I think we should all begin calling in to daytime radio shows, say anything to get on the air then talk quickly about David Smith's arrest.
We should tell Smith we are going to plaster his name, mugshot and arrest record all over the internet. Anytime anyone types in xxx, horny, liar, cheater, big, little, Bush, if, and, or but into their search engine, it is going to bring up his face and arrest record.
Yo ultimate suxors, I'm pretty sure they prefer to be called "BaltiMORONS." HAHA! Suck on it, oriole-eaters, there's no place for you at the table. Orange food is soul poison, don't be puttin' it on the AMERICAN LAZY SUSAN of POLITICS! SHUT UP DEMOCRAPS! DETROIT WHAT!?

From talkingpointsmemo, Josh quotes a knowledgeable correspondent:
What they're deathly afraid of is the stink of this thing will somehow waft over to their advertisers. That's of course why they're not selling local ad time for this show. Having worked in the ad department of Sinclair's competitor, I know that local Sinclair stations make over 60% of their ad revenue from their nightly 6pm newscast. That's their bread and butter. You make a concerted effort to go after their top advertisers on the 5pm/6pm news hour and you'll have the executives spiking this show so fast it'll be amazing.

Besides, shouldn't he be in a sex offender database or something? Isn't that information online somewhere? Online and open to the public as a service meant to inform neighbors that the have a sex offender in the neighborhood?
I hope Kerry takes Bush straight on concerning 9/11 on Wednesday. I want to hear him say “Mr. President, you take credit for being heroic in your reactions after 9/11. Think Tank: Iraq War Distracted U.S.
By MARK LAVIE, Associated Press Writer
TEL AVIV, Israel - The war in Iraq did not damage international terror groups, but instead distracted the United States from confronting other hotbeds of Islamic militancy and actually "created momentum" for many terrorists, a top Israeli security think tank said in a report released Monday.

Over at Hoffmania, he suggests that Kerry call his bluff and offer to appear for a free hour of promoting himself.
Mr. Kerry - CALL SINCLAIR'S BLUFF!
That's right. Call their bluff. Call Sinclair on their "equal time" gambit. Show up and match their hour of the Kerry smear with another hour. An hour of John Forbes Kerry setting the record straight. Going after Bush. Going after Cheney. Going after the failed policies of this administration.
On all 62 of the Sinclair stations. Every one of them.
For good measure, bring along some tapes of your own. Bush in the Florida classroom. U.S. soldiers in Iraq being ambushed. A woman who loses her son in combat. Where can you get these clips?
A phone call to Micahel Moore ought to do it. He'll be pleased to supply the clips for this.
But do it! Call them on their bluff to give you an hour of equal time. And if they lay ANY restrictions on you, they'll be revealed as the partisan liars which they are.
Go. A free hour of primetime TV airtime awaits. And you'll have the last word, Mr. Kerry.
That is, if Sinclair's as fair as they claim to be.
And if they decide to pull the thing entirely, then we'll know how they had ulterior motives.
oh, and fuck you, hat.

MYOB - I'm kind of late with this - but you asked Atrios if this wasn't something Rove would do. No - Rove would fabricate the sex charges and then do all the rest - contact people and ask them if they were aware that a sex offender was a big Kerry supporter. Only that person wouldn't really be a sex offender.
See the diff?
Rove must have taken lessons from the FBI. This is an old, revered FBI trick to intimidate witnesses. They will go to the person's creditors and ask if the creditor is aware that the person is invoved in a federal criminal case. Which will technically be true, but...pretty soon, the witness is terrified.

TV channels to rubbish Kerry on eve of poll
Julian Borger in Washington
Tuesday October 12, 2004
The Guardian
One of America's biggest television companies has announced plans to broadcast a film days before the presidential election that portrays the Democratic candidate John Kerry as betraying his fellow soldiers in Vietnam.
The conservative Sinclair Broadcast Group will reportedly present the film as news on the 62 local channels it owns nationwide.
The film will replace normal primetime programmes supplied by the national networks and reach up to a quarter of the electorate, many in critical battleground states, about a week before the election on November 2.
In the film, Stolen Honour: Wounds That Never Heal, former US prisoners of war claim that their North Vietnamese interrogators used anti-war statements by Mr Kerry to undermine morale and persuade them to admit war crimes.
A press release for the film, made by a conservative journalist and ex-marine, Carlton Sherwood, accused Mr Kerry of "lies, false testimony and distortions" for his remarks to Congress in 1971, saying US troops had been responsible for atrocities.
The press release alleges that "in mere moments in 1971, Kerry willingly gave the North Vietnamese what the brave PoWs had endured torture and solitary confinement to avoid saying".
Terry McCauliffe, the Democratic party chairman, said the the film was "garbage", and announced his intention to mount a legal challenge.
Mr Kerry has been dogged by such attacks for more than two months, mostly in the form of advertisements paid for by a group calling itself Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
- snip -
Under US broadcasting rules, the film actually gives airtime to Mr Kerry. Andrew Jay Schwartzman, who heads the Media Access Project watchdog, said: "The way our equal time law works depends on what candidate is appearing on the air - so the equal time rule would run to Bush, not to Kerry. It does not provide Kerry a right to reply."
"What this shows is the dangers of media concentration. These are the problems that arise when one company controls 62 channels."

