She is absolutely amazing. I got to meet her at the March for Women's Lives this past April, and hear her play, she was absolutely amazing - actually much wilder and more interesting than her playing at the Planned Parenthood benefit in NYC. I highly recommend folks check her out, truly truly truly wickedly wild music. I'd say a bit of The Roaches and the Indigos Girls influences, with other female vocalists thrown in.

Aha! I thought the same thing, but my better half (who is far more a music geek than I) said that the earlier Shivaree release is an EP, and the new full album is due out a few months later.

There are compelling arguments on both sides re the 60 minutes documents. Seems to me it could be a pretty straightforward exercise to compare the 60-minute TANG memos to other typed documents coming out of that office during the same period.

Help will be on the way when Bush and Cheney choke each other to death on Nov. 3.
one might reasonably expect the following totals by the end of a 2nd Bush term:
Killed....approx 4,560
Wounded....approx 25,580
Data indicate that 15% of Vietnam Vets came home with chronic Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ..so expect the same frequency from Iraq ...unkown number will have it but it will be in the thousands.
You know, I just want to thank all the idiotic moderates out there - Drum, Marshall, Ezra, Yglesias - who rolled over and pissed all over themselves at the first sign of the moronic brownshirt fuck "disinformation" campaign regarding the Killian memos. There is absolutely, positively not a hint of a shred of a clue of credible evidence that these memos have been "forged," but as soon as the brownshirt stormtroopers started typing in their scripts, the Capitulaing Moderate Blogger Brigade had their usual panic attack and fell all over themselves trying to kiss up to the right. Instead of asking any questions regarding the ridiculous and easily disproved (hey, "bloggers" - ever heard of "Google"?) claims regarding the state of typewriter art at the time of the memos' production, they started wringing their hands and getting all nervous and flushed in the face and, instead of standing up to the incredibly ridiculous conspiracy theories of the right-wing bully boys, they did what they usually do and started goosestepping right along.
Thanks for fucking nothing, you pricks. You pulled the same shit when you all went along with Bush's most excellent Iraq adventure, and not a fucking one of you has ever acknowledged the blood on your hands, much less apologized to the huge numbers of your readers who had the balls to say "bullshit" and hit the bricks in protest while you sat in Starbucks with your laptops clucking your tongues and giving handjobs to the likes of Ken "I'm Getting It As Wrong As I Can" Pollack.
As far as I'm concerned, you've given aid and comfort to the enemy for the last time. You can all go fuck yourselves. You're no better than the media whores you pretend to replace, and from this point forward, will be treated as such.
Fuck you moderate sell-outs in hell.

Philip D. Bouffard, a forensic document examiner in Ohio who has analyzed typewritten samples for 30 years, had expressed suspicions about the documents in an interview with the New York Times published Thursday, one in a wave of similar media reports. But Bouffard told the Globe yesterday that after further study, he now believes the documents could have been prepared on an IBM Selectric Composer typewriter available at the time.

I agree with Dave's sentiments -- it's hard to understand why people were discussing the intricate mechanical details of 60's era typewriters all day today, and saying, "Gosh, are they forgeries?" instead of saying, "Yeah, this asshole who had the nerve to smear Kerry's war record by proxy, is the same one who weaseled out of his commitment to the National Guard. Here's proof."
Over and over again.

