this cheney thing makes me so mad - she's a 30 something woman - not a little girl. She worked for Coors as the GLBT liasion - it was good enough to be out as long as she was selling the soul of the gay community to a corporation and making big bucks - I'm sure.
Spare me the drama and the outrage. It suites them when they can cash in on it but how dare anyone mention she's gay if it hurts thier campaign.

This is extremely serious and urgent. Everyone must do whatever they can to expose this, help the Ohio Democratic party, and contact the DNC and the Kerry campaign -- immediately! This could literally swing the election!
The Lucas County Democratic Headquarters was burglarized overnight, and three computers, including the party's main system, were stolen.
The computers contained highly sensitive information, including the party's financial information, names and personal phone numbers of hundreds of party members, candidates, and volunteers.
The computers also stored e-mails from candidates that included discussion about campaign strategy.
A second computer, belonging to an attorney-volunteer working to ensure voters' rights, also was taken, officials said. The headquarters on 1817 Madison Avenue does have an alarm system that volunteers believed they set late Monday when they left."

Ed- I totally agree about Olbermann. I watched him for the 1st time last night (I try to stay away from cable news) and he is FABULOUS! I dropped him an email to tell him so, too.
OTOH, Tweety was just off his rocker while interviewing those people in Iowa. Does he EVER let someone finish a sentence? Seriously, I don't know.

The Cheney thing made it on the front page of the LA Times, but below the fold. Leading story and pic was the suicide bombings in the Green zone. The Cheney article was pretty fair. Also, didn't hear a word about it on NPR on my way to work. So not sure how long this will play out. Some folks are making the point that it's the Cheneys who are actually looking like the ones who are trying to make political hay over it. I think it would serve both parties to drop it as it cuts both ways. How is it playing in the local media in your communities? Please share. Thanks

"And I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was. She's being who she was born as. I think if you talk to anybody, it's not a choice."
(cue outrage)
"The essence of ... family life remains procreation. If we embrace homosexuality as a proper basis for marriage, we are saying that it's possible to have a marriage state that in principal excludes procreation and is based simply on the premise of selfish hedonism." Asked whether that meant Mary Cheney "is a selfish hedonist," Keyes said: "That goes by definition. Of course she is."

Yep, they were out in Austin last Monday, but by Wednesday they had a new stock in and they called me at home to let me know.
How far will the media take this Mary Cheney nonsense? Well, here is the most ridiculous thing i've seen about it so far from Phil Boas at the Arizona Central:
"I think the press room probably gasped because (forgive my cheap and tawdry simile) it was a little like that second plane hitting the Twin Towers. The first could have been an accident. The second was a calculated attack."
That's right he just compared Kerry's saying that Mary Cheney is a lesbian with the attacks of 9/11. Incredible!

This is what I sent to MSNBC, which is eliciting comments:
Considering that Mary Cheney is an adult, has been out for many years, worked as a GLBT liaison for Coors, and has been recognized by her father proudly at HRC (gay rights association) events, it seems to me that the only thing the Bush-Cheney team is worried about is losing the anti-gay vote.

Most polling, including Zogby, are based on likely voters...not registered voters.
We will kick ass come Nov. 2.
But don't let up the fight for media coverage!

'Radical'. Almost as overused as 'liberal'

In NM the ABQ Journal, which I consider a right-wing rag, has buried it on the 6th page, below the fold and only one column wide.
At first I was pissed it was in there, but reflecting on what David in Redondo Beach is saying, I think that my right-wing rag is somewhat embarrassed at the whole thing. They'd rather not let any reference to homosexuality appear.

There's an essay on Slate http://www.slate.com/id/2108210/
about the way W. throws around "Massachusetts" as a slur that points to something that's been driving me crazy for a while -- although it's really only the essay's subtitle that makes the point in any emphatic way. Since when is it okay for the President of the United States to sneer at a state in the union that he's supposed to represent? And how can a person who once claimed to be a "uniter" not be called on this?
What annoys me most is that the administration makes ridiculous claims about Kerry disrespecting coalition members and so on, when Kerry is in fact making statements in the service of legitimate political points. W., meanwhile, kicks around "Massachusetts" purely as a slur, and no one says a word. Seriously, it's a friggin' state. It really is worth a little outrage.

