing a la Jimmie Revard or milton Brown.

Really, all I want out of rock music is energy, or failing that, interesting songwriting. I'm not too worried about "soul" or "grooves" or whatever...nice if they're there, but OK if they're not as long as something else gets my attention. But despite not having the same imperatives as you, what you're saying makes complete sense. And jeez, when you come right down to it, the older I get, it's harder to listen to ANYTHING for extended periods of time. Even the rock stuff I like, I want to hear a few songs and move on to something else...

You know, part of that is just the longer length of CDs. It's oppressive! Even on the reissue stuff I'm so crazy about, it's just too fucking long...you can get tired of ANYONE in 80 minutes. I think you're right on the money, keeping your CD short. People will complain...but they'd complain even more if you padded it out with filler just 'cause the space was there.

GravatarDid Kerry lie about his service in vietnam?

who cares, he was there. he got shot at,and had to kill, it was one of the more dangerous missions.

and had to kill. maybe their are some posters here who have had that experience, i don't know. i do know that he came home and condemned the poor leadership that forced young men to have to kill and die in that swamp. 58,000 boys tossed into the meatgrinder, that all reasonable people today know was an illigitimate and pointless war. i don't think the 2 to 3 million, many obviously innocent vietnamese should be forgotten either. same goes for iraq.

GravatarCharley wasn't in Alabama. Charley didn't listen to Skinnard. He was on the Mekong.

Gravatarpatriotboy,
Yeah, I've seen it. Saw it before it was released, actually. I knew Allen a little bit - know main Mule man Warren Haynes a little better 0 and I'm friendly with Widespread Panic's bass player Dave Schools. Woody was a great guy and an awesome bass player. Like the late Berry Oakley, he was a guy who could do the chops thing and the melodic thing at the same time. The Mule was another band I loved when I was in high school. They've gotten a bit too jammy for my tastes - and there's way too many frat rats at the shows - but Warren's a helluva musician and a helluva nice guy.

GravatarHere's a review for Rising Low:

Mike Gordon’s Tribute Documentary to Alan Woody

Gov’t Mule has taken on a new image since their bassist, Alan Woody passed away unexpectedly in 2000. Since then, the remaining pair- frontman guitar and lyrics Warren Haynes and legendary drummer Matt Abts – have put together two compilations, The Deep End Vol’s. 1 and 2 , with every bassist imaginable to fill the void of Woody’s absence. This movie is less about the albums, which Gordon was supposed to be documenting, and more about the loss of a friend as well as the mystical lure of the bass. From Phil Lesh’s take on aura color testing while playing the bass, to some of the roadies’ fond memories and footage of Woody, this tribute is truly just that.

Woody took his playing and his mentors to heart (and a big one at that), and Haynes and Abts wanted to get the sound from his all-time favorite bassists. You see clips of Roger Glover of Deep Purple, Chris Squire from Yes, Jack Bruce from Cream, (the late) John Entwhistle of the Who, of course Mike Gordon of Phish, Les Claypool of Primus, Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many, many more. It’s a music-lovers’ psychedelic dream that makes you tingle with the delight of being right there in the recording studio with all your favorites. Buy it with The Deep End set for full gratification.

GravatarThey put out a song called "Red, White & Blue" last year that was just flat out insulting to the memory of Ronnie.

Tell me about it. Despicable fucking pandering, is what that was. We have a classic rock station out here in CA which I used to listen to for Auld Lang Syne (why else?), and they added that fucker to the rotation! Assholes! Man, there's nothing more gross and touchy-feely maudlin than that type of lugubrious redneck faux-patriotism. And you know, other dinosaur bands were putting out CDs, but it's not like THEY were getting tracks added. Just Skynyrd.

I like how the "white" is supposed to be their hair. But then "We've always been red, white and blue." Huh? Coded white-pride bullshit, if you ask me. And all that shit about, "When we hang out, it's with folks just like you." Yeah...whatever, goons.

Man, they were playing it so much in the run up to the war that I had to switch stations. Couldn't take it.

GravatarI met Haynes and Woody while we were standing in line for burritos prior to a show at the Fenix Underground in Seattle. Really nice guys. The show was great.