He's going after a presidential candidate and united states senator in a crass political stunt that is an abuse of his position as a broadcaster. If you can't stand the heat, don't engage in such behavior.

What keeps them in the Republican Party? Is it the racism or the greed?

It's the stupidity of course.

"Sex Offenders for Bush" could replace the swifties (some of them look a tad weird to me too). Old Smith could be up there on the TV waving his $2000 dollar donation and going on about the Republican party being a party of inclusion. The party even has a place for those publicly reviled. Hey and you could even probably fit a few fit prostitutes in the background. That sure would get people watching. I'm on the phone to Rove now.
Seriously though do you reckon his record still exists aftr this stunt?

What keeps them in the Republican Party? Is it the racism or the greed?
in the old GOP, it was like choosing a major. You had to pick just one. But with the neocons coming it, it's awesome. You can have both!
Look at Richard Perle, double-minoring in graft and extortion. Or Douglas Feith, taking time off from his study of how to expand the defintion of dangerous asshat to delve into researching how to make even less sense. And don't even get me started on Tom DeLay -- he's a regular renaissance man!
We know the guy is slime, but attacking him personally is not the answer.
Fuck yes it is. The gloves are off. This is war.

"Republicans for the Environment"
So, once again, I ask: What keeps them in the Republican Party? Is it the racism or the greed?
I believe that they are trying to change the GOP from the inside out, kind of like the "Log Cabin Republicans". I don't know how sucessful they are but I sure as heck am not going to knock them.

i know right where that place is, in cockeysville, of course i do, that's where i lived. fortunately i am far away these days.

also and OT, why is this not in the NYT et al. Mother Jones, i like their stuff but the first thing one says is they're librul, not that there is anything wrong with that.
He was growing skeptical of the administration’s motives in Iraq. “Stuff wasn’t adding up,” he recalls. “Bush was trying to connect the terrorists with Iraq, and there was no proof for that. I was starting to think that we kind of put the blame on Iraq so we could go over there and make money for companies.” He considered what his job might be if he were deployed; as a cryptologist, he could have been handling information leading to raids and arrests. “I didn’t want to be a part of putting innocent people in prison,” he says. “I felt that what we were doing there was wrong.”
Though Sanders has kept away from the spotlight, other deserters have attracted headlines around the world—and drawn criticism from the war’s supporters. Fox’s Bill O’Reilly called their actions “insulting to America, and especially to those American soldiers who have lost their lives fighting terrorists.”
why doesn't bill join the marines? just say'n.

Kingfish, are you signed up with the local party? I know the Virginia coordinated campaign is slaving away these days with canvassing, phone banking, still running down party id on some people, etc. If you possibly can, take off election day and volunteer to phone bank, poll watch, or drive people to vote. And carry lit/buttons/stickers with you everywhere. I've given away my last Kerry button a half dozen times.
If your state has a coordinated campaign, work with them. It would be nice to get Kerry elected, but it would be even better to win the senate and house races too.

Putting a hammerlock on this jerk is fine by me.
OK calm down and ask yourself, in the end what will it accomplish? So you get the thing pulled, in the meantime the Mighty Wurlitzer is fired up and the Repugs start crying CENSORSHIP. Soon everybody's got to see it. Remember that's what happened with F 9/11. Much better to run a rebuttal or "Going Upriver" while at the same time letting people know that while this is blatant politics you are not going to try to censor it, just give the facts.

welcome to the new political reality, where the decent side realizes it needs to go down into the sewer and fight the terrorists where they are (which is not iraq BTW)
President Bush (news - web sites) has called the war in Iraq an integral part of the war on terrorism, saying that deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) hoped to develop unconventional weapons and could have given them to Islamic militants across the world.
But the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University said that instead of striking a blow against Islamic extremists, the Iraq war "has created momentum for many terrorist elements, but chiefly al-Qaida and its affiliates."
Instead, he said, the Iraq campaign is having the opposite effect, drawing Islamic extremists from other parts of the world to join the battle.
"On a strategic level as well as an operational level," Brom concluded, "the war in Iraq is hurting the war on international terrorism." but i already knew that and i'm just a mook with a computer.