Well, what have y'all done to fight the right wing noise chamber today? Don't just bitch on Atrios, write a letter to CNN, MSNBC or your local paper pointing out how the Cheney flap is another pointless Republican attack to try to divert our attention from Miserable Failure's record.
The right wing has been doing this for 20 years. We need to form a vicious liberal lobby to ferociously counter the Republican squawking about nothing.

Good point. Go to pollingreport.com and you'll see the comparison between polls of likely voters and registered voters. There's a prety big difference.

PLEASE send turkee Stan Matsunaka's way! I've given all I can to him and I'll be standing on streetcorners (in hostile territory) waving signs for him. But he needs mo' money--the attack ads from Colorado Families First (or whatever they are) are great, but Stan really needs to get on the air with positive pro-Stan ads. It's not enough to paint Marilyn as the wacko she is.
And she really, really is. At a recent radio debate with Stan, he spent his closing remarks talking about what he wanted to do for Colorado. She spent hers talking about how right Bush was on everything--not a damn word about what her constituents can expect from her, not a word about what she has done for her constituents. Nothing.
PLEASE help us get rid of this moron!

I predict that this story has no legs and will die quickly.

Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo has more on GOP dirty tricks... seems that they went to the old Rove playbook of producing flyers that are supposedly distributed by the Dems.
It seems that a 'dem' flyer in Tennessee comparing W to the 'retarded' was actually made by GOP criminals.

So why do homosexuals get their own lobby?
Is it in a different part of the building? Does it have a separate entrance?
I'll be the lobby decorations are nicer, too - they have all the interior designers.
I sure wouldn't want to go into the bathrooms in the homosexual lobby, unless only one person is allowed in at a time.

Can someone correct or fill me in on this? Wasn't Phil Crane, the idiot who Bean is running against in Illinois, involved in a sex scandal 20-30 years or so ago? He was being touted as a possible party leader, etc., then maybe something with an aide? Do I have this right or am I confusing him with another pre-Ryan Illinois Republican hypocrite?
His brother (Dan, IIRC) was the one with the sex scandal. He pushed family values (pictures of him with his family on campaign literature etc.), then had an affair with a Congressional page (female). When it came time to vote, precinct after precinct showed that many people voted Republican for all other offices, but did not cast a vote for Crane (or for his Democratic challenger). Crane lost.
Interestly, at the same time IIRC correctly Gerry Studds had an affair with a page (male). He went back to Congress. Of course he did not appear to be a hypocrite.

DINOs? Please!
I'm sure Bean has some positions that aren't directly in line with Kerry's. But guess what? I'm sure Phil Crane has far more. Unless it's Zell Miller, you're not better off with a Republican over a Democrat. And no matter the Democrat's views, they still bring us one seat closer to the majority. And anyone who thinks a moderate House Republican will stand on his/her own if need be, you don't know Tom DeLay very well.
It's like people saying Brad Carson is too conservative to be a real Democrat. Who gives a crap? Do you think we'd somehow be better off with even MORE conservative wingnut Coburn? It's not Bean vs. Ted Kennedy, it's Bean vs. Crane.
Finally, I have to agree with Musgrave's concern with the homosexual lobby. Frankly, I've been a number of hotels where the lobby was pushing for a radical agenda. Just the other day, I saw two homosexual lobbies going at it, knocking over chairs, tables, bellhops and everything else. This must be stopped.

Matt,
Yeah, the undercurrent that comes through in a lot of GOP rhetoric seems to be that some Americans aren't "real Americans," including the idea that certain states in the union aren't "real America." And I really don't even care that much if people running for state or local office play this game -- you just can't expect people to be totally above-it-all in politics, y'know? But when you're the president? Come on, you're supposed to represent all Americans.