GravatarPhilalethes,
I think bands are finally starting to get away from the idea that they have to have long albums just because there's so much space on a CD. This is a good thing. As for the whole reissue deal, I like what Elvis Costello did with his recent reissue spate: two discs, one is the original album and the other is outtakes and demos and whatnot. Frankly, if it was left in the can, most of the time there's a reason for it. Rhino Handmade recently put out Doug Sahm's two Atlantic records out on CD - Doug Sahm And Band and Texas Tornado - for the first time ever on CD. It's got killer packaging and sound, and the albums themselves are killer. However, each one fills up the disc with some demo stuff, including Doug, drummer George Raines and some anonymous bassist noodling around on some old country songs like "Miller's Cave" and "Never No More Blues". Now, I do love me some Doug, but I coulda done without that...especially since it's obvious whoever's playing bass doesn't know dick about country bass playing.

I'm an electric blues man. I do dig the old acoustic stuff - the Delta stuff more than the Piedmont stuff - but I get off seriously on that hard-rockin' South Side Chicago shit. I was watching a video last night of Muddy Waters doing "Got My Mojo Workin'" at the Newport Festival, and it is smokin'. Muddy was a seriously bad motherfucker.

GravatarGeeno : Point taken . I'll get my shorts on and stop thinking about the end of the world , go get a nice Ale and watch something old and dear from the vast VHS library. But it was an awesome show, and tonight promises to be even better. One of my all-time favorite Atlanta bands, the mighty, mighty Truckadelic, is doing a reunion show opening the gig. And the new Truckers album kicks all kinds of ass.

GravatarPhilalethes : HP & Keele ? Hey everyone , Philalethes is Stinking Rich !!!

If only! I was in the BASEMENT of one of those mansions, with my galfriend at the time. And it wasn't as expensive back then, either.

You'd think I was rich if you saw my neighborhood now, too...but you'd be disappointed if you stole my bank card and tried to withdraw any money. I got a bit above the poverty line briefly in the nineties, and have been hovering in the vicinity ever since...you can blame most of it on bad lifestyle choices and a lust for books and music (and laziness, honed to a remarkable degree of expertise). Though I do hold Bush personally responsible for the loss of a really lucrative job where I was lolling around on retainer at a couple grand a month. Takes twice as much time to earn that now, thanks to him...but such is life.

Haven't been back to Toronto for a while. Last time, it had changed, and not for the better. Still my fave North American city, though.

They should've known he'd run us into the ground.

Wind shift in Ohio, wind shift in Ohio, wind shift in Ohio, hope it's not too late.
Wind shift in Ohio, wind shift in Ohio, wind shift in Ohio, hope it's not too late.

GravatarJeffraham - I was just thinking of that XTC album today. That one's got a song called 'This World Over' on it, which got stuck in my head this morning.

Oh, and 'Shake You Donkey Up' rocks, too.

Gravatari found the trolls
they're spewing little green shit balls all over pandagon.
Trust me, we're not missing much:
"blah blah kerry lied blah blah self-inflicted blah blah release his records blah blah spew spew spew"

GravatarFunniest transformation : Annette and Keel is now Desireable ...renovated all the storefronts , swept out the jabbering drunks and just started opening coffee shops and wellness stores. Used Books, Funky clothing , nice loft apartments.

Yeah, I saw some of that. Some kind of fancy bakery there, too. What really surprised me was Queen east of Yonge, which used to be pretty seedy in the early eighties--if not downright dangerous--and has now been cleaned up quite a bit. What really breaks my heart is the old rep houses being torn down or turned into "Pages." I remember when a dollar would get you into a double-bill at any of seven theatres...seemed like only the Roncesvalles was left...and maybe the Beaches...but with crappy programs.

Gravatar"blah blah kerry lied blah blah self-inflicted blah blah release his records blah blah spew spew spew"

In that case, here's a quote from Bob Dole for you. Use it wisely, for it has great powers!

"As we approached the enemy, there was a brief exchange of gunfire. I took a grenade in hand, pulled the pin, and tossed it in the direction of the farmhouse. It wasn't a very good pitch—-remember, I was used to catching passes, not throwing them. In the darkness, the grenade must have struck a tree and bounced off. It exploded nearby, sending a sliver of metal into my leg—-the sort of injury the Army patched up with mercurochrome and a Purple Heart."

GravatarOkay, I confess -- I actually like "Thick as a Brick."

* hangs head in shame -- but then lifts chin defiance

Forget that shit. If you like it, you like it. I was a musical snob in my teens and early 20's and then realized that there's too much damn good music out there to limit myself.

