"Court: Terror War Can't Curtail Liberties"
ATLANTA - Fears of a terrorist attack are not sufficient reason for authorities to search people at a protest, a federal appeals court has ruled, saying Sept. 11 "cannot be the day liberty perished."
The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday that protesters may not be required to pass through metal detectors when they gather next month for a rally against a U.S. training academy for Latin American soldiers.
Authorities began using the metal detectors at the annual School of the Americas protest after the 2001 terrorist attacks, but the court found that practice to be unconstitutional.
"We cannot simply suspend or restrict civil liberties until the War of Terror is over, because the War on Terror is unlikely ever to be truly over," the court said in its ruling. "Sept. 11, 2001, already a day of immeasurable tragedy, cannot be the day liberty perished in this country."

Although I didn't read the article myself, a post at the Yahoo Finance page on Sinclair quotes from an article in the Oregonian, saying that:
two women who were wearing shirts with the slogan "Protect Our Civil Liberties" (with no reference to any candidate) were thrown out of a Bush campaign rally. They were not being disruptive.
Tells you absolutely everything you need to know, right?

But what is an amendment that, rather than gaurantying a right to all (and most significantly, to the minority), enisles a minority and refuses it a right granted to all others? Man, that's as profound a stigma as the polity can attach to a minority. The proposal to amend the constitution to ban gay marriage said, in effect, "the union of two of the same gender is such an affront to decency that it is forbade, even if every living soul in a state desires passionately to grant such union the imprimatur of that state." This is no mere pruning of the "full faith and credit" clause, such as that effected by the lamentable Defense of Marriage Act. This pernicious amendment proposed by our President and his party would accord the stigmatization of homosexuals the same dignity as the abolition of slavery and women's suffrage. This amendment would smuggle into the noblest document yet conceived by man a low and invidious "right" that cheapens the constitutional rights consecrated by blood at Gettysburg, Normandy, Khe Sanh and Baghdad. I would sooner put Saddam's lapidary likeness on Mount Rushmore than so defile the Constitution.
Lynne found John Kerry's remarks about her daughter, in which Kerry counted lesbians among "all god's children", to be "cheap and tawdry." You want cheap and tawdry? Cheap and tawdry is our President treating the Constitution of the United States as toilet paper, a cheap prop in his farcical campaign, and wiping his Texan ass with the sanctified parchment - our Constitution - just so he can scare up a few more votes from the haters.

Howza 'bout a big "L" tattooed on their forehead?
And of course, an "S" for straight, a "G" for gay men, and a big 'ol "B" for those who swing both ways?
It sure would eliminate those awkward times when folks go barkin' up the wrong tree...

two women who were wearing shirts with the slogan "Protect Our Civil Liberties"
Kate
If I remember it correctly the three (not two) women were teachers who had tickets to the event. They were allowed in, then later approached by a campaign person and asked to leave. They were also told to give their tickets back, but one hid hers in her clothing, presumably to save as proof that they were invited.
Also in Oregon at another (mebbe same?) B/C event, police fired pepperballs (paintballs filled with cayenne pepper) at protestors.

why didn't dick and lynne make a private call to kerry telling him they were angry and to please cease and desist and leave it at that. why go public with their anger ?

If you want to influence undecideds and swing Republicans give them "STRAIGHT TALK" about the weakening of Civil Liberties under the Bush admininstration.
THE NET NET:
1. PRESIDENT BUSH HAS NOT DEFINED A CLEAR AGENDA NOR MADE CIVIL RIGHTS A PRIORITY EXCEPT FOR FUNDING OF RELIGIOUS GROUPS.
2. FOUR MORE YEARS OF BUSH WILL LIKELY RESULT IS CONTINUED WEAKENING OF CIVIL RIGHTS LAWS ESPECIALLY WITH "APPOINTEES TO THE SUPREME COURT" AT STAKE.
KEY BLURB on page 8 of Executive Summary... "This report finds that President Bush has neither exhibited leadership on pressing civil rights issues, nor taken actions that matched his words....
Redefining Rights in America
The Civil Rights Record of the George W. Bush Administration, 2001–2004
http//www.usccr.gov/pubs/bush/bush04.pdf
Some other tidbits from Executive Summary ( pg 8-15)
* President Bush seldom speaks about civil rights and when he does the administration’s words and deeds often conflict. For example, Bush promised to end racial profiling and improve our election system but has not fulfilled these promises.
* President Bush has UNDERFUNDED the six major civil rights programs (Departments of Education esp. No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) program, Labor, Justice, Health and Human Services, and Housing and Urban Development, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission).
* President Bush’s record on women’s issues is mixed with many more negatives like President Bush attempted to redirect Title IX enforcement, but ceased his effort after overwhelming public expressions of support for the law.
* President Bush and gay rights ( yeah right ! )
* Funding for Religious Groups: ( DING DING DING - WE HAVE THE ONLY WINNER ) Bush has expanded the ability of religious groups to receive federal funds through the Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. BTW, it allows religious organizations that receive public funds to discriminate against individuals based on religion in employment.

in my wildest dreams i would be that optimistic. if we're gonna deal with the republican spin machine, it might as well be this stupid of a story. makes them look like jackasses. and they actually think it's working, too, which makes their delusion last longer.