OT brevity for football fans. Not sure if the New England Patriot's head coack, Bill Belichick is a Democrat, but in addressing the benching of WR Bethel Johnson last week, he seems to have culled his response from DNC Talking Points...
On the topic of a player's game-day status, Belichick said, "I think what affects a player's status is a couple of things. One is his performance. Another is what the overall strategy and game plan is. Those can vary. Again, for anybody, no matter what you are doing, if you can't recognize where there is a problem and address it, I don't know how it could possibly get improved."

And Kerry's comments upset Lynne Cheney?
Well, no, probably not. But she has to pretend to be upset so that she can get a video clip played on every tv channel in the country saying "[Kerry] is not a good man." This simultaneously allows her to slam the Senator while distracting from Bush's monumental screw ups.

Exactly, nascardaughter. I happen to be the daughter of two Texans, but was born in Massachusetts (Ft. Devons) due to the fact my father was stationed there for flight training immediately following the Cuban revolution.
So I'm a Taxachusetts librul, by way of the U.S. Army...

I daresay there are few NFL head coaches who are not conservative Republicans (Butch Davis in Cleveland is even more right wing); Mike Tice is moderate for a head coach, while the Baltimore head coach is somewhat more so. Joe Gibbs, Mike Ditka, John Elway, and Jim Kelly are all conservative Republicans.
Politically, you really don't run into many professional athletes and coaches who are not conservative. JC Watts and Jack Kemp are pretty typical; Bill Lee is not.

Not sure if the New England Patriot's head coack, Bill Belichick is a Democrat,
He is a conservative Republican who has appeared with Bush:

Samlex, around here (a small city in a big rural area) it is fairly easy to tell who is who, and the signs are actually appearing on lawns. Not too many strangers. I don't know if that's true elsewhere, although I would hope the county party leaders would have enough snap to wonder the same thing and do whatever they can to prevent it.
We don't give them away more than one or two at a time, and often we just deliver them and install them ourselves rather than having people come in and pick them up.

Not the issue. I don't doubt that Bean is probably better than Crane. If I lived in her district, I'd probably give her my vote. But we're not talking about that. We're talking about candidates for us to support from outside. It depends on the sport, too. There were lots of NBA players that supported Bill Bradley's run in 2000; Members of the US Women's Soccer team recently came out in support of Kerry.
On a side note, if you're looking for up-and-comers, Purdue QB and Heisman hopeful Kyle Orton is a poly-sci major, wants to someday become a senator, and is a self-described liberal.

I live in Bean's district and it's important to remember that it is a very conservative district. There are even people with signs for Keyes. So cut her a little slack. She has a good reputation with small business owners and is behind a lot of Kerry's economic proposals. Obama just released a lot of his volunteers to work for her.

Gary Kleppe: How many of those "250 or however many Democratic challengers" you reference have as good a shot at taking out Crane as does Bean? (Answer: None.)
Earlier this week former employees of Sproul & Associates (operating under the name Voters Outreach of America), a firm hired by the Republican National Committee to register voters, told a Nevada TV station that their supervisors systematically tore up Democratic registrations.
The accusations are backed by physical evidence and appear credible. Officials have begun a criminal investigation into reports of similar actions by Sproul in Oregon.
Republicans claim, of course, that they did nothing wrong - and that besides, Democrats do it, too. But there haven't been any comparably credible accusations against Democratic voter-registration organizations. And there is a pattern of Republican efforts to disenfranchise Democrats, by any means possible.
Read the whole thing. It's what should be on Page One of the NYT and leading every freaking newscast.