Stevie Marriot, Joe Walsh, Jeff Beck, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, McLaughlin, Miles, COltrane, Steve Howe, Keef, Ronny, Jimmy Page, Jimi, Eric, Frampton, Clem Clempson, Leslie West, Perry and Whitford, Micky Taylor, Duane, Wes, Wolf, Buddy Guy, the Hook, Townsend, Strummer & Jones, Elvis C. and on and on and on. The idea is to keep rockin'

And fuck that "classic rock" label. It's rock and roll.

And the Bush Boy said he stopped liking the Beatles when they grew mustaches. What a dildo.

Hey Stranger - Everything Diamond Dave did he ripped off from Mangrum. Vocal style, looks, stage moves, all of it.

GravatarPhilalethes : It is changing back for the better . Fantastic leftist fury in the city council now , making real progress. Using ultra cold deep lake water to cool office towers that has been so successful they will remove the electric -freon systems, stopped the building of a fixed bridge to the paradise of toronto Islands and stopped the greedheads even in the face of monsterous lawsuits. One sweet addition , the enormous windmill on the lakeshore that generates electric for 800 homes, and to which the entire waterfront security system powers from , all cars , AC, everything run off wind. Talk of a Windfarm along the lake , powering all the office complexes all the way to Bloor fossil fuel free. With the new city Government so good , it is an exciting time to be involved in this modern experiment. And a real world examplar to embarrass the shit out of the Chenyites still married to oil
Click homepage to see the lovely windmill . We are all very proud...

GravatarMore about that BOC/Foghat show:

It was at Kingston Fairgrounds,NH but a respectable 10,000 or so people were there and the other 2 bands were Black Oak Arkansas + Badfinger. I have to say, that was probably the worst concert I was ever at. I was really only there for BOC and they bored me to tears.

You want an unapologetic pro-rocker, here I am. Not only do I proudly own the vinyl of Thick As A Brick, I have the full-length live version as well!

Not to mention my stacks of Yes bootlegs, including a Topographic Oceans show. If there's a song out there too long for me, I ain't heard it yet.

Except for The Ramones, The Clash, and The Dead Kennedys, I don't have much to do with punk. Although, I did get kicked in the teeth at a Gang Green show once, too close to the front of the stage and caught the side of a stagediving boot, completely unintentional.

GravatarAsH,

Wonderful to hear it! Does my heart good. Especially since I may end up fleeing there one of these days...

GravatarThat should say, of course, unapologetic prog rocker.

GravatarI was really only there for BOC and they bored me to tears.

I saw 'em at a county fair about ten years back...they were ghastly! Only two original members and session hacks padding out the line-up. To his credit, Buck Dharma seemed deeply embarassed. Bllom thought he could carry the day with macho bluster...not too impressive from a squeaky little guy who's shorter than my wife!

I still like their first couple albums, though. The first one, especially...great sound, like it was recording inside a shoebox.

GravatarBless you, Foghat. I hope someone takes them up on their offer to play for the troops. A lot of those reserves folks would love a 70's nostalgia concert.

GravatarOK, I gotta get out and about. Nice chatting with y'all. Sorry to leave before the conversation turns to Bloodrock, Rare Earth, Marillion, the Alan Parsons Project, or (dare I say it?) Magma!

GravatarObble-o/arrow/anyone

GravatarI like BOC up to about AGENTS OF FORTUNE, although FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN is worthwhile as well.

They just seemed, when I saw them, like they wanted to be anywhere besides where they were at that moment.

The first couple albums are still great listening on a hot summer night.

Gravatar*waves a sign in support of disco and 80's new wave*

GravatarWhen you read crap from Coulter or Novak, no matter how crazy their ramblings, at least you know where they are coming from. You are well aware that they are right-wing wackos doing their propaganda work. No surprises there.

What drives me bonkers (and most of us who have been monitoring media atrocities for years) are people like Jacob Weisberg and the fake lefties at Slate.com. I mean, is that magazine entirely devoted to trash Democrats and point the finger at people on the left? Seems that way. Who needs Fox News when we have Jacob Weisberg and the fine pro-Lieberman DINOs at Slate?

I just got home and saw Atrios' posts about this nasty, ugly, disturbing tirade by "Slate liberal" Jacob Weisberg against the left, against lefty writers, and anyone who criticizes Bush. Seriously. Here's the atrocity:

>All the President's Critics

Weisberg peppers all his comments with false analogies, long debunked right-wing lies, and even flat out distortions. The premise of the article is that anti-Bush critics are worse, much worse than anti-Clinton critics were all through the 90s.

The whole article is a slap to anyone that had to endure the Clinton persecution of the 90s, and had to suffer criticism, insults, censorship and threats for daring to criticism the Boy King since t he theft of the 2000 election.