The new nudge-nudge-wink-wink code would then be "Women in sensible cloaks".
But it does pose a problem; what about the hankies? And how will they see your plaid shirt?

Teachers' in Oregon threatened with arrest for t-shirts. Well, at least they are being honest - "Protect Our Civil Liberties" is a statement that is forbidden from a Bush event. That says all you need to know about this administration.
I love this from the link-a Democratic press release said: The U.S. Constitution was not available on site for comment, but expressed in a written statement support for “the freedom of speech” and “of the press” among other civil liberties.

Mmm... lesburkas and fantastic four uniforms - might add an interesting dimension to all those adult videos, photo shoots, and web broadcasts that folks seem so fond of viewing.
Bill: Boy, it sure was fun protesting that gay rights parade, eh Ted?
Ted: You bet, Bill! Let's go back to my place and have some brews. I just rented a video that has Jenna Jamison gettin down with Nina Hartley!
Bill: I just gotta swing by the corner of 7th and Main and steal all the Kerry signs first. Smell ya later!

Outrage That Rings False
By Hilary Rosen
Saturday, October 16, 2004; Page A23
"John Kerry in the final presidential debate suggested that we are all God's children and used Mary Cheney as an example of a healthy gay person loved by her family.
The response from the Cheneys and the Bush campaign has been blatantly political. In fact, it is they who are using Mary Cheney -- using her now to score points against Kerry and John Edwards over an issue on which they themselves are guilty of the wrongs that Kerry and Edwards are fighting against. Even after almost 30 years in Washington, I am surprised by the overwhelming hypocrisy and meanness of the Bush reelection campaign."
"The Republican leaderships in both houses of Congress brought this amendment to the floor. Anyone watching the debate would cringe at the dehumanizing and painful things said by Republican sponsors of the proposal about gay people.
All of the Cheneys have sat back as senators and members of Congress who stood up for their position against the constitutional amendment were attacked in campaigns across the country. In Texas, North Dakota, South Carolina, Oklahoma, North Carolina and elsewhere, Republican candidates are using the gay issue against Democrats who have done nothing more than vote to protect the notion of fairness and equality in our Constitution.
Where is the outrage of Dick and Lynne Cheney over this?"

OT -- terribly sad, and more ammunition to use against our useless, pathetic, miserable failure of a "leader":
A 79-year-old woman who stood in line outside a supermarket for more than five hours waiting for a flu shot collapsed and later died, the woman's daughter said.
Marie Franklin stood with her husband and hundreds of other seniors outside a Safeway supermarket Wednesday but collapsed when she left the line to seek shade, striking her head, said Ginni Poulos, Franklin's daughter.
Franklin died from her injuries on Thursday, according to the country coroner's office.
"She was standing the entire time, with nowhere to sit and no shade," Poulos said.

Let me put this out there. The election is already decided,no matter what either candidate does or says.Minds have been made, and they are solid in their support one way or another.
Even the undecideds have they're minds made up.THey are just going about their days not being sure, come the day they will pull the lever for the person they have been pulling for all along.
The election is over, its now a matter of counting up the votes.
Too bad we have to wait another 17 days.

My bigger problem with our side is the pathetic reaction to the controversy by the campaign (which stopped our momentum in its tracks) and many posters (who have buried their heads in the sand about this).
Yes, their is mass hypocricy on the Bush/Cheney side, and yes, they are brilliantly using this to get Kerry on the defensive.
But personal note here - please don't hate me, but it needs to be said.
I am gay. Like most gays, I have examined my life and family history. In my case, my gayness is likely a combination of nature and nurture. In no event did I choose to be gay in terms of my preference, but I did choose to be active (which was absolutely the only sane thing to do).
Having said that, I wouldn't want someone who does not know me and hasn't talked to me about "my choice" which broadly means the circumstances in my life to use me as an example of someone, let alone in a national debate.
I desperately want John Kerry to be president, not the least of course because of the threats to me as a gay man if Bush is re-elected. Nonetheless, his reference to Mary Cheney was gratuitous to the question on the table (is gayness a choice?) at the debate. It seemed like a cheap shot at the time, and the refusal to apologize right away and get the subject changed was a gaffe. Look back at the transcript and see the context in which Kerry mentioned this, and it proves my point.

