OT: (sorry, go pelosi)
check out this Kos diary with an excellent analysis of the Dred Scott reference used by whistleass last night.
A taste: Because it's all there, plain as day. The Dred Scott reference is code language for abortion rights. Here's how one anti-choice site describes it:
Stephen Douglas didn't see Dred Scott as a person with rights because he was black; now Al Gore doesn't see these children as people with rights because they are unborn.
Alluding to the tax cut and anti-terrorism bills passed by the House, DeLay said in a statement: "By contrast, the only bill brought to the floor by Democrats this week was a political smear."
That's because the Repugs control the schedule!
He must think his constituents are idiots.

Does anyone know much about Tim Ryan? A bit of Googling showed that he used to be an assistant to, un, er, Jim Trafficant. As much as I liked Ryan's speech the other day, the rhetoric and gestures were a bit Trafficantesque, which is troubling. I remember I used to like some of JT's fiery invective too until I learned he had a few screws loose, some thuggish ethics and that his angry prole act didn't translate into many benefits for his district. I'm hoping Ryan has the political skills to match his style; does anyone know?

Soon to be Speaker Pelosi is the daughter of Tommy D’Alesandro, a long-time Maryland political force of great repute. She was raised on the hard elbows and crushed insteps that is politics in Maryland. From one Bay to another, but the crabs are better on the East coast...
Speaker Pelosi! has been one of my rallying calls for months now. If not this cycle, in '06, this I swear.
And anyone else catch some of Sen. Landreiu's speeches on the floor of the Senate the last two days about how unfair the tax bill is to military families? She's been on fire. In a polite, steel magnolia manner of course, but very very impressive.
Saw abot 15 minutes of a rebroadcast on the Tennenbaum-DeMint debate, and wow, she may be a conversative Democrat, but what a smart woman who was effective and personable in her remarks.

This Tom DeLay crap is exactly what is wrong with this administration. It is like a cancer on America. Only instead of cancer, it is a "Bush" on America. During the Johnson Administration, the Democrats stopped Johnson from running for re-election, and during the Nixon Administration, the Republicans stopped Nixon from running. There is no credibility in Washington with this Group. It is all about "Power" at any cost. If all the Republcans believe that Bush deserves to be re-elected, then all of them are unfit for office, and should be replaced.

I had my doubts about her, but damn, has Pelosi turned out to be one heck of a leader. She's a pitbull and a vast improvement over Gephardt. She knows the game. The Dems scored big in the 90s by demonizing Gingrich and highlighting what a thug he was, aided by Gingrich's own public blunders. (DeLay learned from this, which is why he lurks in the shadows and tries to stay out of the public eye.) It's time the Dems did the same to DeLay and I'm glad to see them do it. He represents the worst elements of the GOP and would be a disaster if he became the face of the party.

Melanie,
I read your link and thought, WOW, bush is such a wingnut as it is, but these folks are more wingnutty and radical than him. Perish the thought.
Indeed, more than 130 prominent attorneys -- including 12 former federal judges and eight former presidents of the American Bar Association -- sent the president a letter last month denouncing his decision and alleging that the memos show that the administration sought "to circumvent long established and universally acknowledged principles of law and common decency." It went on to say that the White House and Justice Department "ignored and misinterpreted the U.S. Constitution and laws, international treaties and rules of international law."

Pelosi is acting like a House leader should, and I admire her nerve as much as her intellegence. While I will have to reduce my contributions after this cycle, I'll be giving money to Pelosi and her long-term plan to take back the House.
Landrieu now beginnning to read messages sent to her by email from people thanking her for standing up for our military forces as tax support and support for their businesses when called up have been excluded from the tax bill on the floor, being weighed down with amendments for special interests, corporations, but none for military families seeing their family member going off to war for some undetermined amount of time and danger.

