This might be a touch OT, and a bit lengthy, but to aid anyone who's planning on contacting advertisers, here's a list I made. Gadflyer listed some email addresses for national companies that advertise on Sinclair, one of which is Procter & Gamble, a major maker of home products. So I did an off-the-cuff assessment of my P&G buying habits (go to www.pg.com for a list of brands) and then cross-referenced to other major marketers' brands (caveat: these other guys may just as easily be Sinclair advertisers, but hey, one at a time):

Puffs Kleenex (KimberlyClk)

(My apologies if this comes out with wacky formatting, I'm a bit of a Haloscan novice.)

Anyway, if you contact the station sales managers and then the P&G PR contact, you can make a similar list of easy-to-swap product brands. Brand loyalty is the MAJOR currency of marketing/sales. And it doesn't have to be logical, should any of these companies also advertise on Sinclair (i.e., you can swing the stick both directions, depending on whom you're trying to leverage).

Start with auto dealers. They're big buyers, and they rely upon cultivating a reputation for home-town honesty.

Tell them that you'd rather not see their reputation tarnished by being associated with Sinclair. Mention other stations that offer real local coverage that isn't dictated from Baltimore. (Especially good in the South and Midwest.)

And yes, this is meant to keep us busy for a couple of days while the wingnuts sit on their bloated asses. But Sinclair's own bloated ass depends upon a Bush victory, since it's only that which will provide the further deregulation that can keep 'em afloat... they're desperate.

I live in the Milwaukee area; the only sponsor listed there so far is the Milwaukee Bucks. Who are owned by Senator Kohl!! So I'll write him. It may be that the Bucks are broadcast on one of the Sinclair stations. I have no idea as I am totally uninterested in basketball.

Jadoo Power Systems, Inc., a producer of portable power systems, announced Sept. 28 that it had been awarded a contract to supply its products, which are used for covert surveillance operations, to US Special Operations Command. I could get to the list of advertisers about an hour ago, but now it's being blocked by my corporate firewall. I work through a few agencies for the gubment, but my corporate location and facilities belong to Lockheed Martin.

If you live in DC, you've been inundated with Lockheed 'leader' advertising all over the place for the past few months - most trumpeting Bush in one way or another, but not so directly that Lockheed can be accused of openly campaigning for Bush.

Just a little conspiracy theory is all...

The advertising on the Milwaukee Sinclair stations (WCGV and WVTV)is the Milwaukee Bucks.

Our Senator, Herb Kohl owns the Bucks. I just phoned his local Milwaukee office (couldn't raise anyone in DC) urging him to pull the Bucks advertising from these two stations. I will phone the Bucks organization and do the same (414-277-0500).

On Wisconsinites...defund the defamers...

On another post I mentioned that I think that it is quite possible that Sinclair just threw this out as an easy way to throw shit at Kerry and motivate w's base while having no intention of actually airing this propoganda.

As with 527's who produce controversial spots and get a lot of coverage w/o even having to air them, Sinclair gets to discredit Kerry with shameful attacks.

It can then announce "Because of relentless attacks against us by well-financed special interest groups and the threat of lawsuits, we will be unable to air the documentary that the Kerry campaign does not want you to see."

Very plausible, no?

But does it really matter if BC04 whip up their base? NO. The problem is that this movie will be seen by a bunch of undecided voters, who may very well view this as tipping the scales in favor of voting Bush. The conservative base is a lock for Bush (except for those few deficit hawks who may lodge a protest vote--Lincoln Chafee et al.). Let them have a mass DVD release or a pay-per-view event--the only ones who will pay for this crap are those who were never going to vote for Kerry in the first place.

I don't really think too many people are going to watch this movie if it is aired.

Truth be told, I think that just as many, if not more, reasonable people will see this for what it is... a blatant false attack against Kerry and an abuse of corporate power.

At this point, W has to hope that he can get a huge amount of his supporters out to the polls, and I think that is what he is really after. With his blatant attacks against Kerry, he has more or less given up on trying to lure undecideds.

Some of you may disagree that a pro and anti Kerry film needs to be show on Sinclair stations. But I think the issue is that a broadcasting group needs to follow the FCC's equal time rules. If we say don't show the anti-Kerry film (which I dislike greatly) then we may appear as against the equal time issue as Sinclair. I dislike the venom spewing from the RNC and the groups supporting Bush- but it's part of the game. So below is a sample of the letter I have sent to PepsiCo and a similar one to Chili's Restaurants. Have more to do! Feel free to use it, if you want.

"It has come to my attention that you advertise on the various Sinclair stations. As a consumer of Pepsi products and diner at Pepsi owned
restaurants, I am very concerned about the one-sided presentation of the anti-Kerry documentary that the Sinclair stations must air. I have never participated in any boycott of any products before; however, if your
company fails to support equal airtime (same franework/same time space) for a pro-Kerry film on the Sinclair stations then I feel that I must encourage a boycott of your products in the Fort Worth/Dallas area. Regardless of the owner's political views, the Sinclair stations need to present both sides of the issues to their audiences according to FCC rules."

