I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarLink doesn't work.

GravatarAtrios, you are putting in some OT today............to bad you are "management" and won't get any extra.

GravatarDo you suppose most Pennsylvanians realize Specter originated the "single bullet" theory for the JFK shooting? How this nut remains in office is a mystery.

GravatarMatt, as a Pennsylvanian, I am well aware of Specter's role in the single bullet theory, his skewering of Anita Hill, etc. I am as equally amazed that this guy manages to get re-elected.

GravatarIs he going to win?

GravatarGreat! Thanks, will watch via PCN, home of full coverage of the PA Farm Show! (Tip: For nail-biting suspense, watch the "Sheep To Shawl" contest.)

VOTE HOEFFEL!

GravatarDAILYBLURB.BLOGSPOT.COM

GravatarArlen disgusted me with the Clarence Thomas debacle. I will never forget the arrogance of his questioning towards Anita Hill. He plays to both Dems and Repubs in this state, I wonder when the dems will wake up and stop voting for this creep.

GravatarNo Imag

Which part of the state are you from?

Gravatarmeme, grew up in the Media area. Graduated from Penncrest. Are you also from Pennsyltucky?

I agree with you, Specter somehow appeals to both parties. He really infuriated me when he questioned Anita Hill- proved that he was a chauvinist prick.

GravatarI am in the Northeast-Pocono region.
Are you getting blasted with anti-Kerry ads as we are?

GravatarHe is a "traditional" senator in that he brings loads of money to his constituents, and often good stuff not just pork. That's his appeal.

He has to go.

GravatarCompletely OT- Mt St. Helens raised to level 3. Evacuating areas. Fresh magma maybe released.

GravatarHe also defended Clinton during Monicagate, pro-choice, etc. The guy's not a demon.

GravatarThat's not to say I don't want Hoeffel to stomp him.

Gravatar//How this nut remains in office is a mystery.//

1. Specter's Jewish background snookers a lot of "A-Jew-can't-be-that-bad" progressives in the Philadelphia suburbs.

2. He fronts as a social liberal (pro-choice, etc.) and fiscal conservative, which appeals to some of the wealthy progressive types in (say it again) the Philadelphia 'burbs. But he almost always votes for the most ridiculous Repuglican a-hole judges that Bush appoints, and has virtually rubber-stamped the Bush agenda. He says one thing, and does another. A flip. And a flop.

3. The hairplugs are pretty hot.

4. Lots of PA progressives see Santorum as the real foe, and are saving their ammo for 2006, when Man-on-Dog is up for re-election. When in reality, Specter's duplicity and seniority probably do more damage overall. They're both rotten and both need to be taken down.

5. BUT this time there is a far-right candidate from the Constitution Party running in the race (www.jimclymer.com). Might he siphon away enough votes from the realllllllly right-wing crowd in Central PA? Keep in mind that Specter won his primary this spring by less than 1% against crazed fanatic Pat Toomey.

VOTE FOR JOE HOEFFEL!!!!!

Gravatarmeme, we are being bombarded with ads from both campaigns.

GravatarAll of Specter's clout lands Specter and PA as 27th of the 50 states in Adjusted Federal Expenditures Per Dollar of Taxes by State. Feh.

http://www.taxfoundation.org/ff/ ...dingupdate.html

GravatarAlot of repubs don't like Arlen. Toomey made the race close. Hoeffel would have had an easier time with Toomey because of his anti-abortion views.

Gravatareinhorn is finkle...
finkle is einhorn...

GravatarVery disturbing to see advocate for the homeless Sr. Mary Scullion shilling for Specter on teevee. Why oh why??? I live in Jersey now so I don't have a dog in this race anymore but I sure would love to see Hoeffel knock Specter on his arrogant ass.

GravatarNo imag

During the debates all the ads were anti-Kerry and it was pissing me off.
CBS had no anti-Bush ads, I have to tune into the cable stations to see Anti-Bush ads.

GravatarOkay, does anyone know why I'm having such a helluva time getting Eschaton to load and what I can do to make it work properly. I'm starting to talk to myself, here, and it's irritating cause half the time I already know what I'm gonna say.

GravatarFrom the Inquirer letters section:

As donors to Project Home and as believers in the responsibility of government to care for the poor and powerless, we were appalled to see Sister Mary Scullion starring in a TV commercial for Sen. Arlen Specter.

Specter is no liberal. He's not even a moderate. He's voted with President Bush on 89 percent of Senate legislation. He's got a 25 percent voting record as rated by Americans for Democratic Action. He voted for the Bush tax cuts for the rich that will starve government of the revenues it needs for affordable housing, health care for the uninsured, and education reform - all causes Sister Mary has so eloquently championed.

