I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

But if you can't afford to give money, give some time. Call your local Democratic Party office and ask what you can do to help out.

Better yet:

Call the Republicans. Volunteer to put up signs, pass out literature, etc. Then take all the stuff and throw it away or, preferably, recycle it.

Volunteer to make phone calls, then don't make them.

Covert ops for the little guy.

I can't afford to give money, but I've managed to get 60 some young people registered to vote, and have encouraged them to do the same.
The draft issue is a good selling point.

i would give, a lot, but I can't because you have to be a US citizen. Working visa holder is not sufficient, despite paying taxes. It really irks me that taxes go to support the war effort, bush has undeniably strong influence over the entire world, but I am not allowed to give 20 bucks, or 20 thousand, to moveon.

Justin,

Just give the money to someone you trust and have THEM give an equivalent amount to whomever ...

GravatarGive to the Dems; make this man even more angry than he already is...but mind your hair.

GravatarI'm giving time.

OT--has anyone experienced their vote never going thru in the on-line polls at CNN or MSNBC in the past year?

I only sporadically vote in them as I think they are ridiculous, as they ask questions people are rarely competent to answer, but from time to time, I just blow and put my 2 cents in. But my vote never registers--my evidence for this is there is sometimes a promise to see the results of te poll if you vote, but it doesn't happen when I do.

GravatarMy fervent hope is that young people like Dharma and friends and minority people are being seriously underpolled.
My husband gets paid on the fifteenth; I will contribute to the DSCC or the DNC on that day. I have to say when I see Bush in West Virginia surrounded by adoring crowds, it blows my mind. Have they been unconcious for the last three and a half years? Do they really want more of the same?

GravatarAfter watching NOW, I am reminded that best reason to give is to send Condi Rice to the American Enterprise Institute for good.

BushCo= 4 years of Cowardly Incompetence!

(And thanks for the quick troll action earlier!)

GravatarI've donated about 250 so far. I'm not upset about it but I'm really not happy about how my $$$ has been spent.

I want to see georgie crying on national television. I want to see karl rove on Katie Couric defending the chimp. I want to see Ed Gillespie die from a brain hemmorage right there on Meet the Press due to the stress he's under. I want to see DICK taken to Walter Reed on a weekly basis for shock therapy.

Sadly, I have not seen ANY OF this. My money has not been well spent and I for one and kinda pissed. This is our only shot. If they steal it this time, there WILL NOT be a next time.

Bad advice. It is illegal to make straw donations. Don't put yourself, your friend or your cause at risk.

GravatarGod, I would love to give, but I just can not afford it. Lordy Lordy

Gravatargive money to moveon if you aint eligible.

GravatarAs far as I know, foreign nationals can donate to non-profits, just not to the PACs.

MoveOn will likely accept your legal donation if you make sure that it goes to the entity and not their PAC, which gets involved in races and lobbying.

Any campaign experts out there know the fine points?

GravatarSweet Sue - I think there are a lot of groups who aren't getting polled. I was saying this last night - I've read that mosques have been holding voter registration drives because the majority of American Muslims feel completely betrayed. They voted for him last time.

Wish I knew why they had.

GravatarTena, where are you from?

GravatarI am absolutely certain that someone on this thread has art work or equipment that they would be willing to sell.
While not inexpensive, I am absolutely certain that the seller would see to it that the proceeds of the sale went to a good cause or two or three.

Gravatarthats what I said def, just without all that fancy high falutin puncuation and kerning.

GravatarI just sent Daschle some turkee, although he dont deserve it. It was doctors orders. oh and ginny schrader got a little juice too. go ginny go.

ps. Atrios, Hoeffel needs to get moving yo..

GravatarEveryone,

I've already given pretty much what I can afford to give to the DCCC, Daschle, and Kerry. I want to give more money, but I've been so dispondent lately it's tough. What's worse, is around my office, where almost nobody likes Bush, a lot of people are feeling the same. Is giving worth it when it seems more and more that Kerry is faltering, weak, and uninspiring? I'm just afraid we're in for a loss.

Gravatarthe majority of American Muslims feel completely betrayed. They voted for him last time.

IIRC, Michigan's Arab community (largest in US) split in 2000. Last polling I saw (july?) had Kerry around 75%.

Unfortunately Cheney will cite this as proof that OBL wants Kerry to win.