"Oh, if the Democrats ever take power back...oh, man, can you imagine? They'll nail every GOP crook in the place...it would be sweeet."
One can only hope. But the folks behind the Republican party still have their hands on too many of the levers of power. So I'm going to bring up something I've brought up before (and I don't think I'm the only one):
The Fairness Doctrine
It needs to be reinstated. If we do manage to take back the White House and the Senate -- I think the House is just too much of a rigged game to hope for -- we need to start pushing our elected officials big time to bring it back. (It was also known as the Equal Time Rule.)
Saint Ronnie eliminated it. Because of that, Limbaugh, Fox News, Michael Savage and their ilk are free to spew whatever distortions and lies serve their puppet masters, and woe to anyone who attempts to present an opposing viewpoint. Or even a different viewpoint.
The airwaves need to be returned to the status of a public trust, rather than a marketable commodity.
Funny how the conservatives were all "Market forces! Market forces!" until market forces produced Howard Stern and the Janet Jackson episode...

I agree that Daschle needs to be replaced as leader (though he won't be if the Dems regain control). I'm not a critic of the guy, but we need to have a leader who's not looking over his back all the time because he represents a GOP state. We need someone from a safe seat for the job. My choices.
Chris Dodd: Lost to Daschle in race for the post in 1995, as safe as it gets and a very good leader.
Harry Reid: An ace at the whip position (he seems to live on the Senate floor), though he doesn't have the safest seat either (he's cakewalking to reelection this year, but he won by only a few hundred votes against now Sen. John Ensign in 199.
Dick Durbin: Rising star, proud liberal, good speaker. Only fault is he'll be overshadowed by Obama (who'd make a great leader in the future once he gets some years of experience in the Senate).
John Corzine: Has done a bangup job running the Senate races this year and seems to have the skills for a leadership post. Only problem is he may be moving to the NJ governor's post before long.

Tim Ryan is Rep. from Ohio (17th district). Believe he was youngest Democratic member of this Congress. Anyway, the speech was in response to draft rumors. He repeats--forcefully--all the lies that have been told by this administration and ends with (paraphrase) "So please forgive us for not believing what you're saying...Not one thing that was told to the American people about this war was true." What sets it apart from the usual crap is the passion and integrity of the speaker. Check it out: [quicktime] http://www.mydd.com/files/admin/

Gore Lawsuit Challenges Australian Election Results
(2004-10-09) -- Just hours after the polls closed across Australia, and Prime Minister John Howard headed for his fourth term, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore filed a lawsuit in international court at the Hague alleging "irregularities" in the balloting.
The election was seen by many as a referendum on Australia's participation in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the subsequent efforts to bring democracy to Iraq. Mr. Howard's opponent, Mark Latham, had promised to withdraw Australian troops from the Coalition.
"Somebody was disenfranchised or coerced down under," said Mr. Gore, now an itinerant professor. "John Howard betrayed his country. He played on their fears. There's no way they could have re-elected him legally. We'll fight this result all the way to the U.N. Security Council if need be."
Democrat presidential contender John Forbes Kerry expressed displeasure at the Australian election outcome.
"This is the wrong election result, in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr. Kerry said. "Think of the precedent this sets."

I admire Nancy Pelosi. For a while, it was she, alone, who attacked the Republican spin machine. She rocks.
OT (from my kos diary tonight) ~ In addition to the fact that John Kerry is the right candidate at the right time, his consistent opinions on the Iraq war, jobs, and the economy offer insight into why Kerry wins the White House this year.
It's all about image, and Kerry's image is consistent. (Unfortunately, I don't have the TiVo or computer skills to back up my point, but there are enough people out there who will pick up on what I'm saying here.) When the media talks about consistency, the most basic issue of brand pops up if you compare the Kerry logo from his first campaign in the 1970's to the current campaign. It is virtually the same. A strong, block, stylish, sans serif lettering in white on a blue background. The logo composition changed a bit when John Edwards came on board.
In 2004, the logo used in Kerry's primary campaign has been virtually unchanged. Like I said, the font has been tweaked slightly, but the color is the same.
For those with extreme access, if you are watching the CNN Story, "Born To Run," about the life of John Kerry, the glimpse of his first campaign sign (addressing style and font) can be found between 25 and 35 minutes of the section (sorry, that is the best time frame I can provide at this point).
Check it out. John Kerry is consistently more consistent than George W. Bush.