Sister Mary has sold her soul, and that of an enormously worthy organization.

GravatarNo problem with the link.

Gravatarmeme, bummer about that. You'd think they'd both be buying the time. I can't remember seeing ads during the debate, but then again, we were too elated to watch any.

Gravatarmonica_nyc, I was just thinking of saying that.

GravatarBackslider - I frequently clear my cache now, that helps a lot. Also, try putting the www in the path.

GravatarI'm voting for GW Bush because he is the right man for the job.

GravatarAnd then Einhorn hired Specter as his attorney; Specter asked for only $5000 in bail despite the fact that this rotting corpse had been in this guy's apartment for years, and said the guy would be no flight risk.

Bail granted. Einhorn puts up $4000, and disappears for the next 20+ years.

GravatarCan anyone tell me what causes my name to be Anonymous/default no matter what I do. I cleared my cookies a few days ago and the handle won't stay after I post with a name. I've been reading this blog for a long time and I've never had this happen before.

ha ha Jenny, it probably started stinking long before 20 years. From what I recall from news accounts when they captured him, they searched his home and found the body in a traveling trunk shortly after his dissappeared.

I don't know what it is. I cleared my cache - I think; cleared out the cookies, anyway - and it's not as bad as it was the past few days. This is the first day it didn't take hours to load. Course, now for some reason, my handle won't stay put, so who the hell knows.

GravatarShould be Kerry/Edwards 49% and Bush/Cheney 46%. I'll get it right yet.

Gravatarchris/tx
>my handle won't stay put, so who the hell knows.<

I think it's this site that has changed because, my settings are the same as always.

GravatarDoes anyone know where I can get wire frames so I can put out my Kerry/Edwards

10leggedshadow

Any home store like Home Depot or Lowes carries them for people who sell their own houses. Also your local hardware store probably stocks them.

GravatarBush Cheney signs are the ones that seem really, really shaky now.

Gravatar10leggedshadow, try contacting your local Democratic party for frames. Ours will come and set the signs up in your yard for you.

Gravataranon and Backslider -
Re handle won't stay put - Since it is a cookie, somewhat baffled assuming your settings allow the saving of cookies. All you need to do is go look at your cookies, find the one for Atrios, view it and it should have your handle.

Re loading - That will have a lot to do with your cache and your settings on whether to look for a newer page each time you open this site. You are correct in that for some reason refresh or opening this site sometimes does not bring up the latest post (it see's what is in cache as the same as what is current). An easy backdoor to this is have two Atrios favorites with the second being http://www.atrios.blogspot.com.

Anyway, try playing with (assuming you are using IE):

Tools/Internet Options/General Tab/Delete files/Click on the "Delete all offline content"/OK. Then click on "Settings", "View Files", and all you should see are cookies. Then click the "Security" tab, go to "Custom Level", and make sure it is set to medium or lower (not high). There is also somewhere in there where you can tell it to prompt you when a site is installing a cookie to your browser. Anyway, that has helped me... (my two cents).

GravatarThank you, no imag

Gravatar10leggedshadow, you're welcome. I forgot to mention that our local Dems give the lawn signs out for free. Hopefully, yours will too- maybe you should ask for one in case yours gets stolen.

GravatarMassive Voter Registration Fraud Probed in Florida
The U.S. Justice Department and Florida state police are investigating widespread allegations of criminal vote fraud in Florida, reports Florida Today. (Scroll down for reports today from Wisconsin, Michigan and Colorado.)

Allegations range from phony voter registrations to forged party-affiliation change cards and absentee ballots. "Several law enforcement investigations are under way," wrote Elections Division Director Dawn Roberts in a Friday memo to election supervisors. Agency spokeswoman Alia Faraj said the Justice Department has agreed to review the allegations of vote fraud in Florida. She could not further discuss the active state and federal investigations.

A field director for one of the many national partisan organizations trying to drum up votes in Florida admits to routine efforts to rig the outcome. They include submitting thousands of invalid voter registration cards, as well as failing to turn in boxes of cards filled out to register Republicans.

"There was a lot of fraud committed," said Mac Stuart, former Miami-Dade field director for ACORN. Among his allegations - that ACORN "quality control" workers routinely kicked back Republican voter registrations while paying for Democratic ones. "They said they had enough," he said.

Stuart said he has been interviewed twice by an agent for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. That FDLE agent declined Friday to confirm his investigation. Florida law makes it a third-degree felony to interfere with someone's right to register as well as to pay a per-card solicitation fee for gathering registrations. Stuart says ACORN did both.