GravatarSomewhat on the topic of getting these maniacs out of the White House:

A highly respected British journalist is saying that Powell described Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Wolfowitz "f***ing crazies."

Gravatar(Should be an "as" after Wolfowitz...

GravatarI am not a citizen of this country, still I donated money to moveon. I thought my country politics are dirty, oh boy, they sure can learn some lessons from Bush junta.

GravatarKC, you poor thing. With that attitude, it's no wonder you're a loser.

That Bush is a bastard, isn't he?

GravatarYou guys know I couldn't sit this one out... I'm sick of this wingnut bullshit about the so-called "forged documents."

So, I have created an animated graphic explaining the differences between the CBS Memo and the Times New Roman sample that the so called "experts" in the wingnut site used as "proof" of tampering.

The example they used just doesn't stand on its own. Close attention actually shows evidence the CBS documents seems to come from a typewriter, not from a modern word processor.

The whole animation lasts about 1 minute, then loops ad-infinitum.

See, we too can play this game.

GravatarThink of waking up Nov. 3rd to the hellish realization that 'it's only 4 years and 2 months till the end of bush's 2nd term'... Then think of waking up on Nov. 4th to the hellish realization that 'only 4 years and 2 months left...'

"Had we all given an extra $100, it might have made the difference, but now, we will never know. At the time, $100 seemed like a lot, but now, i'd gladly give $1000 not to have to live through another 4 years of g w bushco."

GravatarBe hopeful. I have three kids of voting age who have never voted before. They tell me that they fully plan to vote for Kerry this year, and that many of their friends are ready to do the same. Interestingly, Howard Stern bears some responsibility for this. There's a whole lot of people out there who aren't falling into any of the polls.

GravatarThey voted for him last time.

Wish I knew why they had.

I'll bet this has something to do with the Rethugs-are-good-for-business mythos and the American Dream and whatnot. We know it's bullshit, but that myth has legs.

GravatarIf this is such a dirty campaign,lilke so many have said.Why is this not being reported in any of the major media.I realise the coprorate ties and all,but that has'nt prevented some real journalism from being done.

I wish we could see this on a national scene because I believe that the uninformed public ought to be informed of how dishonorable the junior campaign has become and how much we are being decieved.

This really sucks.We cannot have any real debates,it's all about the smear.How pathetic.

I give credit to Kerry,tho for not wallowing in the mud,too bad its going to hurt him so badly.

GravatarI'd gladly GIVE $1000, that's not really my dilemma. If we all could guarantee that bush would lose in November and these sorry fucks would forever be remembered as the WORST fucking traitors this nation has ever seen I would give $10,000. Write a check right now.

We know that isn't happening. We know because our money is sadly not being spent well.

GravatarI'm just afraid we're in for a loss.

GravatarI think these allegations of pedophilia against Bush are pretty irresponsible, especially in light of the fact that only one of the transsexual hookers even looked younger than 16.

Remember, what happens in Boystown stays in Boystown.

GravatarDon't forget to email CBS News and Dan Rather, and tell them you loved seeing them actually do their job.
Then email their Advertisers, the sponsors for the Nightly News, and tell them you love it that they are helping to bring some real news to the American people.

if you want to see more stories like Rather's 60-minutesII piece, you have to let them know.

we all know the freepers will be Howling over this, and will start calling and emailing like crazy, so we have to show our support.

remember if you want "more like this please" you have to tell them so .

GravatarKC:

You are falling victim to the Democratic disease of loss of confidence. This never happens to Republicans, and is a large reason why they win. If Karl Rove read your comment, he'd squeal with piggy glee. Don't let them fuck with your mind like that. Buck up and get in the game.

Amen. Doing my best, giving bucks for the first time ever in my 50+ years of life. Can't believe I'm alone.

GravatarOK, oddball (and possibly silly, but WTF) idea: Do the Dems or any support group thereof accept donations of...stuff? Merchandise that can easily be converted to cash? I'd gladly haul an old Mac, or PC (or both) to such a place. Gotta be worth at least a few bucks, no?

Gravatarhey, accidentally posted this on an old comment thread with a bad link....

Here's a fun tidbit. I was curious that the only expert named in articles questioning the Killian memos was a document examiner named Sandra Ramsey Lines. This is the expert that announced within hours of the CBS report that she was "virtually certain" the documents were computer generated. She backed up this claim by turning to her computer and demonstrating her ability to recreate it (and thereby setting off the egregious logical fallacy that so many--including Josh Marshall--have fallen into).