Classic opening paragraph!
"The Medium Lobster was apalled, just like the rest of perpetually-outraged America, to see John Kerry mention that Dick Cheney has a gay daughter Wednesday night. For there is no greater offense one can make to an openly gay person than to make note of their gayness."
My husband and I can't stop laughing.

You are a private citizen. Mary Cheney is a public figure, who works on her father's campaign and has been a public advocate for gay rights. So there's a bit of a difference there.
And the comments (from republicans) that "you don't bring someone's kid into it" are ridiculous. She's 35 years old- hardly a kid. This is all about shoring up the anti-gay christian base.

You are a private citizen -- in the specific circumstance of the debate, anyway -- and Mary Cheney is not. For Kerry to mention his belief about sexuality and to cite Mary Cheney as an example is completely understandable and appropriate. Mary Cheney is an out public lesbian who holds an important political position and whose professional life has been to serve as a lesbian liaison to various communities.
To ignore her existence in the context of the debate question is to erase her visibility and to attempt to force her back into the closet.

This Mary Cheney "controversy" is an absurd distraction from the real issue of this election: how hot Jenna is.
how dare you mention jenna bush in what could be perceived as a vaguely sexual context.
what a cheap and tawdry political trick.

"I'm going to be real positive, while I keep my foot on John Kerry's throat,'' George W. Bush said last month at a confidential luncheon a block away from the White House with a hundred or so of his most ardent, longtime supporters, the so-called R.N.C. Regents. This was a high-rolling crowd -- at one time or another, they had all given large contributions to Bush or the Republican National Committee. Bush had known many of them for years, and a number of them had visited him at the ranch. It was a long way from Poplar Bluff."

one question, one comment:
can lesbians be called "gay"? or is that only reserved for the guys?
I guess that's 2 questions.
comment: Someone should really ask Mrs. Cheney *why* she's so upset that John Kerry praised her daughter.
If she were honest, she'd say "Because we rely on religious bigots to vote for us Repugs, and John Kerry just scared a few of them away--that BASTARD!"

The ugliness of the GOP does not mean that John Kerry can assume he knows about the details of Mary Cheney's life. That is how he used her name.
It was inappropriate, gratuitous and politically stupid. What John Edwards did the week before was fine.
The proof that it was stupid is in how it has stopped Kerry's momentum. I still think there is a good chance he will win. I just think that without the stupid comment and the worse lack of response the next couple days, he would be a shoo-in at this point.
The inability of many supporters to understand that it was the CONTEXT of how he used her name, not that he mentioned something widely known, is really frustrating to me and a lot of my friends, both gay and straight.

You have slandered my very existence. How dare you say I don't exist. There's plenty of room for all that petrified spunk in here. Just a minute, I'll get the chunk of spunk to email you, when I'm done with the keyboard.

It seemed like a cheap shot at the time, and the refusal to apologize right away and get the subject changed was a gaffe. Look back at the transcript and see the context in which Kerry mentioned this, and it proves my point.
I heartily disagree. I think Kerry made a deliberate decision to say MC is gay, but it seemed to be more a slap at the duplicity of B/C for reving up the fundies and their phoney *religious* hostility to "The Homo Agenda".
Kerry has NOTHING to apoligize for.

Oh fuck everyone who thinks that Kerry has made a mistake in talking about Mary Cheney. It was not a mistake - if it was, the Cheney's wouldn't desperately be trying to spin the whole thing so furiously.
Calm down.
How is it not "presidential" to say that Mary Cheney is a child of God? There's nothing wrong with it and the only reason the Cheneys are acting like this is because Kerry made it clear that he believes sexuality is innate and not a choice. Makes it very awkward for the preznit and the vice-undead.
Now shut up already.

It looks like the Mary Cheney non-story is finally cycling out. I watched a few minutes of the cable networks after lunch, and they've all switched focus to the draft, the 'mutiny'in Iraq, and flu shots. Except for Chris Matthews, who was replaying his 'exclusive' interview with John Edwards on it, but I suspect that's mainly to tout the interview itself. I'm sure it will get another round of discussion on the Sunday talkfests, particularly on Fox, but I think events plus the Kerry camp's newfound discipline at staying on-message have killed it.
The fact that Mary Cheney herself has declined to comment also had to have an effect -- eventually, even the pundits have to ask why they are reporting on the outrage of everyone from Dick Cheney to Pat Buchanan when the one person supposedly most 'injured' seems to have no problem with Kerry's comments.