Sent this to a few news outlets covering the Mary Cheney "issue"...
It’s pretty hypocritical for the Republicans to claim foul regarding John Kerry’s reference to the Cheneys 1) openly gay daughter, who is 2) also a paid consultant/tool for her father’s re-election campaign. It seems that similar sentiments expressed by John Edwards were nothing more than “kind words” about two weeks ago. It also seems to me that Republican Alan Keyes recent statement that Mary Cheney is, by his definition of homosexual, a “selfish hedonist” should have caused righteous indignation within the Cheney family. But of course he’s a Republican, and perhaps more in line with the Cheneys vision of “family values.”
I think a much more relevant follow up story to the last presidential debate is Mr. Bush’s claim regarding John Kerry’s “exaggeration” of Mr. Bush’s diminished level of concern regarding Osama bin Laden. Not Mr. Bush’s words so much as his actions. Mr. Bush ignored bin Laden, who was responsible for the largest terrorist act ever committed against Americans, to attack Saddam Hussein, who had nothing to do with the terror attack of 9/11 and was incapable of threatening us.
People are dying in Iraq for no reason. Again. Today.
Bin Laden is free to attack America. Again. Today.
That is an issue worthy of analysis.

Konopelli,
I've done some volunteer work already this year. That will culminate with my delivery of viejitos and viejitas, who are in their 70s, 80s, and 90s, to the polls on election day. It's my own grass roots effort in my neighborhood.
Wish I could say yes, but I'm kinda tapped.

Yes, Krugman does the Lord's work.
And it's a sign of how seriously the NYT takes it, that they run 3 op-ed columns today.
But next week, Our Mr. Brooks will explain how this voter registration thingie just isn't important, because it doesn't affect sales of barbecue grills in the suburbs that he drives out to visit on sunny afternoons in blue America.

So everyone should just enjoy the butterflies, and stop listening to the mean men with their scary stories.

Go poll - MSNBC
"Who would you choose if the election was this week?"
The results seem to be all wrong.
Bush's base is severely agitated.
But with the stories of voter registration/vote fraud making the rounds, and the clear connections to the GOP, it's the Democractic and non-partisan base that's gonna be even moreagitated.
And like the saying goes, it's the agitator in the washing machine that gets the dirt out.

OT: I just sent out 10 nice, fat, juicy Sinclair Boycott emails, and made one call (Iams, the people were friendly, informative, and encouraged me to give my opinion).
I feel better, and am going to do more.
Does anyone know which site has the most comprehensive boycott coverage?
This whole thing requires continual pressure, not just for a day or two.
Yes, I know there was a Sinclair thread, but that was two threads ago and nobody's there now.

Atrios and friends, we need a real plan. What can Eschatonians do in the next several days, to deal with the Ohio situation, the ballot/registration problems, circulating of these kinds of scummy letters so that people know who the truly nasty people are, as opposed to Kerry, and the letters and calls to the media to keep them honest?
Seriously, we need concerted effort; fundraising's one way to go but there are others. I got emails today from two people in Ohio asking for media contacts. I think we specific jobs. And we have to make sure the trolls don't let us do all the work, then they use our information.Really.
I mention the media contacts because I heard Jack Cafferty on CNN this morning say (though he might have been reading a letter, I was in the other room) that what if obesity were a big issue, and someone mentioned Elizabeth Edwards? I almost fell off my chair. This came right on top of a reporter saying to me last night, well, what if someone brought up the Edwards' son, who was killed in a car crash, and brought that into the campaign? How is that different? (though I hate to keep talking about the Mary Cheney situation because it ignores the bigger issues). C'mon, even though we're Democrats, we need to organize.

i love the fact that Musgrave's letter assumed Stan Matsunaka would be ashamed of admitting he's for equal rights for all Americans. It just goes to show that among themselves, bigots like her are proud of their bigotry. We assume they'd be ashamed if it was put out in the open like that, but she wallows in it.
Another beauty, her co-sponsor was defeated...because of "RADICAL HOMOSEXUALS!" (not that any homosexual I know would use "radical!" unless it was for camp purposes). it never crosses her mind that the prick was beaten because he's a bigot. when you prove to the electorate at large you're a bigot, it gets harder (in some states) to get re-elected. funny huh?
apparently not in Pennsylvania though...

Thanks Smarty Jones, I found the info. I ran across an article showing that abortion has reversed and gone significantly up under Bush. It is quite revealing. Kerry should be mentioning this. I found that there were 1,429,247 abortions in 1990 and it decreased to 857,475 by 2000. Check out this article and see what our Pro-Life President has done to the abortion issue and why!

