The problem with Bush in a nutshell:
The final question was illuminating. A voter asked him for three specific examples of mistakes he had made, and what he had done to correct them.
Couldn't do it.
Couldn't admit to a single mistake. Chose instead to say how smart he was in Iraq. Yeah, I can see his smarts, all over my TV.
The man cannot admit to a mistake. A strong leader stays the course when things begin to look bad, but he can see we just need to stick through the tough times.
But it's a fine line between firmness and obstinance. And we crossed that line months ago. He screwed up drastically, in Iraq, and he still can't see it.
Only a fool refuses to face his mistakes and continues digging himself in deeper.
And Bush can't seem to see anything.

Some thoughts abuot "global test" and coalitions and UN and whatnot...
Bush, of course, is trying to characterize Kerry as one who will kowtow to foreign powers instead of placing American interests first. Remember, however, from the movie The Straight Story, where a story was related as to how it is easy to break a stick, but impossible to break a bundle, thus illustrating the strength of having partners stand with you. THAT's what Kerry is referring to when he talks about coalitions, not deferring to foreign heads of state. Of course, you all know this already, but we need to spread this idea far and wide amongst the voters who still see Kerry as weak on defending America.

Democratic spin operatives need to be using the A word - A for angry. Bush wasn't aggressive, he wasn't assertive, he was downright angry. He was losing it. If the media ran with Howard Dean's "Woop," how are they going to deal with the vitriolic tone used by Bush. So far I have heard aggressive, came out swinging, etc. The spin has got to be his anger - it was staggering.

Dear Patriots for the President,
It's time to rally again. Tonight, John Kerry and George Bush will face
off in the second presidential debate. Once again, we need you to take
action the moment they leave the stage.
There are four critical things you can do to help beat the Democrat spin
machine.
Forward this email to family, coworkers, and friends.
Vote in online polls.
Write a letter to the editor.
Call radio and television stations.
Your activism following the debates has made the difference -- and it
will again tonight.
Vote in Online Polls
National and local news organizations will be conducting online polls
during and after the debate asking for readers' opinions. Look for
online polls at these news websites, and make sure to vote in every one
of them:

Intangibles: For a "town hall" meeting, the goal of each to connect with the people seemed diffused and delayed until after the debate. But as fight ends, Bush moves into crowd for pictures and handshakes. Kerry goes to Gibson, then wife, and finally into crowd. Early advantage in post-fight group hug might put more pictures of President with citizens in tomorrow's papers. Five points awarded to Bush. Kerry penalized five points for yielding the photo-op playing field.
Overall, Bush clearly rebounded from his Miami performance, and wiped out that part of the criticism that labeled him indecisive and stumbling. Five points awarded to Bush.
But, like Dick Cheney on Tuesday, President Bush left himself open for a second-day story, a minor wound if he really does have an $84 stake in a timber company. More points could be awarded or subtracted from either fighter depending on the fact-check. And you don't want to mention either Dred Scott and slavery, or the prospects of a depression.
Kerry's performance seemed unaffected by the change of format: even-tempered, clear, rarely stumbling, but also missing several opportunities to bloody his opponent. One overall point awarded to Kerry for overall impact, based mostly on the staredown into the camera on guarantee of no tax burden growth to those making less than $200,000.
Questions generally exceeded quality of the previous debate.
Final scoring:
Rounds: Kerry 12, Bush 4, Drawn 3.
Points: Bush—2 during rounds, 10 added supplementally, Total 12; Kerry—19 during rounds, five subtracted supplementally, one added for overall impact.
Score: Kerry 15, Bush 12— a statistical draw.

OK, I hate being this dumb, but can someone tell me WHERE on the Fox News page the poll can be found? I've been poking around there for a while and the graphics are giving me a headache, and I'm afraid I'll get a Fox News brain disorder.
OK, found the transcript. Bush said he would NOT pick the "kind of justice" who decided Dred Scott:
BUSH:
"I would pick somebody who would not allow their personal opinion to get in the way of the law. I would pick somebody who would strictly interpret the Constitution of the United States.
Let me give you a couple of examples, I guess, of the kind of person I wouldn't pick.
I wouldn't pick a judge who said that the Pledge of Allegiance couldn't be said in a school because it had the words "under God" in it. I think that's an example of a judge allowing personal opinion to enter into the decision-making process as opposed to a strict interpretation of the Constitution.
BUSH: Another example would be the Dred Scott case, which is where judges, years ago, said that the Constitution allowed slavery because of personal property rights.
That's a personal opinion. That's not what the Constitution says. The Constitution of the United States says we're all -- you know, it doesn't say that. It doesn't speak to the equality of America.
And so, I would pick people that would be strict constructionists. We've got plenty of lawmakers in Washington, D.C. Legislators make law; judges interpret the Constitution.
And I suspect one of us will have a pick at the end of next year -- the next four years. And that's the kind of judge I'm going to put on there. No litmus test except for how they interpret the Constitution."

Gordon, apparently you share a trait with Bush: when Kerry gave an excellent answer about the difference between private religious beliefs and public duties, Bush admitted he couldn't understand what he was talking about.
I'm sure that if you processed the actual content of the debate, rather than style points (or RNC spin points), you'd see that Kerry actually answered questions substantively, including the "how will you pay for this" query from Gibson (close corporate loopholes, etc.).
Bush had nothing to say. He's a man so insecure, so over his head, that he couldn't admit to one tiny mistake. "Let history judge," he said. Some accountability. After we're all dead and gone, it'll be OK for history to make its judgements. In the meantime, let's just be consistent!
Please, please, Gordon, if you're not getting paid for being an RNC shill, ask for some money. At least you'll salvage a few bucks, if not your self-respect, from what any thinking being could see was a complete disaster for Bush. Did you miss the bizarre Dred Scott statement? His frightening answer about the PATRIOT Act? His complete lack of any plan whatsoever for dealing with Iran?
Go look at the post-election online polls. Hell, even the Fox poll has Kerry ahead, 51 to 49. Everyone else responding has said that Kerry crushed Gore. I know, lots of Democrats and Republicans are rushing to get their votes in, but Kerry is STILL crushing Bush.
By the way, the day Bush takes the high road on anything is when he tells Coulter to stop writing books that call anyone who doesn't agree with the Republicans (or, to be more precise, a very extreme faction in the Republican Party) a T-R-A-I-T-O-R. I'm sick of seeing that every time I go to a bookstore, or even Costco, and if Bush wants to do more than pretend he doesn't approve of this garbage, he'd actually get off his can to denounce it. High road? Not in this debate, and not in his entire time in the White House.