Even this evening, AP's followup story includes Line's comments--and no others, after pointing out that CBS cited only one document expert (Marcel Matley)in their broadcast tonight.

So who is Lines? I did a little checking, and found through the Center for Public Integrity (follow the link and enter last name Lines) that she donated about $550 over the past year to The WISH List, a "fundraising organization for Republican women candidates".

Its not a lot, and her pattern of donations looks a bit like mine--$100 here and there. It merely identifies her sentiments.

I started to wonder about her when I read the Salon article about the Swiftees orchestrating pushback on this issue. Its a no brainer that they would have had at least one expert lined up and ready to go. (Note: the CPI does track Swiftee donations, and Lines isn't on their donor list.)

GravatarGGG,
ebay, ebay, ebay.....

GravatarI'll bet this has something to do with the Rethugs-are-good-for-business mythos and the American Dream and whatnot.

Bush promised the Arab community that he would stop racial profiling of them. No shit. He's on video in FL criticizing Clinton's Justice Dept and INS policies regarding this.

Of course, 9/11 changed his mind.

But the 100% of Arab Americans who did *NOT* participate in 9/11 have not forgotten.

thanks for the heads-up. I live in a heavily immigrant area, but not Arabic, mostly. My perception is that immigrant communities tend to be pretty overwhelmingly Republican, but your reasoning is more direct and sensible.

GravatarOT but amusing: Thersites is giddy as a schoolgirl over the Miami win.

GravatarYou are falling victim to the Democratic disease of loss of confidence. This never happens to Republicans,

No, they get their panties twisted, they just have better cheerleaders with 3 hours on the radio everyday and 4 hours on FOX.

And unfortunately they have a closeted gay man in Miami who gets millions of hits on his "cyber gossip" site to disseminate the daily talking points to the wingers at work.

GravatarI've been surprised talking to some friends of mine, who vote, but know very little about recent issues regarding Chimpy's National Guard paperwork. They are too busy with work and kids to even watch the news. Which leads me to think that this whole mess is not going to mean anything to most of the folks out there. Some of these same people are giving money, as I have been. I also register people to vote, even though I live in CA, which will not swing the balance ... I tell people I am trying to create a critical mass. So donate, register, and talk to people.

GravatarYa'll forget that junior was banging that aborted fetus he had done way back in the 70's

GravatarBush got 90% of 180,000 Arab voters in Florida 2000! I don't see them going that way this time.

GravatarI worked for the county Democratic committee at the county fair a few weeks ago. We had a group of teenagers approach the table, saying they'd like bumper stickers and other Kerry stuff to take home to their parents. Later, they came back again and asked for more. Someone noticed they were the same guys, got to checking around, and found that the Republican booth a few units down was paying these guys for every item they took from our table!

OT, but on that same day, I had an opportunity to check out the new electronic voting machines our county is phasing. I'm totally opposed to them. There is a paper trail, but it is only collected at the end of the day. In other words, there are no receipts for the voters, so you can't tell if your vote has truly registered. The representative from the election supervisor's office said that each precinct will have one or two of these machines in this fall's elections, and by the time of the primary elections in May (I live in Virginia, and our state elections are held in off-years), all voters in all precincts will vote on these.

I asked if, in the fall election, could a person have a choice as to the type of machine they wanted to vote on (Our other machines are the ones with the "switches" that you turn to enter your vote.). The representative said, "Not if we can help it."

Besides the fact that there's no receipt for voters, I believe that the machines will be very intimidating to folk who don't like to use computerized equipment. I'm thinking about many of the elderly here. The rep said they hadn't witnessed that kind of problem, but I just can't believe it won't be an issue. Also, I found the whole voting routine a bit confusing.

GravatarWahooooo!!!!

FRANK GORE!!!!! FRANK FUCKING GORE!!!!

'CANES! 'CANES!

(sorry...)

Gravatar Powell described Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Wolfowitz "f***ing crazies."
rorschach

Isn't "the crazies" their old nickname from the days of Poppy Bush? It makes sense Powell would use the same (albeit strengthened) term. What the fuck is he doing in this administration anyway? Did he not see? It's ridiculous to imagine that he had no idea at all just how nutso these freaks are. Powell's supposedly an intelligent man.

