It's pretty obvious CNN's gotten it's marching orders from Unka Karl. Just saw a segment on the faux "outrage" on Dobbs, where they managed to show Edwards talking to Lord Vader about his daughter during their debate - and then "forgot" to include Cheney's complimentary reply.

CNN reaches a new low in ridiculous polls. Too bad they don't do any real news. Maybe if they wee a news organization they would interview Human Rights Campaign President Cheryl Jacques.

Sorry to be OT right at the beginning, but Kos has a link to the letter from Ed Gillespie, Chairman of the RNC, to Rock the Vote, threatening RTV over the political content of their ads. Jimmy Hoffa would have been more subtle, but whatever. Also a link to RTV's reply, which basically told Gillespie to go fuck himself.
Here's the RNC's fax number in DC if anyone wants to add their 2 cents:
(202) 863-8774.
This is a war for the future of this country and the GOP is the enemy.

A secluded honeymoon cruise in the Caribbean for newlyweds Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren got unexpectedly crowded when armed officers of the Coast Guard boarded the couple's new mega-yacht Privacy.
Coast Guard officials say the yacht, reportedly a wedding gift from the champion golfer, ran afoul of a law intended to ensure U.S. homeland security.

Mary Cheney is what? 30 years old?
They're talking about her as if she's a child.
What's more, remember the media's spate of articles about Gephardt's daughter before the Iowa primary?
This is the same media that's buying into Cheney's faux outrage.

It was a wonderful piece of stage craft on Kerry's part. He's so dull, no one recognizes his subtlety---remind the base that Bush to whom Bush was pandering that there's a big ole lesbian in the campaign and that Dick, Lynne, and perhaps Shrub are a wee bit hypocritical about the whole business. And just say, you notice that Dick & Lynne care about their daughters just like you do. The "justification" rejoinder he gave is both short & sweet.

OK, fine, if they run with it, we can too.
Dear (Talking head at CNN),
Why all the gnashing of teeth over John Kerry's mention of Cheney's daughter?
Kerry's point was that people who are gay or lesbian are God's children too.
The only "outrage" about it would seem to be that of nominal "conservatives" who think that mention of someone's sexual orientation is a horrible thing, to be closeted away.
The outrage professed by the Cheneys is really only thinly veiled homophobia.
If Mr. and Mrs. Cheney weren't secretly ashamed of their daughter, Senator Kerry's remark would have gone unnoticed.
Why is it OK for Alan Keyes, congressional candidate for Illinois, to call Lynne Cheney a "selfish hedonist" but somehow not OK for Mr. Kerry to call her "a child of God"?
The Hypocrisy of this administration is mind boggling, and I fear CNN, among others has simply accepted it at face value.
This surely represents the sad state our fourth estate has fallen into.
People used to expect better from CNN, I guess they won't make that mistake much longer.
Sincerely,
Xxxxx Xxxxxxx

Thanks for the poll link. I also voted Fuck No.
With a little luck, we can get the media to say "Cheney's gay daughter" a few thousand more times and really drive down the evangelical vote.
I for one would like to see an extensive investigative piece on whether Cheney's gay daughter is gay because of biology or bad parenting by the Cheney family. President Bush said he "did not know" why.

Where was the outrage when Alan Keyes said that Mary was hedonistic?
Well, the National media didn't do much/anything with it, but it was Big in Illinois. There were plenty of quotes from GOP bigwigs (like Big Jim Thompson) in reaction to Keyes' belchings. It was after those, that his numbers in the Senate race went from low to minute.

Like Bush said, "I know that." I know all about Lynne Cheney's lesbian novel. I just happen to like the fact that Atrios posted the cover of the book, with a conjoining photo of Lynne doing "hard work."
Kind of an oxymoron if when referring to lesbian sex, but still...Bush leaves a trail of fertile ground from which to choose your slogan.

"latent homosexual mother "
Ah, so it's not just me that wondered about Lynne. Homosexuality seems to be at least partly genetic --jury is still out on whether environment contributes at all, last I heard. And like anything else genetic, I wondered if Mary's preference came from a parent.....

thanks for the link, atrios.
And folks, get ahold of the Des Moines rally video-catch it on re-runs or watch the stream from Cspan website.
It's a great rally. He made me cry, damn him! He is alive and ebullient and ON.
"That all ya got, Mr. President?"
must see tv!
also, Teresa talking about the quiet growing sense of "tangible joy" they can feel from the American people.

Been wondering ever since this "outrage" started, if anyone was asking what Mary thought. Not about what Kerry said, but about what her parents were saying.
Obviously even children, even adult children, are but pawns in the power struggle. Somebody remind me, did Clinton ever use Chelsea for such naked political purposes?