Musgrave says "The last sponsor of the amendment was defeated for re-election." Was he "defeated"? Or did he opt to not run for reelection because he's a hypocritical closet homosexual gay-hater?

Also from WSJ:
Retail sales excluding autos rose 0.6%, the largest increase since May's 0.9% advance; economists had expected this category to show a more modest 0.3% gain. Demand climbed for electronics and appliances, building materials, garden supplies and clothing. Gasoline-station sales inched up 0.1%.
"This month's breakout appears to be due more to special factors" such as a late Labor Day and hurricanes, wrote Steven Wood, chief economist at Insight Economics, in a note to clients. "[R]eal consumer spending accelerated sharply in the third quarter, contributing solidly to gross domestic product" growth, Mr. Wood said; but, he added: "beware of the fourth quarter."
So bad news could really hit after the election is over. Also, building materials contributed to the rise in sales - post hurricane, right?

In my town, Denton, TX (approx. pop. 80K; two universities)the Kerry signs appear to outnumber Bush signs about 4 to 1 and the same with the bumper stickers. My partner and I have two signs in our yard, our neighbor across the street has one and the only Bush sign on our street went up last week. Our signs have been since just after the Dem. Convention and we had a hard time getting any because the local Dem. office kept running out.
Kerry in a landslide! Yeah!

Gary Kleppe: How many of those "250 or however many Democratic challengers" you reference have as good a shot at taking out Crane as does Bean? (Answer: None.)
No feces, Sherlock. Of course Bean is the only one who can take out Crane.
However, many of them have quite good chances of taking out their own respective Republican opponents, who are generally as scummy as Crane is.

Honestly, is there anyone out there who remembers Dr. George Crane, father of Bean's opponent, and his "worry clinic" newspaper column?
My hometown paper in Ohio ran it for years, and, even allowing for changes in society mores over the years, his column in the 1960s and into the 1970s was loaded with alleged advice to couples, which really meant blaming women. He'd supposedly get questions about relationship problems from a reader; his advice invariably consisted of blaming the woman for the problem and suggesting it was all too often because the wife refused to provide enough "boudoir cheesecake."
I'm not kidding. You could look it up. And wasn't one of these Cranes--there are were least two brothers--picked up on morals charges back in the late 1970s or 1980s? Help me readers of smaller midwestern readers with a long memory.

It shows the immense desperation of the GOP that of all of the hustles they have used to assume power, only their hate party and suppress the vote hustles remain even remotely viable options. Bush is finished, through, but I hope this election has the additional benefit of forcing GOP cultists to take a good, long, hard look at their party and its severe unresponsiveness to the bulk of their voter constituents.

Local Democratic Offices! For pete's sake! Hire guards or get volunteers to stay all night. Take the laptops home with you in the evening. This is only going to get worse for the next couple of weeks. Let's not lose because we expected the other side to play fair and obey the law.

It's official, my beauties -Dallas County Texas Democratic campaign headquarters has run out of Kerry yard signs.
Tena
Here's one that'll blow your mind - Omaha (yes, the one in "dark red" Nebraska) ran out two days ago, even after they started charging $5 to defray costs of ordering more. A drive-through tally by the local paper showed a 4-1 Kerry:Bush sign ratio. Of course, since the World Herald is a Republican fishwrapper, they were careful to note that "yard signs don't vote" at least 3 times in the subtitle and body of the article.
Also, out of nowhere dem candidate Thompson's internals show her within 2 pts of Lee Terry, repug bush zombie incumbent.
Something real fishy in all those national poll numbers that seem to pop up whenever Kerry gets some momentum.

Something real fishy in all those national poll numbers that seem to pop up whenever Kerry gets some momentum.

Holden - the guy here told me to call back next week - said he might get more in, might not. I'm still trying to run down a couple of signs - the CWA had a bunch when I was at their headquarters doing training for being a poll watcher.
Guys, I've actually noticed that people are so determined to show support that they have been putting bumper stickers on wood and putting those out in their yards.
Kerry in a landslide, my sweet little bitches.
We're rocking and we're rolling.