I've heard of her, but not heard her. Listening to the new Guided By Voices, Twilight Singers and Drive-By Truckers these days. If you haven't heard "The Dirty South" by the latter band, go over to iTunes and check it out. "Puttin' People On The Moon" just chokes me up whenever I listen to it:
PUTTIN' PEOPLE ON THE MOON
Mary Alice had a baby and he looked just like I did
We got married on a Monday and I been working ever since
Every week down at the Ford Plant but now they say they're shutting down
Goddamned Reagan in the White House and no one there gives a damn
Double Digit unemployment, TVA be shutting soon
While over there in Huntsville, They puttin' people on the moon
So I took to runnin' numbers for this man I used to know
And I sell a few narcotics and I sell a little blow
I ain't getting rich now but I'm gettin' more than by
It's really tough to make a living but a man just got to try
If I died in Colbert County, Would it make the evening news?
They too busy blowin' rockets, Puttin' people on the moon
Mary Alice quit askin' why I do the things I do
I ain't sayin' that she likes it, but what else I'm gonna do?
If I could solve the world's problems I'd probably start with hers and mine
But they can put a man on the moon
And I'm stuck in Muscle Shoals just barely scraping by
Mary Alice got cancer just like everybody here
Seems everyone I know is gettin' cancer every year
And we can't afford no insurance, I been 10 years unemployed
So she didn't get no chemo so our lives was destroyed
And nothin' ever changes, the cemetery gets more full
And now over there in Huntsville, even NASA's shut down too
Another Joker in the White House, said a change was comin' round
But I'm still workin' at The Wal Mart and Mary Alice, in the ground
And all them politicians, they all lyin' sacks of shit
They say better days upon us but I'm sucking left hind tit
And the preacher on the TV says it ain't too late for me
But I bet he drives a Cadillac and I'm broke with some hungry mouths to feed
I wish I'z still an outlaw, was a better way of life
I could clothe and feed my family still have time to love my pretty wife
And if you say I'm being punished. Ain't he got better things to do?
Turnin' mountains into oceans Puttin' people on the moon

Don't know her music but I sure like these words.
She should write a song about that wonderful new word "squeaming". That's something liberals can really beat themselves up over and it might
actually do them some good.
We tend to be nervous nellies and to think that we've got to just accept that our opponents will get away with their lies. That only can happen if we allow them to. Self doubt when the evidence is on our side is silly and counter productive.
When have conservatives relied on real, not-produced-to-specification-for-profit information? Just about never. Our media is saturated with it but that doesn't mean we have to lie down and let it soak us.

have you heard it tonight
have you cured your addiction
they're both damaged and white
wanna cure your affliction
soybeans help women with menopause symptoms
but there it is on tv, tv
it's
john john's in the house
he draws a crowd
he's got his medals gleamin
john john's got the move
he's got the groove
he's got me soothed and screamin
john john's got the brawn
he's taken over my lawn
broke my blender
ralphie is the one
but i must live with john john till november
do you feel like a liar
do you feel like a hypocrite
you're torn by desire
wanna go to both benefits
run for your life
it's the heat of july
and then there it is on tv, tv
it's
john john's in the house
he's gettin down
he's tried his hand at bakin
john john's got the glow
he stole the show
his hand is sore from shakin
john john plays the part
he's chowin on tofutti
dent my fender
ralphie has my heart
but i must live with john john till november
i hate to watch debates
you cut him out
you cut him out
and in the florida race
you cut them out
you cut them out
but
john john's in the house
he's spoutin proust
he's got good elocution
john john's walking tall

Some lefty bloggers are so scared to be on the wrong side of an issue (afraid of the wrath LGF nutters) and give the Right far too much credit for staking out the "right" position. Marshall was wrong about Iraq and he is wrong about typewriter gate.

where is the outrage; absolute and determined at the undermining of america by the right-wing machine?
what about plame, yellow-cake, guantanamo, abu-ghraib, osama, afghanistan, iraq, north korea.
china dictating our monetary policy?
what about drilling in arctic refuge for SUVs?
what about arsenic in water - or sulfur for clean skies?
what about legislating hate?
what about attempting to undermine a woman's right to choose?
what about jeebus-freek judges?
what about the economy and the lack of job creation...smack 'em on how the economy is good for the richest of the rich - only!

From the NYT:
Mr. Kerry's advisers concede that the drumbeat of attacks from Mr. Bush has been effective. But divisions have surfaced in the campaign and in the party over how best - and how far - to take on Mr. Bush.
adn then:
Officials said these attacks were being made through the party and not the campaign to provide a measure of distance from Mr. Kerry, who is described by many officials as reluctant himself to impugn the president's character.
Now, the more difficult question, officials say, is just how the Kerry campaign - even if Mr. Kerry does not take part directly - should go after Mr. Bush. Some of Mr. Kerry's closest friends and longtime political operatives from Boston, who have now set up shop at Democratic headquarters in Washington, are pressing for more, saying the campaign and the candidate must go on the offensive, to restore Mr. Kerry's own character as a political asset and to hold Mr. Bush accountable for attacks on Mr. Kerry.
These friends and former aides, led by David Thorne, a Yale classmate, fellow Navy veteran and brother of Mr. Kerry's first wife, are agitating for the candidate himself to answer what they called the character-assassination attacks of people like Vice President Cheney and members of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. They are pushing for Mr. Kerry to make a dramatic statement of his own to settle voters' doubts about Mr. Kerry's Vietnam War period.
Officials in the campaign, however, including both longstanding consultants like Bob Shrum and new additions like Joe Lockhart and other veterans of the Clinton administration, have balked at such a move, saying it could be a disaster and alienate too many swing voters who would view such an approach as mean-spirited. They said Mr. Kerry would do better to concentrate on issues where he outperforms Mr. Bush in polls, like jobs and health care.