I thought about that. We may take something that most people would not have scene and make everybody want to see it. Probably what they had in mind. It is just that nothing like this has ever been pulled before and it motivates me to do more to get these people out of power. Sinclair should be attacked and destroyed in an economic way. If we can take it down it will only help take down others. It would give the Progressive movement a victory and giver us more clout in dealing with others. It also helps organize and focus the movement by showing that the so called "Liberal Media" is really the corporate media whores that we have said all along. What do ya'll think

So you get the thing pulled, in the meantime the Mighty Wurlitzer is fired up and the Repugs start crying CENSORSHIP.
so then we get to explain to the petty little motherfuckers for the 457th time that censorship is government suppression of free speech, and that these assholes are a private company and are responding to the requests of their customers, who have made it abundantly clear that Sinclair will not profit from this type of behavior.
There's an Indian restaurant near my house that is agreed by every food critic in my city to be fantastic. I won't go near the place. A friend of mine ate there, a cockroach scurried across the plate and not only did the hostess not apologize, she didn't comp them them the goddamn dinner which was the least they could have done.
Someplace gives you shitty service, you don't go back and you warn off your friends before they spend money on food that's got bugs in it.
This is no different. My friend's not telling anybody at this restaurant they can't cook the food. She's just telling people who mention it to her that the place sucks. I for one am grateful for the information.

Filkerton -- aww, SHIT.
I've been watching since 7pm here. If I'd known how it was going to be, I'd have recorded over 2.5 of my most treasured videotapes to trap this without a single regret.
They're BOUND to release this as a DVD. We'll need funds no matter what happens November 2. They should, however, release it tomorrow morning. BTW, I could swear I read someone here was bit-torrenting it -- that's good, right? (I know nothing of this bit-torrent technology.)

Putting a hammerlock on this jerk is fine by me.
Look, the idea is to try to attract people to the Democratic Party by being an appealing alternative to the nasty, low down dirty tricks of the Republicans. Otherwise, Nader is right, they're all the same (at least in the average joe's mind).
Make a media case out of this first by stating that this is blatantly unfair, then without threatening to try to censor it, first inquire if it is legal (even if you already know the answer) then publically seek ways to counter-balance it. Will the stations involved give equal time (if they won't that would be big news of crass partisanship; then you censor it purely out of fairness).

OT, but need a little clarification - are crack pundits similar to crack whores? Ie. pundits on crack? Or am I reading it wrong?

Back to the cargo inspection proposal by the Democratic challenger. Although a promising and far-reaching homeland security plan, it would be important that the first suspicious container to be inspected is an empty suit that governs from a bunker in Washington DC, the Preznut himself, Dubya. Please help us, John Kerry - help us help ourselves - before the Chimperor destroys the english language any further:

Not true, but thanks for sharing your theory.
It's never a bad idea to confront Republican hypocrites with the truth about their own behavior. It's not a dirty trick; it's a moral duty.
Nader's got his own moral failings to worry about, and the "average Joe" you invoke couldn't give two shits about what he has to say. He is, to coin a phrase, a dead man walking.

Philalethes, You're right, it's not true. But were talking about perceptions here not truth. That's why I said: otherwise, Nader is right, they're all the same (at least in the average joe's mind).
and the "average Joe" you invoke couldn't give two shits about what he has to say. True again but Nader still does have some followers and polls show them fluctuating between .5 to 3%. Do Democrats really want to estrange those who are already "holding their noses" to vote with them? Then when you count in those who never vote because they think both partys are the same and they are tired of all the negativity but who were thinking about making an exception this time around since Bush is such an ass. Do Democrats really want to get involved in another of these petty back-and-forth disputes?
I'm just saying that while censoring Sinclair would be satisfying in the short term it could bite Dems in the butt in a big way a little further down the road. Know what I mean?
Now this would probably stop them, they have to broadcast, after their program, a show about Bush's military "service", just out of fairness :-D I suspect that the interset in the Kerry piece would wane rather quickly.