I don't think the sign destroying has been as big a factor as one might think at first. For one thing, they are charging for yard signs - $6.00 per. I think they've decided to do that specifically to keep Repugs from getting all the signs and destroying them.

It depends on the sport, too. There were lots of NBA players that supported Bill Bradley's run in 2000.
Lots? There were a few standing up with a former teammate, but I don't think you will find a lot of NBA players standing up for the principles of liberalism. If anything, the typical NBA player is apolitical; Adonol Foyle is certainly liberal, but David Robinson is very conservative. Etan Thomas got a lot of crap for speaking out against the war. There are exceptions on both sides. obviously; Steve Nash and Josh Howard also spoke out against the war. But then you have the likes of Steve Alford, Randy Wittman and Jerry Sichting, former Indiana athletes and NBA players who are now coaches: they are all VERY conservative.
But you may be right in your general point. Football does bring out more conservatives, but perhaps that's because of the demographic of the players. I worked for three NFL teams and never encountered a liberal among the players; coaches are even more conservative.

Karl thinks he’s the most masterful manipulator in politics. Today, he is being proven wrong. The Bush controlled media wants us to believe there were no pivotal moments in the last debate but there were.
1. In the last debate one candidate quoted scripture and it wasn’t Bush.
2. The defense of marriage act was meant to be the “values” issue in this campaign and Karl thought he’d use it to pound Kerry. With the Mary Cheney references in the VP debate and the last Presidential debate, the “values” issue is lost for Karl. The media is off and running with the story and a Willy Horton is playing out against the Republicans by the Bush goon media.
3. 3 words will carry John Kerry into the White House, “Integrity, Integrity, Integrity.” Mentioning his mom sweetly before flashing a huge smile when talking about his wife grabbed the women’s vote.
4. Saying Bush was a good father and thanking the President at the end were the turning moments proving Kerry will go down in history as a perfect closer in a campaign. You don’t win in the beginning and the middle, you win in the end.

Dr. Black, how about more coverage of Baker's 1 Billion dollar Carlysle/Kuwait deal?
Naomi Klein has busted the story in The Nation, MSNBC has covered it, Dem Now has done a long interview with her on it, and it is so blatant that the entire base ought to be aware of it.

Radical Juden-agenda leaders have declared me Public Enemy #1 and are spending over a million dollars on vicious, false TV ads to defeat me.
I need your help.
You may know that I have been the National Socialist leader to protect traditional German marriage from the radical agenda of the Jewish lobby by sponsoring the Nuremberg Laws.
What you may not know is that the last sponsor of the Amendment was defeated for re-election, and now the bull's eye is on my back.
Leaders of the Jewish lobby know if they can take me out, no one will stand against them in the future.
I have no other choice but to ask for urgent help from pro-Final Solution Americans like you.
...
I’m also worried that if I don’t raise enough money for our ad campaign, I will be powerless to respond to these vicious attacks against me.
Unlike the Jewish lobbies’ ads, my ad campaign will be based on truth and compare my solid record to that of my opponent, liberal Democrat Stan Matsunaka
Stan Matsunaka fears the truth because he knows his record in the State Senate shows he supports Jewish inter-marriage and will promote it as a U.S. Congressman.
If we allow these vicious ads to go unanswered then Stan Matsunaka and the radical Jewish lobby could succeed by deceiving the voters, and win on Election Day.

Karl Rove put something in today's Detroit Free Press, a full-page rant imitating without accurately re-hashing or referencing various conspiracy theories both valid and laughable, from somebody named Dr Matthias Rath. Now, when Adbusters or Project Censored or Moore want an ad or a perfectly reasonable thing, even in the case of Moore rather a profitable thing, suddenly the all-powerful-Market is completely impotent and no amount of money will buy our plucky lefties a bit of air or paper. Since it is proven time and time again that it is not money, but acceptability plus money with a veto to articulate challenges to power, that determines who may buy space, Rath cannot really be a lefty (we know he is not articulate or someone who will reflect well on the Enemies of the Enemies of the People: his page ends with an amusing list of instructions to George Bush). Or he might be a crazy let in for effect, like Rove's homeless pawns.