Didnt we hear this three weeks ago?
"While Mr. Kerry's longtime friends from Boston privately express frustration that they have been unable to get Mr. Kerry to stand up for himself more, one senior Kerry aide said obliquely that the campaign still planned to address the attacks on Mr. Kerry in a dramatic way."
"You have not heard the last from us on this subject," the aide said."
Hey, I hope the strategy works, but why didnt they go negative when they had the lead. Now Rove will just convicne people that Kerry's is desperate. Mark my words-you will hear this line from the repubs really soon. It stills seems like nobody is in charge of that campaign

NYT has an excellent and thorough report today on CBS docs. Spoke to IBM and other typewriter experts. IBM spokesperson said they had proportional spacing since 1944. Lexmark (IBM's printer division sold to Lexmark in 80's) person said there was custom-fitted superscripting in those days.
In any case, superscripting should not be an issue anymore, since CBS and others have shown other TANG Bush docs
had same kind of superscripting.

Wapo's Howard Kurtz didn't advance the story. Some drivel warmed over from yesterday.
Wapo - Rather Defends CBS Over Memos on Bush

Something really odd here. Link upthread.

I acknowledge that you are the unrivaled expert in running successful presidential campaigns, but one thing you might include in the calibration of your recommended response is the fact that the vast, vast majority of voters do stuff other than read and post on blogs, and so are not quite as well versed as you and I are in the exquisite details of of moral corruption of the chimp and his minions. I think the big dog is right when he advises Kerry to give people a reason to vote FOR him.

These are people talking to the NYT-friends of Kerry saying this, not Rove. Each that goes by, I become angrier at Bush and his lies. His lies are old, but somehow the Kerrry campaign cannot blunt them. The last 2 elections are best that it is going to get with regard to the issues. Gore: good economy, peaceful world. Kerry: big deficit, bad job market, quagmire, etc.. But somehow Kerry is struggling to find a strategy. If Bush wins and hte economy recovers, then how wil Dems win the nextn prez race. The problem I see with the campaign is that every few weeks they come out and say "just wait, we are really going to attack bush". Then I hear W is for wrong. That is not an attack. Another problem is that rhe repub strategy has been to ridicule Kerry, while Kerry only wants to talk about day to day policies.

I can't find copies of the Killian's memos, but weren't at least a couple of them labeled "Memo to File?" If so, Killian wrote those memoes to himself to document what he was seeing and doing; they were probably not meant to be circulated. They were CYA. His widow's and son's claims that he would never have written them is ridiculous. He could still have been confronting the issue overtly, but written the memoes to cover his tracks.

That he is wimpy, and at least Bush seems "strong" This has nothing to do with issues but is more of a gut and viceral feeling. This is what Kerry does not understand. He thinks issues are going to win it for him. that is what Gore thought. Even some bush strategist have admitted in the past that if they had to run on issues, that they would lose

I just posted this over at Drum-shit's site:
Hey guys, I’m starting to like this rational, agnostic and moderate way of thinking, and I am considering joining forces with your gang, but first I have a few questions to get out of the way.
Since it wouldn’t be rational, agnostic or moderate to change Presidents during a time of war, what is going to be the rational, agnostic and moderate take when the ReThugs start talking up invading Iran in 2005?
What is the rational, agnostic and moderate response going to be to Patriot Act II?
Since nuclear weapons are soon going to be a dime a dozen thanks to Bush reversing Clinton’s irrational, atheistic and radical plan to stop North Korea from proliferating these weapons, what is the rational, agnostic and moderate response going to be to Al Qaida detonating atomic bombs in the US?
What will the rational, agnostic and moderate response be to the Safe Haven Act of 2007 that calls for “protection centers” to be built for all US Muslims, protestors, and homosexuals?
Since we know the Right will collaborate and the Left will fight to its last man, what will be the rational, agnostic and moderate response to George W. Bush, in early 2008, cutting and running on his country for a second time and signing an unconditional surrender document in the presence of Osama bin Laden?
Get back to me soon guys.

