Atrios, could you start a new thread entitled "Debate Advice for Kerry" or something to that effect? I think there are a lot of good ideas floating around this site and it would be great to see everyone brainstorm together.

We could then cull some of the better ideas from this thread and send them off to Kerry's website; hopefully it isn't too late to pass along a few tips to the campaign.

As my first offering on the topic, I would encourage Kerry to compare Bush's criticism of Kerry as a tax and spend liberal to H.W. Bush's criticism of Clinton on the same topic. We all know how that turned out. 8 years of a booming economy, accomplished without significant shifts in tax burdens. And it can happen again.

One and done.

Hey...now we have proof that they are cheating. Go to www.klas-tv.com and read Las Vegas CBS 8 breaking news story. It is about a company called America Votes. They are listed on Career builder as being funded by the RNC and they have at least two employees who have come out against them throwing away ANY registration forms where the person checked Democrat. The news station checked with the state officials to see if these alleged registered voters had been cheated and at this point they have found at least 300 people who say they registered dem. and now they are not registered to vote. I am asking that we all start calling and emailing our local stations and newspapers to get this story on.

Voter Registrations Possibly Trashed

(Oct. 12) -- Employees of a private voter registration company allege that hundreds, perhaps thousands of voters who may think they are registered will be rudely surprised on election day. The company claims hundreds of registration forms were thrown in the trash.

Anyone who has recently registered or re-registered to vote outside a mall or grocery store or even government building may be affected.

The I-Team has obtained information about an alleged widespread pattern of potential registration fraud aimed at democrats. Thee focus of the story is a private registration company called Voters Outreach of America, AKA America Votes.

The out-of-state firm has been in Las Vegas for the past few months, registering voters. It employed up to 300 part-time workers and collected hundreds of registrations per day, but former employees of the company say that Voters Outreach of America only wanted Republican registrations.

Two former workers say they personally witnessed company supervisors rip up and trash registration forms signed by Democrats.

"We caught her taking Democrats out of my pile, handed them to her assistant and he ripped them up right in front of us. I grabbed some of them out of the garbage and she tells her assisatnt to get those from me," said Eric Russell, former Voters Outreach employee.

Eric Russell managed to retrieve a pile of shredded paperwork including signed voter registration forms, all from Democrats. We took them to the Clark County Election Department and confirmed that they had not, in fact, been filed with the county as required by law.

So the people on those forms who think they will be able to vote on Election Day are sadly mistaken. We attempted to speak to Voters Outreach but found that its office has been rented out to someone else.

The landlord says Voters Outreach was evicted for non-payment of rent. Another source said the company has now moved on to Oregon where it is once again registering voters. It's unknown how many registrations may have been tossed out, but another ex-employee told Eyewitness News she had the same suspicions when she worked there.

It's going to take a while to sort all of this out, but the immediate concern for voters is to make sure you really are registered.

The company has been largely, if not entirely funded, by the Republican National Committee. Similar complaints have been received in Reno where the registrar has asked the FBI to investigate.

Use Janklow, but use him carefully. He might just know where the bodies are buried. Just be careful that they are real bodies, not Roves plants.

If we can nail the RNC hard on this one, it could dramatically change the course of the election. They have been subverting our democracy, and we have to stop them.

If Bush wins andthis comes out afterward, this will get buried. Ashcroft will be assigned to investigate, a few low level folks involved who really don't know the whole story will be convicted, and the RNC will issue a statement about how shocked they are...and business will continue as usual.

Use every tool at our disposal. And Janklow is certainly a tool. (In both the useful and pejorative senses of the word tool, obviously.)

Hi, hardly new or unexpected, but a reporter friend says he's picking up very strong hints that the "October Surprise" will be an allegedly major series of arrests of alleged terrorist leaders.
Not Osama, but a bunch of others. Be prepared. The seizing of indymedia's servers in Europe could be just the beginning. Also hearing elsewhere that the US govt. is planting viruses and spyware on Islamic sites, then tracing everything a site visitor does. Creepy, just in time for Ramadan.

I emailed about 40 newspapers this morning with Atrios' first mention of the voter mess. I even included someone else's list of names, emails, cellphones of the local organizations involved in this. You know, to give all those busy reporters a helping hand.

I read all over the internet last night about a private voter registration company in Nevada tearing up Dem registrations, but sending the Repubs in...I thought wow, what a huge story and sat down to watch Jeff Greenfield's report from Nevada for Anderson Cooper on CNN ready to hear his assesment of the situation. Instead I got that both candidates are working really hard to win it. THEN! And I'm sorry, I know this is against our beloved Oddball Keith, but I read a few articles on the web pointing out that Bush is against his church's stance on many important issues like gun control and the death penalty, but the media never calls him on them...So last night, what's the number 4 story on Countdown? Catholic bishops telling people it is a sin to vote for Kerry. Only mention of Bush? That he went to talk to the Pope about getting his help to be reelected...No discussion of whether that's a little too over the boundaries of church and state. Fuck. Increasingly I am feeling more and more depressed about the whole thing.