Lynn Cheney is in denial about her daughters sexual preference. She flipped out and made that statement last night. The RNC decided to just go with it, and that is how we got to this point. Mary Cheney is a lesbian who has used her homosexuality as a spring board in her career. She was a liason for Coors with the gay community for them. That is a person who is confortable in her own skin. Shame on you Lynn Cheney, your insecurities are running amock!

I'm frankly pissed and outraged that Mrs. GFY could get away with saying that Kerry is "not a good man." Twice!I mean, think about that. If the situation were reversed, they'd be feasting like hyenas on EE. Not a good man? A decorated war hero? A lifetime of service to his country and he's not a good man? As opposed to her war-profiteer, pussy-ass, racist-voting, lying sack of shit husband? Fuck her.

What's perhaps most hilarious about all of this is how incoherent the charge against Kerry is. Take the CNN poll, for instance. It asks if Kerry "went too far" in mentioning Mary Cheney's sexual orientation. What the hell does "went too far" mean in this context?

Do you think Lynne Cheney went too far when she publicly humiliated her own daughter at a campaign rally just for being a lesbian?

Thank God, it looks like this thing is just going to be a sideshow.
The Wurlitzer has been so mighty in the past that when it roars to life, my first inclination is to scream and run for cover.
But I think I have come to the conclusion that this time they are grasping at straws.
There are no real legs on this thing.
It will be gone by Sunday, when the weekend pundits all kick it around for a few minutes. They will conclude that it was a misstep on Kerry's part, but not sufficient to stop his momentum.
Unless something else big happens in Iraq, like that inside-the-Green-Zone bombing. They do seem to be flattenimg Fallujah again right now. Could be some fallout from that.
In that case, Lesbiangate will not even get mentioned.
The writing is on the wall, unless they pull Osama out of their ass in the next two weeks.
They will probably pull Zarqawi out instead, as a sort of surrogate Osama. They have certainly been building him up long enough.
But I don't think that will be sufficient to change people's minds at this point.
Of course, they could get pretty ugly when they're cornered like this.
The stake is not through their hearts yet.
It's going to be a pretty interesting three weeks.

From a Time's piece about the fake outrage.
"Not so, a senior Democratic adviser shot back on CNN. The adviser, Howard Wolfson, said Republicans were simply trying to stir a tempest because there was nothing else to say about the debate in Tempe, Ariz., ``other than that their candidate lost.''
That is so true. If these media whores keep it up e-mail them and ask them why they are not talking about real issues that affect Americans like the war, jobs, and health care. The Republicans are desparate and need away to push pubic attention away from their tired, old, confused President.
Why are the Cheney's ashamed of their daughter?

Dave Cullen:
You're absolutely right. That is what the poll should say. But that's the way it's been during this campaign: always questioning Kerry, rarely Bush.
As is often pointed out, headlines should be screaming how much trouble Bush the incument president is in...but how many say that, vs. how many trumpet some negative about Kerry's campaign?
It's ridiculous.
I liked your piece. Glad you wrote it. Send it to Wolf Blitzer, ok?

It asks if Kerry "went too far" in mentioning Mary Cheney's sexual orientation.
That's really funny. So if he just said "lez," that would have been OK?
Maybe the problem WAS with the word "lesbian." Instead of "gay." Maybe it's the word itself that is causing such hemorrhaging... "Gay" sounds so happy and innocuous and Martin Luther King'y. Whereas "lesbian" sounds so mean and man-hating and Malcolm X'ish.

Dave Cullen gets it exactly right. Its basically what even an conservative like Andrew Sullivan has been saying. What is outrageous is that the Cheneys shake hand with people every day who think that her daughter is sinful slime. What is outrageous is that the Cheneys are willing to create less choices in their own daughter's life in order to remain in power. What is outrageous is that they feel shame about who she is, so that any mention of it in public puts them into a tail spin.
I think I am just as frustrated with the moderates in our own party who don't get this

In the dispute over Kerry's so-called "outing" of Mary Cheney, Kerry's defenders are missing the point. The Salon article sums it up at a personal level by contending that Lynne Cheney is embarassed that her daughter is gay. No doubt she is, but Salon misses the larger issue here.
Kerry has the temerity to state that the religious right is wrong. Kerry has challenged the right-wing conviction that gays are made, not born. And he uses Cheney's very own daughter as an example -- no wonder Cheney and his wife were mad. They really were hoping, I suppose, that no one would notice that Mary Cheney's very existence proves that one of the most heartfelt beliefs of their electoral base is wrong, wrong, wrong. No wonder the family keeps her under wraps at events like the convention.
Only if you believe, as the religious right do, that being gay is a "lifestyle choice" can you justify the hatefest of discrimination against gays which stains American public discourse and policies.
If America accepts that Kerry is correct, that gays are born not made, then discriminating against gays is no more justifiable than discriminating against blacks, or against people in wheelchairs -- and then, it's bye bye constitutional ammendment, bye bye workplace discrimination, bye bye sodomy laws, hello gay marriage.
And of course, it appears to be an Article of Faith for Republicans that they DARE NOT demonstrate any actual leadership toward educating or changing public opinion, but instead MUST pander to the beliefs of their base at all times, however hateful and misguided they are.