I strongly suggest you write the editors about this atrocity. This can't stand:

> NY Times, Letters to the editor: letters@nytimes.com

> NY Times ombudsman: public@nytimes.com

Let them know!

GravatarAnd yeah , you can't get good and stabbed on Queen west till Dufferin , and even there you have to look for trouble . Q east is still a dangerous dump , but now Everything is renovated into lofts, all the old Battery Factories, ink factories, PCB Dumps and transformer buildings. Happily , some have also been rolled over to Art collectives and such . One brilliant move was agreeing to let some technology developer to build a research office on some prime real estate if they donated 3 floors to the Child Protection Service for admin and placement of women and kids in crisis , they got 1.5 million in floor space they could never have hoped for, all due to the clever dealings of some great market-socialist brains on council, and kids got some real help , And the right wing dorks that tried in vain to argue the value of the deal were viewed as off the rails and out of tune, and booed by bankers reps. That was just weeird to watch , but it happened . Town council on cable access channel is actually worth watching these days .The debate here is how best to apply our agreed portion to the advancement and profit of all without standing on the spines of those already hurting ,as a matter of course , and the religious right loose points in polls weekly, as people are simply too energised and active to bother with the narrow agenda ...not bad all considered...

GravatarBilly B

Well said. A person's taste should widen and diversify. I know soo many who listen to 'classic rock' exclusively..for decades! I liked Billy Joel's the stranger but radio plyd it to death .. i didnt listen to it for about 10 years in order to regain freshness. Commercial radio is anathema to me.

Ever listen to World Cafe out of U of Penn( on public radio here)? Great source for new music, interviews.

Gravatar*waves a sign in support of disco and 80's new wave*

Hmm, now where did I put that box of rotten tomatoes...?

I will say though, as much of a prog-rock fan that I am, Emerson Lake + Palmer are a band that bore me to near death. They could do a 2-minute song and it would be too much for me.

GravatarSorry to leave before the conversation turns to Bloodrock, Rare Earth, Marillion, the Alan Parsons Project, or (dare I say it?) Magma!

(Kicking prog can farther down the block...)

Or Steve Hillage.

(/Kicking prog can...)

GravatarListening to only one type of music is boring + a sure sign of mental laziness.

GravatarBloodrock? Haven't heard DOA in years...

GravatarOkay, enough of Foghat. this is enough to make my fucking blood boil!!! Talk about desecration of an American institution. GRRRRR!!!

GravatarYa can take mah disco and new wave, but ya can never take, mah FREEDOM TO BOOGIE!

/21-year old who thinks the best music of all time came out of the 80's and the disco side of the 70's

Gravatarok, enough about Foghat. Where does Molly Hatchet stand in this matter?

GravatarSo mad I didn't close the tag properly...

Gravatarused to be in radio...the kind they called freeform...progressive...whatever billboard and record companies were pushing...but one thing you had to be alert for as a p.d. or m.d. was some lowlif scum from a record company...let s say republican records for the hell of it...this low life scum with an e that i forgot would sometimes call the national office and claim a radio station had added...oh lets say foghat...couple days later the truth came out...no add...no airplay...someone was lying...hmmm... swift boat etc...bob dole...etc and etc...i wonder if the republican party could be...god forbid...lying about something...your call.

Gravatarstranger: Jeffraham - I was just thinking of that XTC album today. That one's got a song called 'This World Over' on it, which got stuck in my head this morning.

Oh, and 'Shake You Donkey Up' rocks, too.

Yeah -- The Big Express. I vacillate between that and English Settlement as being my favorite XTC. But I will now put on Wasp Star for kicks.
.

GravatarThis, that is.

GravatarIs there NOTHING that the GOP won't try to glom onto in their desperation? Fuckers.

I think solar panels are the way to go, primarily. Windmills break down too much with all those moving parts.

GravatarThis, that is.

abc may wonder about Johnny, but he was a fuckin Highwayman therfore not a republican.

these people have mastered the art of affending the sshit out of me... argh

GravatarWe recall when Black died, Democracy Now played a song of his explaining that he wore black as a madly populist gesture, perpetually reminding people of the less fortunate, the wrongly convicted and so on: at the same time right-wing outlets (the major media) had segments playing a throwaway saddle opera ballad (as a "bad guy").

GravatarI made the mistake of asking about Foghat and my email is now a greatest hits repository. Fortunately, that's not much. (I recognize the songs; never knew the band as they didn't have an umlaut in the name or safety pins in their cheeks.)