Absolutely not innocent. It was the headline on the Post's homepage, from which most folks would link to the article, but not the headline of the article proper, or the headline on the print edition.

Not that the print headline: "Lifelong Collector of Data can Bog Down his Staffs," is much better... but the "Lurch" is definitely a flag for the dittoheads (if not a subliminable massage).

Let us not forget that Janklow is the scumbag who ran a stop sign at 70mph and killed a firefighter riding on his motorcycle. He then tried to lie his way out of responsibility for this criminally negligent act. He served only 100 days in a low-security facility. Meanwhile, the firefighter is still dead. Yesterday a FL county ran a pretest of its DIEBOLD voting system. The test was cancelled as the server malfunctioned.

The story is the hurricanes caused electric outages which made the server overheat.

I haven't figured out why a server would be left on when not being used.

I work with all kinds of servers, from the tiny to the extra large. Servers are always kept on, so that is no shock. What IS a shock is that it would be kept on in a data center that isn't keeping cool. The first thing that a sysadmin does when a data center loses A/C (and it happens alot, sadly) is shut off servers to keep them from overheating.

I think Florida is so far in the bag, with Diebold and Jeb and Kathryn Harris, that we have to focus on how Kerry can win without Florida.

What I want to know is what recourse these voters who have had their registration forms destroyed have?

In texas, you have to be deputized to take registrations, and you have to give voters a receipt. And if they show up with a receipt at the polls and they're not on the voter rolls, they HAVE to let you vote.

Also, as a deputy, I'm required to take registrations from EVERYONE, not just people I think will vote for Kerry.

I want to see these fuckers do jail time.

SD voter suppresion is just a tip of the iceberg.

FL - Wash post front page top headline story on black voter suppression.
OR - State Atty General and SecSTate announced investigation on voter registration fraud. They have a video tape of a worker tearing up dem registration papers and sworn testimony of workers they were told to throw away Dem voter registration forms (illegal).

Nevada - local papers and TV on destroying dem voter reg papers. Speaker of the house (Dem) and other Dem leaders taking up the issue.
PA and WV also reporting similar activities. They are tied to one Nathan Sproul, an AZ repub operative and dirty trickster. His firm hires local people to pass out voter reg forms in different states and registers REpubs only by throwing out Dem registrations (illegal, of course).

This is breaking out in the last couple of days. DKOS diarists are digging this up and connecting the dots from different states. Will be a huge story when the networks and big papers get on it. Even if national papers don't, the state papers and TV in the afffected states are getting into it. Local activists working with
media.
This can turn Nevada to blue and OR has already turned blue.

unfortunately, this is not true. america votes is a non-partisan voter registration firm. the firm in question is actually a group called sproul and associates, headed by the former chief of the arizona republican party, former advisor to john kyl, former head of the arizona christian coalition, nathan sproul. sproul and associates has been misreprestenting themselves as america votes in order to:

1. hire employees through internet jobs sites such as careerbuilder.com or temp agencies such as kelly services

2. gain access to locations where they can solicit new registrants, such as libraries, malls, etc.

Let's review the facts:

Kerry, pre-9/11, realized that terrorism and terrorists organizations, financed by the idle rich and not serving directly rogue states, was an emerging threat and must be dealt with immediately.

BushCO, after we were attacked by a stateless cartel of terrorsts on 9/11 (Afghanistan was sheltering them to be sure, but Al Qaeda was not a client organization of Afghanistan), still sees terrorism as a tool of rogue states and terrorists as some sort of rogue state army.

And they say that Kerry is wrong on how to deal with terrorism and make fun of his statement that he doesn't see much having changed with 9/11 -- when Kerry understood the threat of terrorism before 9/11 and BushCO still doesn't get it?

The tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist in me says the real reason BushCO is so afraid of Kerry and willfully misunderstands the terrorist threat is that by shutting off the financing of terrorism, Kerry's plans would also shut down money laundering tools used by BushCO.

At the very least, considering that terrorists, by definition, want to terrorize us, doesn't viewing 9/11 as such a paradigm shifting event grant the terrorists a victory?

I mean isn't Kerry's infamous "nuissance" quote, when translated from 'New England Brahmanese' into 'New York Old Money' "the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself"? To me, getting to the point where we are no longer terrorized by terrorism is precisely the point at which we can declare victory in the war on terror!

If people are so stupid as to fall for BushCO's "everything is different after 9/11" line of Santorum, perhaps they deserve to live in a once great country being sucked down the drain by the military industrial complex. But they should know that when our great Republic collapses, it is their fault!

there's also a story in the portland state university Daily Vanguard (in oregon) about petitioners solciting petition signiatures from PSU students, then re-registering them as republicans. this is not nearly as bad in the general election as it would be in the primary, but it's still sleazy and underhanded, which is to say it is explicitly republican.

unfortunately, sproul and associates has been operating in a number of states, so it is not limited to las vegas. there are reports of similar problems up in reno, nevada. it's also happening in missouri, west virginia, pennsylvania and oregon. it may be occuring in other states as well. these fuckers have no integrity. there is no end to their depravity. there is no floor they will not sink beneath. they are amoral, and, quite offensively, they adopt a moralist posture. they deserve the worst punishment karma can inflict.

