Friends, if you were to interview Margaret Carlson--hypothetical for you, not so for me--what would you ask her? I'm especially interested in nailing her hackish complicity of the Bush administration's sins against democratic institutions and norms.

Now to the important stuff. Someone explain this for me.
BUSH: That's a loaded question. Well, first of all, I admire Senator Kerry's service to our country. I admire the fact that he is a great dad. I appreciate the fact that his daughters have been so kind to my daughters in what has been a pretty hard experience for, I guess, young girls, seeing their dads out there campaigning.
[...]
KERRY: ... I acknowledge that his daughters -- I've watched them. I've chuckled a few times at some of their comments.
[...]
BUSH: I'm trying to put a leash on them

I was bruised and battered and I couldn't tell
what I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
Saw my reflection in a window I didn't know
my own face
Oh brother are you gonna leave me
wasting away
On the streets of Philadelphia
I walked the avenue till my legs felt like stone
I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone
At night I could hear the blood in my veins
Just as black and whispering as the rain
On the streets of Philadelphia
Ain't no angel gonna greet me
It's just you and I my friend
And my clothes don't fit me no more
I walked a thousand miles
just to slip this skin
The night has fallen, I'm lyin' awake
I can feel myself fading away
So receive me brother with your faithless kiss
or will we leave each other alone like this
On the streets of Philadelphia
Is this what happens after Atrios endorses????????

Well, Gentlemen, I think we'd better start the meeting. Before we start, though, I'll ask the padre for a prayer.
Oh Lord, we beseech thee, have mercy on our faculty, Amen!!
Amen!
Crack the tubes, right! (Third Bruce starts opening beer cans) Er, Bruce, I now call upon you to welcome Mr. Baldwin to the Philosophy Department.
I'd like to welcome the pommy bastard to God's own earth, and I'd like to remind him that we don't like stuck-up sticky-beaks here.
Hear, hear! Well spoken, Bruce!
Now, Bruce teaches classical philosophy, Bruce teaches Haegelian philosophy, and Bruce here teaches logical positivism, and is also in charge of the sheepdip.
What's does new Bruce teach?
New Bruce will be teaching political science - Machiavelli, Bentham, Locke, Hobbes, Sutcliffe, Bradman, Lindwall, Miller, Hassett, and Benet.

Any questions?
New Bruce - are you a pooftah?
Are you a pooftah?
No!
No right, well gentlemen, I'll just remind you of the faculty rules: Rule one - no pooftahs. Rule two, no member of the faculty is to maltreat the Abbos in any way whatsoever - if there's anybody watching. Rule three - no pooftahs. Rule four - I don't want to catch anyone not drinking in their room after lights out. Rule five - no pooftahs. Rule six - there is no rule six! Rule seven - no pooftahs. That concludes the reading of the rules, Bruce.
This here's the wattle - the emblem of our land. You can stick it in a bottle or you can hold it in your hand.
Ah the memories- saw the Boss at the Vet (me and 66,000 others) back during the Born in the USA neverending tour in geez, maybe August 1985? (Almost twenty years ago? Damn!) 2nd row, on the field right in front of the stage owing to some extremely fortuitous timing in the ticket line. My friend and I had an extra ticket, so we invited then Philadelphia Inquirer columnist (and HUGE Bruce fan) Clark DeLeon to come with us. He took us out for a wallow at Dirty Franks and wrote up the show in his column (presumably so he could deduct the beer). As I recall, Bruce et al. kicked some serious ass. Yo!

Rick,
Maybe it's not totally on point, but I've always wanted to hear her answer questions about her autobiography that came out a year or two ago. In it, she traces her "liberal" background. Yet the very same book recounts the shallowness of her own interests once she made it into the media elite. She falls asleep listening to Hillary talk substance during her trip to Africa, she thinks it was more fun to mock Gore's small mistakes rather than Bush's big mistakes during 2000, and she made a point of ripping how Gore's plane didn't serve the reporters food that was as fancy as on the Bush plane. How are these concerns of a so-called liberal? Are these the issues that matter? Is this why she went into her profession? Isn't Bush the antithesis of all of that -- and shouldn't she CARE??
In short, I'd like to hear her explain how she isn't a media whore.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 - James L. Pavitt spent 31 years at the Central Intelligence Agency, the last five as head of the clandestine service, before retiring in August. But never, Mr. Pavitt said Friday, does he recall anything like "the viciousness and vindictiveness" now playing out in a battle between the White House and the C.I.A.
The tensions have simmered for years, mostly over intelligence about Iraq, including whether Iraq posed a threat. But in the last few weeks, they have surged into the open in a remarkable way, in a struggle in which both sides believe they have much at stake.
Already, the contents of classified intelligence estimates about Iraq have been leaked by people sympathetic to the C.I.A., to the considerable embarrassment of the White House. In response, the White House associated the documents' authors with "pessimists and naysayers," and President Bush initially dismissed one particularly damaging forecast as nothing more than a guess. And in newspaper columns in recent days, Republican partisans have variously described what is now afoot as part of an insurgency or vendetta being waged by the C.I.A. against the White House.
Maybe they'll collide like matter and anti-matter and destroy each other.