It's too bad they're not doing GooperCon '04 -- it would have been a surefire way to rally the ABB Dino-Punk Vote, the Funk Vote, the Glam Vote (and so many other members of the fine family of 70ies musical votes.)

Gravatarhttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5781.../site/newsweek/

Dear Andrew Spano,
With reference to the above article, I must commend you on your vigilance with airport terrorism issues at Westchester County Airport. Obviously, this elderly man showed himself to be a threat; that plastic oxygen pipe could have been used to choke or strangle someone in an attempt to bring down the plane. The article also states that security has also targeted the elderly in various other states; excellent! A wheelchair could be used to ram the cockpit door, a hearing aid might be a microphone to terrorists on the ground; who knows what damage an aluminum walker could do to our country's security? Pacemakers are well known for having the capability of disabling an electrical system. Poof! Out of the sky!
Thank you for being alert, and on the job.

GravatarHay-zooz Kreesto, BlakNo1 - Cash ain't even cold in his grave and the repukes
are ripping the man off. Sad.

Johnny's whole life had nothing to do with the rich BS bigotry of the repukes.
I love these hypocrites - Cash fought addictions all his life. Funny that, if he were a rock and roller (which he was for much of his early career and later on, also) the jerks would be cranking on the boy for his lack of character because he did illicit drugs. The whole thing is absurd.

Back to BOC - Cities on Flame is one of the best tunes of all. The opening riff still makes the hair stand up on my neck.

GravatarDoes this duet with Joe Strummer sound like a plank from the Republican platform?

GravatarSomehow I doubt the singer of

"And I wear it for the thousands who have died
Believing that the Lord was on their side"

would have liked to be portrayed as a Republican.
...
"Because you're mine,
I walk the line."

Lord, what a deep voice that man had.

GravatarListen to Eater, great classic English punk band, I think they were all around 15 years old at the time (like X-Ray Spex).
Awesome bass lines that drive the whole song.
Barry Freed | Email | Homepage | 08.28.04 - 3:37 pm | #

Wow -- I haven't thought of that one in....uh, years.

Sorry to come so late to the party.

GravatarHere's how Johnny would have reacted.

Gravatarrepub's claiming Cash as thier own- it is so fucking on...

GravatarI hope you are all prepared. George Bush will make a speech that is perceived as being very good to great next Thursday. It's time for everyone to wake up. No more distractions from the swifties or new york protesters or a cop in florida that said he would kill the President. It's time to think hard about ideas again. The Kerry campaign needs our Karma.

GravatarGeorge Bush in Ohio today...'We've registered 10 million people to vote in Afghanistan'

Bush doesn't give a ratfuck: the big problem is that estimates for eligible voters in Afghanistan top out at about 8 million. Where'd the other 2 million come from? Multiple registrations. Hell, there might be 4 million fictional Afghan voters in that total. Why register twice or three times? Because your local warlord needs your vote, and will pay you for it. Some wealthier types were paying what amounts to the average Afghan annual salary for a voter registration card, which they'll use for their partisans on election day.

Katherine Harris, eat your heart out.

GravatarSo the Sun-Times quotes some "military expert" on this latest medals flap. But when you go to his site, milinet, it turns out to be like freeperville. WTF?

GravatarI hope you are all prepared. George Bush will make a speech that is perceived as being very good to great next Thursday

The GOP has the media in their pocket. Their convention is going to get a lot of positive play. We'll need to work very hard this week.

GravatarMAN IN BLACK
(Johnny Cash)

« © '71 House Of Cash »

Well you wonder why I always dress in black

Why you never see bright colors on my back

And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone

Well there's a reason for the things that I have on

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down

Livin' in the hopeless hungry side of town

I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime

But is there because he's a victim of the times

I wear the black for those who've never read

Or listened to the words that Jesus said

About the road to happiness through love and charity

Why you'd think he's talking straight to you and me

Well we're doin' mighty fine I do suppose

In our streak of lightning cars and fancy clothes

But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back

Up front there oughta be a man in black

I wear it for the sick and lonely old

For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold

I wear the black in morning for the lives that could have been

Each week we lose a hundred fine young men

And I wear it for the thousands who have died

Believin' that the Lord was on their side

I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died

Believin' that we all were on their side

Well there's things that never will be right I know

And things need changin' everywhere you go

But till we start to make a move to make a few things right

You'll never see me wear a suit of white

Oh I'd love to wear a rainbow every day and tell the world that everything's okay

But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back

Till things're brighter I'm the man in black

GravatarGeneral, Sir -

You are so absolutely correct.

