I am dancing right now. Kerry does look more presidential.
Fact check--the stuff about the uranium and spending...does anyone know the answer? Did Bush spend less or more?
I think if Kerry's goal was to appear definitive, and presidential, he did.
Bush looked like he was on the defensive or he'd swallowed a lobster whole.
Kerry looks so calm and collected and secure. I don't think Bush flopped, but he looked strangely uncomfortable throughout this whole thing.
My theory is, he needs an audience. If he just has Jim Lehrer's dark eyes boring into him, he doesn't quite know what to do. He needs some adulation, laughs, some sort of feedback...
and HE:S NOT GETTING ANY!
Bush is rambling.

Smirky mentioned AQ Khan twice, Chi Trib slams him on AQ Khan tomorrow. A leading American newspaper has criticised the Bush administration for letting go Pakistan so easily over the AQ Khan affair.
In an editorial on Thursday, the Chicago Tribune said President Bush did not try to persuade President Musharraf to allow US or IAEA officials to question Dr Khan. Wrote the paper, “Bush can’t let Musharraf off the hook. International authorities need to know everything Khan knows. Without direct access to Khan, the world can have little confidence that his entire network is being rolled up, that black marketers across the world are being arrested and brought to justice. In many ways, that’s as crucial to the war on terror as finding Bin Laden...” - Chicago Tribune, Oct 1 2004, via login-free Daily Times of Pakistan

In the howling wind comes a stinging rain
See it driving nails
Into the souls on the tree of pain
From the firefly, a red orange glow See the face of fear
Running scared in the valley below
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue
Bullet the blue
In the locust wind comes a rattle and hum
Jacob wrestled the angel
And the angel was overcome
You plant a demon seed
You raise a flower of fire
See them burning crosses
See the flames higher and higher
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue
Bullet the blue
This guy comes up to me
His face red like a rose on a thorn bush
Like all the colors of a royal flush
And he's peeling off those dollar bills
Slapping them down
One hundred, two hundred
And I can see those fighter planes
And I can see those fighter planes
Across the mud huts where the children sleep
Through the alleys of a quiet city street
You take the staircase to the first floor
Turn the key and slowly unlock the door
As a man breathes into a saxophone
And through the walls you hear the city groan
Outside is America
Outside is America
Across the field you see the sky ripped open
See the rain through a gaping wound
Pounding on the women and children
Who run
Into the arms
Of America

My previous post about how I could see the podium/height adjustments on my C-SPAN split-screen left out the fact I know Fox was doing the camera work.
I apologize for insinuating C-SPAN is a bullshit news org; I was a bit excited at seeing so clearly the blatant propaganda, and so left out the fact Fox had the cameras.
While I'm at it though, I would like to ask others to pay attention to Libertarian Brian Lamb's C-SPAN, especially C-SPAN2/BookTV, to see if it isn't rather definitively right-wingish, as I, perhaps prejudiced, believe is the case...

Oh yeah -- and tell Alterman that he had a brain fart when he wrote that political musical projects are rarely artistically successful. He knows that isn't true, he did not mean to say it, and it is never an appropriate response to critics to assert that one is the world's leading authority on a subject and that no-one has a right to take exception.
Kerry will be President on January 20, 2005, or the American democratic experiment will be over.

Now, kids, think strategically.
Kerry won. But what's the running campaign clip.
None. Rules of Engagement.
GOP spin: Flip-flop comes back. Global Test. Pacify North Korea. But it won't hold.
In other words, the gap is closed. Noticeable poll shift to Kerry. But nothing is over.
Sasso's got to stay on and time the accelerator. Take it to the finish.
In other words, it's a race. Kerry avoided getting closed out. But it's wide open; Game 7 tied in the top of the eighth.