John Kerry must hit a home run in this debate. And if he does, and if ... if Bush does not come as prepared as he should, we could see this race tighten considerably ... we could see him turn this thing around ... what? What's that? The debate's over? Yes, yes, well, well let me say something ... unfortunately for John Kerry, one victory in one debate does not a president make.

I like Al Franken's idea of how one should debate Cheney. Franken was really peeved that Lieberman did not nail Cheney when he crowed: "the government had nothing to do with my [corporate] success". To which Franken would have replied: "Are you joking?!" Cheney was not a seasoned corporate exec when he took the Halligrafton job, he had been a life-long bureaucrat/legislator. We are to believe that Hallideath's spike in government contracts happened because Cheney was a bad-ass executive and not because of massive crony capitalism.

Has anyone ever heard the original Brinsley Schwartz (sp?) version of "What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding?" written by Nick Lowe (who played bass)? It's an ironic send-up of naive hippy-dippyism; only years later did Elvis Costello cover the song without irony and with anger (with Lowe producing).
There are very few songs that started out ironic, then became unironic; the only other example I can think of offhand is the Byrds "So You Want to Be a Rock-n-Roll Star," which they did as a joke, but which Patti Smith covered as a heroic prophet.

hoary--I don't know anything yet.
However, as a non-legal advisor, I at least don't expect to be observing counting processes. What I'll be doing is observing the polling places themselves, looking for problems or illegal practices, such as polls opening late or closing early, running out of ballots, people being denied a chance to vote, etc.

I am real proud of what we all are doing. Give yourselves a pat on the back.
Remember, it's not enough for Kerry to squeak by. He needs to have long coattails and a solid enough win to claim a mandate.
There are very few songs that started out ironic, then became unironic
In a slightly different way, "Born in the USA" started off ironic and became an anthem for the kind of Nationalism it was protesting.
And we come full circle.

What will it take to convince these people that this is not a year, or a time, to be dicking around? Americans are patrolling a front line in Afghanistan, where it would be impossible with 10 times the troop strength to protect all potential voters on Oct. 9 from Taliban/al-Qaida murder and sabotage. We are invited to believe that these hard-pressed soldiers of ours take time off to keep Osama Bin Laden in a secret cave, ready to uncork him when they get a call from Karl Rove? For shame.

The difference between wingnuts and progressives? Wingnuts only know the words to the chorus or hook (i.e., BOOORRRRN IN THE USA!) while progressives know all the lyrics, understand the meaning of the song and generally take the wingnut's woman off for a night of sex that turns all the switches and dials to 10.

You should really look into Diebold Central Tabulators. They're not voting machines, they are totalers: they receive absentee and mail-in ballots, and have all other voter info. entered.
If you're serious about (somewhat) honest elections, you should look into this.

Everyone must read this and pass it around and quote it whenever any idiot claims that we are only looking at the dark side of Iraq, that things are stabler there and that "freedom is on the march":
Despite President Bush's rosy assessments, Iraq remains a disaster. If under Saddam it was a 'potential' threat, under the Americans it has been transformed to 'imminent and active threat,' a foreign policy failure bound to haunt the United States for decades to come.
Iraqis like to call this mess 'the situation.' When asked 'how are thing?' they reply: 'the situation is very bad."
What they mean by situation is this: the Iraqi government doesn't control most Iraqi cities, there are several car bombs going off each day around the country killing and injuring scores of innocent people, the country's roads are becoming impassable and littered by hundreds of landmines and explosive devices aimed to kill American soldiers, there are assassinations, kidnappings and beheadings. The situation, basically, means a raging barbaric guerilla war"

I'm a staunch REM fan from the glorious Radio Free Europe single on, and while I think they jumped the shark the second Bill Berry left the band, these lyrics are very appropriate:
You're beautiful more beautiful than me
You're honorable more honorable than me
Loyal to the Bank of America
It's a sign of the times
You're sharpening stones, walking on coals
To improve your business acumen.
Sharpening stones, walking on coals,
To improve your business acumen.
Vested interest united ties, landed gentry rationalize
Look who bought the myth, by jingo, buy America
It's a sign of the times
'Let us not assassinate this man further Senator,
you've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir?
At long last, have you left no sense of decency?'
Enemy sighted, enemy met, I'm addressing the realpolitik
You've seen start and you've seen quit
(I'm addressing the table of content)
I always thought of you as quick

To anyone going to a different state to do volunteer observation or legal work during election week: Be careful. Use a local car if possible. Obey ALL traffic laws and then some. There is no such thing as a "LA Left" or "Yellow means go faster" to a sheriff who wants to disrupt civil rights work. Don't take anything you wouldn't want John Ashcroft to find in your pockets. If you're driving, make sure it's not going to expire in the time you have planned to be in another state. Have a easy to use calling card, and make sure you left contact info back home with a reliable friend who could deal with getting you bailed out if needed. Update that contact as needed while working. Take a cell phone, borrow one if you don't have one. Be fearless. You are doing a great service to our democracy.