GravatarShut It Down: NYC General Strike, September 1st, 2004.

Gravatarthanks Bill Brock - man i miss em both-
anyway its official I told my mother of the Cash event and she simply said "bastards" in that only a mom can say it way... indeed

Gravatar"Shut It Down – New York City

1 September 2004

The nation and entire world will be watching NYC during the Republican National Convention. With that many eyes on us it is imperative New Yorkers send a loud message-- one that strongly challenges the current Administration’s policies and shows the Republican Party that we have had enough. Enough intolerance. Enough failed leadership. Enough false promises. And enough exploitation of our city for political gain.

The most significant impact we can have as New Yorkers during the convention is simply not showing up. September 1st is the perfect opportunity for New Yorkers who work in the city's service industries to call in sick. Actors, musicians, waiters and waitresses, retail salespeople, hotel staff --- we know who keeps this city running, at least as far as the visitors are concerned.

We have the power to SHUT IT DOWN. But the sacrifice should be shared and we are challenging all New Yorkers who want to send the Republicans a strong message, to SHUT IT DOWN and call in sick to work on September 1st – the day before Bush’s acceptance speech. There should be the maximum number of conventioneers in town, looking to see a show, go to dinner or shop that day. We can make it difficult if we SHUT IT DOWN."

GravatarJim, how do you think the rest of the country will view a general strike in NYC? Do you think it helps or hurts Bush?

I like to go to protests, but I believe they should be held to advance a cause. Any Dem who participates in anything ither than a Billionaires for Bush event is helpin Bush.

GravatarI would say that the RNC calls for a one-off reformation of The Sex Pistols. Lydon would start his shit, the place would go critical mass and that would, as they say, be that. Problem solved.

GravatarI hope the ghost of my grandmother will haunt these fuckers in protest. I still have all the Cash vinyl she gave me as a child.

That picture rules, true anger personified.

GravatarThe General is here!! I mentioned your letter about Louisiana Baby Food - you are before your time (i.e. you note the really good stuff, general).
P.S. I am a celebrity groupie - acknowledged - what can I say?

GravatarEr, General, did you see my above letter to Andrew Spano? (actually sent). Everything I learned I learned from you (except that Masters degree - it keeps me employed).
Sue

GravatarA general strike would be more beneficial to Democrats than a rally, protest, march, etc. because it indicates the widespread sentiment of native New Yorkers not appreciating what Bush's policies and posturings have been toward the city since 9/11. That the populace of NYC is taking part in shutting down NYC, and not some imported bandana-wrapped hippie out-of-towner, would help disuade the media from portraying it as an act that inconveniences New Yorkers, since they themselves would have made the decision to inconvenience themselves.

The general strike idea works where it is tried, Americans just don't try it that often, which is too bad because it is far more promising and less potentially disastrous than a rally where one or two unhinged speakers or attendants could do something rash or premeditatively idiotic and in turn get THOSE actions shown on the 5pm news instead of the 99% positive/peaceful demonstration. What can people do that would be despicable (to the media) if they're skipping a day of work at home out of range of a camera crew???

GravatarThanks Sue, but we have to give credit where credit is due. Maddi, who contributes to Jesus' General, wrote the hot sauce post.

GravatarActually, I was thinking of a mass walk-out after the election (should things go barely one-sided). All the unions (I have an IBEW Kerry bumper sticker on the car) are behind Kerry. What's to protest now? Let's talk Diebolt, let's talk another Supreme Court intervention. Let's save power for the time it has to be used (let's talk about the FBI showing up at Sue's door).

GravatarI like the idea of a generak strike. I think we should do more of them. But, I don't think it will help Kerry to do one during the convention.

GravatarLet ma put my 2 cents in here.

I would like to give all New Yorkers my heart felt apologies to them for the tradgeys caused by the Bush (mis)administration. You deserve better.

Second I wish you well in your quest to survive the elephant invasion and I support you in all your travials to try and thwart that invasion.

Good luck in whatever you do,and what ever you can achieve.

GravatarActually, I was thinking of a mass walk-out after the election (should things go barely one-sided). All the unions (I have an IBEW Kerry bumper sticker on the car) are behind Kerry

As an AFSCME member, I agree. If we lose and it looks like we were screwed. We should shut the country down.