I think one of the most important thing that any of us can do if we want to save ourselves from the Bush administration, is to understand how in holy hell almost half the nation can still give positive approval ratings to this catastrophic administration.
I did a little project for the Kerry campaign, and it was extremely enlightening. I think the answer to that is extreme media bias in the small markets; television especially and also the small newspapers.
Maybe you libs would like to organize to do some media watch in small markets. You can go to Media Resources to find all the information you need to start a project like that.

The Republicans in power do not stand for "Security"; any more than a Wolf guards a Henhouse.
This is precisely the echo-chamber meme we need to puncture, and simply replace with a crystal-clear view of the unvarnished truth regarding their actions, and the consequenses those actions have had, and will have for our country.
Exhibit A: The US and the world is a whole lot less secure on their "watch", which they had to steal in the first place.
What kind of upstanding representatives of "Law and Order" disrespect the People Of The United States enough to steal an election?
I never in a million years thought I would agree with Patrick Buchannan, of all people, but I guess desperate times reveal fundamental truths:
As Mr. Buchannan himself pointed out in a recent editorial, what Mr. Bush actually does have is a talent for projecting a belief in his own ideology.
Mr. Buchannan (an arch-conservative of the old school) goes on to point out that the fact that Mr. Bush's ideology is dead wrong is entirely beside the point.
What they are "great" at is portraying themselves as "conservative", at wrapping themselves in the Flag, and at using all sorts of dishonest nonsense and dirty tricks to manipulate the American people, whom they view as rubes that deserve to be fleeced.
But the truth is, as one blogger recently put it so well, that the current crop of Republicans are actually "Conservative like a Butcher is an Animal Lover".
The reality is that these particular "conservatives" are dangerous, loose cannons who believe in nothing but taking whatever they can get, wherever they can get it.
"Federally Protected Arctic Refuge?" they say with a straight face to the American People, "Nonsense! We're gonna drill out the oil. That's our land, not yours."
Responsible?? To whom??
To the Oil Interests, that's who.
Allowing the overwhelmingly successful ban on assault weapons to lapse after it has saved thousands of lives over the past 10 years, especially at a time when we are in the midst of dealing with an extremely severe rash of terrorists, is simply not the behaviour of a responsible party that is truly concerned with the best interests and the actual Security of the men, women, children, and infrastructure of our country.
The police (who are not, generally speaking, flaming liberals) agree that allowing assault weapons back into the mix is not merely a bad idea:
since it will almost certainly make it easier for terrorists to access these weapons, it is actually an awful idea.
How on God's earth is allowing an all-time-record Surplus to transform itself in 4 years into an all-time-record Trillion Dollar Deficit an example of "Responsible" behaviour on the part of anyone with the actual "Security" of this country at heart???
Carrying a few bags of ice and writing a nice fat check with our red ink doth not a responsible "Leader" make

According to Clarke and other insiders, Bush, Cheney, and their colleagues often appeared to dismiss the threat from Al Qaeda purely because that threat had been a primary concern of the Clinton administration. Indeed, Bill Clinton has said he tried to warn Bush that bin Laden would demand attention as the number one danger to US security.
how these fuckers could be running on this issue, and leading, is beyond me. but i do think we will be attacked again, sometime some how. it's not like they have actually done anything to protect infrastructure. well, the beggining of a police state. i guess that's something.

Then your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to demonstrate categorically how the bush administration is the very antithesis of libertarianism/conservatism. However, most people don't live in areas with good quality newspapers, and get their news from biased little rags and two-bit local channels, as I cited above. (GUESS who owns most of those?)

I just think that needs repeating.
CNN this am is still playing forgery clips that are worthy of the segregationist press of the fifties, integrity-wise. Maybe in forty or fifty years someone will buy them out and similarly issue an apology.
Their authenticity stands, having survived all the ridiculous arguments about kerning and fonts.
We all knew already that Nero was getting special treatment, starting with his admission into the National Guard ahead of many more qualified people.
We already knew that he had refused to take a required physical examination.

The only question now is: what was Nero's punishment for defying a direct order?