OT, but have to share this. I haven't gotten around to putting my bumper stickers on my car, but I have been wearing my Kerry/Edwards cap. Today when I was out I got 2 separate comments saying, "Nice hat!" along with very broad smiles.
Previous comments I've gotten have been more neutral, but always friendly. But after last night, I guess people feel free to be enthusiastic.
One of today's commenters told me that that his neighbors have had their Kerry yard signs stolen, so it seems that crap is going on here in the Detroit area, too.

My neighbor's Kerry sign got knocked over, torn somewhat on one side.
He's a NASCAR dad for Kerry.
Perhaps it was just the kids since they bike race along the sidewalks five at a time om occasion.
Fitting symbolism though. He threw away a drying machine that had its plug burnt black. Nearly caught fire or did.
SO in getting a new one he placed the old one to the curb.
Fittingly a guy drives by in an El Camino with a Bush/Cheney sticker on it. He takes the dryer, loads it up and leaves.
Proof Republicans will compromise security and safety for what they claim to be a bargain, even though all outside indications suggest risk.

A movie theater next to an Afghan restaurant in the Little Kabul area of Fremont, Calif., displays a sign thanking President Bush for the elections in Afghanistan.

Durbin will be overshadowed by Obama, but that's okay. Can't you see steady ol' Dick working along as majority leader solidifying things in the Senate while Obama shoots for the stars, and they're still teammates and happy Dems together? I can certainly see it. (And I get to be one of their constituents! Damn! Can it get any better than this! [Well yes, actually -- all this happening in a Kerry administration (and a Cubs World Series championship, but that's not gonna happen in the next century or so, dammit, so give it up.)])

Speaking of DeLay - this article about DeLay's eyelids (http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/
politics/9850474.htm) sent me into a fit of giggles. I'm sure it's a serious problem but I can't help it.
(wasn't sure we could use HTML in this comment so I opted not to try)

Hillary would be a good majority leader. Chuck Shumer too.
If the House doesn't turn Dem, Barney Frank's gonna run for Kerry's seat, and polls show he'll be shoe in.

townhall:
ScrappleFace isn't very funny or coherent. My advice is, read the Onion, or watch the Daily Show. They do a much better job on fake news, and are better at making fun of Democrats.
Good satire requires brains and honesty, ya know? That's why there's so little good humorous writing on the Right these days.

Very nice -- triple-nested parens. It kinda reminds me of Peter Schickele's biography of P.D.Q. Bach, which had a footnote with a footnote. (A toenote, perhaps?)

The GOP has always stood for integrity, character, and honorable conduct on the part of public servants.
And the moon is made of green cheese, the world is safer because Saddam is in jail, and your check is in the mail.

Lose Daschle. And it better be a woman. Hillary would make the wingnuts crazy.

Daschle is in a bind. He's a nice guy.
For those who says he can't speak tough, they forget he's a veteran.
You do not go onto offensive until the numbers can justify it.
Too bad no matter who takes over the whole thing will crash. No revenues incoming, highest ever outgoing expense, and the economy teeters on the edge of a cliff.
Kerry has drummed support for some Repub names in debates, and Dashcle can play nice enough to maintain middle ground.
Of course we wanna run the trolls outta Congress, but voters will start that soon enough.

I'm thinking Durbin or Hawkins. Any other nominations out there? How does everyone feel about dumping Dashel?
definitely lose daschle. replace him with durbin, harkin, rockefeller or mikulski. but durbin would be best.
who's hawkins?
townhall, did you and anonymous pull that article out of your own asses, or out of each other's? or are you and anonymous merely alter egos of one high-school journalist?