Just got into an argument on this on another board with some right wing dingbat and got completely infuriated. Its the disingenousness of their arguments. It really comes down to the fact that they are homophobic pigs. Someone give me a valium. Really I suck at these political arguments because I get too angry.
Cathie, I agree with you completely by the way, which is the extra layer to this whole issue. Kerry used a living human example to explode thier dogma..and an example they couldn't ignore.

Kerry must not get suckered into apologizing. If asked about the issue he should say "No one was truly offended by my statement. It was inoffensive. They're feigning offense to distract from the real issues. The Bush/Cheney campaign are the ones trying to deny gay Americans their rights with the anti-gay marriage amendment. If anyone should be apologizing it should be them."

Humour is the main thing they repugs don't have, so.........
At a press conference today, Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of Democratic Presidential nominee John Kerry, announced that she's going to be on the campaign trail with her husband!
"To prepare myself," she said, "I have shaved off all my pubic hair. From now until the election, I shall sit on the stage with John, and may occasionally flash my legs apart without wearing any panties. This will send a strong message to America." "Just what is that message, Mrs. Kerry?" gasped astonished reporters at the news of this rather startling announcement.
To which Teresa replied,
"READ MY LIPS, NO MORE BUSH!"

You and I saw the same thing. The Mary Cheney crap is an excuse for the other side to cover up that Bush royally pissed off his religious right base with his answer that he "didn't know" if homosexuality was a "choice". If they can divert attention to Mary being "abused", they don't have to address the concern that GWB was a human being for a couple of minutes.

I keep wondering what will it take for the scales to fall from the eyes of the 50% of America that thinks Bushboy & Cheneychins are "leadership" material?
Their incompetence is monumental as Iraq, the deficits, the job losses and the deteriorating environment attest.
Their deceit is legendary as the Swiftboat Liars and Sinclair Broadcasting Group demonstrate.
And after three debates in which Bushboy appeared like a juvenile school boy who hadn't done his homework and kept saying "nah na nah na!" to virtually every question and trying to toss insults by calling Kerry a "liberal," you have to wonder how gullible or ignorant are those Americans who still want to vote for these fools???????
The greatest threat to America is the rampant stupidity of half the country!!!

Lynne Cheney is undoubtedly seething because all she really wants to do is rip her own bodice, expose her spectacular boobs (to paraphrase Loofah Man) and scream "GIVE ME THE SAPPHIC BLISS MARY HAS!"
And just the idea of Dick sporting wood is enough to make me consider switching teams. Almost as bad as O'Reilly's felafel. Batter up!
Okay, I'm going to retch up my morning coffee now.

"The greatest threat to America is the rampant stupidity of half the country!!!"
Speaking as a teacher, I have to agree that small part of the electorate has low intelligence, and another small part is made up of lazy-minded persons who are easily used and caught up in emotional movements. In my opinion, our job is to help those persons, throughout their lives, see what they can do to help themselves and to make a better world.

I keep wondering what will it take for the scales to fall from the eyes of the 50% of America that thinks Bushboy & Cheneychins are "leadership" material?
I blame TV for it. TV and the fact that a large percentage of Americans spend at least several hours of their lives sunk into fiction of one form or another. I had a friend with a doctorate in physiology and another in psychology who said to me, " I don't ever read non-fiction,". Can you imagaine an educated person who reads 1. Professional literature 2. Story books.
People in the United States have to be coaxed back into reality before they get slapped in the face with a depression or pandemic. They've got to get used to thinking about real life in realistic terms instead of make believe life structured by fiction writers. If they aren't weaned onto real life the potential for it to turn really ugly really fast is very high.
And fiction isn't what it used to be either. Violence and irresponsible sex might be easy devices to make a plot with but they don't teach people much about life. Besides real life provide much more interesting examples of both along with fastinating narratives that no writer would dare make up.
Fiction should be for dessert not the whole meal.

This is puny, but I would be very grateful to see the numbers turn on the exact same poll, same "went too far" wording, in the St. Petersburg Times. Presently it's 71% "yes, Kerry went too far" with 1030 votes.
There's also a very nice letter to the editor there this morning from an IT professional who laments that Bush's solution for his six-figure job having been outsourced to India is for him to go back to community college. Ba-ZING!