I got a great idea, Steve. Let's have Sinclair broadcast Farenheit 9/11, too. That's a movie/documentary also, and it criticizes Bush. Assuming they both get prime time preempted broadcasting, that would be perfectly acceptable. Otherwise, to be fair and balanced, anyone who wants to see this anti-Kerry movie should be able to go see it in the theater and pay just like they did for F9/11

This is a common misconception, Steve, so I don't fault you for subscribing to it, really. Maybe you just don't know the truth, so all you have is the RNC talking point on this subject.

Here's the truth - google it yourself if you're interested in the truth.

Kerry's testimony in 1971 was based substantially on testimony previously given by over 150 other Vietnam veterans. Kerry simply reported what was stated by those other veterans.

You see, Steve, Kerry was actually supporting those veterans by ensuring that what they saw and what they were subjected to in Vietnam was heard by the people who could do something to change it.

Don't let Sinclair turn this against us. This production is NOT speech, it is COMMERCE. It's taken me a few years, but i've come to the conclusion that political advertising is not speech. Television stations make buckets of money airing this crap, so they don't have to cover campaigns. The stations then cover their ass by analyzing the ad's truthfulness. And to top it off, all the "coverage" you get of a campaign is the "horse race." I've sworn off all television news (at least the first 15 minutes), but thank GOD for "The Daily Show" and Keith Olbermann's "Countdown."

Suggestion----

Call the local affiliate and ask for a listing of their local advertisers.

When they refuse, tell them that you wanted the list so you will know who to contact locally so you can tell them about your planned boycott if they continue to advertise on the Sinclair affiliate.

The word will get back, I assure you.

_Actually_ I've yet to see any winger propaganda regarding Kerry's speech to Congress that doesn't use some sort of creative editting. Like the Swifties dropping the "they said" from Kerry's reference to the anecdote's of confessed war criminals to make it appear like Kerry personally claims to have witnessed certain events.

Mr. Thompson, can you name one bit of good that came out of staying in Vietnam until 1975 and withdrawing under essentially the same terms as were proposed at the Paris Conference in 19-friggin-68? Or would you prefer we still be fighting in Vietnam today?

Kerry is like the friend who takes keys away from the drunkard. The drunk inevitably gets pissed and belligerent, but upon honest reflection he sees that the friend was right. Kerry was right in 71, and he's today. Those he can't see that are clouded by hubris.

I'm convinced that the locals are receiving detailed instructions on how to stonewall us from corporate. Maybe Sinclair is tracking Kos and Atrios.

This summer I worked at the law firm that dealt with Randy Kuhl's divorce and the entire file is still sitting under the desk where I used to work.

I always wanted to look through it but, since I was the messenger.. I was always busy. And besides, it's sort of illegal to look through a client's personal files.

Given the DKos story, I wish I had opened that file.. I knew right where to look to find the charges levelled against him..

I went directly to a local advertiser, a law firm specializing in medical malpractice, and suggested that their best interests did not lie in supporting a partisan smear that works to support an administartion that has targeted trial lawyers.

The only other advertiser listed was a hair salon, and I'm afraid I didn't have the same sway as an anchorman might. I'm a consumer of a lot fewer hair care products.

When we organize on a point that's particularly threatening, the trolls come alive. They start making inflamatory comments. It's as though they're trying to change the focus. That tells me they are very afraid of our ability to mobilize.

My suggestion is to ignore the Kerry baiting. Rather than respond to some insult or whatever, simply dig up another Sinclair advertiser and contact their VP of marketing. Tell them you will be adding their company's name on a weblist promoting the boycott of products advertised on Sinclair stations.

Made two phone calls to advertisers in my home town. Both indicated it wasn't the first call they'd received about this and that they would be taking it up with the local Fox affiliate.

Hi all,

I've been emailing and emailing various advertisers, especially in the city I plan to move to (Asheville, NC).

I have gotten back many emails with the wonderful words, "User Unknown". I have checked on some websites and the email address is correct. Do you think these are bouncing because of the amount of emails they are receiving, or don't they like me? I'm all for writing and calling, but I sure do hate it when all that work is going nowhere except back to my computer.

I had no idea when I chose to advertise with the local NBC 40 that they would do this. I advertise in several ways with numerous companies, none of which struck me in a way to cause alarm. In light of this information, I will not be advertising with Sinclair any more. I called my advertising agent earlier this evening and they will be pulling my advertising effective immediately. To sum this up, I hope that you and your family will not hold the fact that I advertise so that I may obtain business to make a living in this world, something that I know you can understand.