"Friends, if you were to interview Margaret Carlson what would you ask her?"
I would want to get the quotes out of her book about how 'attacking Gore was easier' than going after Bush, and ask her when she realized she wasn't interested in the truth, when she lost her sense of responsibility to her readers.
She suggests that the WaPo wealth, and the come-on of rising in the economic scale deteriorated her values. But she thinks it's some kind of achievement, to whore herself.

The ragamuffin gunner is returnin' home, like a hungry runaway.
He walks through town all alone--"He must be from the fort," he hears the high school girls say.
His countryside's burnin' with wolfman fairies dressed in drag for homicide.
The hit-and-run plead sanctuary, 'neath a holy stone they hide.
They're breakin' beams and crosses with a spastic's reelin' perfection.
Nuns run bald through Vatican halls, pregnant, pleadin' immaculate conception.
And everybody's wrecked on Main Street from drinking unholy blood.
Sticker smiles sweet as Gunner breathes deep, his ankles caked in mud.
And I said, "Hey, gunner man, that's qucksand, that's quicksand, that ain't mud."
"Have you thrown your senses to the war, or did you lose them in the flood?"
That pure American brother, dull-eyed and empty-faced,
Races Sundays in Jersey in a Chevy stock super eight.
He rides 'er low on the hip, on the side he's got "Bound for Glory" in red, white and blue flash paint.
He leans on the hood telling racing stories, the kids call him Jimmy the Saint.
Well, that blaze-and-noise boy, he's gunnin' that bitch loaded to blastin' point.
He rides head first into a hurricane and disappears into a point.
And there's nothin' left but some blood where the body fell, that is, nothin' left that you could sell.
Just junk all across the horizon, a real highwayman's farewell.
And I said, "Hey kid, you think that's oil? Man, that ain't oil, that's blood."
I wonder what he was thinking when he hit that storm, or was he just lost in the flood?
Eighth Avenue sailors in satin shirts whisper in the air.
Some storefront incarnation of Maria, she's puttin' on me the stare.
And Bronx's best apostle stands with his hand on his own hardware.
Everything stops, you hear five quick shots, the cops come up for air.
And now the whiz-bang gang from uptown, they're shootin' up the street.
And that cat from the Bronx starts lettin' loose, but he gets blown right off his feet.
And some kid comes blastin' 'round the corner, but a cop puts him right away.
He lays on the street holding his leg, screaming something in Spanish, still breathing when I walked away.
And somebody said, "Hey man, did you see that? His body hit the street with such a beautiful thud."
I wonder what the dude was sayin', or was he just lost in the flood?
Hey man, did you see that, those poor cats are sure messed up.
I wonder what they were gettin' into, or were they just lost in the flood?

These “Faux quotes” must be recognized and dealt with as part of a larger GOP strategy to “faggotize” John Kerry. Any use of the quotes without being counteracted by highlighting Kerry’s alpha male performance in the debates is just promoting this Republican meme into political discourse. We saw it first with Drudge's $200 haircut stories, and as Bush precedes to get his ass kicked in the upcoming debates, an increasingly desperate GOP will only escalate the Kerry is a bit faggy meme. Besides, we all know Fox is biased, repeating it ad infinitum is like proving 2+2=4. The debatable tactical gain of again proving Fox unfair is hardly worth the strategic disaster of polluting the airways with malicious Republican propaganda.
I will leave it to others to decide whether Josh Marshall is just a naïve moderate stooge or an undercover GOP operator. Kenneth Pollack, the CBS memos, and now the Faux quotes; to me he is too often pushing things the GOP way. Whatever the case, one thing is sure, he took obscure quotes that only the Fox website reading, Bush loving, Neanderthals would have seen, and he put these destructive quotes into the mainstream where they will now influence moderate voters. We are seeing here a slight twist on the case of the fundamentalist preacher who protests a film and ends up helping to promote it, increasing ticket sales with his hysterical condemnations of smut. Marshall didn’t help matters either by needing to call the Kerry campaign to see if the quotes were real, adding to the meme that Kerry is a little limp in the wrist.
Two can play this game; if the ReThugs want to get dirty so can we. I’d say George W. Bush loolked more like Barbara W Bush at the debate. Kerry was clearly the dominant male in the room, even W's wife was drawn by Kerry’s animal magnetic attraction as documented by the picture of Laura Bush and Theresa Heinz Kerry, in their matching white outfits, struggling to stand closest to Kerry. Bush’s grimaces and sighs during the debate can certainly be called less than manly, as is his tendency to tire easily. I mean, come on now, this guy is in his mid-fifties but has the stamina of an eighty-year-old woman. He also sure does seem to come unglued at the slightest criticism, what’s up with that? Weak, fragile, emotionally delicate are all adjectives that fit Bush to a T.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
Liberals need to do a much better job at putting to rest the right-wing mantra that it's not ok to criticize the war because it lowers the morale of the troops. That's simply BS
On the Mclaughlin Group last night, Lawrence McDonnell and John M. tried to smack down both Pat Buchanan and Tony Blimply when they tried to imply, as Bush does constantly, that people who dare to critcize the war are hurting our troops and giving aid and comfort to the enemy. It's simply garbage.
Listen, my husband is a veteran from the first gulf war and I posed this question to him:
Would you rather be in Iraq and hear reports from home that your country is in fantasy land saying that Iraq is going well, they are making progress, while you are getting your ass shot at 20 times a day?
Or would you rather there be a debate in your country about how to do a better job and get you the hell home quicker?
He said, of course the latter.
Now, put yourself in a soilder's boots, you are in Iraq, it's a fucking mess, chaos surrounds you and the news you hear from home is how great things are there. Wouldn't that make you feel hopeless and alone? Wouldn't you wonder what Americans are smoking and why they don't know the true cost of this war? Wouldn't you be pissed that no one, no one was questioning the debacle, no one was even discussing how to fix the mess, and how best to proceed to hopefully prevent you from getting killed or maimed? Wouldn't you feel like a rat at an experimental lab? Wouldn't you feel like a pawn in a political game knowing that nothing will change in Iraq UNTIL after an election and that an election outcome is more important than your life?
IT IS NOT UNPATRIOTIC TO QUESTION OR CRITICIZE A QUAGMIRE! But what is unpatriotic is to pretend that everything is roses while your soldiers die for a mistake.