GravatarI pay $700 a year to the NEA - we haven't had a strike in years... maybe it's time - although our schools are closing or being reconstituted big time (and I sent a link to what's his face Instpundant from my hometown newspaper) to try to get him to refocus. There are alot of angry, organized people.

GravatarMouth off? 5 years:
Fla. Officer Indicted for Bush Threat

He should of just said he was sorry that the pretzel didn't finish the job.

Gravatari like the strike idea. i'm afraid this country is headed for some bad times. make that, it's gonna get worse,...

GravatarPhilalethes - Thanks for the tip on the bastards at Borders and Barnes & Noble. Here's the letter I sent:

"Now that you have provided a platform for the thoroughly discredited authors of "Unfit for Duty," it is MY DUTY as a thoughtful citizen who cares about democracy to say your company is UNFIT for my continued patronage. How dare you! What's next? Lectures from the Holocaust Deniers' Speakers Bureau?

Sincerely,

GravatarHey, steve simels

Are you same steve simels that was an impeccable rock critic for Stereo Review back in the day?

Or are you paying tribute to the guy the way I do in my Yahoo email sobriquet (keefr56) or is it all just a weird co-inky-dink?

GravatarFla. Officer Indicted for Bush Threat

No one should threaten the Reichsfurer.I mean after all freedom of speech ends where your lips meet the air, right?

Gravatarfreedom of speech ends where your lips meet the air

Where your fingers meet the keyboard as well...

GravatarI really have to figure out a way to get a Juno account - everything I write leads back to me. This is really scary. Remember the post about a poet who posted a "Dump Bush" bumper sticker on her third floor window, and was visited by the FBI? They threatened her with a traffic violation.

GravatarOne of my all-time favorite Atlanta bands, the mighty, mighty Truckadelic, is doing a reunion show opening the gig. And the new Truckers album kicks all kinds of ass.
Backslider

What? Did Ted get bored or something? That's great news.

(You know you're getting old when your connection to a band is through their parents - Ted's dad and my wife were business acquaintances before he retired.)

Gravatarjobojojo, thanx for that i heard a snippit earlier and have been wondering all day. it's wrong what's happening in this country.

having said that, i would not want that man on the security detail. fuck bush!

GravatarSue, I have a couple of free softhome.net pop accounts that I use to use for The General. They were great. You can access them with your outlook mail client. The General has been signed up for so many newsletters and porn sites by freepers that I had to dump them. I was always reaching my limit of incoming email.

GravatarGeneral, do you think a general strike is do-able? We could be in dream-land. I am one generation away from having my grandparents playing bridge with the Renquists.

GravatarA general strike would be preferable if Bush was to steal another, but it should and would need to be more than one day.It IMO would need to be at least a week for it to be effective.Ther Repukes would just laugh off a one day strike.

GravatarBloodrock? Haven't heard DOA in years...
BlakNo1

Sounds like you're livin' right!

Just jumping back in for a moment here. I never got the prog thing at all. Bands like Gentle Giant and Yes were kind of funny, but I'd rather eat thumbtacks than listen to 'em. That stuff is completely over my head. Especially those nightmarish second-string acts like Focus...Magma...Eloy...only remotely prog stuff I could stomach was the German bands like Neu! and Can and maybe Amon Duul.

As for the GOP trying to co-opt Johnny Cash...what a bunch of fucking jackals! There's a guy that would've had Dubya's number in seconds flat. I hope to God some family member slaps them down. The only man who truly represents the GOP culturally is Pat Boone, as far as I'm concerned.

GravatarRepublicans like Johnny Cash because they think he's one of them...

...a dead christian.

They're wrong on both counts.

GravatarThanks, General.
At first my heart was pounding that you were making a play, but then I realized it was a technical answer.

GravatarWell the officer had 3 things going against him:
1. He was a Nigerian native with one of them funny soundin' last names.
2. He was an 11 year Army vetran who has criticized the Iraqi war and US policy in Africa.
3. He lives in Florida.

Of course if it had been 1998 and he mouthed off against Clinton, well, you can imagine the outcome would have been a little different.

GravatarWasn't Magma the band that invented its own language? Jeez....

GravatarAugust 22, 2004

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A man who heckled President Bush at a political rally was fired from his job at an advertising and design company for offending a client who provided tickets to the event.

The fired graphic designer said Saturday he won´t try to get his job back.

"I´m mad less about losing the job — I´m more mad about the reasons," said Glen Hiller, 35, of Berkeley Springs. "All I did was show up and voice my opinion."