Hopelesspedant...
'Scuse me...are you saying being gay is NOT a matter of birth?
If so, and you're gay, that's the very first time I have ever heard someone of that orientation make that claim, and I have known a fair number of glbt folks ocross the decades...
Mary C's been out and proud for a number of years, and even made money on it, shilling for COORS LIGHT, especially to sponsor the Leather Ball during Montreal's famed yearly gay festival--name eludes me at tne moment...
Is this a matter of silk purses and sows' ears, making lemonade, surrenduring to her 'self', or some other metaphor...
I'd really like to know. I'd really like to know what you're suggesting.
I know the matter is of consequence to glbt folks, because if their sexual orientation (not 'preference', since that already implies a choice)deemed not to be a 'choice', but a biological or genetic predisposition or quirk, then their sexuality is prey to 'normalization' by genetic or chemical or some other means.
Mommas dont let your babies get born to be gay folks...and here's the cure...Dr. Hatch's Miracle Genetic Cure...(there's an interesting interssection here with stem cell research, doncha think)
But if it is a choice, they are open to charges that they bring their fates upon themselves...an equally insidious, typical hegemonic ploy to blame the victim for their own inadequacies or choices...
The primary problem is that they are marginalized in the first place. Let's end that abominable interference, and maybe the rest will take care of itself...
But kerry was not, in my estimation, over the line to remind the pResident as well as the nation of the hypocrisy of espousing the Constitutional marginalizatin of one of their own flesh and blood....

Gratifying to find that I'm not the only one who didn't find "Forrest Gump" charming and magical and somehow insightful. It was certainly technically impressive, and moved along pretty well. But, unlike my sister and her (then) early-teen kids, I didn't find it heartwarming or somehow fulfulling. I "got" the theme of a good heart redeeming a weak mind, but the implications bothered me exactly as they bothered nur, Bruce, and Tena.
(I wasn't crazy about "Rain Man," either.)

Forrest Gump was a kind of smoothly disguised rightist revisionist history. It wasn't actually, you understand, but it works that way, it serves that purpose, it just happens to fit perfectly. It definitely says nothing about the fact that the rape of Vietnam itself was an atrocity, even though that would suit the story very well; its niggers--there is no other word for them--are right out of Birth of a Nation, either hilarious buffoons aping poilitical fancy-talk, beating their wimminfolk, honest hard-working imbiciles complacent in their station; its only portrayal of hippies is as stupid drug addicts; the only real criticism of a political leader is an incoherent asshole's excuse for attacking a girl; there is no other activism and no reason to believe activism was ever anything else or accomplished anything; the meaningless resolutions in the end are as pointless and without weight as the stupidly perfect racial and economic harmony of Star Trek; every single right-wing myth from the miraculous spa that is boot camp to the millionaire next door to the relative uselessness and vagueness of "government" is cherished and celebrated. Lt Dan's only problem is he has to pull hisself up by his---er---wheelstraps...

WTF!? I don't get it. Kerry gives a perfectly good answer to a perfectly good question--re Mary Cheney--and the Media immediately suck up to the Republicans, and give their idiotic spin a few more RPMs. Well, that part I can dig; that's our effin' Media. But what's with the bozos around here fucking validating the Media on this? Kerry wasn't Presidential for 1 out of 270 minutes? Gimme a break! And, don't shout, nonnie, it just makes you look stupid. er.
"Hopelesspedant", boy, you sure picked a perfect nick. Your post was, to me, borderline incomprehensible, but a couple things stick up out of the sludge; "The proof that it was stupid is in how it has stopped Kerry's momentum." What, his bus broke down? Or he didn't get that huge bump in those all-important fucking useless Goddamned POLLS 5 minutes after the debate was over, that you were really really counting on? Sheesh.
And;"The inability of many supporters to understand..." Ummm, like 97% of those you are currently talking to? And that includes me. I just googled the quote again, to be sure, and I'm fucked if I can see what you're talking about. The "outrage" of the Cheneys and other Repubs is pure Cubic Zirconium. It's as faux as it can get. Loud, flashy, and fake.

Has Mary Cheney herself yet bothered to personally say anything about Kerry's remark?
Mary Cheney's sister was asked, point-blank, if Mary had said she was offended; the sister just repeated her talking point that Kerry's comment was very offensive.
So far, we have no reason to believe that Mary Cheney herself was actually offended by being mentioned. I do wonder, though, if she is offended that her father's running mate wants to amend the Constitution to make her and her partner into second-class citizens. Certainly Lynne and Dick haven't expressed any outrage at all about that, so I have to wonder what matters more to them: their political influence, or their family?

Has Mary Cheney herself yet bothered to personally say anything about Kerry's remark?
Mary Cheney's sister was asked, point-blank, if Mary had said she was offended; the sister just repeated her talking point that Kerry's comment was very offensive.

to Moeman,
I thought lesbians liked tongue between the cheeks humor?
to tena,
I wonder if Coulter was sexually indeterminate, and raised as a girl?