Oregon Librarian Thwarts Voter-Registration Fraud
A librarian in Medford, Oregon, uncovered in September the real identity of a group claiming to be part of a nonpartisan, nationwide voter-registration organization called America Votes. The group had called and sent letters to several libraries in Oregon, including Multnomah County, West Slope, and Corvallis-Benton County.

Meghan O’Flaherty, library manager of the Jackson County Headquarters Library, checked into a letter from a group called Sproul & Associates asking to set up a voter-registration booth in the library. The letter began: “Our firm has been contracted to help coordinate a national non-partisan voter registration drive, America Votes! in several states across the nation.” Checking the Internet, O’Flaherty found that Sproul & Associates is a political consulting firm headed by former Arizona State Republican Party Executive Director Nathan Sproul.

An employee at Sproul & Associates said the group’s drive is called Project America Votes and admitted to knowing about the similar names. Claiming an innocent mistake, Sproul said in the September 21 Medford Mail Tribune, “We were not trying to copy their name. All we were trying to do was register people to vote. You telling me that they even exist was really the first time I’d heard it.”

O’Flaherty contacted Kevin Looper, the state organizing director for America Votes, who told her that Sproul & Associates had absolutely nothing to do with his organization. “You’ll have to forgive me for not finding it credible that they would not have heard of a group that is one of the largest in the country.” He also said that America Votes is “in the process of pursuing all of our legal options to pursue [an order to] cease and desist.”

Looper credits O’Flaherty’s and other Oregon librarians’ quick thinking in the matter: “If it wasn’t for their initiative on it, I would not have known about it.”

anyone read Myth of the Liberal Media-A. Huffington. explains a lot as to why we are not hearing about any of these MAJOR stories. I guess the GOP learned one thing after Nixon...control the media. I still believe that the truth will come out, but sometimes that belief starts to dim. This president and his entire administration should have been taken out of office so long ago. One of the front men for the de-registration in Las Vegas had the audacity I would've said balls but new and improved Repubes have the screw on type, to appear grinning in the area of town not shown on the Las Vegas propaganda shows (CSI Casino Dr Vegas) a lower income minority area Black and Latino that the rat rapers know is heavily Democratic. There at the new city government complex on the corner of Carey and Martin L. King beneath a badly done statue of Dr. King the egotist smirked and gurgled how his outfit was just keeping the voter rolls legit. Yeech. Las Vegas is a small town on steroids with a redlight district that calls the shots. Most Dems and Repubes politicians check in with the casino bosses to see if any of their legislation will hurt their bottomline or enhance it. So that mix of corruption,political complaisance and stupidity allows shit like this to happen on a regular basis with little more than winks and handslaps if you're in the right group banishment if it's just too damn blatant.

Incidentally, it was Sproul's company that was working so hard to obtain questioned signatures for Nader for the AZ ballot - and it was his efforts that caused that petition to be thrown out. Not only is he a little whirl of energy, he's also, unquestionably, damned incompetent.

Last night on PBS Frontline showed us that Bush doesn't have the capacity to care about anyone in this country. He doesn't even give a crap about his rightwing christian base. All he has to do is pretend to be born again and he can count on them for votes.
It has become obvious to all of us that Bushco is not really a part of a political party, but a vicious criminal enterprise. They bring nothing to the table but manipulation, strong arm tactics, and lies.

IIRC at some point in the 90s, Viacom (owner of CBS) bought Blockbuster, but Blockbuster was losing money so I believe they either sold it two or three years ago or else spun it off into a separate company because it was dragging down the Viacom bottom line. I don't know what the relationship of Blockbuster and Viacom is at the moment.

A few months ago after our Repub governor came out with a multiculturism is crap statement, Schaefer piped in with a complaint that the counter person at his McDonalds didn't speak english and that the food bad had words in every language but english on it.

So true, my husband and I were watching the news last night, and most of it was old news to me. My husband hadn't heard anything about most of it, even though he spends a great deal of time on the off-topic board, much of it politics, of a sports website. Naturally, I had to fill him in since the cable TV news was weak at best.

Matthews mentioned the Sinclair thing on Hardball last night, and that organizers on the internet have gotten some results in having Sinclair's sponsors drop.

Enjoy the freedom - I doubt it lasts if Blinky the Chimp is re-elected - his gang will find someway to shut down or seriously restrict the blogs.

for what it's worth, my take is that Rethugs can justify cheating because this is a war. It's a war for the hearts and soul of America, or in their warped heads, for the heart and soul of what they believe America has to be. And when you're at war, there are different rules. It's okay to kill, lie, cheat, sneak, and steal if the cause is justified. I don't agree with them, but from some recent conversations I've had with coworkers and family, I think that attitude is commonplace. I'm not saying they are all willing to do it, but that they can turn a blind eye to it.