I tried real hard to watch this as someone undecided might have seen it (hard as it is for me to imagine how anyone could still be undecided). My take, with the caveat that I watched it on C-SPAN, with the split-screen throughout:
-- First half-hour, narrowly to Bush. On message of course, but Kerry's main problem was he missed some opportunities to absolutely nail Bush to the wall. That said, Bush clearly seemed annoyed while Kerry spoke -- something that quickly got into the AP updates, and was so noticeable that a couple minutes ago even Wolf Blitzer said something like "some would say Bush was smirking." (he definitely used the word "smirking.")
-- roughly the second half hour, Kerry did better, with the clear highlight being when he called Bush on the suggestion that Iraq "attacked us" on 9/11. Bush, Cheney et al previously had been quite deft in making that false connection in a way that allowed themselves to say they weren't really making the connection. Bush was not nearly as artful tonight and Kerry. Kerry still missed other opportunities, though -- especially in not pointing out Bush's many flip-flops.
-- last half hour I thought Kerry did well while Bush grew increasingly flustered. Kerry's firm answer "nuclear proliferation" to the "biggest threat" question was very good, and left Bush unable to do much more than agree with him. Kerry the ex-prosecutor also delivered a forceful closing statement, much better than Bush's.
ABC just reported quickie poll, 46% say they thought Kerry won, 35% thought Bush did.

I really liked how Kerry called Bush on it when Bush started conflating Iraq with 9/11, saying he invaded because we'd been attacked -- AWESOME stuff.

Has anyone else been somewhat surprised by the actual quality of this debate? I think it has been a pretty good presentaion of each side's arguments with a reasonable chance at rebuttal. I think both candidates are staying within the rules ( which by the way, do not seem nearly as onerous as they were described before the debate).
In short, I think we just had a pretty OK quality debate. This is good because in dsuch a format we win hands down because the facts are on our side. Bush is looking bad and he has absolutely no "unfairness' cover to hide behind. It was all better than I thought it would be. I'm watching PBS and I really don't have anything to bitch about in terms of camera angles, etc. Bush seems to look at the camera a little more but that seems to be on his initiative.

I watched the debate with a Democratic voter in Colorado.
We got a HUGE laugh out of the two-faced boy king repeating his line about how "hard it is."
It's hard. Did anyone consider the fact that the decisions the president has to make -- even if he is not king -- are hard? O! My god! Those were the best parts of the debate -- even apart from the boy king making a nuisance of himself and boldy demanding a repetiitive response.
It was fun to see Lehrer set up the two-faced boy king by asking for a response to a particulaur Kerry point. The king could only say, "Well, I can't add to what I've said already."
O! The king well displayed his lack of clothing tonight.
Even still, on local NYC NBC -- maybe it was national? -- the spin was provided by Giuliani. Jee-zus!

"Methinks Paul is a troll."
There may be two on this thread, but I am not a troll. I'm a protester, and a lifelong liberal Democrat.
Kerry's refusal to call Bush a liar, his insistence that Bush loves his country, his high-roadism doesn't play that well on the protester end of the equation.
But, as I said, I heard snippets on the radio, and didn't WATCH it. Looking at the TiVo'd version from CSPAN, Bush looks like the chumperator he is, weak and stupid, and uninformed, God, uninformed.
Few people would have heard this on radio, given the time. But I called two friends who were listening in their cars, and they said the same thing: they were shouting at their radios, because Kerry wasn't taking it to Bush on his persistent lying.
So what I'm saying is that the televisuals helped slant the debate more toward Kerry than the audio component, which favored Bush. That's probably predictable.
Bush's soundbites'll play better on Rush than his image plays on Scarborough.
This is good because in such a format we win hands down because the facts are on our side.
For many people, it's NOT facts...it's what's in their gut that matters. That's why this administration relies so much on the fear of terrorism. Don't think about the facts, just think about your fear. I won't worry about facts, I'll just worry about protecting you. That's Bush's message. It's stupid, of course, but it's appealing to a great many people.

Kerry sounded on task, clear, rested, and pounding home some pointss that he hasn't had the opportunity to get through the stenography of the campaign reporters. I was vastly relieved and impressed.

Oh, and BTW, why should Alterman be looking so glum?
We're working our asses off here, and he has the luxury of looking dour.
I've been catching glimpses of Kerry solely via CNN and the occasional bit of local news footage about the election that's shown down here in Brasil. As rabidly anti-Bush as anyone, I still can't say I've ever found Kerry particularly endearing. The motherfucker always came across as stiff. Fake, even. Ugly, too, which I guess counts with the Paris Hilton vote.
Tonight was fantastic. Not only was CNN international fairly balanced, both before and after the debates, but I actually found Kerry damn impressive. Solid, no bullshit, even likeable. The line about "we [me and Bush] don't need a tax cut--and we're the ones that are getting one" was terrific. He's still pretty damn ugly, especially when he smiles. Well shit, what can you do?
The democratic party could take a page out of the GOP playbook and go with one word repetition. It's effective, sadly. I say, "stubborn." The guy stubbornly refuses to look at reality. Stubbornly refuses to admit a mistake. Hell, maybe "stubborn" ain't the word. But somehow, take Bush's "certainty" and use it against him. It is his weakness. The Dem's talking points man opposite Karen Hughes (name?) was the first to hit it. They gotta milk it. Make him look bullheaded, foolhardy. That even plays psychologically on Americans' fears of another attack. I think Kerry got at it a little bit, tonight. He could have hit it more.