bush thinks americans are simpletons so he pretends the affairs of the U.S. and the world are simple and therefore offers only simple solutions. we know better - americans are smart enough to know the world is big and complicated. they're smart enough to know applying simple solutions, "HARD WORK" that it is, will not solve complicated problems. perhaps we need a president who is willing to work EVEN HARDER.

FWIW, i'm a huge fan of bright eyes. here's a great quote from one of the best songs on the 2002 albumLIFTED, or, The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground, a song titled "LET'S NOT SHIT OURSELVES (TO LOVE AND BE LOVED)":
My teachers, they built the retaining wall memory, all those multiple choices I answered so quickly. And got my grades back and forgot, just as easily, but at least I got an A. So I don't have them to blame. I should stop pointing fingers: reserve my judgement for all those public action figures, the cowboy president. So loud behind the bullhorn, so proud they can't admit when they have made a mistake.
While poison ink spews from a speechwriter's pen, he knows that he don't have to say it, so it don't bother him. 'Honesty' 'Accuracy' are really just 'Popular Opinion'. And the approval rating is high, so someone is going to die. ABC, NBC, CBS: Bullshit. They give us fact or fiction? I guess an even split. And each new act of war is tonight's entertainment. We are still the pawns in their game. As they take eye for an eye, until no one can see, and we must stumble blindly forward, repeating history. Well I guess that we all fit into your slogan on that fast food marquee: Red-blooded, White-skinned, oh, and the Blues. I got the Blues! I got the Blues! That's me! That's me!
conor oberst is one of the best songwriters of this generation. he wrote that in 2002, well before the war in iraq. did i mention he's from omaha, nebraska?

Barbara Bush was more determined than ever to see her daughter re-marry. She believed that only through mrriage could Doro and her children find their safest haven. To that end Barbara encouraged Doro to date.
"We spent a weekend up at Camp David with the Bushes...They had two dogs up there at the time and the divorced daughter," recalled one congressional wife. "Barbara told me she was concerned because Doro had dated Representative David Dreier for a year and he never touched her...'Never laid a hand on her,' said Barbara...I think Doro had better luck when she started dating a Democrat."

people, i don't want anyone to stop coming here but make sure you have good internet security. lot of mean, dumb ass trolls in here. you don't see 'em, but they are here.
"Good internet security", by which I assume you mean some sort of firewall, will protect you from people who have already targeted you and are trying to break into, disable, or compromise your machine.
The only way you can, by visiting Atrios' comment board, make yourself vulnerable to anyone other than Atrios and Haloscan is to inadvertently (or intentionally) release information about yourself, including an email address and a hyperlink, in your comments.
The email address and home page link may appear to be invisible, but they are not. Haloscan does not, as some services do, preserve your anonymity and serve as a middleman for email; it merely serves up your email address as part of the message so that the recipient can email you if s/he wants to.
The address is obfuscated to make it slightly more difficult for spambots to harvest, but it's readily available to anyone who wants it and knows how to get it. (The easiest way is to click on the Email link, which opens a new message and decodes the obfuscated address, which you can then kill.)
Reasonable caution with your personal information is warranted, but paranoia about 3v1L h@cK3Rz is not.