If you really, seriously think this is a time to win on "the issues", think about the corporate tax relief bill on its way to the shitheads' desk. Is there any reason to entertain the merest hint of a suggestion that anyone in DC plays fair? Money trumps fairness every time. Always will.
Some wimpy-assed liberal squealing
"Unfair! Unfair!" means nothing to these guys. Hauling their asses into court, siccing the FEC, SEC and/or the FCC on them, having DS spend his entire week on the phone with angry major shareholders and furious advertisers, not to mention network legal departments, that means something. A blowtorch to his wallet makes a lasting impression. Part of the reason he thinks he can get away with it is because he thinks he can get away with it. Show him, in no uncertain terms, that he can't. Squealing "Unfair! Unfair!" isn't going to cut it this time. Like whoever said, don't bring a popsicle stick to knife fight.

You're right that squealing "Unfair! Unfair!" won't have any effect on Sinclair - it's for the media and the public's information. And you don't have to "squeal" just be professional. Let it be known that you view this as blatantly partisan however you are not trying to censor, just have equal time. Give them about week say (since the days are running out), give Sinclair a chance to offer equal time. After this, when it's plain in the public eye that they don't intend to offer balance then go big guns based on fairness and the law.

I have written a letter that you can forward to the people at Sinclair..
Just cut change the name and function of the people that you submit the emails to....which are courtesy of Air America Radio ( I take no credit for this help )
Mark Hyman, spokesman: mhymen@sbgnet.com.
David Smith, President and CEO: dsmith@sbgnet.com
Joe Defeo, Vice President and News Director: jdefeo@sbgnet.com
Please feel free to use this letter verbatim!
Dear David Smith,
I highly disagree with your decision as CEO of the Sinclair Broadcasting group to allow a partisan documentary play during prime time two weeks before the election. As the CEO you have the power to prevent this blatant disregard for the accepted norm of broadcasts during election time that has allowed for equal voice of opposing views. By allowing such an act to continue you are overstepping the limits that have been granted to you by the citizens of the United States who ultimately own the rights to the broadcast spectrum that your business has been permitted to use. I therefore urge you to cease this plan of action in favor of allowing the citizens of this great country to get equal and opposite coverage of the various political spectra.
In addition, I would like to inform you that if you continue to persist with such action then the people of the United States will be forced to take action. For instance http://www.theleftcoaster.com/ar...ves/
002985.html, lists a number of stations that are coming up for renewal of their FCC license. It would be less than fortunate if thousands of protesters would happen to file grievances against your corporation and hence bog you down with months of lawsuits. In addition, a comprehensive list of your sponsors has been listed on http://www.boycottsbg.com/advertisers/ and is being targeted for boycott in the event that you follow through with your decision. Finally, I would like to point out that the press release that the Sinclair group gave in response to ABC’s decision to read the names of the (at the time ) 721 American soldiers killed in battle, read “Mr. Koppel and 'Nightline' are hiding behind this so-called tribute in an effort to highlight only one aspect of the war effort and in doing so to influence public opinion against the military action in Iraq”. It would be quite unfortunate if the Sinclair group’s reputation became irreparably damaged by following through with a course of action that would only solidify claims that it engages in grossly partisan endeavors.
Sincerely,
Please alter , enhance, modify it so that we can crush these SOBS!!!

Sinclair, what a joke. Every time the CEO opens his mouth, the stock drops 10%. It's down over 50% this year alone. Are they masochists? The company is 68% controlled by the Smith family, so they take the equity hit disproportionately. I don't get it.
Is it just me, or is the entire Repub party self-destructing? Sex-offender CEOs with tanking stocks. Senate candidate claiming "rampant lesbianism" (OKLA). Senate candidate saying pregnant single women shouldn't teach in public school (SC). Senate candidate obviously campaigning with worsening Alzheimer's (KY). WTF is going on?

These calls for equal time are incredibly naive. The last thing you want is Kerry or anybody else appearing with a rightwing host under the guise of equal time. Not only would it be an O'Reilly-type fiasco, it would legitimize this criminal enterprise.
People better understand we're at war here. These guys stole one election already. Now they have Sinclair with stations that reach 25% of the country, side-by-side with fellow neo-Nazi Rupert Murdoch and his Fox network/newspaper chain reaching the remainder. There was a reason the GOP congress threw out restrictions regarding conglomerate media ownership. Everything is geared toward ONE PARTY rule.
If they steal another election through the use of their anything-goes playbook, you won't have to worry whether to boycott or play Mr. Free Speech advocate. You're going to end up the modern day equivalent of those "understanding" Jews in Berlin circa 1934.
In response to an expanded Patriot Act, continued Tom Delay re-apportionment campaigns guaranteeing one-party rule, massive corporate corruption and environmental exploitation, you're most likely going to see the reinvention of groups like the Weather Underground and homegrown Baader-Meinhoff Gangs. Because once these guys have consolidated their rule, which is about 80% complete at this point, peace love and understanding will be a fool's errand.
The Taliban blew up the Buddha statues. Ashcroft covered the Spirit of Justice statue at OUR Department of Justice, both literally and metaphorically, so he wouldn't have to gaze upon Lady Justice's naked breasts. Welcome to rule under the American Taliban. Time to quit snoozing, folks.