On another note, this forgery nonsense is total bullshit. I remember the ancient IBM Selectrics in my mom's old office. They had dozens of font balls, and superscript keys right on the keyboards (and if not on the keyboard, the font balls came with an opaque film keboard overlay specifying where the superscript keys were). It's a cockeyed lie originating from someone either too young or too old, rich, and most likely white and male to have ever used an old typewriter.

It reminds me of Senior and the grocery store scanner. People so removed from the lives of ordinary people that even the most basic and outmoded workaday technologies fascinate them...

GravatarI'll send some money to the DNC now. Apologies for the college football excitement....

GravatarBush got 1,000,000+ Gay votes in 2000! I don't think that's going to happen either!

I suspect the "bounty" thing is behind our incredible disappearing yard signs, too. It doesn't surprise me at all.

GravatarKitty Kelley book now #2 Bestseller at Amazon.com

GravatarBush's views on Arab American Profiling in 2000:

The fact that Bush himself brought up both issues during his first televised debate with Gore made a major difference to Arab- American voters in particular. They have borne the brunt of both airport-security profiling practices and "secret evidence" cases where the government has tried to deport suspected terrorists without affording them the right to see the evidence against them or cross-examine witnesses.

"Arab-Americans were jumping for joy" when Bush objected to these practices during the first debate," according to James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute (AAI), which has not endorsed either candidate. Bush also has addressed the same issues in a special video-tape prepared for Arab-American audiences.

But the biggest factor bringing Arab-American and South Asian-American Muslim votes to Bush, according to activists here, is the fact that Bush has been willing to meet and listen to these groups.

GravatarI just received an email response from one of the quoted media experts, Sandra Ramsey Lines.

She's the person that other folks here reported is a regular republican donor.

Here was my email to her:

To:
Sent: Friday, September 10, 2004 9:46 AM
Subject: Document forgeries?

Dear Ms. Lines,

When you recently told the media that you were "virtually
certain" the Bush memos were computer generated, did you
take into account the facts that:

-- the letters in the documents are not aligned
horizontally in many places, rather they are irregularly
placed as they would often be if typed?
-- the IBM Composer, built in the 1960s, had the font
used in the memos and could center and typeset
proportional font?
-- the Composer and many IBM Selectric machines of that
era and earlier could easily type superscripts of smaller
font?
-- the Composer and many IBM Selectric machines of that
era used proportional fonts?

Sincerely,
stoo

And here is her response:

Dear stoo:

My examination was based on a number of factors. Perhaps the most important
thing ... I could find no typewriter font (including the IBM Executive) that
matched exactly the Times font letter for letter in the questioned documents
(there was always some difference/variation) in the questioned letters when
compared with the database Times fonts for that time period. The "th"
superscript could have existed on some IBM Selectrics, proportional spacing
also existed, and Times fonts have been around a long time. However, I was
able to produce in Microsoft Word a document that when compared with the
questioned memos showed no significant differences in the letter forms,
spacing, indentations, etc.

My findings were that the questioned letters/memos "very probably" were
computer-generated using Word or WordPerfect. Without examining the
original documents, I cannot be positive. Since then, more information has
come to light that confirms my findings.

Thank you for your comments. They are appreciated.

Sandra Ramsey Lines
Forensic Document Examiner

Gravatarwait, her name is Sandra Lies or Lines?

GravatarI wish I could find a bumper sticker that says "W is Wrong" and another that says "F stands for Freedom."

GravatarLooks like the DoD is not Happy with Seymour Hersh
Department of Defense Statement on Seymour Hersh Book
Based on media inquiries, it appears that Mr. Seymor Hersh’s upcoming book apparently contains many of the numerous unsubstantiated allegations and inaccuracies which he has made in the past based upon unnamed sources.

But this is the best part:

If any of Mr. Hersh’s anonymous sources wish to come forward and offer evidence to the contrary, the department welcomes them to do so.

Gravatartangerine--

More than anything else I see this as neutralizing the swiftee crap. It wasn't enough to debunk the lies because there are still plenty of people out there saying smoke means fire. By pushing out the Bush Guard stuff--which has the advantage of more truth than anything dumped on Kerry (yes really truly)--people will be less likely to say "Bush, well... But Kerry--all that swift boat stuff..." Its more likely they'll discount both (unfortunately) and vote on something more substantive.