How about we ask the Cheneys how they feel about Musgrave's campaign? Can we get Lynne on the record about how she feels about this hate-filled letter from a homophobe?? Let's have Lynne give us her thoughts on the "radical homosexual lobby."
Let me guess.. their office isn't on K Street.. it's about 4 blocks north in Dupont Circle....

Freep the online polls, they read them on the air. "Did Kerry go to far mentioning Mary Cheney?"
After almost thirty-five years it shouldn't come as no surprise that these bastards will win at all costs, it's been ingrained into their political culture. It needs to be expected than counterpunched, kicked, bitten cut, gouged until the gotdamn "normal" Republicans take back their party from the Repubes who seduced them into allowing the mercenaries, nutcases, Praise the Lord and sign the check crowd to get back into political dominance. As for the homosexual lobbies, what consenting lobbies do with each other is their business, I'm against the seduction of young dens and atriums.

Nascardaughter, Thanks for your eloquent defense of Massachusetts. We have thick skins. Historically, I think we have always been more interested in being right than in being popular. From the self-described "obnoxious and disliked" John Adams to Ted K, our Liberal Lion, we've never curried favor with our political enemies. But I have to wonder, what is it with tyrants named "George"?
We appreciate the support! And the GOP should keep in mind that without us, there never would have been a U.S.

Sunday Halloween Irks Some in Bible Belt
By KRISTEN WYATT, Associated Press Writer
NEWNAN, Ga. - Across the Bible Belt this Halloween, some little ghosts and goblins might get shooed away by the neighbors _ and some youngsters will not be allowed to go trick-or-treating at all _ because the holiday falls on a Sunday this year.
"It's a day for the good Lord, not for the devil," said Barbara Braswell, who plans to send her 4-year-old granddaughter Maliyah out trick-or-treating in a princess costume on Saturday instead.
Some towns around the country are decreeing that Halloween be celebrated on Saturday to avoid complaints from those who might be offended by the sight of demons and witches ringing their doorbell on the Sabbath. Others insist the holiday should be celebrated on Oct. 31 no matter what.
"Moving it, that's like celebrating Christmas a week early," said Veronica Wright, who bought a Power Rangers costume for her son in Newnan. "It's just a kid thing. It's not for real."
It is an especially sensitive issue for authorities in the Bible Belt across the South.
"You just don't do it on Sunday," said Sandra Hulsey of Greenville, Ga. "That's Christ's day. You go to church on Sunday, you don't go out and celebrate the devil. That'll confuse a child."
In Newnan, a suburb south of Atlanta, the City Council decided to go ahead with trick-or-treating on Sunday. In 1999, the last time Oct. 31 fell on a Sunday, the city moved up trick-or-treating to Saturday, which brought howls of protest.
"We don't need to confuse people with this," Councilman George Alexander said.
In Vestavia Hills, Ala., a suburb of Birmingham, a furor erupts every time Halloween falls on Sunday. Local officials decided not to take a stand this time.
"About 15 years ago, we decided to have Halloween on Saturday instead. People went crazy. We said, `Never again,'" recalled Starr Burbic, longtime secretary to the mayor. "It messed everybody up to move Halloween. Some people don't like having it on a Sunday, but we just couldn't find a way to make everyone happy."
The patchwork of trick-or-treat zones could work to children's advantage: Some might go out on both nights to get all the treats they can.
With so many towns split over when Halloween should be celebrated, many are going with a porch-light compromise: If people do not want trick-or-treaters, they simply turn off their lights, and parents are asked not to have kids knock there.
"Most people don't have a problem with it. It's a pretty universal compromise, so that's what we go with," said Grand Rapids, Mich., police Lt. Douglas Brinkley.