Re the "Let me finish," I noticed that too. Maybe he paused too long and was trying to think of something to say, and Lehrer started moving to the next question. In tonight's debate, Bush's emphasis on avoiding 'mixed signals' suggests that his conception of leadership requires steadfastness above all.
This helps to explain his inability to acknowledge unpleasant realities. It's leadership by hucksterism--the Ken Lay method.
Steadfastness has it's place among the qualities we expect of a leader but along with vision, skill and the capacity to make good decisions.
Steadfastness in the service of bad decisions is no virtue.

He said, "Kid, we only got
one question. Have you ever been arrested?"
And I proceeded to tell him the story of the Alice's Restaurant Massacre,
with full orchestration and five part harmony and stuff like that and all
the phenome... - and he stopped me right there and said, "Kid, did you ever
go to court?"
And I proceeded to tell him the story of the twenty seven eight-by-ten
colour glossy pictures with the circles and arrows and the paragraph on
the back of each one, and he stopped me right there and said, "Kid, I want
you to go and sit down on that bench that says Group W .... NOW kid!!"
And I, I walked over to the, to the bench there, and there is, Group W's
where they put you if you may not be moral enough to join the army after
committing your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly
looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father
rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me!

Kerry wiped the floor with the pResident!
In this month's Atlantic Monthly an Joseph M. Price, MD, writes a letter commenting on James Fallow's forward-looking piece about these debates (When George Meets John, July/August). The doctor concludes by speculating that Bush is showing symptoms of "presenile dementia". He goes on to suggest that Bush immediately seek a diagnosis and begin treatment with drugs that "offer the possibility of retarding the slow but inexorable course of the disease."
What did we see tonight?

Hey, was Bush wearing a wire? Looked like it from the back. And he kept tipping his head down like he was listening to something.
Is it possible he could have done so badly, even while getting the exam answers fed to him by a wire?
The evidence is there--all you need (i.e., the same amount they use for anti-Kerry smears: none). At this point I think the onus is on the president to come clean or deny it.
Are we having a whisper campaign yet?

Did Bush's indecisiveness in Fallujah come up tonight? I'm here in São Paulo, where they televised the FOUR HOUR (!) debate between all 12 candidates for mayor tonight, and I had to concede a a few minutes to my girlfriend, so perhaps I missed it.
As the media's been starting to talk about this, I thought it would've been opportune of Kerry to counter the "mixed signals" jibe (fuck did Bush get his money's worth out of that--anyone count how many times?) with Bush's mixed signals in Fallujah, which even the despicable Andrew Sullivan calls one of the turning points in the war.

I'm already bracing for the new talking point to make the rounds starting tomorrow: "Kerry won the debate but it's not going to have an effect on the election." Regardless, I think it's true that Kerry actually gave people a reason to vote for him on his own merits. And the best damn thing he did all night was to continually say portray himself as more can-do than Bush. "Just because Bush says bilateral talks with NK won't work doesn't mean that it can't be done." Excellent way of exposing Bush's incompetence by putting the ball in his court (and of course he can say nothing substantive because he is in fact incompetent as the last 3.5 years have shown).

Please dump and warm drink on Alterman's head! I ain't been right with that fool since he asked what he was going to do with a black man and called Barak Obama oh too good to be true! SUPREME ASSHOLE! I'd like to find a black man to find something to do with his white ass.
Big John was superb tonight. A picture of strength coupled to wisdom. There was no knockout punch. He just glowed, so strong was his presidential aura. Bush stuttered out bumper sticker slogans, Kerry laid out the facts.
Kerry is topping almost all instant polls, very significantly in most cases. And the Freepers are publicly tearing their hair out over how insufficient W looked.
I really think Big John caught third gear tonight. Soon, all Georgie will see is taillights!

Did Bush's indecisiveness in Fallujah come up tonight?
Kerry mentioned Fallujah in passing, saying something to the effect that unlike Bush he would not flinch in taking out the terrorists/insurgents, closing the borders, etc.