I saw Aaron Brown last night, with a report from a small Pennsylvania town, and I thank god I'm not laid off and living in a dying town with no prospects. I know we need to talk about real issues, because a lot of people out there are living on the edge of desperation. But there are hard political realities we can't ignore either, and that includes this PR game, which seems to be all about amusing the media.

Gravatar Bush also has addressed the same issues in a special video-tape prepared for Arab-American audiences.

Naw, he wasn't speaking Arabic. It jes' sounds that way sometimes...

GravatarIf any of Mr. Hersh’s anonymous sources wish to come forward and offer evidence to the contrary, the department welcomes them to do so.

Anyhoo, it was pretty sweet to forget about the political shit for a few hours...

GravatarI'm giving a penny for every wingnut who has ever said "Klintoon", and a penny for every nutcase who thinks Bush bears no responsibility for what has happened on his watch in the last three and a half years...

I may be cashing out the old 401k, but hey - I figure that'll only be worth about 50 cents with four more years of Bush, so I'll gladly take the gamble.

GravatarRCSanders > "Republicans. Protecting your Constitutional right to free kiddie porn."

From the article: Over two years, the groups said, ISPs trying to obey blocking orders were forced to cut access to at least 1.5 million legal Web sites that had nothing to do with child pornography or even legal pornography, but shared Internet addresses with the offending sites. When a service provider blocked the address for a child-porn site, it wiped out the entire cluster.

In plain English, Internet filtering software is not refined enough to only filter out what it's intended to filter -- it filters out a whole lot more. Kind of like trying to drive a one penny nail with a double jack.

Are you old enough to remember that right around the bicentennial there was a real rush of fake/real documents like the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, all printed on old-feeling paper? We had a bunch framed in my house, right next to the styrofoam bald eagle. By the logic of Ms. Lines, that proves the point!

GravatarI'm not the one who gave Bush his anal cyst. He prayed to the dark powers for that. On the other hand, something similar might be done, perhaps on the top of his nose?

GravatarWhen Bush criticizes Kerry for voting for the war (authorization actually) nad now criticizing it, why doesn't Kerry compare it to the teenager son who you give the car keys to, then after he runs a red light and totals it (the car) he tells his dad, "It's just as much you're fault, after all you gave me the keys."

GravatarMy grirl friend, Melissa, was flipping thru the channels and briefly paused on a show (South Psrk?), where it seemed like Bu(puke)sh is planning a preemtive strike on some place called Heaven!

Has anyone heard ANYTHING about this? Does this show have any credibility?

GravatarNYMary: "Are you old enough to remember..."

unfortunately, not, I was born a year before the bicentennial...

GravatarOh, Yeah, forgot

TIA

Gravatarjust hit AP wire -- more Bush TANG questions, re: flight simulators

GravatarJesus Dem--nice idea!

Gravatarwhy don't you just grab a $10 bill and run it through a photocopier.

Why don't you just grab your ankles and ram it with a cucumber?

agave:
Dropping a cucumber.
"what the hell?!"

GravatarAnd any meno's surface saying anything about me and that cucumber are FORGED!

GravatarUh,oh. Kevin Drum just posted that General Hodges told ABC that CBS told him the memos were handwritten when they spoke with him, and that "If he wrote them, that's what he felt." He said he didn't see the documents in the 70's and he thinks they are a fraud.

From one of the CBS stories:

Maj. Gen. Hodges, who confirmed the authenticity of the documents to a CBS reporter who read them to him over the phone and who replied that "these are the things that Killian had expressed to me at the time."

Whether the notes were handwritten or not, Hodges is quoted as saying that.

He confirmed that the sentiments and tone of the Killian memos are consistent with Killian's contemporaneous comments.

So if Hodges really wants to play that game, here we go: Was Hodges lying then, or is he lying now?

GravatarI just read that AP story...it implies that Bush may have been impaired when it came to flying at the end. You know I am getting the feeling that all this is leading to something else. I can smell it. It's like this weird mystery novel.

Gravatarcucumber= cutecumber

No, I mean,.... Oh fuckit!

No, No, I mean........

Oh, baby.. OH BABY....... DAMN YOU,,,,, Yoou Big GREEN, THING!!

(shit, is this thing on?)

GravatarThe AP Article all but says he was too fucking high to fly.

Wow!

"Air Force experts who examined the records at the request of AP said the logs could reflect anything from problems in Bush's flight performance to a shortage of available fighter jets.