i think atrios posted the other day that some one was messing with his site. i don't know.
i hate politics, i'm only voting because bush is a war criminal, much is always made of the two parties being the same, but they aren't. democrats have their issues but repugs are in general mean, vicious, my way or the hi way types. they march in lockstep, and that has been the key to their success. look at this campaign. kerry talks of hope and american values. bush and co. pretty much just deride kerry with usually meaningless and petty ridicule. when they do have a good point against him, they exagerate, manipulate, and down right turn it into a lie.
well, i'm voting, because because like i said bush is a war criminal. also, because i believe terrorists really do seek to do grave damage to this country. i don't think play'n politics with terrorist threat is an effective strategy to prevent them from attacking again.
if we're successful and kerry gets in, there are going to be a lot of hearings. i've always enjoyed the hearings.

Republicans just aren't good at war. Can you name one war they have won...?
IRAQ is still ongoing.. While the Democrats have Wilson WWI, FDR WWII, Truman Korea, Clinton Kosovo, Truman dropped the bomb first yet held back in Korea. Johnsons was really a Republican from Texas and was in the Vietnam war holding the line. Lincoln was also previously a Whig and is arguably a Democrat as the support of abolishment of slavery and the Civil War.
Why is anyone voting for Republicans unless you are part of the club cashing in?
Even Clinton brought the free market WTO, NAFTA as it is cept the pharmas and oil held back by Repubicans. CNN/Money remported a study that the markets gain on average 9% more duing D presidencies and are more steady, which investors like.
Environmentally we protect our world and FDR implemented programs that helped make us one of the best countries with the "New Deal". He also took us from 16th strongest military to the #1 military in the world.
Democrats brought civil rights and fnished the job of the Consitution and Bill of Rights. They make our world safer with groups like consumer groups that have put seatbelts in our cars, safety checks and accountablilty for those with power.

This the first thing I saw in the letters to the editor in the Dallas Morning News:
Re: "Great Debate – Bush wins by not losing," Friday Editorial.
"Bush wins by not losing?" Is this what America wants or needs: a pass/fail presidency?
John Kerry was specific and concrete with facts and figures, to which George Bush's only answer was: "Well, it's hard work." Mr. Kerry made it clear that he's a straight-talking man concerned with our security. He made it clear that he understands the implications of strategic foreign policy in ways that George Bush does not now and never will.
And the best The Dallas Morning News can do is surrender to the soft bigotry of lowered expectations. The president won the debate by not losing? I certainly don't feel safe having a president whose only success is avoiding utter failure.
Internet security and trolls: anyone making sarcastic comments about Bush-Cheney had better have a good fire wall. I learned the hard way. Not just here but anywhere on the net.

When I am unable to connect to a particular thread, I get what appears to be a Blogger error page, which I have up to this point assumed to be authentic.
I admit that I have not looked at the RSS to see whether that is actually the case. It would be theoretically possible to publish a spoof RSS feed that could redirect threads to some hostile server harvesting information on Eschaton readers; so it might pay to make sure your RSS feed is authentic.
Even if somebody reaps my IP number, though, I don't trust software firewalls (and I recommend that you don't either); all of my machines here are behind a Linksys router. If you want to crack them, you need to be out in the woods within fifty feet or so of the house, in which case I wish you the best of luck with my Republican neighbors and their firearms.

seattlebird, Deanna Holmes -
I still am at a loss to understand why EP imagines that poll watching to combat voter intimidation is valuable within Arizona. As a state, we are receiving attention from the foreign election observers - because of the statewide public funding of elections and because of the Clean Elections process which has been ongoing here for some years. Not for vote fraud however. We are using OCR machines and those machines, as you know, retain the paper ballot.
Further, from the EP website, they seem to have decided that both Phoenix and Tucson - which contain roughly 80% of the statewide vote - need to be monitored. But, since EP seems to be sending out monitors according to that same list being used by the foreign election observers ("The election monitors, invited by the San Francisco activist group "Global Exchange," will be deployed in five states watching for evidence of "disenfranchisement."
The five states include Florida, Ohio, Arizona, Missouri and Georgia, according to Global Exchange. Florida was selected due to the controversy that erupted there in the 2000 elections; Georgia because it is one of only two states where voters will use only touch-screen voting machines. Arizona was picked because elections there are publicly financed, while Missouri was the scene of widespread reports of Republican efforts to suppress the black vote in 2000. Ohio was also of interest because it is expected to be one of the most hotly contested battleground states in this year's election. World Net Daily 20 Sept 04), and not bothering with say, California or Texas or South Dakota where there is strong and recent vote suppression, this concentration on Arizona just baffles me.
I mean, welcome to Arizona and all that, but....?