I have two 20-something daughters. Neither is vey political. Prior to the debate they were undecideds; despite, or perhaps because, my ranting a raving about W. Tonight they swung into the Kerry column. The reason: W. putting his daughters on a leash. Ha!
Did this sway other young women?

Murph - I was in Sao Paulo about 8 years ago with a performing artist, and I fell in love with the city.
we were coming down through a bank of clouds in the American Airlines DC-10 when I noticed it wasn't clouds at all, but factory emissions.
We had to drive miles and miled through shantytowns to reach the city outskirts propoer. Even then it took an hour to reach the city center, through mile upon mile of winding city streets, garage-front businesses, street vendors and bumper-to-bumper traffic.
I remember going to the top floor of our hotel in what must have been the most affluent sector of the city, and having a 360-degree view.. spinning completely around, the horizon of skyscrapers and shanytowns would not end in any direction. Being from New York, i'm not used to seeing such things.
Walking through the streets of San Paolo in 1996, native women with children at their feet offered to read my palm on the sidewalk; acquiesing, I sat down to 30 seconds of Portuguese which I did not understand, followed by an outstretched hand for more dinero.. grown men, inebriated, urinating in the streets, wandering forgotten in the middle of highway medians.. shirtless, shoeless children begging for food or money outside the Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonalds advertisements on every street corner while the rural Indian poor flocked in masses to the city center, no skills to trade, throwing themselves at the mercy of the banking capital of the nation, sleeping huddled in the subways.
God bless Brazil.

Old Gold30 I have a 20 yr old daughter and she is a complete Kerry fanatic. She carries voter registration cards with her. She is terrified about the Iraq war, and will stop at nothing until Kerry is elected. I wish they had mentioned the draft tonight, and put her mind a little at ease, because that is her biggest fear. She has no friend that isn't supporting Kerry. Unfortunately this is Calif and not a swing state.

WIRELESS RECEIVER-SHAPED BULGE UNDER BACK OF BUSH'S JACKET?
Did you notice the square-looking bulge tonight underneath the back of Bush's jacket? It looked like the outline of a wireless receiver. His odd eye movements and unnatural pauses at points also suggested that he was getting prompts through an earpiece (not that it helped him much tonight.)
www.dailykos had some speculation about a Bush earpiece in July, and published a photograph of Bush that showed another odd bulge on his back under his suit jacket (as he stalked away from reporters questioning him about Kenneth Lay.)
In March, I wrote about this on my occasional blog, www.filmbitch.com:

BAD ACTOR
Watching Bush perform I've often wondered if he is being fed prompts through an earpiece, the kind news anchors use. His speech patterns seem unnatural, not in the stumbling, inarticulate way of a dyslexic jock (the way Bush talks when he's really talking), but in a politician-under-remote-control way. His delivery lacks the whole-body involvement of speech that's actually being produced by the speaker.
Lately the effect seems more pronounced. Bush speaks entire sentences, sometimes whole paragraphs, with serial points and subordinate clauses, that are mysteriously punctuated with unnaturally long pauses, as if he's waiting for the next prompt to come through an earpiece. Or he'll pause for a protracted moment and then suddenly blurt out a few more words -- big words, sometimes. He looks abstracted, disengaged from his own language, almost like a simultaneous translator (if you can imagine Bush as a simultaneous translator). Maybe he's just learned his lines by heart, since he says the same things over and over every day. But there's a weird effect of delay in his delivery, like a bad actor's. And how is that he can suddenly speak English?
I asked a language scientist who studies dyslexia what he thought of my notion. He told me that having a speaker reproduce phrases fed through an earpiece is a much-used experimental device called "shadowing." Contrary to what I assumed, that it would be hard to speak with someone else's voice murmuring in your ear, the scientist said it's easy; it's only difficult if it's your own voice that you're hearing.
We all already know that Bush is a puppet in every way except perhaps literally, that what comes out of his mouth on public occasions was put there by others. Yet it would be an enormous fraud perpetrated on the American electorate if it were literally the case that Bush is Rove's dummy, and that he doesn't dare to speak to reporters without an aid/e in his ear, a la Broadcast News. Why haven't reporters written about this or asked the question directly in interviews and at news conferences? Television news people wear earpieces and must strongly suspect it if the president is doing so.