``Maybe he had a problem, but I wouldn't assume that. You can't tell,'' said retired Air Force Col. Leonard ``Jack'' Walls, a former flight instructor at an Alabama Air National Guard unit where Bush temporarily served.
...
The logs also show that Bush, who throughout his career usually landed his jet with a single pass, required two passes to land the F-102A fighter simulator March 12 and a regular fighter jet April 10, 1972. His last flight as an Air National Guard pilot came six days later ."

GravatarHodges is embarassed to be named in public as a source in this. He is a Bush fan, and is backpeddling.

GravatarSo if Hodges really wants to play that game, here we go: Was Hodges lying then, or is he lying now?

The hilarious part of all this is that they're trying to argue that Bush never received special favors to get into or to goof off once within the Guard. When that's just fucking obvious.

It's the same thing with, well, the WMDs. The pretense that a lie is no lie unless it's proven utterly and techincally to the nth degree, and damn common sense. Oh and these same rules of judgement only apply to us, not to you.

GravatarIf you think you can't afford to give now, imagine what you will feel like after four more years of Bush/Cheney. Then give!

GravatarGrand Plan

Imagine. For months analysts have asserted that the American military is spread too thin, and used pejorative terms like "backdoor draft" to refer to the deployment of National Guard and military reserve forces in Iraq. Many have had the temerity to suggest that the unpopular deployments are another consequence of the Bush Administration's failure to contingency plan for an extended post-war occupation.

As it turns out, President Bush is merely applying an oft-overlooked lesson from the Vietnam War. Namely, the active armed forces of the United States military might do in a pinch, but if you want the job done right, look no further than the National Guard. In a 1988 interview with Connie Chung, President Bush foreshadowed his preference for National Guard forces:

CONNIE CHUNG: The problem, though, would be is if, indeed, made several phone calls or some people made phone calls on his behalf to get him into the National Guard. I mean, did that happen to you? Were you...

GWB (interrupting): No. I don't think so. But in those days, people were going into the service all different branches. And if you want to go into the National Guard, I guess sometimes people make calls. I don't see anything wrong with, a matter of fact I'm glad he served his country. And serving in the National Guard is serving in the military. They probably should have called the National Guard up in those days. Maybe we'd have done better in Vietnam.

Having had a unique opportunity to assess the (in)effectiveness of active duty soldiers while assiduously manning his posts in Texas, Alabama, and Massachusetts, then Lt. Bush made his eagerness to be sent to Vietnam to relieve young men who had been drafted in his place known to his superiors. In a memo entitled "CTA" recently released by the RNC from the personal files of a Lt. Colonel Killian, Lt. Colonel Killian wrote that Lt. Bush had suggested that he and his TANG unit be sent over to Vietnam to "cover their asses," referring to active military forces. Although liberals have pointed out that the authenticity of the memo, which was written on Bush White House stationery, was in doubt, media outlets have noted that FOX News has vouched for the memo and "that's good enough for them."

This new information should put to rest any lingering questions about President Bush's leadership in the War in Iraq. Indeed, Presdient Bush's only regret is having not sent the National Guard in earlier. "If I had followed my gut and let the National Guard take the lead from the beginning instead of those damn military regulars," President Bush recently remarked, "we'd be in Tehran by now."

Gravatar"With the revival of questions about whether President Bush fulfilled his National Guard duty, some of Kerry's critics have begun to focus on what Kerry did in the Naval Reserve, asking why he hasn't released records of his reserve service."
www.boston.com/news/politics/ 9-11

This is pretty funny!
Maybe this is why Kerry always wins at the end. They are just chumps beating up on another Vietnam vet...
Kerry wins.

GravatarI just read that AP story...it implies that Bush may have been impaired when it came to flying at the end. You know I am getting the feeling that all this is leading to something else. I can smell it. It's like this weird mystery novel.

That's why I love politics. It's sometimes like a bad soap opera, and I just can't wait for the next episode. But when people start getting killed, it becomes another thing.

Or more to yor point, have you ever read a mystery novel like an Agatha Christy. At the end, after you have virtually studied this thing, going to bed going over what you've read that day, the resolution ends up involving things and people you have no way of knowing about from what you've read?

This is what you are expecting?