Karin - that's kind of my point tho. AZ used to fix votes quite regularly - William Rehnquist was kind of the poster boy. But we haven't done in years - and no, all elections are not publicly financed in the same way as those in AZ are - it's a singular process that is being attacked by the right wing hardliners. But there is simply no reason I can figure out as to why EP would think sending in observers to prevent something that happens so seldom is a swell idea. And not, say to South Dakota where the Native American population was well and truly targetted, or into South Texas where there are serious problems. Still. What may be involved is the presence of a ballot initiative concerning illegals voting - but again, that's not illegal voting, but undocumented residents....
So, since I cannot get an answer out of EP about this, I'm curious as to whether anybody has an explanation as to why the resources would be directed to AZ? Other than for the nice weather we're having.

GWPDA--I live here, in Mesa.
Apparently there have been problems in the past, particularly in heavily Hispanic precincts, with election officials turning people away for not having (for example) a picture ID when one is not required. (At least right now, I think that changes if the PAN initiative passes .) The precincts EP are going to cover have a history of voter intimidation. I was a bit disappointed that EP wasn't going to be working in areas like West Mesa, which is now so Spanish-speaking that the latest Target to be built has completely bilingual signage. *But* it's Mesa, and the political power base here is overwhelmingly white, Republican and conservative. However, EP will have a toll-free number, a bunch of attorneys, and people can call in to report problems in those areas.
Hispanic voter intimidation goes back a long ways. Remember, William Rehnquist was involved in voter intimidation in South Phoenix in the early 1960s. (To our shame, this man is the chief justice of the Supreme Court, instead of toiling in obscurity somewhere.) There's so much prejudice in some Anglo circles towards Hispanic participation in the electoral process (hell, what am I saying, *just living here* to wit, the PAN initiative), the use of Spanish-language ballots and so on that I think there is a need for observers.

Dionne in today's WaPo:
Bush fares very badly when he is forcefully challenged. It makes you worry about his strength in circumstances he does not completely control. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the president has received a remarkably free ride. He rarely faces the media. He speaks only to partisan crowds; critics risk arrest if they show up. There is little evidence that Bush is challenged by his staff or his Cabinet. He is most comfortable when he sticks to talking points.
But suddenly, when Bush was confronted for 90 minutes by an opponent willing to go straight at him, he fumbled, he hesitated and he scowled. The Bush Scowl is destined take its place with the Gore Sigh and the Dean Scream.
The Bush forces will no doubt try to find some way to spin this debate into a Bush victory. I could be wrong but, honestly, I think that may be beyond the talents of even Karl Rove. That's why Democrats, finally, are smiling.
I think in a year or two when people talk about this debate, what they'll say is that, if you'd turned the sound off, or if you didn't know who was the president, you'd have picked Kerry as the president. He looked more presidential.
We've still got the Sunday talk shows, but I agree with whoever it was yesterday who said that the spin cycle is shorter today than it was in 2000 and Kerry has won this debate and the debate spin cycle.
I'm not quite as sanguine, BTW, about the VP debate as others are. Cross examining a witness is a different skill from debating an opponent and Cheny is evil, but not stupid. Gwen is not, IMHO, as fair and nonpartisan as Jim Lehrer was. Edwards needs to come off as serious and mature, willing to use force if necessary.

To each his own, I suppose.
I consider Bruce to be the Dylan of my generation. No one else has (except maybe Bono)addressed the issues of life (in my timeframe anyway) as clearly.
As far as the stage show - Wow - next time you leave early can I have your seat ? I've been to the Center maybe twenty time for concerts and it has NEVER rocked like it did last night. Even in the Bruce shows a few years ago. And Bruce doesn't really have a stage persona. I've been paying to see him since about 74 and thats just Bruce.

Cheney does not look like a nice person, I don't care how anyone tries to spin it. And Edwards has that folksy thing down pat. People love that (witness Dubya, although his is phony). All Edwards has to keep saying is Haliburton, Haliburton, Enron, Haliburton, Enron, ..and he wins. Cheney can't spin that stuff no matter how hard he tries.

Apparently Repugs think that advising people of their rights is a form of voter fraud.

Of all the excuses given for Bush's terrible, but honest, debate performance, it seems that the "consoling hurricane victims" excuse is going to be a major crutch for BC 04 spinners. Here are three little words to take that spin and flush it down where it belongs: "biking and fishing". Although Bush was in Florida Wednesday afternoon with the victims, he was "biking and fishing" that morning in Crawford. In fact, the Bush Campaign seemed to really go out of it's way to announce that Bush was to be "biking and fishing" that morning. I guess that they felt that this emphasis would either convey confidence that Bush was completely ready for the debate (in fact, Press secretary Scott McClellan said Bush was ready for Thursday night's debate with Kerry. "He's looking forward to it," McClellan said), or that Bush was just a regular guy, or both. Well, here's a headline: "Typical "C" student goes biking and fishing instead of prepping for final exams, and fails." Do you really want someone for President who goes biking and fishing instead of concentrating on important matters of the State (Aug 6 PDB), even if it is "hard, hard work"? Hasn't this President had enough vacation time (more than any other) in the last four years? Also, when will they stop exploiting innocent victims for their own corrupt political gains? When will you make them stop? November 2nd, I hope.