GravatarI Love Bush, I love Bus,i love bash, blog gloosh....

Gravatarsmalfish .. true, a one day strike is laughable to a rich Rethug. but the media would gobble it up because it goes against the grain of the "arranged convention" in every way, shape and form.

it would also be an embarrassment to rudi and petaki, and the dems could hit them with the "overtime" thing over and over again.

we aren't so much worried about the rich rethugs; we are trying to convince middle america that we are on the wrong course, not scare this heck out of them. take a page out of tricky dick's 1968 playbook; the dems are the party in the middle and the rethugs are out of touch

Gravatarany one see the seattle post endorsement today? we just need a couple more of those from ohio, missouri (not mizzurah, where the rednecks live), florida and nevada

although the class warfare comment is disturbing in the endorsement

Gravatarhttp://www.defendjohnnycash.org/

Show up and sing out.

Gravataralthough the class warfare comment is disturbing in the endorsement
syntallic

Everything's disturbing about it. They're basically saying, "We've always disagreed with everything Bush stood for...but we wanted a nice big tax cut, so we endorsed him! Now, we've decided it wasn't worth it."

It's hateful ethically, but it's probably a convincing argument to people who share their priorities....

GravatarWasn't Magma the band that invented its own language? Jeez....
steve simels

Yup. Good for comic relief in small doses, but a soul-annihilating nightmare when you actually have to listen to a whole side of it. "A" for effort, though, I guess!

GravatarPhilalethes,

It seems we have similar tastes in music. Among other things.

Don't tell me you've been fucking my wife too?!

I've gotta stop letting her go online...

GravatarActually, the members of Foghat did their best work before they were Foghat. Check out any late '60s Savoy Brown LP (Raw Sienna, Blue Matter, A Step Further). Roger Earl, Tone Stevens and Lonesome Dave left Savoy Brown in '70 to form Foghat.

Gravatarblimp, Frank,

Too bad they couldn't have gotten Kim Simmonds to come with them. then Foghat woulda been something - namely, they woulda been Savoy Brown.

'Burnt Sienna' is still one of the albums I credit with leading me down the right path, guitar-playing wise...

GravatarEr, 'Raw Sienna.' Had a paint color jump into my head when I typed that.

GravatarDon't tell me you've been fucking my wife too?!

I got some photo's...

GravatarJesus. Thank God. I thought I was going to have to vote for Bush, but now that Foghat aren't endorsing him, I won't have to. Talk about dodging a bullet.

GravatarStranger & It's the blimp, Frank...

Yep. Simmonds was great, as was Savoy Brown. Never a critic favorite, but always entertaining, just the same.

As a matter of fact, fuck the critics.
Tell Mama was an ass-kicker, as was their version of Wang Dang Doodle

Around '73 or '74, Savoy put out an album called Boogie Brothers
with Simmonds, Stan Webb(of Chicken Shack), and Miller Hawkins on guitars.
One of my favorites.

GravatarWow, I hate arriving late to these threads! Go Foghat! In unrelated news, hubby & I just finished moving out of our ol' grimy 1 bedroom just off Keele near Wilson. Back in Peterborough (about 1 1/2 hrs. away). April Wine plays here occasionally. Maybe Foghat too, someday...

Spent 5 years in T.O., will miss it... thanks for your memories, AsH and Philalethes!

GravatarBut Foghorn Leghorn will be doing a tour in support of the Bush/Cheney ticket in order to support his buddies: the chickenhawks.
Why Are We Back In Iraq?

GravatarHey, steve simels

Are you same steve simels that was an impeccable rock critic for Stereo Review back in the day?

Or are you paying tribute to the guy the way I do in my Yahoo email sobriquet (keefr56) or is it all just a weird
co-inky-dink?

Yeah, I'm him. Or is it I'm me? In any case, yes I'm the (you should pardon the expression) rock critic.

BTW, I still write for Stereo Review, except now its called Sound and Vision. I'm not dead yet.

GravatarIt's not the protestors who will do anything stupid. It is the RNC agent provocateurs who will do something stupid or violent while wearing a Greenpeace shirt.

Okay....so fight fire with fire.

Who's up for dressing in a cheap blue suit, wearing a power tie, a straw boater, several RNC, BC '04 buttons and doing some videos of vicious pig-fucking?

Better yet...donkey-rape!

Or with the same GOP costume, standing in the middle of hippie-protesters trying to pretend to be one of them, throwing rocks at Starbucks windows?

GravatarZZ Top & Kid Rock are on the bill tonight.