GravatarGive money if you can, give time if you can, give both if you can. I spent the afternoon babysitting the local Dem office while the staffers were at a meeting. Constant flow of phone calls and walk-ins looking for Kerry signs and bumper stickers, volunteer registrars dropping off stacks of new voter registrations. One guy picking up volunteer forms for a house party he's having in his exceedingly Republican upper middle class neighborhood--he has 30 people coming to his party. They're getting a phenomenal number of new voter registrations from college students. My 55-year old boyfriend has NEVER VOTED IN HIS LIFE, but he's registered and you'd need an Uzi to keep him away from the polls this time.

As a college prof, I can testify that 4 years ago almost all of my students had the attitude, "Ummmm, I'm not really *interested* in politics, 'K?" Not so this time. forget the polls of "likely" voters. The "unlikely" voters will be out in droves in Nov and they haven't been jolted out of their political apathy by a burning desire to re-elect W.

Volunteer somewhere. Not only is it a Good Thing to do, it'll really cheer you up.

GravatarTexas

Thanks, I feel the same way here in PA, loads of new registered voters, mostly college and some older folks who have never voted before, but feel this election is important and that their vote counts. Also all are anti-Bush.

GravatarSorry for the double post--is it just my computer or my ISP, or has Eschaton slowed to a crawl the last couple of days? Can't load it at all 3 times out of four--just get an endlessly spinning cursor.

GravatarTexas, Thats okay, Your message is loud and clear.

GravatarSomeone cited William Rivers Pitt, so I went and collected this summary of Bush's failures. I'd like to invite some help with a little project.
What I'd like to do is present this to wavering voters I know, by using Pitt's list as a starting point, then add a link to a site that proves the point. VERY FACTUALLY.
In other words, where it says, millions of jobs lost, what's the best link and is there another sentence that can beef up the statement? I know that facts aren't going to win over the loonies but I still think there are some sensible but unclued-in people ought there who aren't paying attention. All help is welcome.

Millions of jobs lost in the last four years;

Unbearably expensive health care;

A total loss of confidence within the international community in our moral leadership;

The underfunded farce that is the Department of Homeland Security;

The underfunded farce that is the No Child Left Behind bill;

The fact that military assault weapons will soon be making a perfectly legal return to a neighborhood near you;

The deeply illegal outing of a deep-cover CIA agent by Bush administration officials, who did it because they wanted to silence a critic;

The rape and torture of men, women and children in the Abu Ghraib prison, horrors that were sanctioned in writing by Bush's own lawyer and the Secretary of Defense;

The allegation by Senator Bob Graham of Florida that Bush torpedoed any aspect of the 9/11 investigation that came within spitting distance of his friends in the Saudi royal family;

The allegations by several generals that Bush's people started stripping necessary troops and resources from Afghanistan to bolster their ill-conceived charge into Iraq;

The myriad accusations by a dozen insiders that Bush and his people ignored the terror threat until the Towers fell, and then used the attacks to scare the American people into an unnecessary war in Iraq and a mammoth payday for their friends in the weapons and oil business;

The fact that no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq;

The fact that no connections between Hussein, bin Laden and 9/11 have been established beyond the bloviating hyperbole of a few senior Bush officials who haven't yet gotten the memo;

Does anyone even remember Enron?

GravatarHelp!!! I'm trapped in TN where I'm surrounded by ignorant rednecks who equate voting Democratic with gun control!!! They don't understand that job security, affordable health care, tax reform for "normal" people, and rebuilding foreign policy are all GOOD things that they would benefit from. Instead, all they think about is hunting season. If I see one more B/C yardsign on my way to work, I'm gonna' puke!

GravatarBTW, I forgot to mention, my ride to work... it's a new job I got 3 weeks ago after being "displaced" by my old company. My position was sent to India!!!

GravatarSorry, have $50 earmarked for the Civil War Preservation Trust. I just don't have the money.

Besides, until Kerry really wows me with something, my wallet is closed.

He's getting my vote, which will have to do for the moment.

GravatarAdam 4-4-2 don't be an asshole. Kerry needs the money. Do you want to be responsible for keeping a pedophile in the White House.

Civil War bullshit. Your country needs you now.

Gravatar"Kerry's critics have begun to focus on what Kerry did in the Naval Reserve, asking why he hasn't released records of his reserve service."

Who would dare attack Kerry on his service. He wasn't in the Naval Reserve. He joined the Navy to fight in Viet Nam. More lies from the swift vets. Only a pussy would join the Naval Reserves.