Stuart said ACORN officials at state headquarters in Tampa were aware of what was going on, and discouraged him from talking about it. He said he was ultimately fired as "a loose cannon."

While Republican registrations were ignored, Stuart said those of convicted felons were eagerly sought, even though by law they are ineligible until they are granted clemency by the state. Stuart set up registration tables outside the Miami police department and Dade County jail.

"We targeted them because ACORN had a goal: 103,000 new registrations from Dade County," Stuart said.

ACORN is a liberal partisan organization and Dade County is heavily Democratic. [Hat tip: Stuart Buck]

Gravatarthe liberal avenger

Yes, Ira "Unicorn" Einhorn brutally murdered his girlfriend Holly Maddux, and left behind a trail of hideous evidence. His attorney, Arlen Specter, managed to get him released on a $4,000 cash bond so that the killer could travel Europe for a few years.

It was a hell of a way for Specter to pretend to be a liberal. It's the kind of thing that gives us a bad name. You don't think that might have been on purpose?

Matt at 4:14pm

You made me choke on a tuna sandwich. Crap. I thought I might be the only person in the country who remembered that Specter was the single magic bullet theory guy. I just did some googling and realized that I've never been alone with my recollection.

I'm not all Oliver Stone-ish here. I just think that particular theory is probably one of the single dumbest and most destructive lies ever foisted on the American people. You have to wonder about the guy who thought it up.

Then there were the Clarence Thomas hearings. Thirteen years and I'm still pissed. Specter certainly distinguished himself amongst hypocrites on that one. It was clear then that Specter didn't really want Thomas on the court but he still went out of his way to destroy Hill. I've gagged every time I've heard him since saying how "disappointed" he is in Thomas. No shit, Arlen.

To someone upthread who mentioned how Specter defended Clinton during impeachment, point granted with reservation.

However, let us also remember that Specter, if not the inventor of, was a main promoter of the "wag the dog" charges that hounded Clinton and, in hindsight, probably contributed to OBL's continued life in Afghanistan. Thanks again, Arlen.

Years ago, I spent weeks at a time in PA and got to know the politics and some players there. I have a few good friends there. Other than that, I've no dog in this hunt but I sent money to Hoeffel some time ago.

I'd love to have Specter gone. I don't understand why he holds any elective office at all.

Strikes me as really odd that Specter can manage to be hated almost equally by the left and the right and still get elected. I dislike Specter so much that I was rooting for Toomey in the primary and not only because I thought Toomey would be easier to beat in the general election.

GravatarCheck out the RNC video:

RNC Video

The bits with Giuliani are a riot.

GravatarKay -

I believe it's a one issue thing with Specter. Abortion rights. That and the fact that he's a long-time incumbent and, like others have mentioned, he gets the pork for the state.

I don't like one-issue voters on either side, frankly. It gets us people like Specter...
*

GravatarHow many anti-choice judges does Specter have to confirm (plus voting for the partial birth ban) until people start realizing he's only "pro-choice" as a rhetorical claim and not in action?

Also, as someone posted above, PA does not get pork like other states do.

GravatarLiberal Avenger -

Oh my God! That video is hysterical... "RNC Lite". Great stuff. Thanks for the link.

Re handle won't stay put - try pissing on the heat sink in your CPU. You might want to turn the fans off first, they can cut your "johnson" and blow urine back in your face. If that doesn't work, try smearing feces into all the open ports and drives. Let me know if that doesn't work.

GravatarOT: New Newsweek poll says that Bush's lead has all but vanished..

In the first national telephone poll using a fresh sample, NEWSWEEK found the race now statistically tied among all registered voters, 47 percent of whom say they would vote for Kerry and 45 percent for George W. Bush in a three-way race.

Removing Independent candidate Ralph Nader, who draws 2 percent of the vote, widens the Kerry-Edwards lead to three points with 49 percent of the vote versus the incumbent’s 46 percent.

GravatarDrudge is headlining a Newsweek poll purporting to show that President Bush's lead has completely disappeared in the wake of the drubbing he ostensibly took from John Kerry Thursday night. We knew this was coming; the media story line for the next 30 days is Kerry's comeback, which has the effect of wiping the slate clean and avoiding discussion of how he got behind in the first place.

Is the comeback real? Rasmussen shows the President continuing to enjoy a three-point lead. Among his respondents, 6% say they changed their vote as a result of the debate--3% now voting for Kerry, 2% for Bush, and one percent now undecided.