These calls for equal time are incredibly naive.
Should be no problem for the Repubs. Now that they've suddenly become the champions of free speech and the first amendment they shouldn't mind at all giving their opponents a chance to respond.
jimi, your letter has good points but it's also a bit confused in places:
As the CEO you have the power to prevent this blatant disregard for the accepted norm of broadcasts during election time that has allowed for equal voice of opposing views. huh?
I therefore urge you to cease this plan of action in favor of allowing the citizens of this great country to get equal and opposite coverage you're not asking them to cease (yet) just provide equal time (with no follow up rebuttal on their part).
in an effort to highlight only one aspect of the war effort and in doing so to influence public opinion against the military action in Iraq don't you mean influence public opinion for the military action in Iraq?

Regretfully, I agree. Gets our heads out of our .. armpits and realize that this is really a do or die situation. Literally.
However, Bush is the sympton, not the disease. Been going on for over 10 years, in hindsight of course. We all thought it was just some wingnuts like Gingrich hitting a homer for once, not corking the bat so that they hit a homer every turn at the plate.
With the media all in place, the Supremes ready to help, the R-Congress and then in 2000, the Cherry on top selection of bush, their rule of us was accomplished.
It will take longer than just the defeat of bush (if we can do that first of course) to get America back. If we cannot defeat Bush, then I agree we will have to return to underground groups as well as challenging them in every legal format. Won't win because of slanted judiciary, but we have to get the people to wake up.
Getting the public to follow will be difficult. Just look at Bush's poll numbers to see just how difficult it will be to get the American public to disbelieve their news and believe the underground.
Dis-selecting Bush is only the beginning.

We're on the same page. I'm advocating use of any and all weaponry in the arsenal yes but do it in an thoughtful, orderly fashion.
This time, it has to hurt. THEM. Not us. If you stop it legally right now people are going to wonder 'what it is you don't want them to see so badly', what are you trying to hide? And while you may hurt Sinclair, the rest of the Repugs will be delighted. It'd be kind of like pinching a giant who has you by the throat.

Sinclair Broadcasting has the following statement on their website this morning.
"We welcome your comments regarding the upcoming special news event featuring the topic of Americans held as prisoners of war in Vietnam. The program has not been videotaped and the exact format of this unscripted event has not been finalized. Characterizations regarding the content are premature and are based on ill-informed sources.
Massachusetts Senator John Kerry has been invited to participate. You can urge him to appear by calling his Washington, DC campaign headquarters".

Sinclair Broadcasting and it's stations should be boycotted after making a list of it's advertisers to inform them that you will not be buying their products or using their services. State agencies should not pay for public service messages on these stations. If these Republican thugs are allowed to get away with this they will open the door for the rest of them to become the Radio Pyongyang of the United States of Slimearica.
I'm told CNN gave Sinclair a soap box to promote their Bush Push this morning. Boycott CNN too.

No, not a true story. Baltimore, Maryland, USA is named for Baltimore, County Cork, Ireland. In Gaellic, Baltimore means "white house"

There is no more "equal time" rule.
It was abolished.
That's why we have outfits like Sinclair and Fox to worry about.
They don't have to be fair. And besides, if they consider the Kerry peice "News" they wouldn't have had to give equal time.

One of his correspondents (who works in a local TV market and has friends in Sinclair local stations) writes this:
What they're deathly afraid of is the stink of this thing will somehow waft over to their advertisers. That's of course why they're not selling local ad time for this show. Having worked in the ad department of Sinclair's competitor, I know that local Sinclair stations make over 60% of their ad revenue from their nightly 6pm newscast. That's their bread and butter. You make a concerted effort to go after their top advertisers on the 5pm/6pm news hour and you'll have the executives spiking this show so fast it'll be amazing.

actually, the st. paul police department takes pictures of all the johns and hookers they bust and post them immediately on their web site.
Heh. Here (or, more precisely, the county a mile west of me) they have a sheriff who posts his entire wanted list on a full page of the local newspaper.
In color.

What is needed is for a documentary that supports the fact that Vietnam did indeed have some bad apples as Kerry stated. There's no way that Kerry can or should have to personally rebut 2 hours of programing. But a doc would have other voices and historical scenes confirming what happened.