For those of us who can't read the Salon article, this from Amazon customer reviews:
it's refreshing to see a potential first lady such as Lynne Cheney create a novel sure to please everyone from fun loving fundamentalist Christians to plaid flannel dykes, from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine.
Sure, Lynne is married to handsome, virile and dashing Dick Cheney, but even wonderful Dick can get tedious at times.
Lynne proves that even the cutest red dress wearing Republican lady craves a little gal on gal action at times- and as long as the gals don't want to get married- who's to mind?
Lynne's book was said to inspire her daughter Mary to sing a favorite childhood song: "I want a girl just like the girl that married dear old dad."
Okay wait, this is a book about lesbians written by the 2nd lady of the United States whose husband is embarrassed by his lesbian daughter and whose boss is a homophobe. LOL, LOL, LOL, oh my God I can't control my laughter!
And those are only the two of the twenty-eight reviews I've to time to read before my 9:30 appointment.

"The greatest threat to America is the rampant stupidity of half the country!!!"
Why do you think Bush appeals to so many people? Here's a man as stupid as they are, who cares as little about his fellow man as they do, who is more interested in his five-iron than the nine-to-fivers, who is, essentially, a reflection of themselves. Monkey see, monkey do.
Or monkey doo-doo. Whatever.

First, as a married woman I have to say that Kerry was not rude.
I have a different take on whether homosexuality is a choice.
If you believe like I do, that sexual orientation is not straight or gay, but a continuum, there are many who have made a choice as to whether they identify with either gay or straight or neither. Sometimes it's just a matter of who you happen to love, happens to be of the same sex or not. Sometimes it's because you'd rather not be vilified as a "spawn of Satan".
I also accept that there are people at either end of the scale who can't imagine being gay, if they are straight or straight, if they are gay.
For them there is absolutely no question, you are born that way.
Bush said he didn't know.
What does this tell you?
George, like many in the middle, has thought about the choice and chosen to be straight.
I wonder sometimes where on the continuum his own orientation is. His problem (and Lynne's) is that he can't forgive himself for even thinking about going the other way, let alone any escapades he might have indulged in when he was a cokehead.
All the gay bashing is an attempt to shut out the demon urges that give them tingles when they encounter someone of the same sex who turns them on.
If it's a sign of moral turpitude to indulge in a gay lifestyle, why would God not protect them from such shameful feelings? (sarcasm)
I'm glad we have places in the world where you can choose.
I wish we lived in a world where it was a total non issue.
BTW I live in Ontario Canada where we have full LEGAL marriages for same sex couples.
As a PS, Cheney's other daughter is on CNN, saying it was offensive to mention Mary's sexuality. (She said child of the VP, as if she was 6) She was asked point blank if Mary was offended. And she ducked the question. ("Let me just leave at that - that is was offensive.")To me that says that Mary was not in fact offended. That's why they won't let her speak.

H20 Cooler Talk - It's all about Mary
by flavorflav12
You're gonna hear this alot: "I can't believe Kerry said that about Mary Cheney, can you?" Or something like that. Here are some ways to neutralize this discussion while benefitting the overall Kerry campaign meme.
(1) "I know! I guess the Republicans just don't know how to take a complement!"
(2) "No, but I did hear that 10 more soldiers died this week in Iraq." (my personal favorite)
(3) "Yes, and did you hear what the President said? He said Mary Cheney should have fewer rights than me and you... unless, of course... are you gay too?"
(4) "You know what? I think it took Mary Cheney as much courage to come out of the closet publicly as it took John Kerry to face bullets in Vietnam. And I bet he admires that in her. In fact, I know he does, cause he said so at the debate!"
(5) "If you're gonna tell me you're offended... let me tell you something, at least John Kerry didn't lie about her war record and denigrate her service to the country. He simply stated something Dick Cheney already told us, and he complemented her for it."
(6) "Mary Cheney? Isn't she Dick Cheney's Lesbian daughter?"
(7) "I didn't watch the debates because I was busy trying to figure out how to pay for the increase in my medical insurance."
( "I sure CAN believe John Kerry would point out that Mary Cheney is a person, who didn't choose to be gay just to piss off her dad, but is gay because she was born that way. And if Lynn Cheney has a problem with that, she has a serious problem."
(9) "So what's so bad about being a lesbian?"
(10) "Abso-fucking-lutely. It's about time we had a president who isn't afraid to be politically incorrect! It's about time we had someone who'll call a spade a spade, a liar a liar, a tax cut for the rich a tax cut for the rich, and a lesbian a lesbian!"

I should clarify what I wrote.
I wrote: "George, like many in the middle, has thought about the choice and chosen to be straight."
I should have written George has chosen a straight lifestyle.
At least in public. I have no idea what he does in private. Nor would I want to know.
We had a prime minister who said that the government didn't belong in the bedrooms of the nation. I concur.

Why was it okay for Alan Keyes to trash Mary and called her a "selfish hedonist" (and Keyes should talk since his own daughter is gay) but it's not okay for Kerry to be nice about Mary's orientation?
These Republicans make no sense at all! They have everything backwards - i.e. sex is bad, war is good.