Lap up praise from owners.
Rub head indiscriminately upon keyboard, hitting "send" almost by accident.
Roll on floor, hoping to look adorable enough to score treats.
"I was perusing Google news and saw the title, "Bush wins debate with Kerry," from the San Francisco Chronicle at the top of the page."
Maybe the Chronicle scewed up and picked up their story from The Onion.

Lehrer and Ifill have Republican bias
On Friday nights I have a three-hour drive home through the mid-South; yesterday I was forced to stoop to listening to Michael Savage and Bukkake Boy to keep myself awake.
Savage really tore Lehrer a new asshole, asserting the exact opposite.
I've come to not really take all these media bias charges too seriously. What the media are mostly biased in favor of is not working very hard, and let's just face it; the GOP is better at feeding them talking points than we are.

Morning all - Hee hee! The letter I wrote to the Dallas Morning News yesterday about their editorial that said Bush won the debate by not losing got published this morning. And it was the first letter on the page!
The News also had a story that said they got over 500 letters for Kerry, most of which had been mailed en masse as part of a planned Democratic mailing after debates.
I couldn't be happier about being organized and starting to lean on the media systematically to get ourselves heard.

The stones have been stagnant (and perhaps pickled) since the middle 80's.
Borrowing a phrase from Greg Lake, "you just couldn't be more wrong". I first caught the Stones in '75. I saw them twice on their 97 tour and they were the best I'd ever seen them. Those two concerts were two of the best I had ever seen. The Bridges to Babylon album was good also, as was Voodoo Lounge.
Sorry but the boys ain't anything close to stagnant.

"Hispanic voter intimidation goes back a long ways. Remember, William Rehnquist was involved in voter intimidation in South Phoenix in the early 1960s.... There's so much prejudice in some Anglo circles towards Hispanic participation in the electoral process ...and so on that I think there is a need for observers."
Deanna, Rehnquist was involved in the vote suppression of 1960, 1962, 1964.... I live in Phoenix. I'm not now seeing anything like the kind of suppression that's being suggested, and haven't done in thirty years. The reason I haven't seen it is because of massive efforts which have taken place in AZ to prevent and stop it. Thus "Clean Elections" and the use of county-hired elections workers, rather than party members. The fact that there's a California imported ballot measure up for grabs is hardly evidence of state-sponsored intimidation or suppression - any more than would be a group of Protest Warriors turning up, or indeed the great Mormon pressure groups which do indeed attempt to enforce ballot discipline out in Mesa.
Thus, my puzzlement - the fact that forty years ago Arizona fell victim to rightwing pollwatchers seems to be stretching it a lot - while not monitoring South Dakota where there was apparent state-endorsed exclusion of Native Americans. Indeed, it's going to be interesting to see how the EP monitors Maricopa County - the Recorder reminds us that they will be enforcing

The only exception is for kids voting and necessary activities by the property owner. No news media or exit polling or checkers within the 75-foot limit. In addition, electioneering is prohibited within 75 feet of the polls from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm on election

Bush blaming his poor debate performance on being emotionally upset about hurricane victims is another reason this man should not be president.
A president needs to be extraordinarily emtionally mature, with the ability to compartmentalize. Tragedies occur across this country every day - police officers, doctors, nurses and EMT workers deal with trauma as a matter of course and it doesn't seem to affect their ability to carry out their professional responsibilities.
It's not as if Bush were there during the hurricane - it's not as if he actually experienced the destruction first-hand. Bush is clearly not up to the job if he is knocked off his game so easily just by simply meeting with natural disaster vicitms.

Congratulations to Tena!
Too bad we can't get organized and get news like this out (from Juan Cole):
I have it from insiders that in April, 2003, Jay Garner let it slip to some of his staff that his charge was to turn Iraq over to Ahmad Chalabi within six months. The staffers were shocked and some contacted the State Department to see if this was known there. It was not. So they blew the whistle on Bush with Colin Powell. I was told that Powell then made a coalition with Tony Blair and that the two of them went to Bush and got him to change his mind.
The plan to put Chalabi in charge of Iraq was frankly idiotic. Chalabi had no grass roots. He was the one who had the bright idea to throw thousands of ex-Baathists into unemployment (which encouraged them to join the guerrilla resistance). It later came out that some of the Neoconservatives in the Pentagon had let it slip to him that the US had broken the Iranian diplomatic codes. Chalabi is chummy with Tehran and let his friends among the Ayatollahs know this tidbit. As a result, the US can no longer closely track the Iranian nuclear program.
But neither, of course, are we prosecuting Chalabi on that. Or chasing down the leak. Too busy being "steadfast" and "working hard," I guess. Back to Juan:
This is the man to whom Bush-- and I underline Bush-- was planning originally just to hand Iraq over. An Iranian asset. This was why, as Kerry noted on Thursday night, Bush had done no real planning for the period after the war. He thought he had everything sewn up because Chalabi would handle it.
Of course, it doesn't fit in a soundbite. And the "mainstream media" would go out of it's way to say Kerry wasn't very stylish in the way he discussed this, or some such. But can we just take Bush's performance Thursday as the concrete proof of complete incompetence? Maybe if we relied on the "right wing media," we could.
Salon notes that the "right wing media" said Bush got slammed Thursday night, while the "mainstream media" was falling all over itself to say it "wasn't that bad." Fair and balanced, ya know.