The Democrats' strategy is to dominate the mainstream media with headlines about Kerry's big win and consequent comeback in the polls; they will portray momentum as being all on their side, with Kerry's many campaign blunders forgotten. This will probably work to some degree. There will be a ripple effect as people read and talk about the debate, and read about Kerry's comeback in the press. This will also set the stage for the next debate, in which the press will portray Bush as on the defensive, and maybe (depending on poll numbers yet to come) on the brink of collapse.

GravatarHave a good Saturday night. I 've been boozing here in London for a while. Do you think Bullet Tooth Tony knew this was going to happen? Hospital visit was very well planned. Maybe he was on the mike to Bush.

GravatarAutopiloted fisherman trying to destroy the threads.

They are worried and they're way in over their heads.

GravatarJim Clymer is the jam!

GravatarFrom polling done for PA Victory 04...

Even those who favor Kerry are OK with Specter, since he is at least somewhat sane. How do we combat this 'bigotry of low expectations' as far as Rethugs are concerned? Isn't it far better to have a real Democrat instead of a GOP toady?

GravatarI loved seeing Arlen get pissed, because Hoeffel helped put the far right candidate Clymer on the ballot.

GravatarI enjoyed the debates, but that Liberatarian was disturbing.

GravatarYeah, that's Specter's idea of a dirty trick. Allowing a candidate with legitimate signatures onto the ballot.

I think Joe won this one fair and square.

GravatarWow, Hoeffel was solid! Specter had a bit of whatever has been ailing Bush. I'd been on the fence whether to give to Hoeffel or save it for Kerry, but I think Hoeffel gets it!

GravatarAutopiloted fisherman trying to destroy the threads.

They are worried and they're way in over their heads.

GravatarI think we are going to see several incumbent republicans go down in this election. Riding the chimperor's coattails is going to have a downside.

Getting the Senate back is going to be incredible! Even deeply red states, like Indiana, there are going to be a record number of democrats elected.

People are sick of this crap!

GravatarArlen defended his client -- Einhorn's flight from justice is not Specter's fault. The fact is, being in jail before conviction is something a lawyer should try to prevent, and he did. Focus on Specter's Senate record (Anita Hill, voting for Bush's entire agenda) but don't confuse his past clients with his personal views / ethics. Many lawyers would represent Hamdi, Padilla, even bin Laden if hired. THis doesn't mean he condones anything or is ultimately responsible. if there were something there, the bar ass'n would indict him and he could be criminally prosecuted. Absent that, don't go for cheap shots. You're better than that.

Gravatarhere's my new strategy for Big John - WWCWD: What would Christopher Walken Do? for the next round of debate rebuttals:

-Next post debate spin: "You tell the angels in heaven you've never seen evil so singularly personified than in the face of the man who killed you."
-Next time Dubya says flipflop: "I'm the anti-christ, and you got me in a vendetta kinda mood."
-When Dubya asks for extra time and gets the deer in the headlights look: "Guys, if I don't bleed to death pretty soon, I'm gonna die of boredom."
-The next time Dubya mentions 'hard work': "Buckwheats, Jimmy."
-Rebuttal to the Libural charge: "I'm an angel. I kill newborns while their mamas watch. I turn cities into salt. And occasionally, when I feel like it, I tear little girls apart. And from now till kingdom come... the only thing you can count
on... in your existence... is never understanding why."
-About his long senatorial relationship with McCain: "Five long years, he wore this watch up his ass. Then when he died of dysentery, he gave me the watch. I hid this uncomfortable piece of metal up my ass for two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, little man, I give the watch to you."
-Comparison between Laura and Teresa: "Women. Nothing surprises me Chip, except your late mother. Who'da thought she had a brain to damage. Bottom line, she tries to blackmail me, I'll drop her out a higher window. Meantime, I got better fish to fry."
-On the field conditions in Iraq: "Tell me, Dubya, if a piss drunk sergeant has a loaded .45 pointed at the head of a piece of dung that the piss drunk sergeant hates and despises, how would you describe the situation?"

GravatarHere's a link for the scoop on Einhorn.

GravatarEinhorn references. Wow. That sort of language is a clear sign that Atrios is becoming a true Philadelphian. Once that happens you can run and you can hide but but that certain special brand of funk is stuck in your blood 'till the day you die.

With regards to the pork that Specter brings home...given his seniority, it's pathetic. He should really be ashamed. It can be tempting to vote for a local candidate who has seniority, even if you disagree with him and his party's platform, if you think he can provide some tangible benefit to your state or region. Specter is not that guy. He has a proven track record of not delivering. Don't even entertain the thought. Vote you conscience. Vote Joe.

GravatarSome of the Unions have endorsed Spector. Go figure.

GravatarNo, you know he's a real Philadelphian when he recognizes that Fairmount Park and Fairmount Avenue are antiphones.