Douglas Brinkley.

freelove,
I think you've got it exactly right. The scripture quotes were 99% accurate, too, like someone who knows them pretty much by heart but hasn't studied them to memorize for this occasion. Recalling his dying mother's stirring words, and then smiling warmly as he pokes fun at himself over his beloved wife's great wealth (Some people say . . . I don't mind, I can take it ), absolutely charmed every woman who saw it.

Do NBA players even know or care about what's going on in the world?
Look at Alan Iverson....I mean, it's embarassing to listen to him speak. You need subtitles. Can he even read a paper?
I didn't think any of the NBA crowd cared about anything but their big salaries.

this cheney thing makes me so mad - she's a 30 something woman - not a little girl. She worked for Coors as the GLBT liasion - it was good enough to be out as long as she was selling the soul of the gay community to a corporation and making big bucks - I'm sure.
These Repugs are SO fucking desperate, it's pathetic.
When Alan Keyes badmouthed Mary, Dickhead said NOTHING. Had that been MY daughter, I would have gone Harry Truman on Keyes' ass!
John Kerry says something nice and they jump on him? They are so fucking ignorant and backwards!

I know a lot of women who fell in love with him when he talked about his mom in his convention speech.
He ain't Bill Clinton, but he'll do!
His having that marvelous, outspoken little woman as his wife doesn't hurt his cause either!

I received a taped phone message from dennis hastert calling me by the name of the previous owner of this house telling me not to vote for melissa bean.
Apparently, she is "bad for illinois" and will do everything possible to unseat hastert if elected. He also said that bean will raise my taxes, etc. I was furious that Hastert thought he could call this number and tell me how to vote! I emailed his office and got a reply stating he could not reply outside of his district! So don't call me, Denny. The next day I received a call from Phil Crane Headquarters again telling me that Melissa Bean will pretty much ruin my life. I am all for Bean. She has my vote.

Bill O'Reilly should be made to watch while Lynne Cheney and Ann Coulter re-enact the sex scenes from Lynne's novel Sisters.
By the way, here's a letter for y'all to adapt and send to your local papers:
In the third debate, John Kerry rightly praised and honored Dick and Lynne Cheney on the great job they did raising their adult daughter Mary, who happens to be an out lesbian who has worked with arch-conservative beer brewer Coors on outreach to the gay community. Yet, to hear the bizarre reaction of the Cheneys, you'd think he'd kicked them or something.
It's interesting how the Cheneys love it when right-wing Republican donors like Coors use her daughter to put a happy face on their anti-gay conservative agenda, but really hate it when a Democrat pays tribute to their loving and understanding stance towards their flesh and blood.
I think the Cheneys are shouting so loudly so that the news of nationwide Republican efforts at vote suppression are drowned out. Thank goodness that writers like Paul Krugman will report, as Krugman did on 10/15/04, on the Republicans' efforts to suppress our votes. (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/15/opinion/
15krugman.html?oref=login) This is much more important than a staged hissy fit.

One thing I learned from hanging around pro athletes is never to underestimate their intelligence. The Vikings' Matt Birk, for instance, graduated from Harvard, which puts him ahead of roughly 99 percent of the people posting here (including me). So let's be a little less condescending.

What I want to know is do the pugs need sex 101? Is it Lynn Cheney is mad because her base doesn't know what exactly her gay/lesbian/homosexual daughter does in bed with her significant other? Did they not understand why Cheney, a loving mother, allowed her daughter to be kept off the stage during their finest hour at the pug con? I thought that it might be a good thing if we all ran to all the pug sites and gave them lessons on what gay/lesbian/homesexual sex is like then they'd have a better understanding of the Cheny's outrage? Because the good lord alone knows that I don't. Whatcha think? Lol.

In GOP World, gays and lesbians are EVIL, so it's not possible to say anything too horrible about them, but calling someone gay/lesbian is the worst epithet imaginable.

I live in the district of Colorado where Stan Matsunaka is battling the forces of hatred and intolerance [otherwise known as "Marilyn Musgrave"]. Just wanted to say that I don't know of a single person who is voting, or at least will admit to be voting, for the forces of hatred and intolerance. And yet the polls say it's a very tight race. Where the hell are these people?!