Borrowing a phrase from Greg Lake, "you just couldn't be more wrong".
I'll try to get over my revulsion for Greg Lake long enough to agree.
To recap the argument:
"how can anyone call Springsteen a FORMER biggest star when he can fill a stadium?"
"The Stones probably have the best claim to the title of "biggest stars", objectively speaking, if that's your criterion."
"I don't like the Stones. Besides, they're not doing anything any more."
"The Stones still fill stadiums around the world, wherever they go. They're working on a new album and another tour."
"I don't like the Stones."
Whatever. I'm not dissing Springsteen, but the Rolling Stones were billed as the "World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band" for years before Springsteen released his first album. They're still touring and still recording today.
And Keith Richards has learned how to tune his guitar.

I am incredibly envious.
To the point. With sll the debate hubbub, I've not noticed any comment on this one -
The despicable "Bible Banned/Gay Engagement Approved" pamphlet that the rethugs first floated in Arkansas is now being widely distributed by the RNC in West Virginia.
Bob Byrd took his outrage to the senate floor and called for an apology. (Not nice to piss off the old guy.) The RNC's official comment was, "It was an issue that was already out there. It was obviously on the minds of voters.''
Is anyone else inclined to ask the RNC exactly who put bible banning "out there" into anyone's mind?

Don't worry...men without souls don't feel pain. They're like the un-dead. All they want to to feel a tastet of the life force which escapes them.
Don't pity the beast...just stab it through it's little tiny black heart.

I'm posting this here because I want to clue the Kerry campaign into a fact they seem to be unaware of.
BUSH DID NOT CUT TAXES! HE POSTPONED TAXES WITH LOANS.
25% of federal spending is now financed by borrowing money.
THE LOANS PLUS INTEREST MUST BE PAID BACK WITH 'TAX' MONEY
It's a nice scam. Give money to the wealthy, then borrow it back from them. Leave it to the middle class suckers to pick up the bill
THIS IS LIKE PICKING UP THE TAB AT DINNER BY PAYING FOR IT WITH YOUR GUEST'S CREDIT CARD

Hey, I went to see Patti Smith here in (divine) Providence last night, and SHE played "Because the Night" and finished with "The People have the Power". It's a librul conspiracy, alert Faux News!

Patricia Wilson @ Reuters prefaces
Kerry's comments today this way:
A Boston millionaire who has served in the U.S. Senate for two decades, Kerry said he shared the middle class's "frustration that this administration seems to be in a constant state of denial that neglects the needs of these Americans."
....
He portrayed Bush, a fellow Yale graduate with a similar privileged upbringing, as unable to empathize with the middle class and a man who could neither see nor fix the country's economic problems.

He cut taxes (actually, Congress cut taxes, but they magnanimously give him the credit).
He happened to do it in a year in which the federal government ran a deficit, which means that it borrowed money, net.
This was fairly standard practice before 1998. The last year prior to that in which the federal government broke even was 1969, when the government ran a surplus of $3 billion.
Go read Keynes' General Theory.

If anybody's interested, here's a link
to a piece I did about (among other
things) my first Bruce show in 1973.
Be sure to scroll down a bit...
Don't like Bruce *or* REM? One wonders why Alterman chose to hang out at your house for the debate. Does the good Dr. know of your Bruce ambivalence?

Aha. So that's why Eric Alterman was visiting Atrios in Philadelphia.

Cheney's very quick and smart when he's not telling people to go fuck themselves.
Ha. He's more clever than Shrub, but he just barely held his own with Joe Loserman, who kissed his ass and let him get away with that self-made man whopper. Edwards has a lot to prove and Cheney has felt entitled for so long that I don't think he'll be up to the task.
More to the point, Cheney has absolutely nothing to recommend him. His congressional record is beyond a joke, and his few significant votes are embarrassments to him that he understandably wishes everyone would forget. The past four years have been a disaster. And on 9/11 he cowered in the bunker with Condi while Clarke ran the anti-terror folks, then afterwards he had to punt to Powell because he had not clue one on how to handle the Taliban.
I have my doubts about Edwards, but at best he can hold his own with Cheney. It will be easy to rattle his cage, no matter how much Ambien Colin slips him in advance.
